The semi-companion piece to Kevin's one and it's all about Mads, of course. Dedicated to Kevison Nation (every single fudging one of you) and to @flythesail and @penny259 (your comments have me weeping haha 😚). Also on ao3.
A little into Madison Pearson by x (with additions) Summer 2026
I first met Madison Pearson a year ago at George Clooney’s 65th birthday celebrations in Perthshire, Scotland in a fashion closer to that of long-travelled friends who haven’t seen each other in years than that of complete strangers who just so happened to enjoy the same foodie indulgence (bacon-wrapped dates, anyone?). Despite the grandeur of the guests present at the lavish affair – politicians, laureates, philanthropists and A-list celebrities (including her own husband actor Kevin Pearson) – Madison Pearson had the kind of invigorating energy that just drew absolutely anyone in.
Perhaps it was the enchanting mix of contained excitement and understated class she exuded that will warm you upon beholding up close, or perhaps it was the charm of a more loquacious woman of California mixed with the rare intelligence of a world-traveller. Either way, despite the taxing social waltz her husband took her throughout the night bumping elbows with the elites, Madison was one of those people who truly left a lasting impression.
Squeezed next to her in the back of a cab, Madison is head-to-toe in Temperley London x Axel Arigato (vintage-inspired nautical jumpsuit and platform suedes) en route to a baking class where her five-year-old twins Nick and Franny are waiting for her to join them along with their father.
“I was supposed to get changed,” she says, lamenting on her attire worn for a meeting with some West Chester development executives that’s perhaps too luxurious for an afternoon of mixing flour and butter and sugar. “But you have to make at least a bit of an impression, right?”
Madison has been the powerhouse head honcho of the Pearson family business, Big Three Homes, since its establishment three years prior. With a solid background in business management and a surefooted ability to navigate the mores of an ever-changing property development landscape, it was no question that Madison would rise up to the challenge of breaking into the market with a business model founded on family, philanthropy and sustainability.
Despite growing up largely independent without people close enough to call family, Madison has also found the means to speak about her experiences in an effort to encourage and give hope to the younger generation of girls and young women who may be going through an ongoing battle between themselves and their self-worth.
“I never felt enough,” she says of the origins of her battle with her eating disorder that began when she was still in middle school. “I look at Franny and she’s so small and carefree and I want to give her everything I never had, but I know that even that won’t be enough unless she herself realises how worthy she is of all the good and all the love that she deserves.”
We pull up outside the baking studio and she brightens at spotting her husband and twins’ silhouettes behind the frosted glass windows. Nick and Franny almost topple over their stools as they rush to overwhelm their mother while their father scrambles to keep his heart rate down—a close call with their foreheads hitting the edge of the marble benches as they got down will just about do it.
Even with her petite frame, Madison carries the twins like she’s just holding a bag of groceries. Unsurprisingly, both Nick and Franny are as enamoured of their mother as she is of them and are on the verge of complaining when put down just as Kevin, grinning ear to ear, envelops Madison in his huge arms—to be fair, he’s always been quite remarkably chiselled but the Tom Ford sweater and those tailored jeans (chosen by his wife “of course” as Kevin credits) is a different level altogether. He leans down to give her a kiss.
Back in Perthshire a year ago at the Clooney extravaganza, I caught up with the married couple the day after the festivities over a traditional Scottish breakfast as we overlooked the highlands of the Gleneagles.
Perhaps unlike the Clooneys, who were still entertaining their guests from all over world, the Pearsons were much more relaxed within their own family bubble. Having just celebrated Kevin’s twin sister’s wedding three days prior with close family and friends, the pair was grateful to spend some quality time with each other and their twins without the need to be anything but present.
From my perch, Kevin and Madison were the kind of couple that were very much “old souls”. They held an affection for each other that is rooted from sincere fondness and adoration for each other—they converse like deep friends and trade wits like secret lovers. And despite the media attention of the adorable moments shared online (often by the social-savvy actor), Madison is uncompromising when it comes to the privacy of their children.
While the twins dipped in and out of the table pilfering scones or taking over their mother’s green juice, neither one of their parents were the least bit bothered by the constant attention they need to provide such a rumbunctious pair.
“They’re so funny,” Kevin said, a careful eye on little Nick who was staring at the whipped cream on his tiny finger like he was contemplating on wiping it on his dad’s face.
I do recall having a good laugh when I accompanied the family on a tour of a nearby 17th century castle and little Franny, a copy-and-paste of her mother, pointed at a wood-cut table decoration of what looked to be intertwined lovers and confidently yelled, “That’s mommy and daddy!”
The fierce mama bear of the Pearson household of four (Madison sometimes calls her husband “kid number three, but don’t tell him that or he’ll get ideas of trying for another!”), remarks that forging her own path away from her husband’s spotlight had been remarkably easy, and she gives much of the credit to the rest of the Pearson clan who all treasure family more than anything.
Even with the notoriety of her brother-in-law, rising political star Randall Pearson, who currently serves in the Philadelphia municipality and is on track for a career in congress, Madison says that quality time to rest and recuperate is a must.
“[My sisters-in-law] and I have a girls weekend every other month when we can where we literally book ourselves a gorgeous Airbnb and just glamp down. I’m talking sleep-ins, endless mimosas, spa sessions… you name it! It’s the kind of getaway that [our husbands] get really jealous for.”
And upon being reminded, Kevin, now sporting Franny’s tiny chef’s hat, shakes his head at his wife conspicuously as if in reprimand that he most definitely should be included in the gals’ next glamping session despite him being, well, not a gal.
While Nick proudly counts five of about a thousand sprinkles that are scattered on his side of the bench, Madison congratulates him with a warmth and pride that is infectious enough to make you think that she’s proud of you too. And despite her husband’s very obvious possessiveness over her—you could count only one occasion where the actor is not at arm’s length from her—when Madison focuses her attention on you, it’s not difficult to believe that this powerhouse woman could truly do absolutely anything.
