lets talk about military rank + hal jordan
spawned by my inability to let sleeping dogs lie, and in response to the ask @wajjs got, with them egging me on, i think it's time to explain military ranks and how they apply to the various iterations of hal jordan.
first things first, each branch has their own way of breaking down ranks. a captain in the air force ≠ a captain in the navy. more on that later. the second thing you need to know is that an officer (designations O-1 to O-10) outranks enlisted personnel (E-1 to E-9). A person can move from enlisted to officer ranks, but it requires a lot of time in service or generally speaking, a college degree. the third thing that you must know is that all pilots are officers. this means that they have some sort of college degree (a 4-year bachelor’s), from a normal university, or a service academy, and they have gone through OTS as well as flight school.
hal jordan usually appears to be assigned the rank of lieutenant:
Tumblr media
(as seen in superman: space age.)
OR, and i believe this is the last time his rank was addressed in the main continuity, they say that he is a captain in the air force:
Tumblr media
(this is from a Geoff Johns run, GL Vol. 4).
now, in the air force, there are two ranks of lieutenant, and they are the lowest of the officer ranks. those would be the second lieutenant (O-1) and first lieutenant (O-2), and you are commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation from OTS—Officer Training School, which can also be referred to as OCS (Officer Candidate School). the shortest amount of time that anyone can spend as a second lieutenant before a promotion is 18 months. then, they are required to spend two years as a first lieutenant (O-2). the next promotion in the air force is to O-3, captain. for the next few promotions, from O-3 to O-5, it's a minimum of three years in each rank. so that’s three years as a captain, three years as a major (O-4), and three years as a lieutenant colonel (O-5). the final rank I am going to talk about here is a colonel, O-6, and that’s because colonel is the highest rank that one can hold in the air force and still actively fly as a pilot. there is only a one-year minimum of service prior to promotion beyond colonel, which means at that point, the service member has at least 12.5 years in. factor in four years for college/the academy, and they would be 34-35, assuming they started at the age of 18.
why did i just spend all this time explaining that? well, what we know of hal’s rank can be used to get a better estimate as to what his age is supposed to be in canon.
as far as the alternate universe of superman: space age, i believe it's reasonable to figure that hal would be between 23 and 25 years old. we don’t have any specification as to what rank of lieutenant he would be, but if you figure he graduated with a degree around the age of 22 and then factor in time for flight school, I would say 23 is the minimum. and if he hadn’t been promoted to first lieutenant yet, he would have been well on his way.
then, with main continuity, it gets a bit harder, because there are less markers for the real passage of time, and they don’t say how many years have passed since hal’s discharge. however, the same reasoning applies, and hal would have been between 25 and 28 years old when he was discharged from the military. i don’t know if i would say it has been fifteen years since hal popped his commanding officer in the jaw, because the reality of the military letting someone in their 40′s back in just doesn’t fit much with the culture that i know. but, DC doesn’t always do their research on the reality of some subjects, i know, because im still mad about the whole dishonorable discharge concept. but that’s a story for another day.
the last thing that i want to do is double back to what i said about ranking in the different branches. this is largely because i know everyone likes to say that hal loves top gun and sometimes i think it would make more sense for him to be a naval aviator than an air force pilot. as I mentioned, a captain in the air force is an O-3. well, captain in the navy is an O-6 designation, so a naval captain is equal rank with an air force colonel. in the navy, O-1 is an ensign (ENS), O-2 is a lieutenant junior grade (LTJG—sometimes people just say lieutenant JG), O-3 is a lieutenant (LT), O-4 is a lieutenant commander (LCDR), and O-5 is a commander (CDR). another key difference is that the air force has generals, while the navy has admirals.
i’m not going to go into detail on how the air force handles educating its pilots, or the road to becoming one, but i did find a good article explaining the steps here.
if you have any questions or more references to hal’s career, I would be happy to talk about them, just head over to my ask box.

