My Hero Academia Season 6
Fans of the popular superhero anime will be thrilled to see the return of My Hero Academia. Season 6 promises to be just as action-packed as its predecessors, as Deku and his classmates face off against new villains and hone their powers.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie
While Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 won't be airing until later this year, fans can still get their fix with the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie. This prequel delves into the backstory of fan-favorite character Gojo Satoru, and is sure to be a hit with both longtime fans and newcomers to the series.
Fruits Basket: The Final Season
Fruits Basket has been a beloved anime since its first season aired in 2019, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the final season. The emotional story of Tohru and the Sohma family will come to a conclusion in this season, and it's sure to be a tearjerker.
Shadows House

Tatsu’s Choices: 2019 Awards
Ficswithluv launched in September of 2019, and we could not have possibly imagined that we would grow as quickly and wonderfully as we have!! Dolly rambles Feb 2020
...why yes, the resident babysitter is still in hanfu. XD I've been reluctant to change him out after all the effort of getting him into it. Regardless, he's been tending to baby Soo with aplomb. *approves*
(Side note, the round-collared robe he's wearing stays in place and stands up to being moved around much better than the cross-collared robes Tatsue is in, which tend to slip off the shoulders at the slightest nudge.)
Some BJD stuff I've been looking forward to recently - the release of Guardlove's much-hyped Yo-SD-like 4th-gen body; kindergarten's in-stock release of her 醒醒Xingxing head; receiving the 2D Doll and Akagidoll bodies I have on order; making some cute ribbon-tie sandals; getting a better wig and eyes for Soo, and coming up with a name for him.
I'm also thinking of (finally) learning to knit! I really like knitwear on my dolls but have always been a little afraid of picking it up myself - it’s a different skill set from what I’m used to. I'm hoping one can jump straight into knitting at doll scale, as I did with dressmaking. If anyone has any good links or tutorials to recommend for an absolute beginner, feel free to throw them out there~

Hello, everyone!
I’d like to introduce my new project: Mythos!
Mythos is going to be a series where I explore monsters, gods, and other magical creatures from mythologies around the world, beginning with the mythos of Japan.
Since Japanese mythology has more inspiration to draw from than I could reasonably fit in one artbook, I’m going to split it across two volumes. One volume will be focused on the holy beings known as Kami, and the other (this volume) will focus on the more common magical creatures known as yokai.
To help fund the project and to give you all a chance to take part in this series, I’m going to be opening up a number of slots for each of the yokai. For those who are interested, you can submit your OC and I’ll turn them into the yokai of your choice. If you don’t have an OC, you can still participate by submitting a design idea for one of the yokai.

I’ll be doing the yokaifications using my standard commission prices, but, as additional thanks for participation, you’ll receive a discount on the final product. Prices for each commission level can be found here: https://sta.sh/01iyfxjw2nnx
The final project will be sold as a hi-res digital art bundle for $80, with a 5% cumulative discount for each level of commission (ie, uncolored sketches will give a 5% discount, colored sketches give a 10% discount, and so on.) Patreon supporters will get an extra 5% discount, even if they don’t participate.
There will be two slots for each Yokai, since I don’t really want to draw fifty different kitsune. If you end up taking a slot but the design of the Yokai isn’t to your liking, I’ll offer a full refund (though, I won’t be able to give you a discount on the art bundle at the end if that happens.)
Here’s the list of the Yokai I'll be working on. During my research, I noticed that many of the yokai can be characterized as good, evil, or as a neutral (but annoying) trickster. Since I thought it would be fun to draw each version, you can pick which of the versions you’d like of that happens to be the Yokai of your choice.

Talent Show (Leuda) || August 10th, 2019
Near Leuda Island’s own City Hall, a small stage has been set up to prepare for a special Talent Show! Residents all across the island are encouraged to sign up to showcase their talent to the rest of the island, whether it be singing, dancing, or even showing one little quirky thing you can do. Nearby, one single judge will be stationed to judge every talent and eventually grant his chosen victor based on his own...very flawed efforts.
In order to participate in the Leuda Island Talent Show, you must first create a post of what your muse will be doing on stage. It can be literally anything that you can think of, from performance to sleeping on command to drawing a pretty picture of someone in the audience! Whatever you can do on stage, you are free to do.
Along with your post describing the talent, there will be one roll that you must do and put at the end of your post.
This roll is to decide the judge’s award! The judge, the illustrious Announcer-Chan, is very fickle with his tastes and seems to almost pick his selections at random. In the drafts of the main, there is a number picked out of 100 (and no, it wasn’t rolled in the OOC server). For this roll, you will need to get as close to this number as you possibly can.
To receive your number, input the following into Tatsu:

You only roll this once and attach it to your post. On August 10th at 10pm EST, the number in the drafts - as well as the winner who got the closest to that number - will be announced!

A Completely Normal Wake-up Call
More of the anime stuff. I’m gonna stop the tagging cause it just gets posted in the relevant discord anyway. Had to rewrite the whole damn thing because my hard drive died when it was 80% done.
Most recent story regarding Shouko Kogawa and the Completely Normal Study Group, taking place in...March...2019? . . . maybe?