“She is that and more,” Kevin says about his wife. “Sometimes I can’t believe that this is my life. Our life! Like, she’s mywife, and these two are our kids. It’s just wild! I’m grateful, just grateful.”
Despite the doubts and fear that had been Madison’s constant companions for most of her life and especially going into adulthood, there is a fierce resilience in her that she could only credit her dear grandmother Frances—her own daughter having been named after her.
“She always believed in me,” she recalls, an eye on the twins squatting by the oven watching their creations rise. Despite the deep grief and loss that are quite intimately shared by the married couple, Madison says that it has only made them more resolute in loving their children and each other as best as they possible can every day.
“You just don’t know when it’s your time,” she says. “So, Kev and I make sure that there are no ‘next times’ when it comes to our family.”
When I had asked Madison about Big Three Homes back in Scotland, she squealed at the origin story of its founding, which started with Kevin’s late father Jack Pearson having asked his wife Rebecca to start the business together as partners.
Although Jack’s tragic and unexpected passing put an indefinite hold to this dream, its fulfilment through his son Kevin and through Madison is a testament to the kind of legacy that Jack Pearson had begun through his kids.
“I mean, it started off as more of a passion project for Kev,” Madison says. “But we knew it was always going to be something really special. Especially because his first project was the house that Jack had wanted to build for his mom. And when Kevin had this wonderful idea of bringing the family together to start the business and he asked me to be a part of it, how could I have said no!”
Kevin makes a point to say though that even if the idea of Big Three Homes originally came from his parents, its fulfilment is as much a part of his and Madison’s own story as it is his parents’. And choosing to have Madison work alongside him wasn’t just the best choice (given how much of a boss she is), but it was the only choice he ever wanted or considered.
“I know this is cliché, but I can’t stand not being with her,” Kevin says. “I made a point of this when our twins were born, and I meant it!”
Madison and the family split their time between California and Pennsylvania both for Kevin’s work and for the business, but nowadays, it’s more of an 80-20 split in favour of the east coast.
When asked about a career path carved away from her hometown in California, Madison says fondly, “It surprises a lot of people when I say this but I’m actually an east coast girl.”
This fun fact translates quite well in Madison’s day to day. She could turn any conversation into an erudite discussion, and she will utterly beguile you with her knowledge of books and literature—her constant companions when she can sneak away to her own personal Taj Mahal, a stunning Japanese garden in the backyard of their Pennsylvania home which Kevin built especially for her.
As the Pearsons continue to make a splash in the world of construction, politics, arts and entertainment—a rare mix indeed for a family in the spotlight—Madison is determined to continue writing a story with her husband and her children that she never had growing up.
With the twins happily destroying their creations by the mouthfuls, Madison promises that another visit is a must and perhaps this time, she can show us a collection of Kevin’s baby photos coupled with her own personal commentary to boot.
And who would say no to that.

Punchline Takes a Hit: PT2
Tumblr media
Summary: Spencer debates the difference of love and transference. With some help from a couple of friends, he finally gets the courage to ask out his crush.
JJ could tell from the second she laid eyes on Reid that something was off. She couldn’t tell if something bad happened, or if he was just thinking. Either way, the blonde figured that talking would do the young doctor some good.
“Hey, Spence.” JJ approached the younger man. “Everything okay?”
He looked up from his paperwork with a blank face but conflicted eyes. “Yeah. Why?”
“You just seem a little quiet today. Are you sure everything’s going alright?” JJ cocked her head a little but made sure to keep her voice gentle.
Oftentimes, one had to over express themselves for Reid to get their gestures. He had no problems reading potential unsubs or the families of victims, yet he couldn’t read his friends well. If something was wrong, he could tell immediately, he could tell they were happy because they were smiling and laughing. Just about anything else, though? Annoyance, anger, confusion, contentment, curiousness? He couldn’t tell.
Reid started tugging firmly- not hard enough to hurt- on the hair at the nape of his neck. JJ noticed first as she was passing through the bullpen on her way to Hotch’s office with an armload of files. She quickly placed the files on Hotch’s desk and left before the man had a chance to say thank you.
JJ placed her hands gently on Reid’s shoulder. “Spence? Let’s go talk, okay?” She helped the young doctor out of his seat and led him to her office. “You okay?”
“Just...overthinking.” Spencer’s hand was still tugging at his hair and JJ found herself wondering if he even knew he was doing it.
“Okay,” JJ nodded slowly. She handed Reid a pencil and a rubber band from her desk with one hand, easing Spencer’s hand from his hair with the other. “Is your mom okay?” she guessed.
“Fine.” Spencer took a deep breath and shakily released it. He started muttering under his breath and JJ frowned.
“What?”
“Transference happens when someone redirects their feelings or-or a desire for someone to an unrelated third party,” Reid recited. “Freud believed it happened more often when stemming from one’s childhood. But that doesn’t make- it can’t-”
“Spence, Spence. Slow down. We can figure this out. Why do you think you’re transferring your feelings onto a third party?” JJ eased Reid to sit in her desk chair and he immediately started moving the swivel chair in semi-circles.
“I have to be. He’s not even-” Spencer stopped and shook his head.
“Who?” JJ tried to pry.
“Morgan.”
“Morgan’s bi,” JJ offered. “Do you have feelings for Morgan?”
“I can’t,” Spencer shook his head frantically. The sound that came out of his throat when the rubber band snapped against his hand was nearly a whimper.
“Why not?” JJ cocked her head and sat on the corner of her over-cluttered desk. “Spence, it’s okay to develop feelings for people- especially someone you work with and see everyday.”
“Not Morgan. He wasn’t trying to be romantic. He was just being a friend. Friends hang out after work. You and I aren’t dating and we go to the movies all the time.”
“Right,” JJ nodded. “Have you tried talking to Morgan about this?”
“No. I can’t. It would mess everything up,” Spencer stopped spinning the chair. “It’s just transference. I think I like him because he was kind and yesterday was close to what a date is supposed to be.”
“Are you sure it wasn’t a date?” JJ proposed.
