Life’s Rediscoveries
Summary: Set years after the movie. Steven finds himself wondering if life would have been different if he’d stayed and raised Elizabeth with J.C. Having discovered through the grapevine of her passing, he reaches out to her daughter and is met with a shocking response.
Steven’s leg bounced as he waited inside the small yet quaint cafe in the small town where J.C. and Elizabeth moved into in Vermont. He’d kept tabs on J.C. after he left, always having been mad at himself for not being as strong as she had been. Strong enough to give having a child time, to be her partner and instead of being so narrow minded, take an introspective look at life and ask if the route he was going was the one he wanted. He should have been strong enough to be the partner she deserved.
It’s been 20 years, 2 failed marriages, one successful career, and countless hours in therapy. And still he wondered what had been of the one he let get away. He’d heard of the company she built and couldn’t have been more proud of her. She did that on her own, a mother...proves she was stronger than him in many ways. And just as he’d heard the good news, the bad reached him too. The deaths of one Dr. Jeff and J.C Cooper had hit him a little harder than he thought it would. He hadn’t been surprised she’d moved on, she above all else deserved to find someone worthy of her. What shocked him was that they pair had left behind Elizabeth, now 23 years old, on her own. He'd reached out a few weeks back offering his condolences for her parents’ passing, feeling very much the asshole remembering how it was J.C. came into custody of Elizabeth.  This made three parents that young woman has lost. So to say he was surprised when she reached out to him in return, inviting him to coffee if he was available. Lucky for them both, he’d been doing some post-retirement traveling. Affording him a pitstop between his current and next destinations.
The thought of leaving crossed his mind when he heard...
“Hey Lizzie! Your usual ok?” The barista asked kindly.
“Yes, please Jimmy,” the young woman answered with a small smile, turning to the seating area eyes searching.
Steven held his newspaper up hoping not be found. Apart from him and a couple of elderly women, there wasn’t anyone in the cafe, so his chances of being “missed” were slim to none. He heard her approach and took one last deep breath and lowered the paper. He was met with a pair of sparkling blue eyes and a kind grin.
“Mr. Buchner?” She inquired, approaching the small table he was sitting in.
Steven stood and almost grinned at how small she still was compared to his tall stature.
“Yes,” he replied kindly, “Elizabeth?”
“Lizzie please,” she said offering her hand to shake.
He took it and shook it, and motioned for the available seat.
“I wasn’t sure if you were going to show up to be honest,” said a nervous Elizabeth.
“Oh?”
“I know you and mom broke up on good terms,” Elizabeth stated evenly, “But still, to meet up with your former partner’s daughter?”
Steven sighed quietly, he’d expected that.
“The thing with J.C. was that you didn’t just not do something,” he said, uncertainty clear in his voice.
Elizabeth laughed at that and said, “I know what you mean. I still remember the one time she thought it was a good idea to fix the sink without dad being home. She said she’d seen him do it before so how hard could it be?”
He grinned sadly at this.
“That had been all well and good except she didn’t expect for the pipe to burst at her barely even touching it!” Elizabeth laughed, “Dad came home to a mess of water, mom drenched from head to toe, and me splish-splashing like this was the best waterpark in town.”
The pair remained quiet for a bit just taking in the other’s presence, one taking finally coming to accept that this life maybe would have been a good thing and the other wondering how her life would have been different if Steven had stayed. She wouldn’t trade her daddy for the world, but she did wonder about the man in her mother’s previous life that had read her the paper when she was little.
“Mom wrote you a letter,” she said, taking an envelope out of her bag.
He looked at her questioningly.
“I found it in her stuff,” Elizabeth stated, “The date is just before my fourth birthday, before mom and dad married. She never mentioned it, but I think this was her way of saying goodbye. I haven’t read it but I thought it fair you have it.”
He took the letter tenderly for her hands, speechless. He’d read it later, but was stunned that this young woman took time from her life to hand this to him personally instead of mailing it, his address was the same, so it made him wonder.
“Why?”
“Why call you all the way out to the sticks for a letter?” She asked with a gentle grin, “You were important to my mom. Even after she married my dad, she missed her friend I think. Dad was a lot of things but big city smarts was never his thing. And I was curious...”
He gave her an inquisitive look.
Elizabeth got this far away look in her eye, “I guess I wanted to meet the man behind the purchase of specific bonds.”
“I..I, uh–”
“Mom didn't know,” she stated, “I only found out when mom’s business partner and I took a look as we went over the business. I’m still in school and nowhere near ready to pick up the reins, but I’m as involved as I can be for the time being.”
Steven had to grin at that, this was J.C.’s way of thinking.
“And I guess I wanted the really meet the man that read me the funnies of the paper,” she finally revealed.
“You remember that?” He asked incredulously.
She nodded with a grin.
“Not bad for a man with zero child experience,” she commended.
Steven blushed at this, he’d not been prepared to be remembered.
“No, you didn’t want to deal with a kid,” she stated, “I can understand that, I'm in business school, I get it.”
This did not give him the relief he didn’t know he was looking for.
“It doesn’t mean I couldn’t have tried,” he replied honestly, “I should have given myself a chance to–”
“Don’t do that,” she halted gently, “You can really work yourself up over nothing thinking about what ifs.”
“It wasn’t nothing!” He anxiously stated, “I’d had a good life with your mother. And got complacent...comfortable.”
“You had your goals and wants,” Elizabeth stated calmly, way too calmly in his opinion for a 23 year old, “It wasn’t your fault mom left the city, it wasn’t your fault that dick did what he wanted with her job.”
“But as her partner, I should have done more,” he stated defeatedly.
Elizabeth reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze.
“You shouldn’t be this calm for a kid,” he said after a moment was spent in silence.
She breathed a chuckle and said, “I lived with mom. I’d go to work with her some days and would spend time at the clinic with my dad. I’ve seen stuff no kid should see but it gave me perspective.”
The pair spent more time talking, coffee and food was eaten as the slate from both ends was cleaned and hope for the future was seen.

