State Visit to Mexico
Their Majesties The King and Queen will pay a State Visit to Mexico on 12–14 March 2024 at the invitation of His Excellency President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The Swedish Government will be represented by Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell. More than 25 Swedish companies will take part in the business delegation arranged by Business Sweden.
The aim of the State Visit is to consolidate the good relations between Sweden and Mexico and strengthen economic and political ties, focusing on innovation, partnership, trade and investment.
Mexico is Latin America’s second-largest market and the world’s fifteenth-largest economy. Many Swedish businesses have been operating in Mexico for decades, and with its young population and dynamic economy, there are good opportunities to deepen and broaden trade. Mexico is a prominent multilateral actor with which Sweden enjoys close cooperation. The State Visit will provide an opportunity to develop this cooperation.
Previous State Visits to Mexico took place in 1982 and 2002.
The three-day programme of the State Visit will take place in Mexico City and Mérida, in the state of Yucatán.
The programme in brief
The first day of the State Visit will begin with a wreath-laying and official welcome ceremony, at which Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his wife Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller will welcome The King and Queen to the National Palace. This will be followed by a bilateral meeting with the President and his wife. The King and Queen will also visit the Mexican Senate. The day will conclude with a dinner hosted by The King and Queen.
Business issues and children’s rights will be the focus of the second day. In the morning, The King will open the Mexico-Sweden Business Forum, where discussion topics will include sustainable transport solutions, sustainable mining, the telecommunications industry and health. The King and Queen will then visit SOS Children’s Villages and the large public National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). After a lunch with business sector representatives, The King will inaugurate Ericsson’s new offices in Mexico City. The King and Queen will then meet with Swedes residing in the country. The day will conclude with a performance of traditional Mexican dances at the Palace of Fine Arts.
The third day will continue in the city of Mérida. The King and Queen will travel on the recently launched Tren Maya train to the pre-Columbian ruined city of Uxmal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where they will meet representatives of the Maya and Yaqui indigenous peoples. Later in the day, the King and Queen will meet with the Governor of Yucatán.
The State Visit will conclude the following day, when the King and Queen leave Mexico.
Mr Forssell will take part in the programme and will also have bilateral meetings with representatives of the Mexican Government.
A more detailed programme will be published closer to the date of the Visit.

Tiara predictions
State Visit from Sweden to Mexico
Tumblr media Tumblr media
King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia are currently in Mexico for the State Visit. They will be going to Mexico City and Mérida and will focus on Swedish-Mexican diplomacy, business, children, the arts and indigenous people.
The tiara I want Silvia to wear: Edward VII Ruby Tiara - this tiara is usually only worn on overseas visits so it’d be lovely if Silvia chooses this one.
My Prediction: Nine Prong Tiara - does this tiara look like antlers? Yes. However, Paolo puts it best…

facts about josefina, kirsten, addy, kit and julie! :D
(from their new pages!)
✿ To learn more about what Josefina’s life would have been like, author Valerie Tripp spent two summers in New Mexico. She visited living history museums and interviewed elderly New Mexican women about the daily lives of Hispanic families and children in rural New Mexico.
The models for Josefina’s home were la El Rancho de las Golondrinas near Santa Fe and Hacienda de los Martinez near Taos, NM. Both are former ranchos from Josefina’s time and now living history museums that you can visit today.
Josefina’s first and last names are drawn from the New Mexican censuses of 1790 and 1823.
American Girl worked closely with the advisory board to decide what Josefina would look like. Board member Felipe Mirabal even cut off a lock of his own hair and sent it to AG to ensure that the Josefina doll’s hair color was just right!
Although Josefina is actually a Mexican citizen, the advisory board felt comfortable calling her an “American girl” because her story presents a history and heritage that’s an integral part of America today.
By the end of her series, Josefina has a new mother. This plot element symbolizes the change for the Spanish settlers of New Mexico and the Southwest, who lost their mother country of Mexico when they became citizens of the United States, their new mother country. ✿
✿ Kirsten was one of the first three characters in The American Girls Collection, along with Samantha and Molly, when Pleasant Company debuted.
The Kirsten doll and accessories were “archived” in 2010 and have only been rereleased once in 2021 and once in 2024 since then.
One of the outfits that was sold for Kirsten was a housecoat and sockor, or wool slippers. The sockor for the Kirsten doll were handmade by a woman in Sweden beginning in 1987 for twenty years.
The original family portrait in Kirsten’s books is made to look like a daguerreotype, which is a type of photograph from the time. Later, the portraits of Kirsten’s family and friends were done individually to match the other American Girl books.
In Pleasant Rowland’s original business plan, Kirsten was named Rebecca, and was a Norwegian immigrant in 1865.
