Display of Chinese woodworking tools at the Takenaka Carpentry Museum in Kobe, Japan. I wasn't able to capture this in a photo, but the chisels are clearly laminated. There's only one other occasion that I've seen Chinese chisels up close and personal, and it appeared that those chisels had a laminated construction as well.

For me this isn't a surprise, as throughout Asian history there's a consistent pattern of techniques originating in China, and imported to Japan.

Une petite exposition temporaire, consacrée à la maison Chochiku-kyo de Koji Fujii nous fait découvrir cet architecte, qui bousculait le traditionalisme japonais sous l’influence du modernisme occidental.

Japanese planes and some chisels displayed in the Takenaka Carpentry Museum (^-^)

I appreciated how they showed the different uses of many of those planes in display :)

Once you understand their use and their limitations they are wonderful tools to use :3 The reasons I still use western style planes are that they can be adjusted without a hammer which is making them quieter which is a big plus when your living room is your workshop and that their cast iron soles don't wear that easily... 

Anyway I recognised most planes in this museum and greatly enjoyed seeing some that were new to me :) I wish I could have taken some home with me :D

Kanna opened a whole new world for me as back then they were affordable and  I had trouble with my wrists so I couldn’t use western planes too well but thanks to the friend who introduced me to Japanese saws I discovered Japanese planes as well and was finally able to do woodworking well :) So all I can do now I do owe to Japanese tools.

I especially liked the display that is used to show how grooves are cut into wood :) It is a very honest display showing all the necessary steps from sawing out the sides, chiseling out most of the waste, roughly flattening the bottom using a Kote Nomi (trowel chisel :), finish planing the bottom and finish planing the sides :)

They show a great amount of sharpening and finishing stones too :)

Control “The use of modern engineered lumber exemplifies the architect's will to eradicate all material unpredictability and inconsistency. Material behavior in traditional Japanese architecture also appears to be tightly managed. Most historical buildings exhibit exacting construction standards with precisely repeating elements, and many centuries-old structures remain in good condition today. Certainly, the shokunin, or craftsmen, demonstrate expert control over the behavior of wood and other materials. However, their approach is demonstrably different from that of industrial methods. Explains master carpenter Nishioka Tsunekazu in Master Carpenters in Japan, China, and Korea (Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum, 2014), “When selecting the lumber, it is not uniformity but rather individuality of trees that is important.”Rather than eradicate anisotropy and other material variations—such as in homogeneous plywood, glulam, and other contemporary wood composite materials—Japanese carpenters have sought to take advantage of these particular traits. Not only do they work with wood’s inherent grain by strategically orienting structural members to create strong connections and counteract sag, but they also use lumber’s original circumstances to their advantage. For example, shokunin can manage material changes by utilizing wood in the same orientation as its living state—for example, a south-facing tree will be used on the south side of a building. Furthermore, they design details that anticipate wood’s inevitable transformation over centuries, compensating for shrinkage and deflection.”