The first few moments after their arrival were pure hell.
It was so dark that one couldn't see a hand in front of one's face, genuine pitch-blackness. Shouko instinctively closed her hands around thin air and her daggers ignited with a snap-hiss of flame, throwing everything into view in a flickering red-orange light that, while it made things visible, did nothing to help with the mood of fear and panic. Fortunately, Reika was quick to pick up on the idea, and the softer, steadier glow of her spear helped to further illuminate things, as did Shizuka's katana when she drew it and brought forth the blade's simmering eldritch shimmer.
Then there was no time to think for awhile. Erika was crumpling to the ground, unable to stand on her remaining leg, and Miyumi was clutching her shoulder and Kanako struggled to help Erika with her good arm. Saika rushed to Erika first, trying to help Kanako staunch the bleeding and try to get her healing to patch her back up. Shouko stood by to support...and occasionally to give quiet thanks that her daggers emitted flame.
A couple of phones came out, but there seemed to be no reception wherever they were, and so they got pressed into service as extra lights until the group could move somewhere they could call for help. As things began to settle, Shouko forced herself to turn away from her injured friends, trying totake a look around. They were in a cave, as far as she could tell - bare, craggy stone curving up into a wall high above them, while a yawning blackness reached off into a pair of directions. A few stalactites hung from the ceiling like giant teeth, a handful of stalagmites reaching up likewise from the cave floor, but whatever dripping water had created the stone formation had long ago dried up - everything was gritty and dry.
A set of snapping fingers pulled Shouko's attention back towards the group to where Reika was kneeling with her younger sister's head cradled in her lap. As she caught Shouko's gaze she stopped snapping her fingers and waggled them in her direction. "You, knife girl. You're the least beat-up, take the swordswoman here and find out where the hell we are."
Shouko's temper briefly flared, but she brought it under control quickly. Reika wasn't going to leave Miyumi lying there, and her spear was needed for Saika to see what she was doing. And she was right - they really did need to find out where Count McFuckface had thrown them off to. So she nodded and briefly stepped close to whisper a few words into Saika's ear, prompting her to look up and smile weakly, mouthing a few words back. Then she turned to Shizuka, who as per usual refused to meet her gaze head-on and instead had already taken a few steps towards one of the openings.
The pair walked for a few seconds down the tunnel, but found their efforts soon stymied as the cave narrowed further and further, until it was little more than a crevice that even Miyumi at her best would have struggled to squirm through. It did serve one purpose, though, as Shizuka quietly noted feeling a breeze, and when Shouko held up one dagger she could see the flames drifting slightly towards the crack, meaning the wind was coming from the other way. So the other way they went, passing by the others and warning them of the dead end.
Shizuka's shoes and Shouko's boots crunched on the scrabbly stone with every step, echoing hollowly back at them, and as the darkness of the cave swallowed the light from Reika's spear and the phones, the oppressive darkness and craggy rock closed in around the pair. Shouko had to swallow a rising fear as images flashed through her head. What if they'd ended up miles below the surface and they never found a way out? What if the cave just branched, and branched, and branched and they never found the right passage back?
"Sh," she hissed at herself.
"Hm?" Shizuka asked, pausing briefly.
"Nothing," she said, and the pair moved on. Shizuka, characteristically, hadn't even turned to look back at her, her face hidden behind her veil of dark hair, inky-black, as black as the cave ahead of them-
Shouko bit her lip.
It probably wasn't more than two or three minutes, really, but buried by stone and with their friends hurting, not knowing where they'd ended up, it felt like forever. But then a breeze strong enough to stir Shouko's hair passed over them, and finally they turned a bend and spied a glimmer of light ahead of them. Shouko could have cried, and immediately broke into a jog that carried her past Shizuka, and she heard the would-be shrine maiden quicken her own step behind her.
They emerged from the cave to see a starlit sky, a glorious full moon hanging over them. The cave, it turned out, was nestled in a series of craggy foothills dotted with scrub brush that sloped gently downwards from a mountain range towards a forest. Nearby was a running river that must have carved out the rent in the stone at some point in the past, but had since been diverted to a new course.
"That isn't Fuji," Shouko pointed out as she dismissed her daggers, knowing she was stating the obvious but feeling compelled to say so anyway. Shizuka likewise sheathed her sword, leaving the pair of them bathed in the moonlight, and Shouko blinked her eyes a few times to get adjusted.
Wherever they were, it wasn't Japan. What could be seen of the forest made that clear. The tall trees didn't look like evergreens, or regular leafy trees, but more like massive palms, the fronds of which formed a solid canopy. Was it a rainforest? Were they even on Earth? No, wait, the moon's markings looked the same, yes, they were still on the same planet. Were they in Hawaii, or California, or Brasil somewhere? Had Count Chucklefuck really thrown them all the way across the Pacific?
As they stood there and pondered, there came a sound from the distance, a loud, gruff snort like a donkey had started to bray and then gave up halfway through, except the donkey in this case sounded like it weighed a couple tons. There was an answering bellow of similar tone, and then some of the trees started to shake as if something massive was shouldering through them. Shizuka's hand went back to her blade, and Shouko's fingers closed, ready to summon her daggers back. Had the damn Tatsu-varag followed them somehow?! No, no, hell no, they'd killed the damn thing, killed it dead, burned it to ashes, there was no damn possibility it had survived again.
There was a crunch of branches and some kind of animal shouldered its way out of the trees. Shouko at first thought it was some kind of rhino, a really big one, grey in the moonlight with a heavy, pebbly hide. But the rhino had a weird crest at the back of its head, a solid one like bone, and it seemed like it had extra horns-
Shouko felt her heart jump into her throat. There was no way that what she was seeing could be real, she was hallucinating, or imagining, or, or something. She tried to speak and couldn't, she had to swallow and try again a couple of times just to manage a tiny, stuttering, "Sh-Shizuka...is...i-is...-is, is that..."
"A triceratops," Shizuka whispered through her lips, sounding likewise all but dumbstruck at the sight. Ignorant of the two girls in the foothills, the creature lumbered towards the river and ducked its head to drink. As it reached the water a rock formation suddenly shifted and edged away with a distant snort of exasperation. It was another dinosaur, one of the ones with an armored back - Shouko's brain was too busy screaming itself hoarse to try remembering the name.
When Count Dickhead had pulled his stunt with the guns and the freaky magic clock out of nowhere, Shouko had expected a couple of things. She'd half-expected they'd show up in the Edo period and get thrown into a battle with Nobunaga, or maybe all the way back to the Kamakura, fighting the Mongols. Or maybe he'd pitched them into the future, somewhere they wouldn't bother him. Then, when they'd emerged in the cave she'd had to shut down thoughts that maybe he hadn't thrown them back in time at all, but maybe imprisoned them in some kind of twilight realm.
Of all the things she'd expected, dinosaurs had not been one of them.
"Holy shit," she breathed, and even as she did so she watched a serpentine creature emerge from the canopy, bending itself about to munch at the leaves, and Shouko realized it had to be one of the long-necked kind.
Beside her, she was dimly aware of Shizuka raising her hands to her mouth. "This," she heard her murmur, "this...this is my..."
Shouko snapped her head around, dinosaurs suddenly forgotten as she got her first good look at Shizuka's face since they'd popped out in the cave. Her red eyes were wide, frightened, her face paler than even usual, and the hands that hovered in front of her mouth with shaking, her lip likewise trembling. Gone was her usual steely calm, her seen-it-all-twice chill, and Shouko was taken completely aback. "What?" she asked.
Shizuka didn't look back at her. "This is my fault," she whispered. "I did this. If I hadn't defied him-"
A sudden explosion seemed to snap Shouko's chest in half and filled her with a giant, raging fire. Without thinking about what she was doing, she put out both hands and grabbed Shizuka's blouse in her fists, turning the other girl towards her. Shizuka didn't even fight - normally Shouko wouldn't have gotten away with so much as a finger laid upon her. "Don't you dare," she snarled. "Don't you dare say such a thing." She had to struggle not to shake Shizuka wholesale. "If you hadn't come along, we wouldn't be patching ourselves up in a cave, we'd be too busy being dead. We scraped by on the skin of our teeth, and that was with all seven of us there! If it had been six, there's no way we would have made it!"
Shizuka seemed not to notice Shouko's deathgrip on her shirt, staring into her eyes like she'd woken from some kind of nightmare. "You could have run away," she pointed out.
Shouko felt the rage ebb, remembering the emergency beacon Kanako had held the whole time. "Yeah, we could have run away," she agreed, before the fire suddenly welled back up inside her, and this time she actually took a step forward to put her face right in Shizuka's own. "We could've run away, and you know what would've happened? A couple nights later some set of parents somewhere would be staying up all night wondering what happened to their child. Then a few years later some little kid would be getting told nobody could find their big sister or brother. We could've run away and that bastard would have gone right on killing kids beneath everyone's notice while the Court and the Vanguard argued about who should do something. But that's not going to happen, because we killed it. We did that. All of us. Together. No more nightmares. No more kids like Kana growing up without a mom and dad. We broke that chain. A bunch of kids. Because you know what we are, Shizuka?"
Those wide red eyes blinked. She'd never seen Shizuka so nonplussed in the whole time she'd known her. "We...are hunters of the dark-"
"No we're not!" Shouko cried out, and this time she did go so far as to give Shizuka a shake, her fists trembling with emotion. "We're highschool seniors! We're a class president, a star athlete, a math whiz, and a...a damn juvenile delinquent! And you. And Saika. And Reika. A bunch of girls who oughta be looking at what university they want to go to had to go out and become dragonslayers. Dragonslayers," she emphasized.
"Dragonslayers...?" Shizuka echoed. She dropped her gaze, the fringe of her bangs obscuring her eyes.
"Yeah. All of us." Shouko breathed in, breathed out, breathed in, short and sharp, as she debated with herself, and decided since she was already in this deep, she might as well. "Shizuka, I never thought I would say a thing like this six months ago, but you're like my best friend, you know?"
Shizuka jerked back slightly, and only the hands still clenched in the material of her blouse stopped her. "I...?" she said, eyes wide as she looked back into Shouko's face.
"Yeah," Shouko said, finally relaxing her grip a little bit. "Saika's my girlfriend and I love the shit out of her, even if I still kind of suck at saying it, and Kanako and Erika and Miyumi are all great, but...it was you and me, all those weekends with the bokken and the wakizashi, and that fight with the onryo when we..." Shouko took in a breath that shook in her lungs. "When you got me to put myself out there like that." She met Shizuka's eyes, though her vision swam as moisture clouded her gaze. "I don't know what's gonna happen, but, I wouldn't give it up for anything. That day back in September, I felt like...I felt like I finally found a piece of myself that had been missing the whole time, that I hadn't really been me until I brought those daggers out. You're such a fucking edgelord, but you gave me that," she blurted, feeling liquid running down her face.
"Shouko," Shizuka said softly.
"So I don't wanna hear it," Shouko went on, her fists clenching once more. "You hear me? I don't wanna hear this noise about how this is your fault. Because it's not. It's not, you hear me? You're not responsible for the shit people pull because they're too busy playing politics to remember what the hell they're supposed to be doing to begin with. It's not your fault for what Co- what he did to punish you for standing up with your fucking friends. It's not your fault when someone decides to spite you instead of standing up for you. It's not your fault when your dad treats you like a fucking scandal and he's too goddamn stupid to stop pulling the same dumb crap over and over no matter how many times it blows up on him."
Shizuka's eyes narrowed, a shadow of her usual mien reasserting itself. "Taliesin is not my father," she said, an edge returning to her voice.
“Huh?” Shouko blinked, stopped cold by the non-sequitur. Why the hell was Shizuka pointing out-
Then she shook her head angrily, heat flooding into her face. "Never mind, you know what I mean." Shizuka started to arch an eyebrow and open her mouth to speak, and Shouko squeezed her eyes shut and ducked her head until her brow thumped into the heels of her hands. "Don't psychoanalyze me, Shizuka, you know what I mean!"
There was a long, breathless moment, until Shouko felt a hand softly pat her hair. "I do know what you mean," Shizuka said softly, and Shouko looked up into her face to see a familiar, barely-there smile on Shizuka's features. "You may let go of me now." Shouko slowly opened her hands - slowly, because her fingers were aching from being clenched for so long. "I will take everything you've said under advisement," she said, as if Shouko had offered her a pointer in the classroom - fat chance! - and laughed softly. "Your passion befits a Dauntless Heart indeed."
Shouko felt the blush that had been fading come rushing back, and she turned away, scratching self-consciously at her hair. "Thanks," she mumbled.
"We should go back and tell the others what we've seen," Shizuka said after another moment. "They will start to worry if we do not return soon. And they deserve to know."
"You start back. I'll join you in a second," Shouko said, wiping at the tracks left on her face.
Shizuka nodded. "I will walk slowly." She paused. "Thank you, Shouko." Then her shoes crunched softly on the rock, receding back into the cave once more.
Left alone under the moonlight, Shouko Kogawa the 'Dauntless Heart' breathed in and out slowly, fighting to contain the tumult of emotion that had all come bursting out. As she did so, she instinctively rifled through her jacket pockets, scowling at the tears and the now-dried saliva left from the thing that had tried to munch her during the battle - this had been her second-favorite biking jacket, dammit.
She found her pack of cigarettes intact and pulled one out, placing the butt between her lips.
Then she plucked it out again and stared at it. Then looked down at the pack and counted, in a rush, twelve more.
She was sixty-five million years or whatever out of her own time and she had barely half a pack of cigarettes.
"Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhit," she hissed, and thrust the one she'd picked back into the pack before she followed Shizuka back into the cave.