I had a headcanon that Hal Jordan was,out of spite, a scholarship student before he dropped college to enlist in the Air Force. This was because he really wanted to mislead his family and get them out of his hair. He started plotting his whole scheme a year before he finished high school.
First he gradually stoped talking about becoming a pilot and started studying more, doing all the extra classes he could and raising his grades until he gained his scholarship.
Starting college he became a member of the rugby club so he could train without raising any suspicions, and would take advanced science classes always maintaining high grades.
He even researched for different universities for the sake of his cover. All of this so nobody would suspect that the very day of his eighteen birthday he would be in front of the doors of the Air Force before the sun started to raise into the sky

YJ Livejournal Fic Rec Part1
I’ve become tired of losing stories I like on the Young Justice Livejournal so I’m going to make a list of them here. There’s a lot... Most will be under a read more. IF LINKS DON’T WORK PLEASE TELL ME!
This has 21 fics, I’ll probably make a few more of these fic rec things.
1. The Checklist: Wally has a HUGE crush on John Stewart-- posters on his wall, t-shirts, always trying to catch a glimpse of him whenever they're with the league, etc. I'm not too sure how old John was when he was given his ring, but I'd guess that, since Wally's 15 in YJ and John is already part of the league, he's in his early twenties? And maybe one day GL has to take Wally home after a mission or something, and Wally's all, "Ohmygod OHMYGOD what do I say to him" and the like. (Complete)
2.  Greetings from the Twineball (Wish You Were Here): Doing stuff together at super speed. Running to Paris for lunch and racing each other to the south pole to play with penguins, for example. I want lots of silly brotimes between the two, because Kon needs to have some fun.(Complete)
3. The Batsitter Begins:  all the batsiblings have a crush on wally, and they try to woo him in different ways. BONUS: they're all younger than dick BONUS2: they try to court him the bat way so it's extremely subtle, and after a while they get impatient and one of them just kisses him. (WIP, though you can kinda look at it as if it’s complete)
4.  Just Affectionate:  Wally's parents aren't abusive, just... neglectful, mainly in an emotional way. Distant. Fortunately, Wally has his aunt and uncle, and the Garricks, for hugs and smiles and emotional support and caring about that 'A' he got on his chemistry test. Small things. None of them realize that he's not getting any of these at home. They think he's just really social. Then, Barry and Iris are both gone at the same time, for whatever reason. (Mission, reporting, etc.) So are the Garricks, if you choose to include them. This absence lasts for an extended period of time, to the point where it starts to affect Wally. So he compensates when visiting Mount Justice. At first it's just extra hugs for teammates, which are nice, if a bit confusing. As time goes on, though, it extends to other things. Talking about his day, getting moody when there isn't anyone around, spending more time at Mount Justice than usual, taking negative feedback as more of a blow. This includes mentors, not just teammates. (Complete!)
5.  Five Times Wally Couldn't Drive and One Time He Could:  Wally, learning how to drive and being horrible at it. So Barry calls in Robin, because Robin is BAMF and can relate to Wally. And I'd love it if you included this little tidbit, because I kind of fell in love with it but am too lazy to write the rest. "You have a license?" Wally asks, his eyebrows horribly skeptical. Robin snorts. "Yes." Wally's eyebrow hitches higher, and the corner of Robin's mouth twitches as he tries not to smile. "In Russia." (Complete)
6.  On my honor, I will do my best: Superboy hears people refer to Superman as a boyscout. So, to try to be more like Superman, he joins the boyscouts. (Complete)
7. Play It By Trust: Despite how brief his stint as Dr. Fate was, Wally can still hear Nabu when he’s near enough to the Helmet of Fate (how near is up to you anon.) Surprisingly, Nabu is kind of a bitchy roommate. (Complete)
8. Kidnapping is Bad:  Wally is the only one that knows Robin's secret identity on team right? So I figure they probably hang out on the weekends in Gotham or Central or some place when they aren't doing missions or dynamic duoing. And seeing as how Dick Grayson has to be the receiving end of a multitude of kidnappings but this time I would like a time when kidnappers are forced to take Wally too because there can't be witnesses! (Complete)
9. Wally VS Wednesday:  So say Wally's dating someone older, whether it's Kaldur or Roy or someone from the League, and at some point when he hasn't been having a good day, his boyfriend comes to see him after school ends, right at the gate. Cue hug, or a careless kiss, and by the next day, everyone's talking. (Complete with a few bonus chapters)
10. Baby’s First Book:  Superboy is brand new in the world and he has a lot of firsts. Someone gets him a baby's first book were you put down all of the first things a baby does(first word, first laugh, first spit bubble). It can be a joke, something serious, maybe M'gann just trying to follow earth culture. Even though it's kind of silly the whole team helps to fill it up. So what would be the kind of things the team would want to remember?(Complete)
11. Wally.. Why do you Have Two Hearts?:  There is something about the Young Justice team. A secret hidden so deep that only one of them is privy to the knowledge. There aren't two aliens on the team. There are three. (and Timelords are very good at running.) (WIP, But can be looked as Completed)
12. ‘Cause They’re Part of the Six Teens: The mentors have to face a horrible, horrible realization. Even though their former-sidekicks are still nominally their partners... in reality, the members of YJ are Batman's. How they come to this conclusion is up to you, but I would love to see Batman stepping up for any non-Robin member of YJ. Crack/angst/slash/gen/whatever is perfectly fine.
Bonus: "Batman is the happiest I've ever seen him. Six teenagers and they're all his." (Completed)
13. Speedster Chase Instinct: Speedsters have an innate need to chase/race really fast things. Wally keeps his under control by playing tag/racing Barry every couple of days (and vice versa), but what happens if Flash can't be there for some reason? Bonus points if he suddenly goes running after the Javelin /Batmobile (Completed)
14. Everyone Needs a Little More Dick:  A certain Dick Grayson is put into the custody of a certain Agent Gibbs and his staff. He gets to meet the whole team and trolls the shit out of Tony though no one believes the poor guy when he tries to tell the others about it. Dick's got those innocent-who-me? baby blues that NO ONE can resist. Bonus if this when he's older and can still pull off the kicked puppy look. Super bonus if Superboy gets involved somehow, though just him. EPIC SUPER BONUS if you have Dick and Gibbs bonding in their red head kink. (Completed)
15. Hal Jordan or Uncle McAwesome:  Five times Hal Jordan was there for Wally as an uncle/mentor and the one time Wally was there for Hal. (Completed)
16. Batty’s Little Babies: 5 Times Batman thought of the members of Young Justice as his children.(Completed)
17. Mission: Seduce Sexy Snarky Damian: Wally is thrilled when Robin tells him his secret ID! After doing so, Robin takes him to Wayne Manor to introduce him to his brothers: Damian, Tim, and Jason. What Wally wasn't expecting was the feeling that came over him as he laid eye on the gorgeous Damian Wayne. Cue Wally beginning phase one of Mission: Seduce Sexy Snarky Damian! Romance ensues! Damian/Wally Note: The ages are reversed. Meaning, Damian is the oldest (precisely what age is up to author anon), Tim's second oldest, Jason is second youngest, and Dick is the youngest. Bonus: Insert humor as Wally tries pick up lines, over the top flirting techniques, and failed attempts to be seductive, etc. (Completed, it’s a minfill)
18. Fill(It’s just called that no other name): Cadmus cloning project always ended in failure - clone degeneration, imperfect powers, starts to have mind of its own and goes against them, etc. They can't make a perfect weapon that can kill/replace Superman. So tried a different approach this time. Instead of developing one weapon, they're going to make a set of different weapons - each focusing on different powers that could go toe on toe with Superman. And so Cadmus had their perfect set of weapons. Separated, they can handle a fight of their own. They have been trained thoroughly and their powers have been honed to perfection - the clone is now stronger, the speedster now rivals the Flash with his speed, and the alien could now use all her power with great expertise. (WIP; it’s amazing though!)
19. Filling the Empty Rooms: Since Roy has shown a love for masks only rivaled by every memeber in the batfamily, I would like to request AU where Roy is adopted by Bruce. Could it also include Roy, Rob and KF hanging out in the Batcave? (Completed)
20. Kid Lantern: Wally loses his powers (reason up to anon) and starts feeling down about being depowered. Though he knows that powers don't make the hero, he still feels that he needs them help. Cue Uncle Hal lending Wally Green Lantern powers until he regains his speed (which he does, eventually). And Wally, being the ever lovable teenager that he is, has some 'fun' with those powers. Perhaps he trolls people or maybe the powers allow him to save his friends from a really powerful villain. (Complete; Minifill)
21. The Hazard of Accidental Dimension Travel: Wally doesn't disappear. He travels dimensions. The JLU one to be exact. And he manages there for quite some time, getting himself an identity, a job, and even becomes a founder of the Justice League in that dimension. (Completed)