“It wasn’t. He would have told me.”
“How did he ask you?” JJ’s brows furrowed together.
Spencer’s eyes gained a distant look. “Pretty Boy? Yeah? Wanna get some coffee that’s supposed to be sweet without rotting your teeth? My treat. Oh. Sure. The coffee they have here isn’t good enough? Do you see the ability to steam mil-”
“Wait, wait,” JJ stopped Reid from continuing the rest of the conservation. “Morgan offering to pay was the indication of it being a date.”
It was Reid’s turn to frown. “How is that an indication of a date? That’s such an everyday thing- he pays for my coffee all the time.” His eyes widened. “Have we been on dates before I didn’t know?”
“No, no, Spence, he specified that this time was his treat. It wasn’t a convenience where we were on a case and you both needed coffee. This was going out of the way after work instead of going home.”
“I didn’t know… This isn’t transference?” Spencer’s brown eyes finally met JJ’s.
“No. You two like each other. There’s nothing being transferred.” JJ wore a small, encouraging smile.
*****
Elle was a little more than confused when she got a text from Reid that night. It was pretty rare for the young man to contact anyone outside of work seeing he had such a strong dislike towards technology.
The text read: Are flowers too much for a first date?
Elle shook her head with a soft smile. Boys, she thought with a sigh. Regardless, she answered the poor boy’s text. You have to be careful with roses. They mean different things. Roses are too strong.
Roses are too strong? Reid frowned and texted Hotch instead. He was married; he’d know about flower meanings, right?
Hotch chuckled as he answered his phone. What’s so funny?” Haley asked.
“Do you remember Dr. Spencer Reid?” Hotch looked at the blonde.
“He’s the shy, Autistic boy, right?” She looked up from feeding Jack.
“Yeah. He just texted me, ‘do you know anything about flower symbolism? Elle says flowers have different messages’.” Hotch’s thumb danced across the flip-phone’s buttons.
“What are you telling him?”
“That roses have the highest chance of getting him into his date’s bed. Pink camellias and carnations are signs of love and longing; ferns represent new beginnings.” Hotch typed the names of the flowers, placing an equals sign before the meaning.
“Do you know who his date is?”
“SSA Hotchner does not.”
So yes he did.
*****
Once Reid bought the flowers, he got into a cab and headed for Morgan’s. He knocked on the door, flowers in hand. His heart was hammering in his chest while he waited, jumping at the sudden barking of Clooney.  It had slipped his mind that Morgan had a dog.
Morgan opened the door, a little shocked to see Reid with a bouquet of flowers. “What’s up, Pretty Boy?”
“I-I…” Reid’s heart was suddenly in his throat and he gulped. “I talked to JJ and I didn’t know yesterday was supposed to date.” the young doctor paused. “I didn’t- I haven’t been on a date before. I didn’t know that-”
“Spencer, Spencer. Slow down. It’s okay. Why don’t you come in?” Morgan opened the door a little wider led Reid in with a gentle hand on his forearm. Reid followed inside and Morgan closed the door behind them.
Clooney was sitting on the couch, completely ignoring the men without a care in the world.
“I wanted to ask you out on a real date- one that I know is a date. JJ said flowers were a nice gesture.”
Morgan chuckled and took the flowers from Reid when the latter offered them. “You’re sure this is something you’re okay, Spencer?”
“You aren’t pressuring me; this isn’t transference. I genuinely have feelings for you,” Spencer nodded, not breaking eye contact.
The solid, unwavering eye contact was the note that assured Morgan he was serious. Spencer hated eye contact. It made him squirm and stutter. Spencer only ever made eye contact for longer than a split second when he was sure of a detail in a profile or he was info-dumping and the person he was talking to was honestly engaging back.
“Alright, Pretty Boy,” Morgan nodded with a smile. “We’ll go on a real date. We’ll think of something.” The man was already formulating ideas for the date. Somewhere that wasn’t too bright or loud, somewhere that didn’t serve spicy food. It narrowed things down some.
“I-I know I’m not an easy person. I just...something’s good,” he tried to explain. “I don’t... “ he stopped and took a deep breath.
“You ain’t gotta know, man. Sometimes, ya just gotta go with it.”
“Just gotta go with it,” Reid repeated with a smile.

BOB HOPE
May 29, 1903 - July 27, 2003
Tumblr media
Bob Hope was born Lesley Townes Hope in England in 1903. During his extensive career (in virtually all forms of media) he received five honorary Academy Awards. After a brief marriage to his vaudeville partner Grace Troxell, he wed singer and actress Dolores Read, with whom he adopted four children. Although they stayed together for the rest of his life, their marriage was not always an easy one, with Hope having a reputation as a womanizer, and constantly his constant travel for performances.  He was so busy on screen and off that he was facetiously dubbed “Rapid Robert”.
Aside from his collaboration with Lucille Ball, he was known for his partnership with crooner Bing Crosby on the “Road” films, his devotion to the USO, and his love of golf.
Tumblr media
In 1945, Desi Arnaz was the orchestra leader on Bob Hope’s NBC radio show.
HOPE (about Lucy and Desi): “Lips and hands were all over one and another. I never saw a couple loving each other more after Bogie and Bacall.”
Tumblr media
Ball and Hope had made four feature films together: Sorrowful Jones (1949), Fancy Pants (1950), The Facts of Life (1960), and Critic’s Choice (1963).
Tumblr media
Hope and Ball first collaborated on television on September 14, 1950 on the third installment of “The Star-Spangled Revue”, Hope’s first regular television program.  Lucy played the mayor of NYC and Bob her henpecked husband.
Tumblr media
Kicking off season six of “I Love Lucy” in October 1956, Bob Hope guest-starred as as himself. The story was built around the real-life fact that Hope was part owner of the Cleveland Indians Baseball team.
Tumblr media
Two weeks later, in one of TV’s first network cross-overs, the entire cast of “I Love Lucy” appeared on “The Bob Hope Chevy Show”. The premise of the sketch (later colorized for home video) supposed that Bob, instead of Desi, married Lucy and became her bandleader husband on the sitcom.
