can we talk about just how effective jock would’ve been in pushing a jo character arc. It’s not just the fact that Brick acts as a good moral compass, but it’s also how he encompasses EVERYTHING jo tries to avoid (he’s open with his femininity, emotional, sensitive, clumsy etc) and jo…still likes and respects him??

Like, she views him as an equal to the point of overestimating him (you and I both know that mf was trying his hardest in the thumb wrestling scene and jo was all “oh he hardly tried!! what a gentleman!!☺️” GIRL YOU NEARLY BROKE HIS THUMB). You can tell she genuinely enjoys competing with Brick, and she’s never bored whenever they interact. She’s often the one to go up and talk to him, despite beating him time and time again. Jo views him as a worthy competitor even after witnessing him being the most embarrassing man alive (who the fuck tries to dislocate their hip to impress a girl) and pissing himself.

The point is, Jo clearly holds Brick in somewhat of a higher regard despite him showing weakness so often. And that’s important because Jo’s main driving force is not wanting to appear weak.

You can see little moments of her showing care or concern before immediately switching back to her cutthroat attitude. Caring is a “”weakness”” that prevents you from winning (demonstrated by Brick in episode 7). When Jo volunteers to have makeup put on her, she immediately covers it up with a facade of toughness and says she’s “only [doing it] for the good of the team” (Compare this to Brick’s “Yeah, you heard me.” after announcing his dream of going to fashion school). She’s definitely struggling with internalised misogyny and associating femininity with weakness, but that’s an essay for another day.

Brick shows so much “weakness” and yet she still somewhat respects and even cares for him more than the other contestants. And I find that SO interesting.

Especially because he's her rival??? Their relationship is the embodiment of competition. Overcompetitiveness (or toxic competitiveness) is one of Jo's most glaring flaws, so to have her actually care about the one she should be against the MOST? It's a really good way of showing her overcoming her own toxic competitiveness.

Also, the parallels between Jo basically kick-starting Brick's character arc about prioritising the wellbeing of others...and then having Brick be a focal point in a Jo arc about prioritising the wellbeing of others...chef's kiss

I'd also like to add a little detail in relation to Jo's contestant biography. Specifically on her weird dream about letting a guy win because she thought he was "attractive." Yes this was hinting at Brick idc it was way too specific and odd compared to the other dreams, and Brick is the only guy we know who constantly competed against her (and lost). And I'm definitely reading into this too much, but it's actually quite interesting how her subconscious attraction to the guy overpowered her very, VERY intense need to win. Guess that's why it was a weird dream, but it still makes me think about the potential of Jo sacrificing her win for someone she grew to care for. Also I want representation of masc women in relationships that aren’t just played off as a joke

I can go on about this all night (I wish I could) but yeah. I really wish they'd give Jo a proper character arc because she really deserved one. She deserves to be able to grow and develop because she's a great fucking character, and Brick was literally the key to all of that. Peace out

- Duncney: 5/10. Duncan doesn't like Taylor and is a major Kanye West fan, while Courtney is a huge swiftie, so naturally they're in the middle. If I liked Duncan, I may say he got character development and became a swiftie, but would rather die than admit it. But since I don't like him that is out of the question.

- Nemma: 10/10. They both love folklore, and just do their own thing separately in the same room while the album plays on shuffle in the background. Very therapeutic <3 Emma may occasionally rant about folklore and deeply analyse it occasionally and Noah will listen.

- Nowen: 5/10. I think Owen would vibe with some of Taylor's more well-known songs, and obviously Noah is secretly a swiftie because yes. But..... I don't see them going to concerts, playing her songs often, fangirling about Taylor in general, so, sorry Mia, it has to be a 5 </3

- Scottney: 100/10. Scott 1000% loves Debut (Taylor Swift's debut album, which also happens to be named Taylor Swift but is usually just called 'Debut' by fans) especially her slightly more unhinged songs because he's a bit of an unhinged farm boy and would like country music. Courtney loves most of her albums but has a general bias towards Speak Now. Match made in heaven. The two can be found commonly blasting Taylor's country songs (*cough cough* definitely not talking about Picture To Burn, Sparks Fly, nope *cough cough*)

- Jock: 7/10. Both are swifties, yes, but..... Jo would be super, SUPER unlikely to admit she's a swiftie, so the ranking had to bumped down a bit. </3

- Jomaria: 5/10. Don't really see Anne Maria being a swiftie, but she has no opinion on Taylor, and it's mainly Jo that bumps the ranking up to 5.