Hit List: Shelley's Top 3 Picks in East Austin
Happy New Year to the Trading Places Village!
To start off 2019 with my first post of the year, I thought I would introduce you all to my neighborhood (that is, when I'm not off vagabonding somewhere else in the world!). My hometown is Austin, Texas — and I live in the weird, quirky, artistic neighborhood of East Austin, just east of downtown.
I love my neighborhood, which has really changed and grown a lot in the last 5 years. Sometimes Austin experiences too much and too rapid growth, and it's hard to keep up with it all. It's also sad sometimes seeing the old places close or get forced out. But despite all the changes, there are many places — both long-time, established traditions and exciting new things that have come in — that I love in my neighborhood.
Here, then, I share my "Top 3" picks across various categories of places to eat, drink and be merry in East Austin:
TOP 3 TACOS:
Tamale House East, 1707 E. 6th
One of my all-time faves. I lived down the street from the original location further north; once I moved to the east side, they opened this east side location too, right down the street! Coincidence? I think not! Owned and run by the Valera family since 1958, they make mouth-watering tamales along with a great selection of breakfast and all-day tacos, mole, enchiladas plates and more. A fantastic, fun atmosphere with cool décor inside, and a chill little garden patio as well. They have live salsa from The Brew every weekend and lots of other events, including music and Frida Fridays. Check it out, you can’t go wrong! Full bar, open breakfast through dinner.
Joe’s Bakery, 2305 E. 7th
Great family-owned place that’s been there since 1962. INCREDIBLE tortillas and migas, cool old-school atmosphere, and a great front counter Mexican bakery selection. Their migas are the best in town, according to me and my friends Mando Rayo and Jarod Reese who wrote the book on Tacos of Texas (literally!) Only open for breakfast and lunch.

This vintage Airstream food truck is right across the street from my condo complex. It’s behind La Holly bar (owned by the same folks), which makes for a fun place to combine for drinks with your tacos. They have a pretty interesting menu of unusual and gourmet tacos. Great outdoor space as well.
TOP 3 BREAKFAST SPOTS:
Counter Café, 1914 E. 6th
This place is honestly the BOMB for breakfast. Personally I love their benedicts, but the Steak & Eggs and Quail & Eggs get pretty high reviews from customers. Their biscuits are also pretty damn good and very authentic Southern. You can’t go too wrong with lunch here either. Only open for breakfast and lunch (their burgers are great, and could crossover into that category below).

Launderette, 2115 Holly St.
While Launderette doesn't serve breakfast every day — only weekend brunch — that brunch definitely rates as one of my top picks anywhere in Austin. If I didn’t have Launderette in this section, I would definitely put it in the “upscale restaurant” section below, so consider this a dual entry. Comfort food in a cool setting, to-die-for cocktails, and a pretty good happy hour. Don’t miss it when in Austin.
Juan in a Million, 2300 E. Cesar Chavez
Another long-time, family-owned East side fave. The patriarch of the family, Juan himself, is usually there shaking customers’ hands and asking how things are. This is super hole-in-the-wall, but don’t let that put you off. There are usually lines to get in for weekend breakfast (they also serve lunch every day). Huge plates; in fact, they are well known and were featured on the Travel Channel for their “Don Juan” — if you can eat the whole thing, your picture goes up on the wall. I have a few friends whose mugs grace those walls.
TOP 3 BURGERS:
Hi-Hat Public House, 2121 E. 6th
This is one of my favorite casual, comfortable neighborhood spots. They always remember me there, and have a definite cast of regulars. It’s also one of the best burgers on the east side, and on Thursdays you can get a burger and a pint for $14. If you don’t come for the burger, you can check out Taco Tuesday (two tacos and a pint for $12), Wine Wednesday (half-price bottles), or their weekend brunch with live jazz. They also have live music many other nights of the week.
Justine’s Brasserie, 4710 E. 5th
This is one of my favorite places on the East Side, for way more than the burger. It would definitely go on my list for top upscale restaurants if it didn’t always get raves enough about its Royale with Cheese (named from Pulp Fiction) to make this category. Besides that fine burger, they have the most amazing French Country Bistro comfort food, a beautiful outdoor patio and lawn, and a full roster of parties and other events. They always throw the most happening soirees during any big Austin festival like SXSW.