Tumblr media
In October 1959, Lucy and Hope were two of many celebrities paying tribute to “Eleanor Roosevelt on Her Diamond Jubilee” aired as part of “Sunday Showcase” on NBC.
Tumblr media
On January 10, 1960, Hope and Ball were two of the stars profiled in “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood.”  Lucille is seen in front of her Desilu Playhouse on the backlot. Standing amid a pile of suitcases, Bob Hope talks about Hollywood in general, presenting almost a monologue on the subject.
Hope:“Hedda has a fabulous fund of Hollywood knowledge. She has to wear those big hats to keep the secrets from leaking out.”
Tumblr media
On February 15, 1961, Ball served as a presenter on “The Bob Hope Buick Sports Show.” Boxer Floyd Patterson could not attend the ceremony on the West Coast, so Hope shows footage of Lucille Ball presenting him the award on the East Coast, where she was appearing in Wildcat on Broadway.
Tumblr media
On October 24, 1962 Bing Crosby and Juliet Prowse joined Lucy for “The Bob Hope Show”. In a sketch, Lucille plays a District Attorney and Bob a gangster named Bugsy.
Tumblr media
During the “Bob Hope Special: TV Guide Awards” on April 14, 1963, Lucille Ball is nominated for Favorite Female Performer. Ball is not present so a still photo of her is shown instead. The winner is Carol Burnett.
Tumblr media
On a May 5, 1963 “Toast of the Town” (aka “The Ed Sullivan Show”) from New York City, Bob Hope and Lucille Ball promote their new movie Critic’s Choice.
Tumblr media
The pair continued their Critic’s Choice promotion tour that same day (May 5, 1963) by appearing on “What’s My Line?”  This would be their last film together and one they both considered a failure.
Tumblr media
On April 19, 1964, Hope and Ball teamed for a CBS Comedy Special titled “Mr. and Mrs.” in which they played themselves and a husband and wife acting team.
Tumblr media
Hope made a cameo appearance in "The Lucy Show” (TLS S3;E2) on September 28, 1964, that starred Jack Benny as a plumber with hidden talents.
Tumblr media
In “Bob Hope Presents Chrysler Theatre: Have Girls, Will Travel” on October 16, 1964, Lucille Ball does a cameo as Hope’s wife in a cast of ‘girls’ that includes Jill St. John, Marilyn Maxwell, and Rhonda Fleming.
Tumblr media
“A Bob Hope Comedy Special: Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies” on September 28, 1966, Lucile Ball played herself and arrived in Bob Hope’s bedroom on a chauffeur-driven adult-size tricycle! During their scene, old friends Ball and Hope continually crack each other up.
Tumblr media
“Jack Benny’s Carnival Nights” (March 20, 1968) featured both Ball and Hope, although they did not share any scenes together.
Tumblr media
Bob Hope was there when Lucille Ball won her fourth (and final) competitive Emmy Award on a May 19, 1968 telecast from The Hollywood Palladium. Don Adams and Bill Cosby also won.
Tumblr media
“The Dean Martin Christmas Special” (December 19,1968) featured many celebrities including Hope and Ball in (separate) cameos. Lucy promises that the kids at the City of Hope Medical Center will have a Merry Christmas.
Tumblr media
Bob Hope, Lucille Ball (and dozens of other stars) make guest appearances on “The Dean Martin Show” sixth season opener on September 17, 1970.
Tumblr media
On “Jack Benny’s 20th Anniversary Show” (November 16, 1970) Lucy plays Benny’s maid, Janet. Bob does a monologue about Benny but does not share the screen with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
That same date (November 16, 1970) Ball appeared on “The Bob Hope Show: Bringing Back Vaudeville.” Bob plays a hypnotist who takes Lucy out of the audience to be his stooge.
Tumblr media
“Swing Out, Sweet Land” (November 29, 1970) was a star-studded patriotic special featuring Lucille Ball (voice of the Statue of Liberty) and Bob Hope entertaining the troops - at Valley Forge!
Tumblr media
“Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Jack Benny* But Were Afraid To Ask” (March 10, 1971) featured Bob Hope in a quick cameo as a juggler and Lucille Ball plays a star-struck young Goldwyn Girl seduced by leading man Benny.
Tumblr media
Ball and Hope were both recognized with plaques on “Zenith Presents: A Salute to Television’s 25th Anniversary” on September 10, 1972.
Tumblr media
An October 12, 1973 episode of “The Merv Griffin Show” is a Salute to Lucille Ball featuring her husband and children, and her two most famous male co-stars, Bob Hope and Gale Gordon.

Tumblr media
Naturally, Hope is on the dais for the “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast of Lucille Ball” on February 7, 1975.
Bob Hope: “Lucy’s always doing nice things. Even though she’s not with Desi anymore she got him a job as a dialogue coach on ‘Chico and the Man’.”
Tumblr media
“Bob Hope’s World of Comedy” (October 29, 1969) naturally included Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
“NBC: The First Fifty Years” (November 26, 1976) was a four and a half hour extravaganza that featured NBC’s biggest star Bob Hope, but somehow also included CBS star Lucille Ball, four years before she would leap over to the peacock network.

Tumblr media
“Bob Hope Salutes the Ohio Jubilee” (December 3, 1978) has Lucy in a flimsy negligee to get her husband’s (Hope) attention during a football game.
Tumblr media
“The Annual Friars Club Tribute Presents a Salute to Johnny Carson” on May 6, 1979 was a testimonial dinner at Waldorf-Astoria with Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Kirk Douglas and, of course, Ed McMahon. Lucy was accompanied by her husband and daughter.
