Xayah's Worst Skin: Sweetheart Xayah looks like an NPC in a skin line of main characters

As we discussed in the last video, Xayah's skins often suffer from a reliance on Rakan to be her complementary contrast, and so, on their own, they're less interesting than they would be.

Sweetheart Xayah has the opposite problem. On her own, she's, like, fine I guess, but side by side with Sweetheart Rakan, she starts having problems. All the Valentine's skins are love themed, and Xayah represents specifically the sweet pain of unrequited love, when your soulmate is someone who doesn't love you back. In this way she's the counterpart of Rakan, who is the eternal suitor, always wooing and courting his special someone.

So Rakan is all pastel, pink and white, a puffy lovestruck Prince Charming. And so obviously Xayah, his contrast is... is a... lady in... a fairly normal dress. With a cape.

Xayah is meant to represent a darker side of love, the painful part of it, but she doesn't meaningfully contrast Rakan and on her own she just looks so... plain. She needed to be darker, she needed to look sweet but a little cruel. She needed to look like the dark side of love. This is a high concept skin-line and she just looks like a background NPC.

Back when Sweetheart Xayah and Rakan was released the community responded with criticism and fan edits/redesigns because of its poor quality....and here I am contributing to that.

That's right 5 years later after this skin was released and with it being nowhere near Valentine's Day I took it upon myself to make my own HeartAche Xayah!

For holiday skins, heartseekers had a shallow thematic with "pink, gold, and hearts" being the core elements. (There is potential for improvement by giving a more directed and dramatic direction).

Xayah and Rakan made perfect champions to a valentines skin line with their romance being their main gimmick. Literal love birds.

As a concept, Rakan is actually great (not the skin itself). He's a love-struck prince charming suitor in pastel and personally, I think there are already plenty of wonderful fan redesigns that perfect that concept.

For Xayah I felt she looked plain next to Rakan, as his contrast Xayah had many avenues to explore rather than being his basic goth princess background npc.

She needed a makeover. One that made her represent the Dark and painful side of love...

I replaced her wing with a tattered red cape associated with a red hiding hood adding to the "fantasy" but gave it a high pointy collar similar to that of the evil queen and vampires. (I was torn between giving her default hood back and this)

The black swan (swan lake) also heavily inspired Xayah's look with a ballet leotard and ribbons paired with a feather top and asymmetrical half tutu.

And of course, I gave her running mascara.

Overall Xayah turned out a lot darker than the status quota of sweetheart but I think all of the valentines skins should explore the different shades of love.

I dislike sweetheart Xayah’s look. I feel like with the dark side of love there’s so many things you can do that isn’t just having a weird princess themed outfit to match Rakan. So on Valentine’s Day me and chat went in with two designs and it was a lot of fun.

I’ve had this idea for a while but I thought it would be perfect for the love day itself. The wedding dress idea came in late in development but I’m really proud of it. The arrows through her are my favorite details

📱- This post will be a disaster because mobile but. Thinking about how… rito seems scared to do anything serious and edgy with Xayah and Rakan sometimes. At least when it comes to new verses. Broken covenant is close with Rakan, giving him a bit of a twist… but it’s kind of yet another skinline that Xayah is semi shafted.

And I’m saying this as someone who actually enjoys most of Xayah’s skins… but it feels like the stories crafted for them are so… surface level and vanilla these days.

Corrupted SG is the best skin not just because of the looks but it felt like the best reflection of the two.

Mainverse Xayah is not fully a hero. She is willing to let innocents die for her cause, she’s bitter and hateful. Rakan follows her while also keeping her in line but will do what he needs to her for her. Which corrupted SG reflects. Every other skin so far has like. Half heartedly attempted to make Xayah a neutral character where she’s neither the hero nor the villain, but idk it feel like they diminish what makes her exciting and mellow her out at the same time. She and Rakan are stripped of sounding dangerous and cool and left just being the forbidden love story… arcana, cosmic, broken covenant (didn’t start out forbidden I guess but lol), elderwood… even sg in a way because they were on opposing sides for most of the time lol.

Like. They can have this love story but we can make it something different, rito. And spice them up, give them their threat, their dynamic of Xayah being callous and kind of an anti-hero and Rakan a powerful not-just-the-boyfriend-who-needs-to-be-saved.

I have a lot of interest in broken covenant partially because I want to take the basics and make them way more intriguing because right now Xayah is once again just there to save Rakan lol.

And like another thought (I’m spaghetti braining right now don’t at me), they’re gunna be nerfed so fucking hard if they’re used anymore in SG just because they’re not corrupted anymore I bet. Like the two of them held off two teams of guardians alone and together while evil and they’ve learned to use their dark powers so theoretically they should now be some of the strongest of the guardians

But you know… you just know they’re gunna just be there and undermined/ignored/weakened because “lol they’re no longer needed to be the big baddies”

Outside of sweetheart, I don’t hate the skins really but. I feel like rito just throws them in half the time rather than really representing their characters and then they wonder why lol people think they’re annoying and nothing more - all this potential and they’re reduced to just their relationship 80% of the time in any skin not main. Their relationship is SUPER important but the dynamic and the balance is lacking a lot.

Hey. I just started following you a Rebelquilled and O-M-G! I have so much fun reading what you both write about SG Xayah and Rakan. They are precious babies that must be protected. I love your portrayals of them, your headcanons and thoughts about them. It's really nice to find people that care about the Star Guardians lore as much as I do. You wrote a long reply the past few days that sent me chills as I read it. I love Rakan and your portrayal of him is SPOT ON! Good job! <3

But I’m so glad you like how I portray Rakan!! He’s honestly such a fun character to portray, and I’m so glad I stumbled upon him by chance a few years back. I absolutely LOVE confident muses with a big ego who ALSO happen to be total sweethearts at their core. I always lean towards those types, and Rakan fit the bill perfectly!!!