Arlo’s, 1700 E. 6th
This food truck is where you want to go if you’re vegetarian/vegan and craving a totally satisfying, juicy, cheesy, drip down your chin burger. And non-vegetarians will love it just as much, I promise! Their Bac’N Cheez Burger is tha bomb; I don’t know how they do it, but it hits the exact right spot for any burger, vegan or not! Trust me on this. A side of sweet potato fries makes it perfection. The truck is parked at The Grackle bar, which is a mighty fine place to grab a drink and hang.
TOP 3 BARBECUE JOINTS:
Franklin, 900 E 11th
This is possibly the most famous name in Texas barbecue, visited by many a Travel Channel and Food Network show and written up in the New York Times. Aaron Franklin, truly is a master, and even has his own TV show. Jimmy Kimmel, Anthony Bourdain and President Obama have eaten here. This place is as old-school as it gets; hasn’t changed much in a decade. It really does live up to the hype, and the line can be hours long. It opens at 11 am every day (though people queue up long before that), and stays open til they sell out.
La Barbecue, 2027 E. Cesar Chavez
Located inside the Quickie Pickie (a great small market to shop as well), this gets my vote for fave Austin BBQ. It’s owned by spouses LeAnn Mueller (of the famed Mueller BBQ family) and Alison Clem, and there’s usually a line out the door here as well. Personally I love their pulled pork, and they also do these amazing sandwiches with their homemade jalapeno sausage topped with barbecue. You might go into a food coma afterward.
Kerlin BBQ, 1700 E. Cesar Chavez
This food truck gets consistently good reviews for its barbecue and sides (which are way above the ordinary), even though it’s relatively new. Their sampler platter is a favorite, and they also sell kolaches which are fantastic. It shares space with Vera Cruz tacos, which is a phenomenal place as well.
TOP 3 ASIAN FOOD SPOTS:
Dee Dee, 2500 E. 6th
I can’t tell you how excited I was when this WONDERFUL Northern Thai Street Food truck moved from Cesar Chavez (already close) to right across the street from my complex! This is not only the best Thai food on the east side, it’s also hands-down one of the top 2 or 3 Thai food spots in all of Austin (If you want to know my other go-to restaurants, check out Sway and Titaya’s). This food truck is run by husband and wife team Justin & Lakana (she is from Northern Thailand). The name Dee Dee means “good good” in Thai — and yes, it is that good that you have to say so twice. Seriously, if you like Thai food, stop in here. They only have a few things on the menu, but wow, do they do those 3 things spot on. Their food can be pretty spicy (it’s authentic, after all!) so don’t be afraid to ask them to dial it down a notch or two if you want.
Ramen Tatsu-ya, 1600 E. 6th
Since the first of these restaurants opened in North Austin, it was immensely popular, always with looooong lines out the door and waits of up to an hour or two. So you can imagine how freaking excited East Austin was when we found out that it was coming into the defunct Qui restaurant space, left from disgraced celebrity Top Chef Paul Qui. It just opened in summer 2018, and if you like ramen, DO NOT MISS IT! They have a pretty fun story, too — the owners and co-chefs, Tatsu Aikawa and Takuya Matsumoto, were hip-hop DJs when they met. Their mission is to bring Japanese soul food to Austin.

Kemuri Tatsu-ya, 2713 E. 2nd
Along with Thai food, ramen is by far my favorite Asian food. Fortunately, there are two of the best ramen spots in town within walking distance of my loft (see above). Kemuri is really fun and unique — it serves a kinda crazy combination of Texas and Japanese food, like brisket ramen. They also have things like authentic Karaage chicken, and a great menu of Chinmi “exotic and rareties” that is rated for its weird factor by rating each one from Not Funky (Kenny G) to You Nasty (James Brown). The décor is also a fantastically oddball mix of old Japanese signs and other relics with Texas kitsch (it used to be a barbecue place, and lots of those items remain). Great back garden/patio that usually projects films on a wall. Just a weird, fun place with really incredible food and cocktails.
TOP 3 UPSCALE RESTAURANTS:
Juniper, 2400 E. Cesar Chavez
This has been open a couple of years now, in a newly restored mixed-use center that’s home to Blue Owl Brewing, SpraTX graffiti/art shop, and a host of art and design studios. It’s refined Italian, with a seasonal menu that varies according to the ingredients available from the local farms and purveyors that they source from. Worth a little splurge (higher priced, but not crazy expensive).
Monger’s, 2401 E. Cesar Chavez
This is one of my go-to places for either a nice dinner or when I’m craving seafood. One partner runs the kitchen while the other runs the small seafood market where you can buy amazingly fresh fish, shrimp and other items to cook, straight from the Gulf Coast. They have a fantastic raw bar, and lots of great shareable plates. If you love seafood, I highly recommend this place.

Suerte, 1800 E 6th
Opened in 2018, this is a fancy Mexican restaurant that deserves recognition. The ambience and service are great in my experience, and the food is above average in a city chock-full of Tex-Mex food. It’s a great place to stop for Lucky Hour (as they call their happy hour) from 5-6 every day.
TOP 3 CRAFT BREWPUBS:
Hops & Grain, 507 Calles

This was the first micro-brewery in East Austin, and it’s my favorite. Not only do they have great beers, a good inside area and outside patio, and food truck; they are also very community oriented, with lots of events from trivia nights and live music to beer and yoga days. Dog friendly, tours and tastings, and all around great people! Tours of the brewery are given on Friday at 5pm and Saturday at 2pm and 4pm. Tours are FREE, & last about 45 minutes.
Lazarus Brewing, 1902 E. 6th
This is one of the newest brewery additions to the thriving East Austin craft beer scene, and extremely popular. It’s housed in a beautiful building, with a super cozy atmosphere and very dog-friendly. They serve not only their beers but also housemade root beer and kombucha, and they serve tacos if you’re hungry.
Blue Owl Brewing, 2400 E. Cesar Chavez
This brewery stands out because they do sour mash brewing. I haven’t quite acquired the taste for that, so honestly I don’t frequent this place. But when I feel like something different, it’s great, and it is a pretty wonderful little spot.

TOP 3 WATERING HOLES:
La Holly, 2500 E. 6th
This spot has a groovy neighborhood vibe, and the owner Simon Madera is a super friendly guy who’s often behind the bar. They specialize in spirits from Mexico: tequila, mezcal and the harder-to-find sotol, raicilla and bacanora popular south of the border. Nice beer garden patio out back, with the Taco Flats food truck.

Whisler’s, 1816 E. 6th
This has hands-down been my very favorite cocktail bar spot in East Austin since the day it opened. And yes, I was there the day it opened (in fact, actually before hand, for their soft pre-opening). The hand-crafted cocktails, and the bar/service staff, are all way above par. But the building and setting itself is also way cool, built completely with all kinds of salvaged and reused materials. It’s pretty fun to just wander around and check it all out. Upstairs you’ll find Mezcalería Tobalá, a mezcal bar which is really serious about the spirit! The very excellent Thai Kun food truck is also parked here (Whisler’s doesn’t serve food).
Kitty Cohen’s, 2211 Webberville Rd.
I like this place so much I had my birthday party there. It’s a really fun 1960s Palm Springs, Dean Martin/Frank Sinatra kind of vibe. Its big draw is the great yard/patio, with a shallow pool that guests can sit along and dip their feet into — refreshing! Be sure to check out the bathrooms, even if you don’t have to go.
TOP 3 LIVE MUSIC/DANCE SPOTS:
White Horse, 500 Comal St.
This is absolutely a must-go spot, not just on the East Side but for anyone visiting Austin. It’s a true Texas honkytonk — but total Austin style. Don’t think twangy country-western music; the nightly live music here is all about swing, rockabilly and blues. It’s a super hip yet casual place, with good strong drinks that are cheap by Austin standards. There are always a lot of great dancers, and they do lesson nights as well. A guaranteed fun night out!

