BACK TO SCHOOL-II
My journey with Little Angels’ School had ended. And it was time to choose a new path. For any parent, maybe this is one of the most challenging decisions-which school to put your child in. There is little scope of error. So, they had to take in several opinions. I had briefed them about my friends’ decision. And it was obvious that I wanted to be at a place with familiar faces.
But getting into any school is not a cakewalk. One needs to prove himself/herself worthy of studying there. The knowledge and skill level of each aspiring student was tested by an Entrance test. This is a common practice in every educational institutions, more competitive these days. So, I was made to appear for the entrance test. Not one, but about three, for various schools. After a few days, when I asked them about the results, I was just told, “Fine!” My family doesn’t like to discuss my good results. Not because they don’t like to praise me, but they do so remind me of the fact that no matter what your results are, you have to keep on working, regardless of praise or criticism, good or bad. I didn’t get it at that time, but over the years, by some experience,I understood the message that was being conveyed. This was to be taught later at school also…
So, it was final now. Stewart School was going to be my new destination. And “Stewartonian” was going to be my new identity. Established in 1882 by Dr. William Day Stewart,Stewart School, Cuttack is one of the oldest schools in the state of Odisha, and also the eldest among the four Stewart Schools in the state. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who was born and brought up in Cuttack, was also an alumnus of this school.
But I was unaware of all this. I was just relying on my slight confidence and experience of what a school is. On top of that, when your parents assure you by saying , “Come on, you are a grown-up now”, tears which are just about to roll down your cheeks, suddenly retrace their way back into the eyes. Now that the bombshell was dropped, you don’t have an option.
Blue shirt, grey shorts, navy blue tie, grey socks and black shoes, this was my uniform now. My prized possessions for my entire lifetime. Throughout my journey at Stewart School, I was made to inculcate the habit of taking care of my uniform, and ensuring that was tidy. This habit I had developed and always stuck to it. I had also sometimes avoided my games period in order to keep it spick and span. On the last day of my school, when all were busy getting their shirts signed by my dear teachers, I preferred a notebook, reason being the same!!
The first day, my first steps into my new school, all crystal clear images afresh in my mind. The first person I met, was a well-built tall person, in a yellow uniform. Our security uncle, smiling, and wishing all, “Good Morning!” It is aptly said that if you see a smiling face, you feel a sense of optimism and a sense of comfort throughout the day. Though I shyly walked away from uncle, but that seemed to be a wonderful welcome for me at my new school.
An entirely new concept awaited me here. Unlike my previous school, the students here were divided into four sections-A,B,C and D. On the first day of the new session, one had to dash in through the crowd to find out which section one was in. And I had joined in mid-session, so I was the lone person, standing with Mummy, trying to find my section from my officials. After sometime, I was told that I was assigned section I-’B’. As I was walking through the school campus, holding Mummy’s hand and wandering about the significance of these English alphabets here, I reached my new classroom. My new class teacher, after a brief conversation with Mummy, smiled and let me in. She introduced me to my new friends of I-’B’. I had got my new friends, had they also?
I was made to sit beside a girl, on the second row. Shy I was, I didn’t dare to ask her name. But during the recess, when I was trying to open my tiffin box, it seemed as if Mummy had put in her entire might in closing it. My new friend, just smiled, asked for the box, and opened it easily. We then, had a chat and introduced ourselves ad this was how I had my first friend here.
There were several new, interesting concepts here. One of them was the concept of a class monitor. I found that after our class teacher, the monitor was the second-in-command. Walking around the class at free will, with a ruler in hand, after our class teacher, the monitor had the power to punish anyone. This was interesting… On enquiring more, I got to know that a class monitor is appointed by the class teacher for helping her in maintaining discipline in the class. Also, a class monitor has the responsibility of helping the class teacher in all her work. After knowing all this, somehow, I felt the urge to get this post. I wanted to be a class monitor. But just saying doesn’t do the job.
One more interesting thing here was the annual class decoration competition. By now, it had been well established in my class that I could be trusted with anything in the world but drawing. And this annual class decoration competition was just about that. Each student had to make a beautiful chart paper presentation on a pre-decided theme and it was to be pasted on the walls of the classroom. The best class received an award from Principal Ma’m at a special function. We were all asked to prepare charts. I was in a fix what to do, when again, Mummy came to my rescue. Mummy had an artistic hand, and she loves painting. She took up this mammoth task of creating the chart paper presentation. Tell me anything except drawing and I would be ready for it. For the class decoration, all of us contributed small amounts to buy a table cloth and a pen stand, which would add to the magnificence of a teacher’s table. That year my section received the second prize…
Few people at that time knew that I was a singer. It was two years then when I was having my music lessons. But those who knew insisted that I should participate in the annual function. One of those, even secretly gave my name to the cultural department. When I was called from the class for the auditions, I was visibly surprised. I was asked to sing the prayer song which we song everyday before our class begins. After hearing just a single line, our music teacher said, “Great! You are selected!”