What kind of discharge would be a realistic one for Hal, do you think?
so, knowing what we know at this point in time, that Hal ends up back in the military in canon (at least for a while), i believe that it has to be a General Discharge.
there are five types of discharge from the military, and we’re gonna go through them as best as i can:
1) Honorable Discharge — this is what most military members end up with, and comes with all the benefits of being a veteran. (access to the VA, continued military medical and dental care, disability benefits, the GI Bill.) it essentially means they finished their tour of duty, and they had good/respectable conduct. of course there are situations where a service member receives an honorable discharge without finishing their tour, they have become a parent or don’t have a viable family care plan.
2) General, Under Honorable Conditions (aka General Discharge) — this means that the service member was satisfactory, but involved in situations where their performance or conduct could not warrant an honorable discharge. i know, the “under honorable conditions” is confusing, but so is the military in general lol. those that receive a general discharge usually have had minor misconduct or nonjudicial punishments in their record. if you have a general discharge, you still have access to VA benefits such as medical, and burial in a national cemetery, but you don’t get the education benefits such as the GI bill. there is still a stigma attached to having this kind of discharge, and it can affect their ability to find work or attend schools.
3) Under Other than Honorable Conditions — this is the last form of administrative discharge, meaning without a court martial. this one is reserved for those with patterns of behavior that is a major departure from the expected conduct. we’re talking like security violations, violent behavior, illegal drug use, civilian court convictions, but also being found guilty of adultery in divorce proceedings or abusing power as a superior. most veteran benefits are unavailable, and generally speaking, they cannot reenlist in any other component of the armed forces.
the final two forms of discharge can only be given after a court-martial finds the service member guilty of certain offenses. they can also only be handed down to enlisted individuals. one thing you should know: court-martial convictions often equal time in a military prison.
4) Bad Conduct Discharge — virtually all veteran benefits are forfeited on a bad conduct charge, and as i mentioned, time in a military prison. potential offenses that can result in this form of discharge include being drunk on duty, a dui, adultery, and arrest for disorderly conduct. this discharge isn’t complete until the service member finishes their incarceration period, and it must be disclosed when you’re applying for a job.
5) Dishonorable Discharge — the absolute worst form of discharge, also often includes a stint in military prison. consequences include loss of VA benefits, loss of civilian rights (such as the right to bear arms), disqualification from federal employment, and the service member may not qualify for civilian benefits such as unemployment or federal student loans. if someone has a dishonorable discharge, odds are they have: committed murder, fraud, treason, sexual assault, participated in espionage, or deserted the military.
commissioned officers cannot receive a Bad Conduct or Dishonorable Discharge by a court-martial, and they can’t be reduced in rank. instead, if they are found guilty by a general court-martial, they can be handed down a Dismissal. a Dismissal is the functional equivalent of a Dishonorable Discharge.
additionally, military separations are a different beast altogether, and have their own broad variety of reasons. it should be noted that a medical separation or medical discharge belongs in this category, and usually someone with a medical discharge is entitled to VA benefits as well as disability benefits (this is dependent on if it is a service related disability).
of course, everything is subjective, and the examples i gave are simply examples that i can find referenced across the internet. i’m inclined to think that the way they bring hal back into the military fold has to insinuate a general discharge, although it could also be under other than honorable conditions. i lean towards more general discharge because they do insinuate a bit of leniency with hal because of who his father was back in the day, and an OTH discharge would require a review for hal to be allowed to rejoin the air force, and they can’t reasonably have all of the brass know that hal jordan is the green lantern. in my opinion, that could cause way too many potential problems.
i’m also attaching the resources i used below. there is some variability in what’s published on the internet, but i stuck with the details that were most consistent for simplicity’s sake, and that made the most sense based on my own understanding of the subject. there are always gray areas when it comes to the military, and specific circumstances will change how they react to a situation. if anyone has anymore questions, please feel free to send me an ask and i’ll do my best to explain.