Ah Sing Den, 1100 E. 6th
I’ve loved this place since it was East Side Showroom, which was started by a mother and daughter team. After years of that super cool steampunk saloon, the team decided to give the place a new look, vibe and name. Ah Sing Den is named after the Victorian London opium den that was frequented by the likes of Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. It’s super swank, the décor is to die for, and they make some of the best cocktails in town. A full menu of Asian-inspired dishes won’t leave you hungry, and the calendar of live music and other events will entertain.
Esquina Tango, 209 Pedernales St.
This is a lively tango and salsa place, owned by an Argentine husband and wife team. They offer a host of dance and Spanish language classes, with live music, dance parties and festivals almost every weekend. Check out their calendar before heading over to see what’s on.
TOP 3 VEGAN EATERIES:
Counter Culture, 2337 E. Cesar Chavez

Super innovative vegan fare, this place is the go-to fave not just in East Austin, but the city as a whole, for many veg-heads. It’s housed in a hard-to-miss bright blue building, and also serves beer and wine. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’ve seen local celebs here (Giancarlo Esposito and Matthew McConaughey), as well as kooky pets on the animal friendly patio, including a parrot perched on a customer’s shoulder and an iguana on a leash.
The Vegan Nom, 2324 E. Cesar Chavez
The home of the “Rock’n vegan tacos,” if you are veg and craving a taco, hit this food truck up. Right across the street from Counter Culture, at the super-cool Soma Vida complex (you might want to stop in there for yoga or a massage, or daily co-working passes if you need that).
Mr. Natural, 1901 E. Cesar Chavez
This place has been around forever; it is THE long-time, go-to, natural and vegan food place in Austin, with several locations including east. They’ve been around since 1988. They offer a “choose your own” deli area (focus on healthy Tex-Mex, but not limited to that), bakery, and market. They also have a lot of community events such as yoga and meditation, On the first Sunday of every month they feature an All Vegan Brunch Buffet.

Restaurants across the state have slowly started to reopen, and close, and reopen again over the past few months. It can be a lot to keep up with, and there’s still a large degree of uncertainty around the safety of dining out. Want to know what’s safe? Eating at home. And if you’re as bored of canned tuna as we are by now, here are a few great meals we’ve had recently that you can get for takeout or delivery.

In a parking lot off Manor Road, Abo Youssef is a food truck that’s putting out some of our favorite Mediterranean food in Austin right now. We usually grab a chicken shawarma wrap, but we went with the Mix Grill Plate this time. It comes with a few giant scoops of grilled lamb and chicken kabob on a bed of rice, with a generous amount of hummus and tabbouleh salad on the side. The portions here are really big - this lasted us two full meals.
Raphael Brion Kome $ $ $ $ Japanese , Raw Bar , Sushi in North Loop $$$$ 5301 Airport Blvd
If we remember correctly - but at this point, really, what is time and memory? - Kome’s bento box was enormous, full of many things including a sushi roll, sashimi, karaage, miso soup, a salad, and more. It was a commitment. But since the pandemic hit, Kome has changed up their menu a bit. Now there are about a dozen different bento boxes, and they’re much more manageable affairs, as they come with a main, a side salad, pickles, edamame, and a seaweed salad. We got the one with grilled mackerel filet, daikon, and ginger. We’d definitely order this again - heed their warnings about the bones though.
Nicolai McCrary Evangeline Café $ $ $ $ Cajun in South Austin $$$$ 8106 Brodie Ln
Evangeline Cafe - in South Austin, near Brodie and William Cannon - has a great menu of Cajun classics, but where they really shine is with their po-boys. They have most of the standard offerings here - roast beef, shrimp, catfish, oyster, and crawfish - the last of which we went with. It comes on fresh-baked French bread, dressed with lettuce, tomato, onion, and a few different sauces that you can choose from, including the ever-mysterious “Evangeline sauce” (we still don’t know what it is). Eat it on a humid Summer afternoon like we did, you’ll feel just a little bit more like you’re in Louisiana.
Raphael Brion Comadre Panaderia $$$$
Comadre Panaderia is a newish online-only bakery with modern spins on pan-Latinx sweet and savory breads. We ordered a literal mountain of things, including a pistachio concha, a pink cake made with heirloom corn, a canela roll with dulce de leche frosting, diablitos (cuernitos made with a guajillo chili), and a blueberry pay de queso. Everything was excellent, and is made with whole grains and organic, locally-sourced ingredients. We also got a six-pack of their hand-rolled flour tortillas - they were so good, we wish we had gotten more. How it works: The order form goes live Tuesdays through Wednesdays (or until sold out), with local delivery on Fridays and Saturdays in Austin and San Antonio. Payment is through Venmo. Keep an eye on their Instagram account.
Week Of August 31 Raphael Brion House Of Three Gorges $$$$ 8557 Research Blvd Suite 144
We’d been meaning to check out the Sichuan restaurant House of Three Gorges ever since it opened right around when the pandemic first hit. We’re glad we finally made it. Everything we ordered was excellent: cumin lamb, Sichuan dry stir-fried chicken, and eggplant in garlic sauce. The pork wontons in the spicy soup were fantastic and clearly homemade. They’re located near 183 and Ohlen, in the same shopping center as Din Ho and Ramen Tatsu-Ya, and the contactless pickup was super easy.
Nicolai McCrary Xian Sushi & Noodle $ $ $ $ Japanese , Chinese , Sushi in Mueller $$$$ 1801 E 51st St #C370
We usually find ourselves at Xian for their excellent hand-pulled noodles, but they also make some really solid sushi. We got the Sushi Plate this time, with eight pieces of assorted nigiri and a spicy tuna roll to round things out. It’s an already-affordable sushi box that gets even cheaper if you order it during their lunch special hours. Of course, if you really want to get the full Xian experience, you should probably get the sushi and some noodles. You’ll be full for a week, but it’ll be worth it.
Raphael Brion Shishman Mediterranean $ $ $ $ Middle Eastern in Central Austin , Crestview $$$$ 7020 Easy Wind Dr #150
Shishman Mediterranean Grill has been a go-to lunch spot of ours, for those moments when you realize that it’s 1:30pm and you’re a little dizzy because you haven’t had lunch yet. They turn out the food fast, and more importantly, the food is consistently great. Both the platters and pita sandwiches, with either shawarma, gyro, grilled chicken, or falafel are excellent. Get both the red and white sauce, and make sure to order extra homemade pita bread.
Nicolai McCrary K-Bop $ $ $ $ Korean in Campus $$$$ 2002 Guadalupe St., Suite B
K-Bop is a small restaurant on The Drag offering up a tight menu of Korean classics like bibimbap, kimchi fried rice, bulgogi, and their namesake, kimbap - Korean-style sushi rolls. The kimbap here comes stuffed with a variety of options - like cooked tuna, kimchi, and even cheese - but we like the beef bulgogi version. All of the rolls are packed full of egg, pickled daikon, carrots, lettuce, fish cakes, mayo, and a slightly-sweet rice. And somehow each bite just feels more savory than the last. They’ve also got a full menu of boba, milk tea, and smoothies.
Week Of August 24 Nicolai McCrary Cuba512 $ $ $ $ $$$$ 6800 West Gate Blvd #112
We recently wrote about the lechon asado loaded fries from Cuba512 in our best loaded fries in Austin guide, but if you’re not feeling potato-inclined, there’s a number of other great Cuban dishes you can get here, including the classic El Cubano that we really enjoyed. It’s filled with roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard - all on pressed Cuban bread. No fancy tricks or ingredients here, just a simple, classic sandwich done well. Their downtown location is currently closed, but their South Austin location off William Cannon and West Gate is open for takeout. Bring it home, make yourself a nice rum cocktail, open up all the windows, and pretend you’re on vacation somewhere tropical.
Raphael Brion Artipasta $ $ $ $ Italian in South Austin $$$$ 7800 South 1st St
As you might guess from the name, Artipasta serves fresh pasta, and it’s possibly some of the best in town. We got the tagliatelle with the house meat sauce as well as the casarecce with basil pesto, and both were excellent. It’s located in the spacious Thicket Food Park in South Austin - it was so chill and tranquil that we sat down at one of the picnic tables and just ate our takeout there. Pair it with a San Pellegrino and pretend like you’re in Italy - it’s not like we’ll be allowed to travel there anytime soon.
Nicolai McCrary Thai Thani $ $ $ $ Thai in East Austin , Manor $$$$ 2101 Manor Rd
Thai Thani is easy to miss. It’s a food trailer behind another food trailer behind a gas station on Manor Road. But if you manage to find your way there, you’ll be greeted with some really great Thai food. We went with a chicken pad thai this time around, and the portion was enough to last us a couple of meals. But if you’re looking to round out your meal a little more, we also really like their pad see ew and stir-fried basil beef. And if they have their mango with sticky rice dessert, it’s the perfect closer.
Raphael Brion Salt & Time Cafe $ $ $ $ American , Sandwiches , Deli in Downtown Austin $$$$ 422 W 5th St. #C
On the northwest corner of Republic Square in downtown Austin is Salt & Time Cafe, a new all-day cafe with outdoor seating from the people behind the popular East Side butcher shop and restaurant, Salt & Time. We picked up some sandwiches, including the Jambon Beurre, featuring mezcal-glazed ham, dill pickles, and a very French amount of salted butter, all on a demi-baguette. It’s enough to make you do things like wear a beret, smoke Gauloises cigarettes, and go on strike (for more sandwiches like this).
Week Of August 17 Nicolai McCrary Paprika ATX $$$$ 6519 N Lamar Blvd
Paprika opened up relatively quietly back in late 2019 and has been slinging out great tacos and tortas ever since. We enjoyed the taco de carnitas and taco de nopalitos, the latter of which comes packed full of well-seasoned prickly pear cactus and refried lentils. Every taco gets paired with a specific salsa - a really nice touch that elevates the experience a bit. The menu changes a bit depending on the time and day, so take a look at their website for the most up-to-date menu information before heading over.
Raphael Brion Usta Kababgy $$$$ 9717 N Lamar Blvd Unit C2
Usta Kababgy opened just last year on Lamar just north of Rundberg, and the restaurant is turning out some really great Middle Eastern/Halal food. The charcoal-grilled kebabs were excellent, including the Iraqi and chicken ones. The tabbouleh was bright, and the pizza-like flatbread - we got the one that’s half zaatar, half feta cheese - was fantastic. But what stole the show was the fluffy and tender house-made bread. Order extra.
Katherine Lewin Franklin Barbecue $ $ $ $ BBQ in East Austin $$$$ 900 E 11th St
Ordering takeout from Franklin Barbecue is one of the absolute best things you can do for yourself and for the lucky people you like enough to share with. We can also confirm that this barbecue tastes just as good without the usual five-hour wait/tailgate. To order, you just select a day and time (lunch hours only) up to one week in advance on their site, pick your meats (in 1 lb increments, except for links of sausage), and remind yourself that spending this kind of money is worth it when you get to eat this brisket. The pick-up situation is easy, too - staffers will bring your order right to your trunk. Get it home as quickly as you can, have the lunch spread you deserve, and spend the rest of the day knowing you made excellent decisions.
Raphael Brion Charm BBQ Chicken $$$$ 12233 Ranch Road 620 N
The dining room at Charm BBQ Chicken in north Austin is closed, so they’re not doing barbecue at the moment. But as the name suggests, their other focus is fried chicken. And we’re happy to report that the fried chicken is exceptional, with a shatteringly crisp skin (just ask for sauce on the side so you can toss the chicken in it when you get home). The rest of the menu has classic dishes like homemade and juicy mandoo dumplings, beef bulgogi, and bibimbap that comes with instructions on how to put it together - it wouldn’t travel well otherwise.
Week Of August 10 Raphael Brion SeoulJu Korean Kitchen & Bar $ $ $ $ Bar Food , Korean in North Lamar $$$$ 9515 N Lamar Blvd Ste 230
The North Lamar Korean restaurant Seoulju has been takeout only since the pandemic hit, and just last week they launched delivery of both food and drink. Which means that you can get dishes like Korean Fried Chicken, kimchi stew, and spicy rice cakes, alongside beer and soju delivered right to your door. We opted for two sauces on our still-crispy chicken wings: Korean Sweet & Chili and Extra Spicy Sweet & Chili. Get the extra spicy.
Raphael Brion Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop $ $ $ $ Tacos , Mexican , Cafe/Bakery , Tex-Mex in East Austin $$$$ 2305 E 7th St
The dining room at Joe’s Bakery, the family-run East Side Tex-Mex staple, is closed. For now they’re sticking to a drive-in model (you can’t even call ahead or order online). You park, waitstaff comes out and asks if you need a menu, they take your order, and the food comes out fast. We recently got an order of breakfast tacos (migas con todo and a bacon, egg, and cheese) as well as a side order of carne guisada and a whole bunch of their fluffy homemade flour tortillas. Everything was excellent, as always. You don’t even need to ask for their spicy salsa - they’ll put so many containers in your takeout bag that you’ll have leftover salsa for days and days.