Steven Buchner (from 1987's Baby Boom) GIFs again (I know they were previously used in my Janegon vignette). The character does have a dead-on resemblance to Egon, tho.
Just look at him stretch and yawn. LOOK AT HIM!!
I hear a The Weekend song playing in my head (guess which one and I'll mark you as correct in the the form of a reblog or reply in the comments😅)

#12 Cal Downs #14 Long Beach State, #18 Pepperdine
Bears Win Fifth Straight in Three Days
MALIBU - The No. 12 California beach volleyball team ended a three-day stretch of matches with a pair of 3-2 wins over No. 14 Long Beach State and No. 18 Pepperdine Monday afternoon. The Golden Bears have now won five straight matches and three against ranked opponents.
No. 12 Cal 3, No. 14 Long Beach State 2
Cal began its morning in Malibu with a battle with The Beach. The team captain pair of senior Ainsley Radell and fifth-year Ashley Delgado got the Bears on the board first with a 21-19, 21-16 win on court two. It was the sixth-straight win for the pair.
Sophomore Alex Young-Gomez and senior Lexi McKeown were the next to strike with a gritty win on court four to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage. The pair took the first set 21-17, but The Beach answered with a spirited 22-20 win in set two to force a third. The tiebreaker would also go to extra points with Bears coming out on top 19-17.
LBSU took the match on court five to stay alive, but Cal found the clincher on court one with junior Maya Gessner and sophomore Ella Dreibholz earning a three-set win of their own. After splitting the first two frames 21-19, 16-21, the duo dominated the third 15-7 to seal Cal's fourth-straight win.
1. Maya Gessner/Ella Dreibholz (Cal) def. Mari Molina/Christine Deroos (LBSU) - 21-19, 16-21, 15-7
2. Ainsley Radell/Ashley Delgado (Cal) def. Sydney Stevens/Julia Westby (LBSU) - 21-19, 21-16
3. Malia Gementera/Taylor Hagenah (LBSU) def. Sierra Caffo/Liz Waters-Leiga (Cal) - 13-21, 21-16, 15-12
4. Alex Young-Gomez/Lexi Mckeown (Cal) def. Haley Carrington/Holly Jackson (LBSU) - 21-17, 20-22, 19-17
5. Maggie Walters/Natalie Glenn (LBSU) def. Brooke Buchner/Natalie Martin (Cal) - 21-16, 21-19
Exh. Ava Mann/Gia Fisher (Cal) def. Kate Stoughtong/Savannah Lyons (LBSU) - 21-16, 21-18
Order of finish: 2, 4, 5, 1*, 3
                                  No. 12 Cal 3, No. 18 Pepperdine 2
The battle with the host Waves came down to the final match, but once again the Bears got on the board first with McKeown and Young-Gomez earning their fourth-straight sweep on court four 25-23, 21-15.
Pepperdine responded with an impressive win on two where all three sets went to extras. A straight-set win on five gave the Waves a 2-1 lead, putting the Bears in a must-win situation on courts one and three.
After losing its first match of the season earlier in the day, the court three team of junior Liz Waters-Leiga and sophomore Sierra Caffo bounced back with a clutch 21-13, 21-19 victory to keep its team alive. The fans in attendance would get what every beach fan hopes for – a decider on court one.
Gessner and Dreibholz traded punches with the Waves' McKenna Thomas and Lexi McLeod early in the first set but went on a late run to take it 21-15. The second set was a similar story as the Bears led 20-16, but the Pepperdine pair refused to quit and staved off three-straight match points to make it a one-point contest at 20-19. The fourth match-point would go the Bears' way as Gessner and Dreibholz sealed the team's fifth-straight win.
1. Maya Gessner/Ella Dreibholz (Cal) def. McKenna Thomas/Lexi Mcleod (PEPP) - 21-15, 21-19