Annual functions is perhaps the most awaited day for any school student. The entire mood of the school changes a month before. Hustle and bustle all over, students and teachers busy preparing for the various cultural activities, it is the dream of almost every school student to feature in the annual function of one’s school. And I had got the opportunity from the very first year itself!! I don’t remember a single year as a Stewartonian, when I was not a part of the annual function. This was fun. You make several new friends in the process, and get the blessings of several teachers too.. The first year, dressed in a green, frilled shirt, I remember singing the song, “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands,…”. The clap that follows your performance is just so pleasing. Perhaps some of the best memories during those ten years were due the annual days only.
In all this fun and excitement, I always ensured that I followed each and every word of my teacher to the best of my ability. Perhaps that earned me the title of ,”Most disciplined child”. No matter what, I have always tried to stick to this principle of mine till date.
My journey as a Stewartonian began wonderfully. Let’s see what comes next…

While physical get-togethers to mark India’s Independence Day may not be possible this year in the light of the pandemic, virtual celebrations seem to pave the way forward, with interactive exhibitions about the history of the National Anthem, the times and influences of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. Bharat Ratna awarded musical maestros connecting freedom with their music are just a few clicks away.
Google Arts and Culture is presenting these digital exhibits, in partnership with Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata (a Ministry of Culture museum), Indian Music Experience Museum, Bengaluru, and Museum of Art and Photography, Bengaluru.
Here are some journeys to take virtually on Google Arts and Culture as you remember the freedom struggle and India’s liberation from centuries of colonial rule.
“10 Things to Know About the National Anthem”
This story features snippets of history about the National Anthem of India, like how its origin is from Rabindranath Tagore’s Bengali song ‘Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata’, an English translation by him called ‘The Morning Song of India’, the involvement of Subhash Chandra Bose in its selection, and a few inspirations in modern-day.
“Legends of Indian Music and their Memorabilia” by Indian Music Experience Museum, Bengaluru
The exhibit showcases the quartet of Bharat Ratna awardees, who are associated with India, freedom, and music. M.S. Subbulakshmi was Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite musician and held fund-raisers for the Independence Movement. Ravi Shankar was known for his raga “Mohan Kauns”, conceived as a tribute to Gandhi upon news of his death. Bismillah Khan performed with his shehnai on 15 Aug 1947, in the welcoming of freedom to India. Bhimsen Joshi was the voice of ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’, the iconic 80s audio-visual experience, the core message of which was “unity in diversity”.
“Making the Mahatma” by Museum of Art & Photography, Bengaluru
Mahatma Gandhi has influenced not just key thinkers and writers with his involvement in the freedom movement, but a plethora of visual imagery that captured his personal and social life. The availability of lithographic presses that helped mass produce images, and cameras allowed to capture a moment as is, inspired the creation of posters, photographic records, artworks, caricatures, and more to be created. Museum of Art and Photography highlights a selection of works, such as Gandhi’s portrait on a map of India, a collage of cutouts depicting his journey from life to death, calendar prints that iconized him, and events and associated personalities from his life envisioned metaphorically in posters.
“Rabindranath Tagore” by Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata, Ministry of Culture
Tagore was the first non-European and first Indian to be awarded a Nobel Prize in 1913. Soon after in 1915, he was honored with a knighthood by the British. However, following the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919, he denounced the knighthood in protest. The Victoria Memorial Hall houses a collection of portrait drawings, photographs including Tagore with Gandhi, and manuscripts of songs and letters written by him, and invites viewers to explore the life of Tagore with this online homage this Independence Day.