The menu at Gossip Shack consists of just a few items - chicken, waffles, and waffle fries. But everything they offer, they do exceptionally well. Their wings are some of our favorite in town, due in large part to their unique offering of flavors, like jerk chicken or their signature CPR (Cajun, parmesan, ranch). And those are exactly what we got - large, perfectly fried chicken wings coated in Cajun spices, ranch seasoning, and enough parmesan to make a bowl of spaghetti jealous. Orders can take a while and they often sell out before their stated hours, so call ahead and get your order in ahead of time.

We love a lot of things about La Fruta Feliz - their barbacoa de chivo (barbecue goat) is a favorite on tacos, and their al pastor is excellent - but if you’re looking for a really good and hearty lunch, their torta is a clear winner. Coming in at a massive 12 pounds (don’t fact check us on that), it’s packed full of meat - in this case, al pastor - and veggies for just under $5. They also have a huge fruit and veggie juice list, so go ahead and throw on a Digestivo (papaya, orange, and carrots) to help you get it all down.
Week Of August 3 Raphael Brion Carpenters Hall $ $ $ $ American , Seafood in South Lamar $$$$ 400 Josephine St
Carpenters Hall at the Carpenter Hotel has switched to takeout only, and they’re selling a cold fried chicken picnic for two or four. For $28, the picnic is not an insignificant amount of food, consisting of a half chicken (with a ranch dressing and spicy honey), potato salad, roasted green beans, and a cabbage slaw. Plus two very good chocolate chip cookies. You will have leftovers.
Raphael Brion Slab BBQ $ $ $ $ Southern , BBQ in Wooten $$$$ 9012 Research Blvd Ste C4
The Slab Slider Trio at Slab BBQ is exactly what it claims to be: three barbecue sliders. They’re mini versions of their much larger sandwiches: the Notorious P.I.G. (pulled pork, mustard coleslaw), the Texas O.G. (brisket, pickles, onions), and the Chicken W.A. (smoked chicken, coleslaw). But just because they’re smaller doesn’t mean they don’t pack the same flavor punch. And at $12, it’s a perfect lunch for those of us afraid of a singular sandwich commitment. Why have just one sandwich when you can have three, each one better than the next?