Peter was probably a class clown who latched onto the more serious Egon for academic help. In return, Peter taught Egon how to live a little bit—he grew his gorgeous curls out and gained experiences outside the classroom.

Tldr: Janine and Egon have a beautiful and rare Jewish love story that was ahead of its time. Thank you fellow shippers for helping to celebrate this.
“Some artists argue that making light of prejudice, or turning purveyors of it into absurdities, robs hatred of power. I’ve been persuaded by that idea, and like many secular types, a Jewish sense of humor is more integral to my identity than any religious observance. It’s also a source of pride. A resilient comic sensibility that finds joy in dark places is one of the greatest Jewish legacies — as is an ability to laugh at ourselves.”
“When a gentile plays a Jew, the results are often more affected, the mannerisms pronounced, which can often mean the difference between someone playing Jewish vs. inhabiting a Jewish character…”
“I never questioned the idea that Jews had been well represented in popular culture until I read Jeremy Dauber’s book “Jewish Comedy: A Serious History” and learned that not one leading character on prime-time television clearly identified as Jewish from 1954 to 1972 and again from 1978 to 1987.”
“How much did it matter that as a boy I saw no Jewish couples on television? I’m not certain — draw your own conclusions about the fact that I married a non-Jew.”
This essay captures a key part of what I adore about the Egon-Janine ship: two Jewish characters getting a chance to be together. And mainstream people dig it!! Like the author, I was a Jewish child who hardly saw this depicted in TV and film.
I think many people don’t realize that Egon and Janine are Jewish, because they don’t look like caricatures of Jewish people that you often see in media. Especially caricatures delivered for laughs. This is the difference between ‘playing Jewish’ aka being over the top versus ‘inhabiting’ a Jewish role.
Janine’s surname, Melnitz, suggests an Ashkenazi (European) Jewish background. Many Polish, Russian, and other Slavic Jewish surnames end in “-itz.” (Think Manischewitz, Saffitz, Wolowitz, etc.) Janine is sassy fashionista, like a Brooklyn-born predecessor to Fran Drescher in The Nanny. Some online articles say that J. Michael Straczynski, a leading writer for The Real Ghostbusters series, even confirmed that Janine is Jewish.
Egon as played by Harold Ramis epitomizes a culturally Jewish character who isn’t acting like an exaggerated Jewish person. Ramis played A LOT of subtly Jewish roles, including: Moe Green in SCTV, Russell Ziskey in Stripes, Steven Buchner in Baby Boom, Harris Stone in Knocked Up, etc. He even played a Hasidic record producer who speaks Yiddish in the 2007 movie Walk Hard.
Ramis spoke at length in many interviews and speeches about how Jewish comedic traditions shaped his sense of humor. That worldview has more to do with depicting a Jewish character than what many people think it means to be Jewish (‘a very special episode’ when someone celebrates Hanukkah, which by the way is a minor holiday). According to Violet Ramis Stiel, her dad acknowledged the visual change from Egon in the ‘84 movie to The Real Ghostbusters like this: “I think we have a ways to go before we get a hunky Jewish cartoon character.”
Ramis and director Ivan Reitman were both Jewish. Reitman’s mother survived the Auschwitz concentration camp. They contributed a Jewish sensibility to Ghostbusters just as much as other actors and writers brought their own points of view.
All this to say, I rarely saw subtle Jewish characters like Egon and Janine growing up. And when they are on screen, they’re the quirky friend, not the hero or love interest. It’s meaningful to see how many people (especially non Jewish people) adore them as individuals and together. It really warms my heart. Thank you for reading!