Hi I've been reading through your blog and saw your post on turning Parallax possession similar to a virus. I'm very interested in this as I'm not very knowledgeable about viruses. Could you explain it a bit more in detail on how it would work?
so, immunologically speaking, your body protects you from foreign proteins, bacteria, and viruses based on what it recognizes. if the body can recognize an antigen as having been there before, it responds and fights it off much quicker, because it's using a secondary immune response.
A primary immune response takes at least a week to develop, because first the body has to recognize the antigen as bad, and then develop a response for it (antibodies.) In that time span, the antigens overwhelm the immune system, and that's when you get sick, or a cut gets infected. once your body starts producing antibodies to beat up that foreign bacteria/virus, you start to recover, and then your body will store the knowledge of what that antigen is made of, so that if it ever comes back, it can respond quicker.
Tumblr media
(you can see here, primary immune responses are much slower than secondary because they don't recognize the antigen right away.)
This is why we have vaccines, we introduce a dead or weakened antigen into the body, our immune system learns it & learns how to beat it, and so we're less likely to get sick (or less likely to be *severely* sick) when we're introduced to the antigen in full force, say... in the height of flu season.
Thinking of Parallax as a virus requires the mindset that Hal hasn't experienced fear since he was a child. He doesn't have anything to lose because in his mind, the worst thing that could happen already did, when he watched his father die. So, it's like Hal's skipped his flu shot for like 15 years. Eventually, the flu virus (or in comics' case, Parallax) will change enough that the body doesn't recognize it right away, and you get sick.
In this, weakness would be exploited by Hal experiencing the grief and fear of having Barry die, and then the destruction of Coast City.
Tumblr media
(side note, if anyone remembers where this panel comes from, lmk because I don't remember the exact issue and I would like to know.)
The implication is then that the virus overwhelmed Hal's body, and entered his CSF(cerebrospinal fluid)/went to his brain and caused encephalitis—massive brain inflammation. The symptoms of encephalitis vary, but can include seizures, headaches, light/sound sensitivity, loss of consciousness, and depending on the localization of the swelling, personality and emotional or psychological changes.
So: thinking of Parallax as a virus means thinking that Hal got an infection to the extreme of it going into his central nervous system, and affecting his brain. This means it could potentially (and in this case, did) alter his personality and emotional state to that of what we see when he is Parallax, where he kills his friends and fellow corpsmen, and occasionally acts as though he's helpless to stop himself from completing the tasks he has set out for himself—claiming all of the Green Lantern energy and returning the universe to what he believes is its best possible state.
The hard part of this is that DC created the retcon and used it as a scape goat without any real research/scientific background, and then never continued their explanation. There should have been real physical and mental consequences to Hal having an "infection" for as long as he did, and i think they could have further addressed his feelings of guilt and better explained how this meant anyone could potentially be infected by Parallax.
I really hope this made sense, but hit me with some follow up if you have more questions.