Lechonera El Pachango specializes in roast pork - something they’ve proven to do exceptionally well in the short month that they’ve been operating out of a seemingly-abandoned gas station on East MLK. We weren’t sure what we wanted to try when we pulled up, so we decided to just go with our nose (and a little guidance from the owner). We ended up walking out with a plate of slow-roasted pork, rice with peas, and yuca with pickled red onions. The pork was juicy and topped with a sauce made from a bit of the marinade and lime that we couldn’t get enough of. The yuca con mojo comes out in a stewed-consistency, making it fork-tender and bursting with tangy flavor. And the rice was the perfect intake-vehicle for all of it.
Week Of July 27 Raphael Brion Hank’s $$$$ 5811 Berkman Dr
We’re working on a guide to takeout Happy Hours, and the Windsor Park neighborhood restaurant Hank’s has a very solid offering. Every day from 3-6:30pm, you can get very good and very inexpensive frozen palomas, frose, and frozen margaritas - they’re $5 each. Order online, and pick up at their convenient drive thru takeout window. Instead of racing home with your frozen cocktails - drive safe - it’s perhaps better to bring a cooler.
Nicolai McCrary Bodhi Viet Veggie $ $ $ $ Vegetarian , Vietnamese , Vegan in North Austin $$$$ 2301 W Parmer Ln
Bodhi Viet is a small food truck in North Austin with a 100% vegan Vietnamese menu, offering everything from banh mi and pho, to Vietnamese coffee and boba tea. We really liked the banh mi we had here, stuffed with a spicy lemongrass seitan, and filled with fresh vegetables that they grow themselves. And the best part is that they’re only $3, so you can throw in an order of their pineapple curry that we also really enjoyed and still get away for under $10.
Raphael Brion Vic & Al’s $ $ $ $ Sandwiches , Cajun in Cherrywood , East Austin $$$$ 2406 Manor Road
Vic & Al’s is the new Cajun restaurant from the people that brought you the ever-popular Italian food trailer, Patrizi’s. We really like the po-boys, especially the super-tender blackened catfish and the Cochon De Lait, which has a sauce that’s almost like tonkotsu broth. The vacuum-packed, pre-made cocktails are also fun, including the very good made-for-summer Orange Drink (it’s very orange, but it also has tequila). Vic & Al’s is open for both takeout and delivery.
Week Of July 20 Raphael Brion Bufalina Deli $ $ $ $ Sandwiches , Italian in East Austin $$$$ 500 San Marcos St #105
Bufalina Deli isn’t technically a new restaurant - instead it’s a simple lunch-and-dinner concept operating out of Wright Bros. Brew & Brew with a variety of salads and Italian sandwiches. On a recent takeout order, we really liked the summer tomato salad and the meatball parm hoagie. And since you’re ordering from The Brew & Brew, you can also get coffee, beer, and wine. Place your order online and pick it up at The Brew & Brew.
Raphael Brion Ramen 512 $ $ $ $ Japanese , Ramen in Central Austin , Wooten $$$$ 8023 Burnet Rd
You might have heard about Ramen 512 and their often sold out popups - yes, the ramen was that good. But now they’ve found a permanent home, inside the new “cloud kitchen” concept Kitchen United Mix. This place currently has three options: Hakata Classic (a pork tonkotsu), the BGO (the Hakata Classic with black garlic oil), and the Sunset Red (a spicy version of the Hakata Classic). We recently tried the BGO and the Sunset Red - the broth for each was super creamy and rich, as a pork tonkotsu should be, and the spice level on the Sunset Red was in fact actually spicy. You can order the ramen ready-to-eat, or you can cook the noodles at home, with very precise instructions. Takeout and delivery are available.

Despite the small space - Lula Mae’s is located in a small gas station off Airport and 38 ½ St. - this place manages to put out some really great barbecue, with side dishes that are tasty enough to order on their own. We really like the brisket and the pork chop - the latter of which is served as a giant, whole chop with a smoky exterior and a juicy center. You can get all of the meats by the pound, in combo-plates, or as a sandwich.
Raphael Brion DipDipDip Tatsu-Ya $ $ $ $ Japanese in North Austin , North Loop $$$$ 7301 Burnet Rd
The dining room at DipDipDip Tatsu-Ya, the Japanese shabu-shabu place from the Ramen Tatsu-ya team, has been closed since the pandemic hit. But they did what people do these days, and pivoted. They transformed the restaurant into a takeout-only pop-up serving sandwiches that mash up the French dip and shabu-shabu, with excellent results. Our favorite is the beef sandwich with a wasabi ranch and the pork sandwich with kimchi and a curry cabbage slaw. For dipping, you can choose between an umami jus and a spicy miso (they recommend which dipping sauce to get for each sandwich). Make sure to get an order of the aptly named “Pow!tato” - a side dish with some of the most impossibly crispy smashed potato chunks we’ve ever had.

The Haitian food truck Kreyol Korner - off of North Lamar near Koenig - is usually open only on Saturdays, but it’s worth waiting for the weekend to roll around to try this place. Check their Facebook for the current menu and opening days and hours. Standouts from a recent meal include stuffed plantain cups and the super-tender stewed chicken combo. Also, make sure to ask for extra pikliz, the Haitian pickled vegetable relish.

Otherside Deli makes some of our favorite sandwiches in Austin, from cheesesteaks and meatball parm subs, to Italian subs and patty melts. But if you’re a first-timer at Otherside, chances are you’re here for the reuben - loaded up with their housemade pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and russian dressing, between two slices of grilled rye bread. Keep an eye on their Instagram for some fun specials, like the Outer Limit Fries that come loaded up with all of the typical reuben fillings, but on a bed of waffle fries. They’re currently accepting takeout orders from their shop near 34th and Lamar.

Ever since they originally opened, Ramen Tatsu-Ya has been vehemently anti-takeout. But then the pandemic hit, and they pivoted to takeout-only (and have stayed that way ever since). We recently picked up some of their ramen and it tasted just like how we remembered it at the restaurant. The toppings and noodles come in their own container (that way the noodles don’t get soggy), and the broth is packed in a deli pint container that’s thoroughly wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent in-car disasters. The instructions are clear: heat the broth, do not boil, then add the broth to the noodles and toppings. And with three locations in Austin - north, east, and south - ramen is never too far away.
Week Of July 6 Nicolai McCrary Island Fork - Caribbean Cuisine $$$$ 100 12th St
Island Fork in Pflugerville specializes in Caribbean food, like jerk chicken, curry goat, and escovitch fish (fried fish topped with pickled vegetables). They also have jerk-seasoned burgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as a menu of “rasta pastas” that feature creamy, Caribbean-inspired pasta sauces served over noodles and a variety of meats, like oxtail and jerk salmon. We usually get the jerk chicken here, served with coconut rice and grilled sweet plantains. Make sure to get a Caribbean soda as well - we like the Irish Moss and Ting.
Nicolai McCrary Cuantos Tacos $ $ $ $ Tacos , Mexican in East Austin $$$$ 1108 East 12th St
Blink and you might miss this little food trailer on East 12th street, which has some of the best Mexico City-style street tacos in Austin right now. Cuantos Tacos has a tight menu of classics like suadero and beef cheeks, as well as a few less-common options, like buche and longaniza. Everything can be made as tacos or quesadillas, and at $2 and $5, respectively, the prices are affordable enough that you can probably try a few items off the menu. We like just about everything they carry, but our favorites are probably the champiñones quesadillas and the suadero tacos.

You read that right, ladies and gents. 2019 marks the decisive end to a decade of Halloween-inspired, pop culture infused music productions, which have been in production since the series’ humble beginnings back in Fall 2009. Right off the bat, you may have a question or two popping up. Why is ELECTROWEEN ending on its decade milestone 2019 mix? Will there be more EDM mixes coming in the future?

Setting The Stage: First Mention of the Series’ End
Before jumping into ELECTROWEEN 2019 details, I need to spend a little time establishing some relevant details from a year ago.
Last Fall, shortly after we had released ELECTROWEEN 2018, I flew down to San Diego to visit Matt and his girlfriend Jessica for the weekend of Halloween. We saw the Halloween movie reboot, carved up some pumpkins, dropped by Tatsu Ramen in L.A. for some delicious bowls of noodles, and drove up to Universal Studios Hollywood for their Halloween Horror Nights (in particular, to check out the Stranger Things attraction). We had a wonderful time together.