An interesting interview with Ernie Hudson from 2014. He talks about his disappointment with how Winston’s role was drastically cut in the first Ghostbusters movie compared to the original script. Winston’s backstory was removed and he doesn’t show up until pretty far into the movie.
Hudson doesn’t seem bitter, but he was understandably displeased. He mentioned that director Ivan Reitman said they wanted to give more screen time to Bill Murray. (Another article I read suggests that the Peter-Dana love angle came in as a way to give Murray more of a focus.)
Here’s my two cents: Murray, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd already had history together via TV, movies, and sketch comedy. Ramis said in interviews that he knew how to write in a way that captured Murray’s voice. I think diminishing Winston’s role was not a slight at Ernie Hudson, but instead reflected the writers maximizing Murray’s Peter Venkman. And yet…personally I think Venkman has aged the most poorly as a character.
I think a big factor that makes the Ghostbusters great is that they’re an ensemble. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, but at the end of the day, their interpersonal dynamics make the movie so good. Winston is an integral part of that dynamic imho.
Winston is awesome and I hope we see more of him as the Ghostbusters franchise moves forward.

Lately I’ve been thinking about what happened in the Ghostbusters universe between films 1 and 2. Egon took up work in a lab and Ray had his occult book store. I imagine that they remained close friends. Ray was also doing kids’ birthday parties with Winston, so they all probably met up periodically.
In my head canon, Ray was the spoke that connected everyone. He was a sympathetic ear for Peter to discuss his romantic and professional woes. Ray probably kept in touch with Janine, too.
I could imagine Ray and Egon at the bookstore. Ray gets a phone call; he’s chipper about it. ‘Who was that?’ Egon asks. ‘Just Janine,’ Ray says. Egon tries to act disinterested, but he really wants to know how she’s doing…

Hometown?
I was born in Barnstable Massachusetts. On Cape Cod.
Where are you now?
I reside in North Hollywood.
What's your current project?
Right now I am directing a show for the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2018, called Crunch. You can find us @crunchtheplay. Crunch explores the intimacy and pressures of female friendship, the complexity of looking for justice when there’s no clear place to put blame, and 101 fun and easy ways to cling to heterosexuality by your fingernails.
Why and how did you get into theatre?
I don’t remember ever not being into theater. I played a bumble bee in a stage adaptation of Are you My Mother when I was 4 years old and never stopped. I was heavily involved in the theater program in my high school and I majored in Theater at The University of La Verne.
What is your directing dream project?
This is such a hard question. For classics I would love to direct Woyzeck by George Buchner, it has always fascinated me and I would love to rearrange the scenes to suit my needs. Two of my favorite playwrights are Sarah Kane and Hailey Feiffer, I would love to direct any of their plays.
What kind of theatre excites you?
New theater excites me. Politically charged theater excited me. Theater by and for underrepresented communities excites me. I love to see writers pushing boundaries and delving into subjects that are inspired by today’s society and political climate. Also I love opera.
What do you want to change about theatre today?
I want to see more young people in theater. The new generation is really making large changes and I want them to make theater. I want to see more plays written by women of color produced.
What is your opinion on getting a directing MFA?
I go back and forth on this every day. I’m really not sure. I think I will do it one day but I don’t think it is absolutely necessary.
Who are your theatrical heroes?
Katie Mitchell, Peter Brook, Steven Kent and Bertolt Brecht.
Any advice for directors just starting out?
Apply to Labs! Read way more plays! MEET WRITERS, go to events for playwrights and introduce yourself as a director. Writers want to meet people who will read their work and maybe want to talk about it. Do the Fringe Festival that is closest to you. Take lots of pictures of your shows and always film them if possible. Read Katie Mitchell’s book. See as much theater as you can.
Plugs!