The Forgotten Army review: Kabir Khan’s big-budget Amazon series is a forgettable fiasco - tv
Tumblr media
The Forgotten Army Director - Kabir Khan Cast - Sunny Kaushal, Sharvari, Rohit Choudhary, Karanvir Malhotra, MK Raina, R Badree, TJ Bhanu, Shruti Seth Director Kabir Khan said in a recent interview that while he can forgive poor filmmaking, he can never forgive poor politics. The politics of his first show as a creator, Amazon Prime’s The Forgotten Army, may be above reproach, but the filmmaking certainly isn’t. There were many ways in which the five-episode war drama could have gone wrong, especially in today’s volatile climate, when history can be reshaped to suit popular sentiments. But before you can heave a sigh of relief at the show not falling into the same torrent of nationalistic pride that consumed recent ‘historicals’ such as Manikarnika and Tanhaji, it drowns in its own good intentions. Watch the Forgotten Army trailer here:  Among its many faults is a narrative that merely grazes its subject without ever penetrating its depths, like a poorly aimed bullet against an enemy’s skin. It honours the bravery of real heroes by reducing them to composite characters, effectively diluting their achievements by chucking in multiple storylines into the mix, in a manner that doesn’t do a single one of them any favours. The Forgotten Army aims for the poignancy of HBO’s Band of Brothers, but displays none of the patience. For instance, a character who mocks another in episode one for being ‘the black sheep of the family’ gushes that it would be an honour for him if they’d travel to a protest together in episode three. This would be a fine progression for either of them had the show taken its time in fleshing them out. But all we’re told, essentially, is that one of them is a ‘student of journalism’ with some vague idea about making a difference, and the other is a PTSD-ridden war veteran. One chill-out session and proximately 15 minutes of screen-time can’t transform their equation. Khan frames the show in two timelines, with the same character at different ages – one timeline is set in the past, during World War 2, and the other is set in the late 90s – monumentally complicating an already disjointed structure. Before we can settle into one storyline, we’re hurled across decades, once again forced to form a connection to characters we know next to nothing about. What motivates the soldier Surinder Sodhi (Sunny Kaushal), besides a strong sense of duty? Whom is he fighting for – is he a traitor or a true nationalist? Is a passionately delivered call to arms all it takes to rally thousands towards an uncertain cause? All these questions are addressed with only a slight interest, which is fine, but did they learn nothing from the mistakes made by films like Pearl Harbor, whose insistence on shoehorning in a romantic subplot against the backdrop of a real tragedy was summed up by a scathing New York Times headline: ‘War is hell, but very pretty’?There is a similar romantic track in The Forgotten Army, involving Surinder, who should, in all honesty, have been concerned with graver matters, and a young photographer with a misplaced sense of identity. Another subplot, with feminist overtones, must have sounded like a good idea on paper, but exists as if in a vacuum.
Tumblr media
Newcomer Sharvari, in a still from Amazon’s The Forgotten Army. The show jumps back and forth between these two timelines with the subtlety of a cannonball to the chest – a scene on a train in 1943 is mirrored by a similar scene in 1996; when a character goes to a certain country in the 40s, he makes sure to visit the same countries again in the ‘present day’ timeline. The episodes, at 20-25 minutes long, are too short to sell the personal struggles of these people, especially Surinder, whose past as a soldier in the Indian National Army still haunts him, many years later. With such a restrictive runtime, Khan and his writers are forced to deliver exposition in a rather blunt manner. So when the elder Surinder asks his grand nephew, Amar, if he’s heard of the Battle of Singapore, the angsty teenager proceeds to recite a hypothetical Wikipedia entry about the historical event, as if he’d memorised it just moments before. To be clear, both Surinder and Amar are aware of the battle. The recitation was merely for the audience’s convenience, perhaps because the writers assumed that even in the year 2020, we prefer context be spoon-fed to us and not conveyed dramatically. To have a stilted young actor deliver dialogue as dry as this is boring enough, but to have one of the biggest stars in the country narrate what are essentially episode recaps, is pointless. I will not reveal whom Kabir Khan has cast to do this narration, but I will tell you this: It’s not Salman.
Tumblr media
Sunny Kaushal, in a still from The Forgotten Army. It’s quite obvious that Amazon spent good money on the show, but in a trend that is slowly becoming overwhelming clear, Indian filmmakers seem to equate scale with CGI. There isn’t a single computer-generated shot that can’t immediately be indentified for what it is. Instead of seamlessly blending into the background and servicing the story, the shoddy CGI draws attention to itself, thereby distracting from the emotional core of what is happening. On one of the few occasions that Subhash Chandra Bose makes an appearance – despite being the founder of the INA, he mostly remains a background presence – he’s facing a sea of CGI soldiers, cloned with perhaps the same technology they used to animate crowds in FIFA video games, circa 2002. Also read: Bard of Blood review: Emraan Hashmi’s Netflix series pales in comparison to Amazon’s Family Man For some strange reason that I can’t quite understand, Khan has shot the show with long lenses, inadvertently creating a metaphorical chasm between the audience and the characters, as if the literal one he’d already constructed with the writing wasn’t enough. The action set-pieces have little sense of geography, robbing them of urgency and cohesion. An early battle scene meant to evoke classic Hollywood war movies resembles a playground brawl more than anything else. It remains to be seen if an undemanding crowd takes to the The Forgotten Army, but ask yourself this: can a show that is itself at risk of being forgotten be relied upon to shed light on a forgotten piece of history?