Tumblr media

Sometimes Beginnings start with Goodbye Part II - What’s Left
This is a TRR AU fan fic inspired by the Choices book series The Royal Romance All rights and many thanks are given to Pixelberry Studios for the use of their characters. This fic is written for my friend @tornbetween2loves who is celebrating her birthday and requested the prompt “let me love you” for Drake X MC where MC accepts Liam’s proposal. She requested some angsty heartbreak. Please read the parts in order or it may be confusing. You can find all parts on my Masterlist. Still more story but I wanted to post this for her today. There will be at least three parts. I still haven’t decided if I’m brave enough for this paddling pool. I’m sorry this one doesn’t have any fluff.  Angst is really hard for me. I promise there will be better in the future. Rating: M - Mature themes                                          Word count: 3000 ish Warnings: discussions of serious illness, hospital setting   Tagging: @tornbetween2loves @gardeningourmet @kennaxval @stopforamoment @bobasheebaby @cora-nova @indiacater @hopefulmoonobject @drakewalkerwhipped @carabeth
The phone rang a third time and dropped to voice mail. “You are not in my book. Leave a message.”
Bastien closed his eyes and the muscle in his jaw twitched before he heard the beep that demanded his reply. “Your Grace this is Bastien. I’m at Agia Sofia Hospital where Drake has been admitted. I, I am sorry to have disturbed you.”
He hung up. What was he thinking calling the Dutchess of Lythikos? ‘Hey I’m stuck at the hospital wanna come have coffee with me? I don’t want to be alone.’ He shook his head and his phone rang.   “Ya!” “You left a message. Do you need anything? I’m on my way. I should be there in a few hours.”   Her voice was different. He was puzzling about that unfamiliar tone.   “Bastien… are, are you doing well?”   He closed his eyes and sighed. “The doctor advised me to call someone. It’s been… Thank you for calling me back your Grace.”   “Ah kanena provlima. Is Savannah there?” He could hear her moving around occasionally calling out orders.
“Not yet. Her Grace is not able to be here until tomorrow afternoon.”   “Have you eaten?”           “No. No. That one. … I don’t know how long. Yes. Yes of course.” “Pardon Bastien. Just trying to guess what I may need.”   Her voice, the sounds of normalcy in the background. It was embarrassing to him how comforting it was. Bastien never gave himself time to be lonely or bored. There was always, always something that demanded his attention and it was his job to pay meticulous attention to every detail. Lives, the lives of the royal family had depended on that dedication and focus for over twenty years. He couldn’t ever remember a time when he felt as helpless and lost as the last four hours, five hours he amended as he reflexively checked his watch.   “Bastien? Can you hear me? Ya? Ya?”
“Oh, me synchoreite your Grace. I, no, I haven’t eaten.”
There was an audible sigh. He knew her left brow was raised. Could practically hear her scolding him in that moment before she replied.   “Bastien, I want you to go get something to eat. A little. I’ll be there as soon as I can but it will still be three hours. Do this for me so I don’t have to beat you up when I get there.  Now I’m thinking you’ve already called everyone. But is there anything you need?”   That tone was in her voice again and it was terribly distracting as he was trying to listen to what she was saying and interpret her tone at the same time.
“I need a change of clothes. I haven’t called Leo, or Hana, or Kiera. I didn’t call Maxwell but I expect that Savannah would tell him. There’s not much for me to tell at this point. The doctor couldn’t tell me much because I’m not family. She asked me a lot of questions… It’s not good.”   “Bastien…” There was a long silent pause, finally, “I’m going to make some calls and I’ll be there as soon as I can.”  He sat there staring at his phone for a long time thinking about the conversation. Thinking how at odds it was with what he knew of Olivia Nevrakis.
                          ***********************************************
It was 9:30 in the evening when Maxwell came into the ICU waiting room with a rolling suitcase. He didn’t spot Bastien at first. The figure in green surgical scrubs with his left elbow propped on the chair arm his left hand holding his brow while he looked at his phone didn’t match any image of Bastien Lykel that Maxwell had.
Bastien looked up smelling the fresh woodsy Ambre Topkapi cologne that Maxwell Beaumont always favored and spotted him looking slightly lost and as serious as he’d ever seen him look. There were only ten other people in the waiting room at this time of the night. He raised his hand and saw the surprised look on Maxwell’s face as he spotted him and headed over.
He stood to greet him. Maxwell pulled him into a hug. “Thank, thank you Lord Beaumont.” He patted Maxwell’s back awkwardly.   Maxwell felt his stomach knot as he took in Bastien. He’d gone camping with Bastien and Drake and never seen Bastien look so distressed and disheveled. He remembered joking with Leo when they were young about Bastien never seeming to have afternoon scruff. He speculated that he kept a razor in his pocket so he could shave anytime a hair might dare to grow. And Leo assured him that Bastien simply intimidated his beard into not growing when he was at work. It would all grow out overnight and he would look like a great bear when he woke up in the morning before he shaved it.  “Bastien, no formalities. I just got the message. What happened?”  He cleared his throat struggling with his emotions, again. “I don’t know, Maxwell.” Shaking his head he ran his hands through the dark fullness of his hair. “I found him unconscious in his bathroom floor. I’ve no idea how long, how long he’d been out…” Bastien closed his eyes and locked his jaw struggling with the need to just weep over the vision he kept replaying of the moment he found Drake.   Maxwell was hugging him again. “Hey Bastien, my man, I brought you some clothes and things if you want to ditch the doctor disguise. Though I have to say you lend a whole George Clooney debonair style to them.” He patted him on the back and let him go. Giving him a concerned smile. “Oh, and I was supposed to make sure you had gotten something to eat. Olivia was… Well she was very Olivia about it all.”   Not trusting his voice Bastien just nodded and took the suitcase from him. He had another moment when he opened the suitcase and found that Maxwell had packed him a full suit, a couple of handkerchiefs, ties, shirts, boxers, and socks. But there in the bottom was also a carefully folded set of denim clothes for Drake.
