Autobianchi A112 Elegant, 1978, by Zagato. The coachuilder's proposal for a limited edition ungraded version of the Autobianchi supermini included 14-inch alloy wheels, rectangular headlamps, accent stripes and new seats with high-grade cloth and leather. Unveiled at the Turin Motor show, Zagato's prototype went no further though it predicted the development of luxurious small cars in the 80s and beyond

What a difference 52 years makes juxtaposition of Renault 5, 1972 & Renault 5 E-Tech, 2024. The original R5 was Renault's first "super-mini" and became the best-selling car in France from 1972 until 1986. Fiat 127, 1971. The 127 replaced the rear-engined 850 in Fiat's range and was the first "supermini" establishing the B-segment template that has been used ever since, front transverse engine with an end-on gearbox driving the front wheels. It was initially only offered as a 2-door saloon but the hatchback followed in March 1972 and quickly became the biggest selling variant. The tragic twist in the 127 story is that it designed by Pio Manzù, son Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù. Pio was killed, aged 30, in a car accident on the Turin-Milan autoroute on his way to present the maquette for the 127 to Fiat’s management. The 127 was the only car he designed to make it into production but he died before it did so.
