Hairy Who? 1966-1969
Stephanie Koch Media 111 South Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60601 The Art Institute of Chicago The Jean and Steven Goldman Prints and Drawings Galleries (125-101) Hairy Who? 1966-1969 From 1966 to 1969, the Hairy Who, an artist-organized exhibition group, produced imaginative and experimental work and devised novel installation and promotional strategies to display it. The group gathered local and national attention, transforming the artistic landscape of Chicago and influencing subsequent generations of artists around the world. The Hairy Who consisted of six artists: Jim Falconer (born 1943), Art Green (born 1941), Gladys Nilsson (born 1940), Suellen Rocca (born 1943), and Karl Wirsum (born 1939). As young graduates of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, all shares a penchant for drawing and are now widely known for the graphic for the artists, in all media. These galleries present the group’s works on paper, mostly drawings that did not appear in their six historical exhibitions (shown in galleries 268 and 271-73). The display also featured a vast array of the artists’ collaborative posters, and materials related to the production of these multiples. Of Particular interest is a set of lithographic printing plates and uncut press sheets made in the process of producing their 1968 comic book catalogue Smoke Hairy Who. These sheets have never been exhibited before. The informal, experimental, ephemeral, and playful potential of drawing and print media played a crucial role in both the artistic process of these artists and the ways in which they circulated their work. If no artist names are listed for a work, it was produced collaboratively by all the members of the Hairy Who. The exhibition continues in gallery 271-73. Hairy Who? 1966-1969 is part of Art Design Chicago, an initiative of the Terra Foundation or American Art exploring Chicago’s art and design legacy, with presenting partner, The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. This exhibition is funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. Major support for this exhibition is also provided by an anonymous donor, Robert J Burford, the Kemper Educational and Charitable Fund, and Kathy and Chuck Harper. Additional support is contributed by Mark and Judy Bednar, the Morton International exhibition Fund, and Deborah Lovely.