The team who created Kirsten did a lot of research with the Minnesota and Wisconsin Historical Societies, who had a lot of information about the Swedish settlers who came to these states in the 1800s.
Kirsten’s Swedish dirndl and kerchief outfit were first released in 1989. ✿
✿ Addy was the first American Girl doll that came with pierced ears.
The cowrie shell necklace that Addy wears is special, as the cowrie has ritual significance for some West African cultures.
The Addy doll and books debuted in September 1993. She was the fifth historical character and the first Black character.
Pleasant Rowland, the founder of American Girl, reached out to author Connie Porter to write the Addy book series after reading her adult novel All-Bright Court.
To promote the Addy book series, American Girl took author Connie Porter on a 10-city author tour to bookstores, libraries, and schools, reaching an audience of more than 15,000 people.
Researchers on Addy confirmed when the full moon would have been during Addy and her mother’s escape from enslavement in 1864 to ensure historical accuracy in the timing.
The museum program, Addy at Ohio Village, debuted in 1998.
The dialect used in the Addy books was created by author Connie Porter to be a balance between what speech of the time would’ve sounded like and what is accessible for young readers and was reviewed by two dialect experts at Jacksonville State University in Alabama.
Addy was the first American Girl character to have an advisory board. Addy’s advisory board was made up of Black historians, educators, and museum curators who ensured the depiction of Addy’s life and times was historically accurate.
The advisory board for Addy included: Lonnie Bunch, Cheryl Chisholm, Spencer Crew, Violet Harris, Wilma King, June Powell, and Janet Sims-Wood.
Addy’s first three books sold more than a million copies in the year they were released.
Some of the original time periods discussed for American Girl’s first Black character included the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights era, which were used later for Claudie Wells and Melody Ellison, respectively. ✿
✿ Kit Kittredge is the seventh historical character that American Girl created.
When she wrote the Kit books, author Valerie Tripp was inspired by her mother, who was Kit’s age in 1932.
The movie Kit Kittredge: An American Girl was released in 2008 and starred Abigail Breslin as Kit—plus actors Chris O’Donnell, Julia Ormond, Joan Cusack, and Stanley Tucci.
Illustrator Walter Rane used himself as a model for the grumpy grocery store owner in Kit’s stories.
When Kit launched, American Girl held events called Kit’s Share and Care Party where girls were invited to donate canned goods for a food drive.
Like Kit’s dad, author Valerie Tripp’s grandfather paid his staff out of his own pocket as long as he could, but eventually had to close his hotel during the Great Depression.
Kit was the first American Girl character doll with freckles and the first with short hair.
Development on Kit was started before Mattel purchased Pleasant Company (American Girl’s original company name) but she was launched after the purchase.
After the launch of the Kit doll and books, Valerie Tripp received a letter from a woman named Kit Kittredge who had grown up in Cincinnati during the Depression and was very excited about the coincidence!
American Girl’s Claudie Wells, whose stories are set in the 1920s, could have faced the challenges of the Great Depression in her teens and twenties. ✿
✿ When Julie launched, in 2007, American Girl historical characters’ years had always ended in 4, so Julie’s year was set as 1974—even though her stories begin in 1975.
Julie’s stories are set in San Francisco to express the open-minded, progressive spirit of her time. At the forefront of the hippie counterculture, San Francisco’s colorful, creative, free-wheeling vibe strongly influenced the music, fashion, and art of the 1970s.
When Julie debuted, some customers felt American Girl should not depict a girl with divorced parents. But since about 50% of kids today live with divorced parents, the creators of Julie felt it was important to have a character and doll who represented their experience.
Author Megan McDonald has four sisters who inspire many of her stories. Quite a few of the scenes between Julie and her teenage sister Tracy were inspired by Megan’s experience growing up with her sisters.
When she’s running for election to student body president, Julie debates her opponent, a popular sixth-grade boy. The 1976 Ford-Carter election debates inspired author Megan McDonald to come up with this plotline.
When author Megan McDonald was ten, her first published story appeared in her school newspaper. Her story was about a pencil sharpener! ✿

Solar storm hits Earth, producing colorful light shows across Northern Hemisphere (NYT) A dramatic blast from the sun set off the highest-level geomagnetic storm in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday that is expected to make the northern lights visible as far south as Florida and Southern California and could interfere with power grids, communications and navigations system. It is the strongest such storm to reach Earth since Halloween of 2003. That one was strong enough to create power outages in Sweden and damage transformers in South Africa. The effects could continue through the weekend as a steady stream of emissions from the sun continues to bombard the planet’s magnetic field.