He turned on the water in the handicapped sink washed his face and hair and wept. For a few moments with the water running he just wept. Then he caught a deep breath. Turned the water on cold and ran the icy water over his head and face before grabbing one of the hand towels Maxwell had packed to dry himself off. He shaved. Brushed his teeth. And changed into the suit. For the first time in hours he felt in control of himself again when he left the bathroom and headed back to the waiting room and Maxwell.  Maxwell looked up from his phone when Bastien returned. “You should have called me Bastien.”
Bastien heard the hurt in the young man’s voice though his face was open and friendly as always. “Me synchoreite. Truly. I called Savannah and just presumed that they would let you know.”
“Yeah. I’m sure they would have but I wasn’t there. I’ve been helping out with a children’s theater group here in the capital. So I just got a text from them saying I should call them when I got a chance. I was going to call them when I got back to my room; but Olivia lit up my phone with calls and texts and voice messages.” He shrugged. “It worked out. I just wish you had called me.” He smiled.
Bastien knew Maxwell was truly hurt when he saw that smile. It was a tell of his since childhood. When Maxwell was hurt emotionally he would smile. When he was around someone who was in distress he would say something funny or complimentary to cheer them up.
“You’re looking better.” He fidgeted a bit not wanting to cause more distress. “So um, what has the doctor told you?”
Shaking his head Bastien sat down. “Nothing. I’m not immediate family so they won’t tell me anything. Savannah said they would be here tomorrow afternoon. Bianca won’t be in for a couple of days. I expect Liam and Giselle around six in the morning. I suspect they will talk with the King and Queen.”
Maxwell stood up with a determined look. “Well I’m his brother. So let’s see what the doctor will tell me.”
Bastien smiled remembering when Maxwell helped him locate Tariq. “Let’s go see if we can find Dr. Ardes.”
He took Maxwell to the ICU nurses station and introduced him as Drake’s brother-in-law and returned the scrubs they had lent him thanking them. The head nurse looked at Drake’s chart and immediately called the doctor. After a brief conversation she told them the doctor would come find them in the waiting room and they were sent back to the same place as before.
Maxwell sat down looking a little frustrated. But Bastien pulled out his phone and started searching the internet. A few minutes later Bastien was looking grimly at the screen and Maxwell realized it. “What’s up Bas?”
Bastien shook his head. “This isn’t good. I saw a few things on his chart. I just wanted to see if I could find out what they meant.”
Just then he saw Dr. Ardes walk in. He stood up and introduced her. “Lord Beaumont this is Dr. Ardes. She is the doctor who spoke to me earlier who has been taking care of Drake.”
Dr. Ardes extended her hand to Maxwell and rather than shaking it he took it and bowed over it. “Thank you for taking care of my brother, Dr. Ardes. Mr. Lykel raised Drake and his sister after their father was killed in the line of duty. You have full permission to discuss anything with him that you would with us. He is family I assure you.”
Bastien caught the faint dilation of her pupils and slight flush as Maxwell bowed over her hand. She had changed her clothes since speaking to him earlier. Of course there was no way to know what she had dealt with in the last couple of hours since speaking with him.
“Thank you for coming Lord Beaumont”, she smiled at them and nodded for them to take their seats. Bastien understood the subtle authoritarian move at the same time he admired the skill she executed it with.
She looked at her watch before she started. “A little over six hours ago your brother was brought in to the emergency center here unresponsive, dehydrated, with low blood pressure and with mild hypothermia, that’s low body temperature. That’s what we know for certain.
He was displaying symptoms of Sepsis which is a systemic blood infection and possible Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome as indicated by terribly low Thiamine levels and certain abnormalities in response. This is what we suspect at this point and what we are testing and treating him for.
Right now his kidneys are having problems and we are trying to get them to respond using fluids via IV. Because we don’t know how long he has been unconscious I would like to go ahead and put him on dialysis. That might give his kidneys a little help while we wait for the lab work to come back and hopefully identify the source of the infection.
He has had a couple of seizures we suspect are related to his drinking. We are giving him massive doses of broad spectrum antibiotics as well as Thiamine in his IV for the Sepsis and Wernicke. Once we get some of the lab work back hopefully we’ll be able to use targeted antibiotics.
I’m certain you have questions. I will answer to the best of my ability.”
Maxwell looked pale and was blinking trying to process all the information.
Bastien nodded at her, “Thank you Dr. Ardes. Could you give us some idea of what you expect to happen in the next few hours?”
She nodded. “Well I can tell you my hope. I’m hoping we put him on dialysis and his kidneys wake up with minimal damage. If we start the dialysis in the next half hour we should know more about that in the next four hours. In the next six hours I’m hoping we get lab work back that tells us how to target this sepsis. I’m hoping that within that time he wakes up and complains a LOT about being here and what we’ve done to him.”
Bastien gave her a grateful smile. “Thank you. Thank you for taking care of him.”
Maxwell finally asked, “Is, is he going to make it? Can we see him?”
She lifted a brow assessing. “Lord Beaumont your brother is gravely ill. But he also has what is in my, perhaps biased opinion, the best staff in the world treating him in what is one of the top hospitals in this country. And he’s young. In fair physical shape taking things into consideration. And he has a good support group. I think we can get him through what we are seeing at this time. His temperature has regulated in the last hour and that is a good sign. So I’m hopeful.”
She looked over at Bastien a long moment before continuing. “But… Lord Beaumont, twenty nine year old young men who are in good shape and live in palaces with access to the very best medical care don’t wind up with these conditions unless there are other factors. His long term prognosis is going to have everything to do with us identifying and treating those factors.
What I have to concentrate on right now is this minute, this hour. And I have to respond to the now. Because now is what we have. If, if we get to the other side of this, then and only then can we evaluate what’s left and make a plan going forward.”
Maxwell was silently weeping beside him and Bastien patted him on the back.
  “Dr. could we see him?”
  She nodded. “Follow me.”
“Lord Beaumont are you willing to sign treatment papers for him? Since you are here I really can’t proceed without your permission.”
He nodded wiping his eyes. “Of course.”