FUCK I FORGOT TO ANSWER THIS YESTERDAY.
uhhhhh. mashed potatoes are gross. hal’s middle name is trauma. there are two versions of how to treat his character. 100% of DC Writers don’t understand how fucked you are if you get dishonorably discharged. there’s so much about being military/being raised military that no one talks about, and it’s because of how fucked up it can make you feel.
Hal and Barry’s relationship reads like a really early life attachment and i love that for them.

new theory that iris was so tired after giving birth to the tornado twins that she legit thought she was seeing double and the nurses/hospital people were part of an episode of Punk’d when they asked her for the baby’s name a second time. could this have been avoided if Barry hadn’t died? maybe, maybe not. Barry loves her too much to call her on her bullshit

this panel right here… the angst factor could be dialed up to like 15 if right before he died, Hal said thank you.
Because Ollie’s right, the real Hal wouldn’t be able to live with himself after killing Barry, and it would go well with the notion that the real Hal was trapped inside, to some extent—since i think my understanding is that the vampire king kind of had control of all the vampires? and it’s just…if that’s the only part you care about, that’s one HELL of a way to end that plot line.

tbh i’m not sure if this is about “hal jordan is my emotional support green lantern,” “he was a skater boi is tim drake’s theme song” or “its fucking obi wan kenobi,” or one of my many others but thanks bc these are the phrases that are permanently attached to these characters in my brain, and it will likely never end. cheers lol

new things are happening in DC Comics with them allowing characters to now be queer, which means that it’s my job to remind everyone that Hal was established to be genderfluid in the Spectre comics of 2001.
Tumblr media
this was, i believe, the beginning of establishing multiple identities, or “others” as the comic calls them. this is the cover for issue #11, above.

the Stranger breaks it to hal that there are other forms, other aspects of him throughout the known universe, unconsciously sent off to do the Spectre’s bidding.

here is the first true visual representation (aka not the cover of the issue) of a feminine Hal, doing the Spectre’s bidding and trying to redeem those in Arkham, and yes, that is Poison Ivy. so I guess you could say that a feminine version of Hal was sent to match.

and finally here is hal’s first acknowledgement and shown moment of appreciation for his other selves, and a famous snapshot of Helen appreciating all of Hal’s forms.
all of this can be found in issue # 11, if my screenshots didn’t go out of order, of The Spectre (2001). I’m going to go into more detail on Hal and his acceptance of his different forms, but that’s a lot of screenshots for one single post.

Hal Jordan is genderqueer I heard you are the resident Hal Jordan expert what issue/series was this in?
is this one of my friends just trying to make me earn a bingo square?
anyway, yeah. you’re looking for the Spectre volume 4, years 2001-2003. they even call them “auntie Hal” for a bit. it’s a thing.
previous posts i’ve made about this are here, here, and here. you can also search genderfluid hal jordan on tumblr and probably find a ton of other stuff from people ranting about this, but these are just important ones that come up when i search spectre hal on my blog.