US set to impose 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicle imports (Financial Times) The Biden administration plans to raise tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles imports from 25 per cent to 100 per cent, as it intensifies efforts ahead of the US election to protect American industry. The administration is expected to announce the move, and other tariffs on clean energy imports, on Tuesday, according to people familiar with the situation. The sharp rise in the levies comes amid mounting concern that China could flood the US market with cheap EVs, threatening the American car industry. President Joe Biden has taken several actions in recent months to convince union members in swing states that he will protect jobs.
America’s debt tops $34 trillion, but a commission to address it appears dead in Congress (AP) For Mike Johnson it was effectively a Day 1 priority. It’s well past time, the newly elected House speaker said in October, to establish a bipartisan commission to tackle the federal government’s growing $34.6 trillion in debt. “The consequences if we don’t act now are unbearable,” he said, echoing warnings from his predecessor and other House Republicans. More than six months later, the proposal appears all but dead, extinguished by vocal opposition from both the right and the left. The collapse underscores an unyielding dynamic in Washington, with lawmakers in both parties loath to consider the unpopular tradeoffs that would be necessary to stem the nation’s swelling tide of red ink—particularly in an election year. Facing the reality that any fiscal commission would almost certainly suggest that Americans pay more or get less from their government, lawmakers have time and again done what they do so well: punt the problem to the next Congress.
It’s not a matter of if a hurricane will hit Florida, but when, forecasters say (AP) With the start of hurricane season less than a month away, U.S. officials who predict, prepare for and respond to natural disasters had a message for Floridians on Friday: It’s not a matter of if a hurricane will hit, but when. The 2024 hurricane season is expected to be busier than average. To ensure that people everywhere are prepared, officials visited residents in Sanford, a landlocked city in the middle of the Sunshine State. Even if they don’t live on the coast, the officials told residents, they need to know the potential danger hurricanes pose to their property, such as flooding; and put together an emergency plan that includes a supply kit. “Everybody in Florida is at risk,” said Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center. As if to punctuate Florida’s vulnerability to damaging weather, wind gusts of 71 mph (114 kph), just shy of hurricane force, were recorded early Friday in Tallahassee, where mangled metal and other debris from damaged buildings littered parts of the state’s capital city.
Mexico heat wave melts temperature records in ten cities, including Mexico City (Reuters) Ten cities in Mexico registered record-high temperatures in 10 cities, including the capital, authorities said on Friday, amid a searing heat wave that has prompted blackouts nationwide and pushed the power grid to the brink. In the normally temperate high-altitude capital of Mexico City, North America’s largest metropolis, thermometers on Thursday peaked at 34.3 degrees Celsius (93.7 degrees Fahrenheit), a tenth of a degree higher than the record hit just a month earlier.
Panama’s next president says he’ll try to shut down one of the world’s busiest migration routes (AP) Panama is on the verge of a dramatic change to its immigration policy that could reverberate from the dense Darien jungle to the U.S. border. President-elect José Raúl Mulino says he will shut down a migration route used by more than 500,000 people last year. Until now, Panama has helped speedily bus the migrants across its territory so they can continue their journey north. Whether Mulino is able to reduce migration through a sparsely populated region with little government presence remains to be seen, experts say. The migrant route through the narrow isthmus grew exponentially in popularity in recent years with the help of organized crime in Colombia, making it an affordable, if dangerous, land route for hundreds of thousands.
Haitians demand the resignation and arrest of the country’s police chief after a new gang attack (AP) A growing number of civilians and police officers are demanding the dismissal and arrest of Haiti’s police chief as heavily armed gangs launched a new attack in the capital of Port-au-Prince, seizing control of yet another police station early Saturday. Armed men raided the coastal community of Gressier in the western tip of Port-au-Prince late Friday, injuring people, burning cars and attacking homes and other infrastructure as scores of people fled into the nearby mountains following a barrage of gunfire overnight. “The town is ours,” said one man who filmed himself with others who were armed, noting they were in Gressier. “We have no limits.” The attack comes roughly a week after gang attacks in central Port-au-Prince forced more than 3,700 people to flee their homes. “The situation is critical and catastrophic,” Garry Jean-Baptiste, a spokesman for the SPNH-17 police union, told The Associated Press.
Police arrest brother and lawyer of Peru’s president over alleged influence peddling (AP) Peruvian authorities arrested President Dina Boluarte’s brother and her lawyer Friday over influence-peddling accusations. A judge signed off on the arrests, according to a copy of the warrant obtained by The Associated Press. The document accuses the president’s sibling of working to appoint government officials in exchange for money and an agreement to gather signatures to register a political party. The developments mark the latest step in mounting pressure on Boluarte, who became president in December 2022 when she replaced then-president Pedro Castillo. He was dismissed by Parliament and is now imprisoned while being investigated for alleged corruption and rebellion.