- Nichulia: 10/10. Nichelle and Julia went to the Eras Tour as Lover and reputation respectively. (Nichelle insisted. She originally wanted to go as 1989 since it's her favourite album, but since Julia's favourite album is reputation and Lover complements reputation the most, she went as Lover instead)

- Axelle: 5/10. Not much to say, really. Axel isn't a swiftie and has no opinion on Taylor, while Nichelle is a swiftie.

- Gweoff: 8/10. Gwen (if she looked past the pastel, lovey-dovey aesthetic of Lover, would be a Lover fan) is a swiftie, while Geoff can vibe with Taylor's music and probably listens to some of the songs off of 1989.

- Bridgney: 9.5/10. I've changed my mind. I will be a swiftie!Bridgette truther from now on. But I don't think of Bridgette as a REALLY BIG fan, I just see her as vibing with most of Taylor's discography. And ofc, Courtney is a massive swiftie. They love blasting the wholesome Speak Now songs <3

- Gwourtney: 10/10. I've already explained for both, but yeah- idek why I think this, but I like to think they blast Midnights together

- Lindsbeth: 10000/10. Both are massive swifties and scream to her songs together (mostly Fearless, Lover and 1989) and went to the Eras Tour as..... I'm not sure, but it was cheesy but also adorable and obviously matching. They definitely made TONS of friendship bracelets for the occasion and traded with a fuck ton of people.

- Lyler: 5/10. Don't really see Tyler as a swiftie, but he has nothing against Taylor. Again, Lindsay is a massive swiftie.

- Gwent: 10/10. Could definitely see Trent covering some of the songs from Red and Gwen listening <3

- Trentney: 10000/10. I SEE THE VISION OF TRENT AND COURTNEY ABSOLUTELY NAILING DUETTED COVERS OF HER SONGS. LIKE, THE LAST TIME AND EXILE WOULD SOUND SO AMAZING WITH THEIR VOICES.

- Trody: 10/10. Could see the two going to the Eras Tour as an obscure, hilarious matching concept.

- Harody: 10/10. Harold would probably share random facts about Taylor's lyricism or production and how it was really clever of her, and Cody would be fine with it.

- Lesharold: 10/10. Also probably went to the Eras Tour as some kind of matching thing. Idk what but yeah.

- Rajbow: 5/10. Like you said, Bowie is likely to be a swiftie, while Raj is confused but it alright with her music.

- Geoff/Brody: 6/10. Both like some of her songs, but aren't actually swifties.

- Izva: 0.7/10. The 0.7 is for how Izzy only likes one or two songs by Taylor. And Eva definitely hates pop and country, so-

- Gidgette: 7/10. I've already explained for both.

- Chase/Emma (Reboot): 5/10. Emma would be a swiftie, but Chase has no opinion on Taylor. Also Emma would definitely love Olivia Rodrigo. get him back! from Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS is so them coded. Actually, I could also say get him back! is very Duncney coded, too-

- Prillie: 5.5/10. Millie only likes It's Nice To Have a Friend, but Priya is a swiftie.

- Scarmien: 1/10. Scary Girl doesn't listen to a lot of music, and if she does it's creepy, old music. However, Damien may listen to a couple of her songs, so that is why the ranking was 1/10 rather than 0/10.

- Damien/Priya: 6/10. Already explained for both.

- Chipper: 0/10. Do I even need to elaborate on Ripper?

- Leshindsay: 100/10. Also went to the Eras Tour in matching outfits.

- Courtney/Emma (RR) (because I think that's a thing now): 100/10. Amazing match. They rant about her songs and over-analyse them together lmao <3
