May is Asian & Pacific Islander American Heritage Month! May was chosen bc it was the month the 1st Japanese immigrants arrived in the US & the month the transcontinental railroad was completed by its majority Chinese workers - both in the 1800s. On the flip side, May of 1882 was also when the Chinese Exclusion Act was signed into law, & that wasn’t repealed until the early 1940s. 🙃 ✨🌸✨ A big struggle of being Asian American is the invisibility - you’re not Asian enough for Asians, but to white America, you’re always the perpetual foreigner. This is why discourse of popular media involving Asians can be frustrating AF bc the diaspora POV is often not considered. (And I’m only speaking from my personal AsianAm perspective since we’re not a monolith & PI Americans have their distinct experiences) 🌸🌸🌸 All of which to say, it’s important to recognize the history, culture, & contributions of all our ethnic communities so we can work together towards a better & more compassionate society. But in terms of #aapiheritagemonth specifically, it feels important this year to really make a point about celebrating #AAPI considering the rise of anti-Asian sentiments everywhere & to speak up against it where/whenever you see it. ✨🌸✨ Anyway I took this #selfie last summer when I couldn’t wait to show off my @asianamericangirlclub crop. #tbt Just me #unfiltered in the golden hour light on Lunar New Year. ☀️🧧 The Oscars are this weekend & after talking about the nominees w/friends, I’m upset again that a movie as wonderfully scripted & poignantly acted as @thefarewell was shut out of the Oscars race, not to mention treated as a foreign film often this awards season when it is American. The story is an Asian-American diaspora experience & the beauty of it is its cultural specificity yet universal themes (familial love, grief, celebration, regret, etc). It just drives home to me 2 things: 1) the continued need for Immigrant/The Struggle stories (bc somehow people still don’t get that immigrant diaspora stories are American(new homeland) stories) AND fresh & contemporary AsianAm stories. ☀️🌿☀️ 2) the importance of telling our own stories & raising them up. Allies are great & necessary, but the fact is we need to champion our causes, our stories, our art. No one is going to make space for us if we don’t make space ourselves. So thank you @thumbelulu for taking up space with this moving & personal movie. I laughed, I cried, I hugged my Nai Nai. 💗💗💗 For anyone who hasn’t seen The Farewell or was hesitant, don’t be. it’s so nice to finally see a brand that is representing me and the many asian american girls in this country. growing up was always so difficult because i never felt like i belonged, whether it be here in the states or anytime i’ve gone overseas. growing up, i’ve always been singled out as “that one asian girl” in the group. growing up, i’ve been made fun of because people didn’t understand that asia has more countries than just china or japan. growing up, my dad has always instilled in me that no matter what anyone says, never forget your culture and where you came from because no one can ever take that away from you. i’m so proud of my culture and proud to say that i am unique and different. i may not look like the stereotypical cookie cutter american woman, but i’m proud to be a first generation lao american woman. #teamaagc #beundefinable #moniwore (at Skully's Music-Diner) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvmdQ0Zh1xR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6ufbx0wkhaff