German politicians are facing growing violence (Reuters) The black-clad attackers beat up Matthias Ecke so badly as he put up posters in Dresden that he needed surgery. In Nordhorn, a man threw eggs at a lawmaker then punched him in the face. In Berlin, a pensioner hit a senator on the head with a bag. Just three of the assaults that German politicians have suffered over the past week as campaigns get underway for European Parliament and district council elections. Tensions have always risen ahead of votes. But something has shifted, say parties and analysts. Assaults causing physical injury have surged—22 on politicians so far in 2024, compared with 27 for all of 2023, the Federal Criminal Police Office said this week. The atmosphere has also changed, coarsened by the all-out shouting matches stoked by social media and the divisions and rhetoric of populist politics. “We are observing an affective polarization. When dissenters become ‘enemies’,” said Stefan Marschall, a political scientist at the University of Duesseldorf.
Ukraine says Russia is trying to break through its defenses in the northeastern Kharkiv region (AP) Ukraine rushed reinforcements to its northeastern Kharkiv region on Friday to hold off a Russian attempt to breach local defenses, authorities said, signaling a tactical switch in the war by Moscow that Ukrainian officials had been expecting for weeks. Kharkiv’s regional governor, Oleh Syniehubov, said intense overnight shelling targeted Vovchansk, a city with a prewar population of about 20,000 that is less than 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the Russian border. The barrage, which used powerful guided aerial bombs, artillery, rockets, tanks and mortars, killed at least one civilian and wounded five others, prompting authorities to begin evacuating about 3,000 people. Then, around dawn, Russian infantry tried to penetrate Ukrainian defenses near Vovchansk, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said, adding that it had deployed reserve units to fend off the attack.
The costs of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan (Foreign Affairs) According to Bloomberg Economics, a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would cost the global economy around $10 trillion, the equivalent of nearly ten percent of global GDP—dwarfing the impacts of the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the global financial crisis of 2008–9. A Chinese blockade of Taiwan would result in less immediate destruction but would still cost the global economy around $5 trillion. The reason is simple: over 90 percent of advanced chips are produced in Taiwan, and approximately half of the global fleet of ships that carry shipping containers pass through the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan is an indispensable and irreplaceable part of the global supply chain, and defending it requires a global effort. But the value of Taiwanese security is not merely economic; it is also geostrategic. Preserving the status quo in the strait is vital to maintaining the U.S. alliance system, the regional balance of power, and nuclear nonproliferation. These three critical pillars have kept the Indo-Pacific region stable and prosperous for generations and would be threatened were China to gain control of Taiwan. Economic losses and supply chain disruptions could be mitigated over time. But a geostrategic shift to the advantage of China’s authoritarian expansionism would harm the world for decades to come.
Israel orders new evacuations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah as it prepares to expand operations (AP) Israel ordered new evacuations in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah on Saturday, forcing tens of thousands more people to move as it prepares to expand its operation and adding that it is also moving into an area in northern Gaza where Hamas has regrouped. Israel has now evacuated the eastern third of Rafah, pushing the operation to the edges of the heavily populated central area, although Israel’s move into the city has so far been short of the full-scale invasion that it planned. The order comes in the face of heavy international opposition and criticism. U.S. President Joe Biden has already said he will not provide offensive weapons to Israel for Rafah, and on Friday the U.S. said there was “reasonable” evidence that Israel had breached international law protecting civilians in the way it conducted its war against Hamas—the strongest statement that the Biden administration has yet made on the matter.
Jacob Zuma, Once Leader of the A.N.C., Becomes Its Political Rival (NYT) Jobless graduates, struggling business owners and army veterans marched through the eastern South African city of Pietermaritzburg this week, chanting the name “Jacob Zuma.” The 500 or so demonstrators brought to a standstill parts of the city, in KwaZulu-Natal Province—the traditional stronghold of Mr. Zuma, a past president of both South Africa and the African National Congress, the party that has governed the country for three decades. Demanding water and electricity, the protest over commonplace local concerns was also a show of power for the new political party that Mr. Zuma now leads—uMkhonto weSizwe, or M.K.—with the hope of eroding the dominant position of his former allies. Not present at the Pietermaritzburg march was Mr. Zuma himself. Instead, he was preparing for a hearing at South Africa’s Constitutional Court on Friday about whether Mr. Zuma, 82, is eligible to stand at all. He resigned from the top office in 2018 amid widespread protests, and three years later was convicted and sentenced for failing to appear at a corruption inquiry, though in the end he served only two months of a 15-month sentence.
