Tanz der Vampire Costume design
Okay, so this may be an unpopular opinion...
But I actually really dislike the design of Sarah's red ball gown in the Tanzsaal scene.. Hear me out and I'll explain my views and present some other design options for the costume.

So the problem I have with the various designs that I’ve seen is that the dress, to me, reads very 1980′s/90′s does “vampire dress up costume”. Not very historically based and also not well constructed in some instances.. Which is so strange because you have the other Krolock/Herbert/Vampire costumes in the same scene, where you can clearly see the historcal influences in shapes, colours and decorations, and for the most part they are very vell executed.
The style of the dresses are also very out of fashion for the setting of the musical, which I find strange. The Nobel Prize startet in 1895 so we must assume the musical takes place during the turn of the century. The dress designs are in a mid 19th century fashion, which makes them 50years behind the fashion of the time, it's like wearing a 70s wedding dress for you wedding in the 2020's.

The shape of the dresses are very childish, with lots of decoration, like a little girl dressing up as a princess. From a character analysis p.o.v, Sarah is a young woman casting off her childhood and growning into maturity and I would have tought that having a more grown up “sexy” dress was more in the line of her views. And yes you can read into that more, by pointing out “but she is a girl playing a grown up” or “the dress was given to her by Krolock, so he was probably trying to make that point to her”.
But I just don’t like the look of the dress okay, so here are some alternative designs I’ve come up with
My “Tanzsaal” dress design suggestions:
Alternative 1: Late 1870's "Natural Form Era" style

Keeping the decorated girly look, but making it at bit more elegant. Just on top of the shoulders neckline, and elbowlenght beaded sleves like on the "Queen Alexandra" photo. All the drama at the back with a long train, which can be tied up while dancing, but excellent for the draping/trailing effect while Sarah is carried by Krolock. Love the look of the red velvet with the black lace/beadwork. Still a bit behind in fashion style, but more elegant than the mid century fashion.
Alternative 2: Late 1890's style

Streamlined ball gown, with emphasis on the waistline. Low wide neckline, with no sleeves, also a long train. Made of slik statin dip-dyed in various shades of blue-purple-black and decorated with rinestones and tulle to create a starry night look like the Danish design. The alternative most up to date with fashion, according to the setting of the plot.
Alternative 3: "Modern" style

So I have an inkling that the various designers wanted to go for a more modern look on Sarah's dress, to relate more to the audience and fashions now. Which I understand, it just didn't work for me. So my suggestion is a design based on the famous "Portrait of Madame X" which is from 1885, so it is historically accurate but feels very modern in cut and decoration. Instead of the black colour, use a deep red silk satin. Very minimal decoration other than the beaded straps. Maybe some black lining on the skirt, visable when lifted up.

I actually really like and prefer the film costume over the musical version designs. But that style is still behind in the fashion style for the setting.