She led them into the ICU spoke quietly with the head nurse and signed treatment orders on his chart before she took them over to a small table so they could get gowned and masked. She explained it was for Drake’s protection that he wasn’t contagious but his immune system was struggling at the moment and he didn’t need to catch anything. When they were all properly dressed she led them to the far left corner of the U shaped ward.
In the center of the room Drake lay in the hospital bed with his head slightly elevated. IV’s dripped in both arms and Bastien noted that both his hands and feet were secured to the bed with buckling lambs wool cuffs. Blankets were draped over the raised bed railings. And the heart monitor silently showed the graph of his steady heartbeat, oxygen levels, and blood pressure.
Bastien softly asked the doctor about the cuffs. She met his eyes, “In case of another seizure. We need him staying still and not injuring himself.”
“Gentlemen, please excuse me. I’ll give you a few minutes while I arrange for the dialysis. Lord Beaumont before you leave I’ll need your signature.”
Maxwell carefully moved up and took Drake’s hand. “Hey Buddy, You have us all decked out for you. Just like when we saw the baby pandas. I need you to get better for me. Keep me in line. Seriously. You’re like the glue that keeps us all grounded. Doesn’t put up with all the noble nonsense.” He sniffed and Bastien saw the tears streaking down to the mask over his nose. “And you know you must get better so you can show Bartie all your awesome soccer moves. That was the deal we made. I’ll teach him to dance and you teach him to play football. And we’re about to have a niece to spoil as well. You need to get better so you can help me terrify all her suitors. You know I’m not going to be scary enough without your help. Please Drake, hang in there. I know it’s tough. We just love you brother.” He squeezed his hand before laying it back down and walking out of the room where Bastien heard him sobbing.
Careful of all the cords Bastien stepped up toward the head of the bed and leaned over kissing his forehead though the mask covering his nose and mouth.
Softly Bastien whispered in his ear. “You are the son of my heart. And I love you. Drake, I love you. I need you to get better.” He took his hand taking comfort from feeling the warmth there. He closed his eyes and prayed, prayed for more time, and another chance.

The Party’s Over
Episode 6, one of my faves. Because reasons, as one of my friends used to say. (I think we all know what those reasons are by now. *ahem*)
Now, the funny thing is, I was 16 when this episode first aired and I was sort of rolling my eyes at Janet’s existential crisis. Mainly because I’d been having an ongoing one since about age 4 when I’d sit in the floor and look at baby pictures of myself and cry because I wasn’t a baby anymore. Then I concluded I was asleep and the aging was all one long dream. It wasn’t very convincing, and said crisis got worse at...yeah, age 16 when all the tv shows and stuff had told me that was the turning point and the awkwardness of puberty was supposed to be over. Lies. So, yeah, didn’t really get the big deal about 30. Two years past it, I can look back and go...oh, I get it, now. Sort of.
On a less personal note, George says Ultronians don’t have ages, but his actual age in numbers is mentioned later.
This whole misunderstanding with Carol still nearly makes me pee myself laughing. Also, I used to have a hair clip with fake braids and such that looked a bit like her hairdo.
I really don’t understand this whole thing Janet is doing where she’s pretending she doesn’t want a big deal made about her birthday. She knows George is kind of an idiot when it comes to Earth customs and takes everything literally, yet she’s getting snippy when she thinks she’s getting nothing after repeatedly telling him she doesn’t want anything. From his side, it’s gotta look like the real problem is all the cards, etc, reminding her of something that seems to be upsetting her.
Alien reference...kind of sad considering John Hurt’s recent death. (Sidenote, I’ve got to get crushes on more men closer to my age so that my celeb crushes don’t keep dying.)
Oh! I just remembered that later George had that Ultron virus thing and said Alien was an amazingly accurate film. Further evidence for my “Tyler Is Ultronian” theory, perhaps? He knows about that particular virus, thinks he has it, but has forgotten that even if he did it wouldn’t hurt him. Unless he has a vague memory of losing his powers, and with no powers it would? These are the questions that keep me up at night.
There it is, Piers literally embodying that dating post wherein the guy brags about being a doctor and says that getting older will take him from a young Al Pacino to George Clooney. And see above, re: people I’m attracted to. He’s not wrong, per se, but it’s not universal. And his general attitude can be extremely offputting.
OMG, I just figured out what two words Janet probably whispered. I’m very slow on the uptake.
“If you’re thinking of grabbing me...” Yes, quite often. Despite that tie. But, sometimes, I also think of smacking you upside the head.
(Hilarious thing, the copy I’m watching on youtube has commercials, which are for some reason captioned despite my not turning them on. There is now a random caption stuck to Piers declaring “four snacks in one.” Also, for some reason I can click on it and drag it around the screen. It’s fun.)
I’d really like to be Mrs Raven sometimes. “I’m not coming if that is.” Many times I’ve voiced my complaints privately to mom about who’s invited to a thing I also have to attend, but never to the person’s face. No matter how much they deserved it. (And, no, I don’t mean for petty reasons. I mean general “you’re a douche” reasons.)
Second time where the joke has been made that Piers would be happiest dating a mirror. Sad commentary on him as a person, really.
Ella kills it in this scene in the shop with the understated snark and the reaction faces. And it seems we have another thing in common. People who’ve had my version of devil’s food cake have literally begged for another one. And made inappropriate offers to get it. Granted, I had no interest in said offer from that person, but it was still hilarious.
Wow, Avril managed to not make a bitchy remark about Janet.
So, at this point Mrs Raven’s mom is still out and about. Wonder when she wound up in what is presumably prison?
Not sure if Mrs Raven is saying Dr Crippen on purpose as a joke or if a flub. Happens in two different episodes.
Someone please get this man a dating consultant, this is just sad. Mind you, this is what you get for pestering someone clearly uninterested. And, but, also, just a tiny little note here. “Oh, thank God...I mean, cool. Cool” No, you’re not, sweetie, you’re really not. (Actually, by the end of the whole series, I’m firmly convinced that this is pretty much Piers when no one’s looking. Except with one of the few things he’s actually mentioned enjoying, instead. Golf or bridge, something like that.)
