Things that are elective: Babies.

In light of the recently commuted sentence of Chelsea Manning by President Barrack Obama there has been a surge of posts on my news feeds (Facebook in particular). Some are supportive, some don’t care, some are happy to see that taxpayers won’t be paying for further medical care for a soldier who served so dishonorably. Blah, Blah, Blah. so over this story.

Often the argument of Chelsea Manning is set aside and it becomes a more general opposition of government healthcare (what people prefer to refer to as their taxpayer dollars) paying for an elective surgery and elective medical procedures, medications, and so forth for transgender people in the military.

As a veteran I have to set aside my feelings for a moment on human rights. The military is called the service because you are called to SERVE. Although we may have joined with the knowledge of a promised education or a way to provide for our families - that likely was not the greatest underlying motivation for taking the oath. The military has however, provided me with a means to better my life, and I intend to share that blessing with my fellow Americans. Most of my brother and sister veterans also give back to society after their service ends through taking civilian civil service jobs, by volunteering, and by contributing to their communities. In other words, we make your tax dollars worth while long after we leave.

“Sex reassignment surgery is an elective surgery and shouldn’t be covered by government insurance.”

That is the common song of many. From a strictly military and practical view, it is elective. However, there’s another healthcare issue that is facing our military and causes far greater expense each year than sex reassignment surgeries ever could (Perform a quick google search of numbers of transgender people within the military or even the country).

Child birth.

Childbirth is elective. Even for a woman who does not support abortion, avoiding pregnancy is possibly by many routes. (Another quick search will show that unplanned pregnancy among female soldiers is higher than the general population). Regardless of planned or unplanned - there is no need for a female soldier to have a child.

Having a child is an unnecessary expense charged to government healthcare. Add that the woman is unable to perform combat duties and even many routine duties during the time of pregnancy, during the 6 weeks of paid leave following the birth, and then in the months following as her body heels and she recovers to her pre-pregnancy fitness state. This is a process that can be freely repeated until the desired number of children is reached.

Sex reassignment is a choice - we shouldn’t pay for it. Children are a choice, we shouldn't pay for them.

Transgender soldiers should wait until they exit the service so that they do not take away time from duty for these surgeries. Women should wait until they leave the service to have children so that they do not take away from their duties.

Transgender soldiers will require separate facilities and special treatment. Pregnant female soldiers follow a special set of guidelines outlining duties they may perform, have specially designed fitness plans and instructors, shorter work days, an accommodating uniform, and classes that take them away from work at least once a week.

Please find a new argument. Say what you mean. Say that you don’t accept medical evidence that being Transgender is no longer considered a mental illness by any respected person in medicine and that your god doesn’t allow you to support, with your tax dollars, the transitioning of ones body to another sex. Say you’re an ignorant fuck who hates people who aren’t like you. But for the love of coffee, let’s not say it isn’t the job of the government to pay for elective medical expenses.
