There’s something so interesting about Akemi releasing the songbird and Takayoshi killing it, and while he doesn’t know of how personally Akemi is projecting onto it, he recognises that the act and then his mother subsequently being a dick about it upset Akemi and offers her two birds to make up for it and the way that like, the basic principle that it suggests that he might be actually kinda an alright guy and not the tyrant Akemi has been dreading, but also, the way he presents her with two birds locked in a cage is so interesting because it could suggest he does guess how personally she was projecting onto that bird and offer her a metaphor back: two birds, both hemmed in by the strings of power and status and expectations and court intrigue and the machinations of his mother. Two birds trapped in a cage together

Finally watched Blue Eye Samurai and damn, this show really is everything everyone's been saying. But also man, it's really making me think how much I wish non-animated shows focused on visuals. With everything being nearly-fully CGI, why do movies and shows have to look so... boring? If a friend group with a 90s camcorder can do it, why can't Disney (check out GGLS btw)? Idk, just frustrates me. Anyway, here's this show being eye candy.

thinking about mizu being raised as a princess of the itoh family from birth @roninzuzu
mizu was kept in an isolated palace because she was still proof of shame for the family. they spread rumors that she was sickly so she wouldn't go out in public and very few knew it was really because she was the daughter of a white man
she would visit edo just a couple of times a year or the itoh sibs would be sent to her palace to keep her company during winter
most of the time they would send just takayoshi and this made them especially close
her tutors slacked off with her education at times which included allowing her to train with the sword
when they were very young taka admitted he was mocked by the other noble kids because of his stuttering
they were both outcasts of the family due to being different
very tiny mizu grabbling her wooden sword with intent and saying "I'll protect you"
taka helped her with her studies in exchange, she thinks it's painfully boring but it allows him to train his speech so she accepts it

Thinking abt ages of blue eye samurai characters.
Mizu is like. Im pretty sure canonically 19/20. Im leaning towards 20, cuz im choosing to believe fowler meant 20 years literally n the white men came to japan also during the spring. Its just a very literal n simple read of the scene but yh im choosing that. Mizu is a spring bby :'))
Ringo, as carefree and unburdened as he may act, he is not a child or even a man-child, hes an adult man who's just very very sweet n cute. Imo? He's like. 23. Hes just infantilized a lot by his father n others that he seems way younger
Taigen is only a few months older than Mizu imo. They seemed basically the same age as children, but i think taigen is justtt a wee bit older, n yes he does use that against mizu when he finds out. Im votingggg a november bby. Between autumn n winter
Akemi i can only see as being 21/22 for some reason. Idk if its even logical i just see that. I need to research more into what edo period japan thought was normal for when a woman should beat children, but i think it was young, like maybe around the 18 years of age. It also depends on how old do those men think a woman needs to be before shes barren or smth. I do think akemi is 22, more because its obvious she is still young, but not a teenager.
For funsies i think takayoshi is like. Between 25-27. Im still undecided. But he is a few years older than akemi. I dont think hes older solely cuz hes the younger brother, n im just going off of what i see in their mother, but if she had the eldest son at 18, and i hc her as being around 45-50, then i think he has to be (the older brother) around 27-32. She probably had the two sons n they went "thats good enough, anyways", n left it at that.

So you know how Takayoshi gifted Akemi two songbirds in a cage together as a sincere apology for his mother?
I think those two birds are meant to symbolize both Akemi and Takayoshi. They are both marginalized in some way despite their privilege. Akemi as the daughter of a lord and Takayoshi as the disabled second son of the shogun are both denied agency in their roles despite their privilege. Takayoshi and Akemi both are song birds in a gilded cage. Two pawns to the political and social machinations of their parents. Akemi a victim to her father’s political aspirations and Takayoshi evidently a victim to his mother’s social manipulations.
(Aside: and possibly emotional abuse/neglect, with the way he was forbidden from speaking to women and who knows what actually happened to this first wife. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that it seems to me like this is all in service of maintaining a “respectable” image of the family, and cannot risk having people know he has a stutter. just spitballing here)
If I were to make a prediction for season 2, or a wish, it’s that I would like to see Akemi and Takayoshi form a genuine bond and alliance as two privileged-yet-marginalized individuals having to navigate a politically fraught and rigidly hierarchical society, and I think there’s at least some textual evidence to support this being a real possibility.
They demonstrate in the show Takayoshi is no fool and that he’s clearly an educated and well-read man. Take how he engages with Akemi’s poetry during sex compared to Taigen as an example. He simply has a disability and is somewhat submissive and subdued (likely due to being shamed or ridiculed for his stutter and getting little to no support as a child). They are capable of being intellectual equals. Any sort of power or control Akemi would gain over Takayoshi is by virtue of the kindness and empathy she is showing him, not because she’s outsmarting him. I believe Takayoshi is willingly surrendering himself to his wife and cognizant of this fact.
I think we may see a dynamic where Akemi will both advocate for her own political ends but also at times advocate for and try to protect her husband where she can where familial and interpersonal relationships are involved. I really really hope their union will be one that grows in political power through the healing power of love, compassion, and solidarity between two marginalized individuals.
They can acknowledge the humanity in each other and see each other as equals in their shared pain and victimization, and find empowerment through each other. If they cannot be their own masters at least they can be each other’s sole masters.
Takayoshi and Akemi may be two songbirds stuck in a gilded cage, stripped of their freedom and humanity. But they at least have each other and together they can harmonize.