Zoey is “extremely tall. Used to be a model.” *starts practically vibrating in chair* Ooooh, best part coming up!
Janet, Janet, Janet. Your poor alien boyfriend has no concept of sarcasm or playing coy. Why do this?
George is me trying to get out of things with really bad excuses. Can’t defuse the bomb, I have scurvy. A+. She’ll totally buy that. But, dude, stop bragging about your sex life in front of people. Is awkward.
Carol the hooker is back, along with more hilarious misunderstandings. George is totally normal and vanilla. That’s why he just carried an unconscious woman in a nurse’s outfit out of the bathroom, after giving her a birthday surprise. Nothing weird here.
See, with better planning George could have packed Janet a change of clothes and pretended the trip to NY was her present, then after a couple hours of touristy things, back for the party. Boom. He is now best boyfriend. Instead, Janet is stuck living a variation of the pajama nightmare.
Man, when a roach is that big you might as well make a pet of it. I once watched a fairly large one clean it’s antennae. It was almost catlike the way it would tilt its head and run them between its front legs. I was charmed.
Avril...why? Awesome dress, and you’ve clearly got great boobs, but...the jacket? Those shoes. Why? Very few people can pull off sneakers and a nice dress. My sister is one of them. I am not, as I found out when I had to do it for a party due to foot issues. They were sparkly tenny’s and everything, and yet, I failed to look as good as the time sis wore plain, knee-high converse with a frilly dress to a school dance. Avril, we are the awkward people and we must accept it and not try to go alternative with our fashion.
Tyler following a clearly uncomfortable Mrs Raven around reminds me of this weird guy who latched on to me one day in high school after choir practice when I was reading and waiting to be picked up. He decided we should talk, so I humored him, and thereafter he would follow me around and put his arm around me. I said nothing and was even embarrassed when my friend yelled at him to leave me alone in the middle of a crowded hall. Weeks later, he caught me alone, patted me on the head and when I asked him not to, he responded by ruffling my hair and sitting next to me. Took dad forever to answer my pages and get there. Tyler is being that guy. Paints a very dark picture of what he might have done to have his memory erased.
...I think I had the same reaction to the Deadpool bobblehead sis got me for Christmas as Avril did to this party. I, too, am sad.
*flails uselessly* Here it is! Here is the best part!
Zoe...is not tall. Not even a little bit. She is tall like I am tall. We are, in fact, the same height and I am the shortest person in my immediate family. In my whole family, in fact. I have cousins in middle and elementary school who are clearly going to be taller than me. And given the height of the cretin who helped make them, I think my niece and nephew are also going to be taller.
What I’m getting at is that I am a shortarse. And so is Zoe.
And Piers, well, he’s tall but I’ve seen taller. But, he’s still tall. Unlike Zoe. You cannot stand her next to him and say she is extremely tall.
So, what’s the solution, following that adorable thinking face he makes?
Pick her up! It’s brilliant! They’ll never notice she’s dangling almost an entire foot off the floor! Well done, you.
And she wore flats, making the whole thing even worse.
Love Pump. My secondhand embarrassment knows no bounds. No one in the history of ever has called their boyfriend that with any level of seriousness. Why must you hurt me this way?
(I have no acting ability whatsoever, but I’m fairly certain I could pull off a role wherein most of the requirements were “cuddle Hugh Dennis.”)
And this whole thing with Zoe and misreading Pier’s apparently terrible handwriting is beautiful. “Go topless,” is probably exactly the sort of thing he’d ask a girl.
Also, “lonely” and “desperate,” sad but hilarious and definitely spot-on.
Much like Carol reacting to George, I’m really loving how these two play off each other.
You know, Mrs Raven is meant to be frumpy-person dressed up, here, but her make-up’s not half bad. Geraldine McNulty, like Moya Brady, is actually pretty good-looking.
(And, also, Moya Brady in general, with that nose and all, looks a bit like a female Julian Richings, which means that had Avril been less annoying I’d have probably crushed on her a little. Because that? Is a sonnet-worthy nose.)
All the fat jokes about Ella are really not cool, man. I looked up that size 14 evening gown she asks for in the Christmas episode, and that’s about a 12, US. At my smallest that was me, which put me decidedly not on the plus side of the store, but just barely out of the “regular” side because boobs. Which looks to also be a thing with Ella. Pudgy, I’d say, rather than fat. And definitely not to the extent one needs to say that she’d stick out from behind a chair that wide.
Ella’s face is mfw.
It’s just a tiny thing, but when George starts telling them all to jump out at different times, Zoe has this sort of glorious “wtf, this is so awkward” face while everyone else is just generally annoyed because they expected George to do something stupid.
“Oooh, Mr Sunday!”  Calm down, Avril, it wasn’t that good.
George’s sister is 11′4. Maybe Piers should have called her, instead. (Yes, I know, not possible. It was a joke. Because she’s extremely tall.)
And she’s apparently just a shelf-stacker instead of a superhero. Ultron does have mundane jobs, after all.
Janet definitely would have gone full tourist instead of just sitting around eating surprisingly delicious diner food if she’d had a change of clothes.
Eew, Tyler, you don’t just put your hands on people’s thighs without asking unless you’ve been dating awhile.
I’m terrible at math, but I actually sat down and calculated the sandwich to guest ratio. The fairest divide leaves them with 8 each and four left over for Janet and George to split. I was really bored in the shower that day.
Zoe, you beautiful, clueless eejit. I love you. But, c’mon, be fair. If she’s really just 22, and he’s about 37 here, that’s not really old enough to be her dad unless her parents were teen parents.
Love Pimp! Pump! Oh, yeah, the correction totally saved that one. You’d have honestly been better off leaving it.
Arnie is still a total sleazebag, but his first meeting with Janet actually turned out to be really sweet.
George is really bad at surprises, tho.
And Mrs Raven is gonna wake up with Arnie, yet later they don’t seem to know each other. Just how drunk were they?