It was during this visit when I announced to Matt that 2019 would mark the final year for the ELECTROWEEN series, ending a solid run of releases spanning our 20s to our early 30s. It has become a cherished tradition… something we’ve always looked forward to with the start of each new calendar year. ELECTROWEEN is Halloween for us, and a token of our years of friendship and love for the arts, electronic dance music, cult video games and films. In short, it is the summation of everything we love, and have come to love. This was bittersweet to talk about, but in the end it’s for the right reasons.
The rationale behind this decision is, for the most part, straight-forward. Since jump starting my DJ hobby back in 2006, I have released over 30 studio production mixes, manned two radio shows ([OuteR HeaveN] and PLURALITY at WSNC Radio), and performed countless live DJ sets at house parties, bars and private events.
In many ways, I’ve exhausted myself from the art form and feel a burning need to start creating my own music, rather than curating the works of others as I’ve done for the majority of my adult years. But also, life has happened, too.
Other Happenings That Have Influenced This Decision
During the same weekend I visited Matt last October, I simultaneously released my second album, Gravitational Waves, for my chillsynth project Gravity Mission. The album took three years to envision, create and release (collaborating remotely for the entire process) after a six year dry spell from our initial 2012 debut Before The Spoken Word. I came to realize the creative process was deeply rewarding and allowed me to evolve artistically in ways I had not previously imagined. In a real sense, it showed me that the barriers to creating music only exist in my head, and that changing course at any time is entirely possible.

Lastly, life changes have been a considerable factor, often left out of the picture here on GAIA BROS. Having moved eight times since the release of my initial 2009 mix, I’ve been feeling the need to get more serious about putting down roots, connecting to a single place and getting acquainted with my local community. After my wife and I bought our first home in 2017, I started switching gears and pursuing other interests, including gardening, foraging, craft beer, table top gaming, GM’ing and traveling. It’s been a wonderful past few years, but a lot to handle. Thus I’ve had to make some tough decisions and learn to be more realistic with my time commitments.
“Tell Us About ELECTROWEEN 2019 Already, Please!”
Whew! Thanks for hanging in here for the entire reason why you’re reading this post! Let’s jump right into ELECTROWEEN 2019 — its inception, influences and more.
As the crown jewel in this decade long saga, ELECTROWEEN 2019 needed to be fantastically epic in a way that other mixes couldn’t be. It needed flair, funk and spirit on all levels. But most importantly, it absolutely HAD to be a fun reminder of why we started doing this whole thing in the first place. Returning full circle to our beginnings was key.
Where it all began: ELECTROWEEN 2009 (released October 16, 2009)
I began by looking back on our early mixes and questioning why we fell in love with the concept of merging EDM tracks and jack-o’-lantern heads together. We were creating something different, something bold — a novel form of expression that did not yet exist in the world. Several tracks started to stand out, and they were always the ones that jacked our bodies in ways unlike anything else. That’s when the realization struck: our final mixes for the ELECTROWEEN series needed to be celebratory and sentimental, using tracks with massive swing and vibe that pulse with uplifting energy and emotion.
This led to months of heavy Spotify rotations and research, ultimately pointing to the spiritual successor of the 70s: Nu Disco! A long time fan of Daft Punk, their French house discography was a great starting place for finding similar artists and classics. What originally felt like a monumental undertaking quickly became a super synthesized formula for hot disco beats and flashing synths, and the energy continued to pick up from there!
September Reunion in Portland, Oregon
A few weeks back, Matt flew up to Portland to celebrate the end of the ELECTROWEEN series. We GAIA BROS reunited over glorious moments of food, drink and beats at home, while foraging in the woods for Chanterelles, and driving out to the coast. Matt and I carved up our pumpkin helmets for the last time and fully embraced the defining characteristic of our early mixes.
For the first time in seven years, we embarked on a photoshoot with gold and silver capes in search of Portland’s most aesthetically gratifying street art. Some gloomy weather rolled in, but we ended up working with the rainfall to leverage its luminous quality for the end product. Below is a gallery of the final images processed from the shoot, which we have included within the download files for the 2019 mixes. VII’s Decade Celebration Mix Liner Notes
From Scott: My tenth and final mix for the ELECTROWEEN series touches on the things most sentimental to me. It is everything I have to give, and everything I could ever say, in a timeframe just short of an hour and a half. This is the longest production I’ve created to date, and looking back on it, I never wanted a single moment of it to end. The mix embodies the essence of the long and wholesome nights spent with close friends and loved ones… those irreplaceable times that will forever shine in our minds and hearts.
My 2019 mix is divided up into three seamlessly transitioning acts: a soaring and lofty Halloween introduction at-length (VG OST and Synthwave), an all night long celebration (Nu Disco), and finally a sincere and heartfelt closure, painting a pensive mood with vulnerable feelings of love, melancholy and, ultimately, acceptance.
Samples from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night are most prevalently stitched in between tracks. I completely fell in love with this game upon its release this past summer. Matt and I have patiently waited four years for this game, as we were original backers from the April 2015 Kickstarter campaign. It’s clear that Koji Igarashi and Michiru Yamane have put their souls into this beautiful masterwork. I also drew samples from other favorites including Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Game of Thrones, and 300, which all have their own places within the narrative of this work.
Having ventured into the darkness (perhaps a little too long) in years past, I’ve found my way back to the grooves that bring the “feel good” vibes in spades. I should note here that initially I had started working on this mix back in March 2019 in order to get a head start on the final mix concept. With that said, I am extremely satisfied with the end product. The coin design illustration I created for the cover art came together effortlessly based on the passion encompassing this special time. The whole process has been cathartic on a deep level. I’m grateful for these ten years of ELECTROWEEN and will always take them with me into whatever comes next. Special thanks goes to Matt for believing in this project and being a great collaborator, my wife Lindsey for her support and encouragement, and David for listening and being a loyal fan all these years.
Loveless’ Decade Celebration Mix Liner Notes
From Matt: OHHHHH MAN! Has it been a decade already? Where did all the time fly? I was just a wee lad yesterday bumping to Scott’s mixes and now I’m a seasoned vet of the Halloween variety. Tonight I am going to see Lana Del Rey with my girlfriend which will be a great cap on the end of ELECTROWEEN. Lana’s moody and melodic music is of a bygone era. She really evokes the spirit of ELECTROWEEN (side note: thank you to Jessica, my aforementioned girlfriend, for introducing Lana to me). This year I open with an instrumental and a remix of her first big hit, Video Games. A song that reminds me of a few weekends ago when I visited Scott.
We went mushroom foraging and shot the ELECTROWEEN liner photos. We haven’t shot photos like that since 2012 and it was amazing. The rain followed us every spot we went that day, brightening up all the colors. It was a tough shoot, but well worth the results.
We also went to a retro video game bar in Portland. There, we found the Sega Genesis version of TMNT: Hyperstone Heist. I haven’t played that game since I was in grade school and it was an incredible moment to share with Scott. The song “Video Games” evokes a simpler time with a tinge of melancholy. I think I’ll always pair this experience and that song together.
ELECTROWEEN is coming to an end. As I type that, my heart hurts. When Scott and I spoke about it earlier this year, it bothered me. I wasn’t upset with the decision, but ELECTROWEEN has become an integral part of who I am. However, it is important to move on and hone our passions. You cannot be married to every creative thing you do, and ELECTROWEEN has come to a fitting end. I think Scott and I will take everything we learned over the years and make something truly magical and different in 2020.
As for my mix, this year it was more personal. I skipped many of the video game pleasantries that have made up ELECTROWEEN’s previous iterations. I tried to throw in all styles of music we’ve used in the past 10 years and kept the overall mix more funky and positive. Halloween is for mischief after all!
In 2019 Loveless (my DJ persona) is locked away in a mental institution and the key is thrown away. This, of course, is the end of ELECTROWEEN and Loveless’ fate is uncertain, but you always gotta leave the end open for a sequel. Thank you to everyone who has listened to these mixes over the years. It has been a labor of love that I wouldn’t have traded for anything else. From now until the end of time the crisp Autumn air will always feel like ELECTROWEEN to me.