More Actor/Hollywood BES AU
Thank you for the reception to the first set, I and my fellow conspirators BES nutjobs fans have more for you!
Ringo's 'hands' are actually prosthesis, unbeknownst to his fans. This is what they see when he is actually playing a concert. He takes them off when shooting for the series. His portrayal is true to his disability. (courtesy of @kaladinkholins ) It's a shocker when they discover he has no hands. Mikio is one of those amazing singer actors. Like he would be hella famous and getting roles in musicals/movies with songs. (Which is like every movie-) Then like a news publisher like tmz releases the fact Mizu and him was married and they released the divorce papers somehow to hurt Mizu’s career (from @doughnutshi )
Mizu's actress had been a child actor/Disney sitcom type and this is her first like adult role (by @apatheticallyromantic ) Mizu was one of those who started as a ten year old in a sitcom. She disappeared for a few years to 'find herself' and returned as an ass-kicking hero. The pegging scene with Fowler was one of the longest repetitive takes they did because Ise's actress kept laughing while ducked behind the counter. She had a hard time seeing through the mask and would accidentally poke Fowler's actor where she wasn't supposed to (he was wearing shorts the whole time and was such a good sport about it). Takayoshi's star used to be the lead singer in the hottest boyband in town. He turned to acting after they disbanded. When he shaved his hair for the role, his army of fans just about died.
Sword Father Eiji is legally blind and this helps with his portrayal. He usually orients himself prior to any shoot. He brings to set his guide dog, a black labrador named Boba. (@lillyblogsmizu)
The actress playing Kinuyo is the lead singer of a punk band. She is almost unrecognizable without her signature smeared mascara, powder white face and black lipstick. She has amazing, screeching, four octave vocals.
On downtime, the actors would hang out and jam. Takayoshi and Kinuyo would take turns singing or have duets, with Ringo providing guitar. Mizu sometimes joins in with her drums.
Heiji Shindo’s actor is a known method actor and absolute prankster. He likes leaving gag gifts for the actors. His favorite target of shenanigans is Madam Kaji and Daichi Tokonobu as they all used to star in the same sitcom.

more on princess mizu itoh hcs (a part 2 of this)(this accidentally became a small fic as I got invested) (tagging @roninzuzu bc who else shall feed on the dynamic between these two)
as mizu becomes a young woman there are talks of her being married off, but there's the obvious question of what noble house would accept a wife with eyes of an onryo
takayoshi is genuinely worried about his cousin and writes to her about it
her short and angry answer was "worry about your own wedding, I'll be nobody's wife"
it's around this time she runs away from home and takayoshi is sure he had something to do with it and blames himself for mizu being somewhere out there doing god knows what
and for this mizu I think it would be a lot like how akemi ran away to help taigen, except mizu is seeking revenge against the white men and doesn't want to use the itoh family's resources (lots of resentment for being treated like a monster)
it wouldn't be easy at all and she involves herself in lots of trouble that makes her realize that living as a princess, even a neglected one, is still skies above what a commoner samurai would have to go through (again this is akemi arc but add violence)
eventually she would cross paths with mikio (🤮) and maybe he would take her under his wing and care for her after she's severely wounded? it will also evolve into the romance we're acquainted with
now, after the telltale moment in which mikio calls her a monster for handing his ass on a plate during sparring, instead of the bounty hunters being sent to kill her, I can see it being the _itoh family soldiers_ sent to retrieve their princess who had eloped with some good for nothing farmer it seems
not only that, takayoshi is there with them, having missed his sister for a whole year and just relieved he found her again
"how did you find me?" she hissed with slitted eyes full of ire, knife secured in hand ready to decimate his whole troop if he dared to touch her. maybe she would even make him bald for his petulence
takayoshi blinked in astonishment
"you wrote to me, mizu" he said reaching back to get the scroll, his familiar stutter making her feel nostalgic, but not less mad. "you asked me to take you back and bring gold to you and your husband."
and mizu suddenly understands, as mikio materializes by her side, looking unaffected by the number of armed soldiers on his property. she was made into a fool. when mikio looked bewildered she would trade a life of luxuries for revenge, he was in fact envious of her position.
the man mizu loved was a fucking bastard.
he was also the one who first met her blade, to the shock of everyone watching her, a bride covered in the blood of her own husband. she looks at the closest soldier next, looking ready to attack, but takayoshi was faster:
"do not raise your blades at her!" he yelled out his authority, the trembling of his voice diminishing with the loudness. "mizu, let's go home... I'll intercede with my mother on your behalf. we can forget this ever happened."
"takayoshi, in respect of our friendship and the only familial bonds I ever respected," mizu said finally raising her eyes at him, blue meeting brown, the color of the sea and the summer sky who meant a childhood of laughs and promises. "forget I ever existed. this is not your battle to fight. I was never a real part of the itoh family and you know it well. leave me alone and spare me the sin of spilling your blood."
and takayoshi understands, unfortunately, that this was never about both of them being different. mizu was always the one who was hurt the most by her origins and he could never truly know what she went through. he was still the second son of a powerful house and no stuttering or insecurity could take that away from him.
at times, to love someone also meant to let them go. mizu had chosen a path in which he was nothing more than a nuisance. the least he could do was let her be.
he makes his men retreat, but not after putting down the treasure of gold and jewelries he had brought because of the message. he didn't know if she would use any of it, but he wouldn't, either.
"the winter palace will be open." he says before stepping into the carriage. "if not as a cousin, a brother or a friend, perhaps you can still reach me out as an acquaintance. I would enjoy having tea with you once again."
she didn't offer him another word of farewell as his caravan disappeared in the hills and she was bathed by the rain, too mentally exhausted by a reaction. no husband or family, she was fated to be a lonely monster, in the end.
only revenge could keep her satisfied.
