Canada's most infamous Nazi these days had an endowment at the University of Alberta. As Jeremy Appel points out, U of A's Chancellor from 1982 to 1986, Peter Savaryn, was a Ukrainian SS veteran. Savaryn co-founded the U of A's "Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies" which has been a centre of fascistic historical revisionism since the 1970s.
The program was an incubation chamber for SS veterans and their offspring and sympathisers. These U of A scholars fought against claims of Ukrainian SS crimes against humanity in the mid-1980s during the Deschenes Commission investigation into Nazi war criminals. The political purpose was to deflect and deny Ukrainian fascism and its role in the Holocaust, while positioning Ukrainian Nationalists as caught between the Nazis and Soviets, instead of being fascist allies and Holocaust collaborators. Their greatest success in Canada was pushing the most extreme interpretation of the 'Holodomor' (Ukraine's 1932-33 famine) as a deliberate genocide against Ukrainians by Stalin and the Soviet Union. This is not to deny the mass deaths in that period, but minimizing of the role of Ukrainian fascists in the Holocaust while accentuating their own victimization is a deliberate political strategy -- one that was about asserting far right intellectual hegemony over the Ukrainian community in Canada as much as possible. As a descendent of Ukrainian-Canadians myself, I'm very aware of how successful this effort has been.
As Nazis, they buried the truth, lied to their children and grandchildren, and advanced a new post-Soviet Ukrainian nationalism on fascist foundations and myths. The U of A's role in this was instrumental.

AUUC('s Edmonton Branch) released a statement on the Volunteer Nazi given a standing ovation in Canadian Parliament, read it
Tumblr media
[x]
transcription after the cut
The Edmonton Branch of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians (AUUC) condemns the honoring of a nazi Ukrainian World War II veteran, a member of the notorious 14th Waffen SS Division "Halychyna", in the House of Commons during the visit of Ukrainian President Zelenskiy last Friday, 22 September, 2023.
Our Association, founded in 1918 in Winnipeg as the Ukrainian Labor Temple Association, has an unblemished record of opposing fascism, in word and deed, before and after WWII, in Canada, in the Ukrainian-Canadian community, and abroad. Our members fought heroically in the Spanish Civil War, on the side of the Republican government, against fascism. They fought for Canada, allied with the Soviet Union, against nazi Germany and fascist Italy in WWII.
It is therefore unbelievable to us, as to most other Canadians, that when the individual in question, Yaroslav Hunka, was introduced in parliament as a Ukrainian veteran of WWII who fought against Russia, no one in attendance, all of whom gave him two standing ovations, realized what this meant. We know exactly what it meant.
Now this shameful spectacle has been publicized to all Canadians, and throughout the world. We welcome this publicization. We hope it will lead to a reckoning. Some steps in this direction have already been taken. The speaker of the House of Commons has resigned. An endowment in the name of Yaroslav Hunka at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, at the University of Alberta, has been returned. We welcome these steps. But they are only first steps. Much more must be done. The problem is greater than simply one nazi, one speaker, and one endowment.
It is estimated that two thousand members of the 14th Waffen SS Division "Halychyna" were allowed into Canada after WWII. Our Association, immediately at that time, publicized and opposed their entry, to our everlasting credit. This figure does not include other nazis and nazi-collaborators, of various nationalities. That means thousands of Yaroslav Hunkas. Several of them went on to occupy prominent and leading positions in certain other Ukrainian-Canadian organizations, in religious institutions, educational institutions, and state institutions. The Canadian state supports, with funding and semi-official recognition, Ukrainian-Canadian organizations that unapologetically honor these nazis. If honoring Yaroslav Hunka in the House of Commons was a shameful act that had to be corrected, then so must all these other cases be corrected.
We therefore call on the Canadian state at all three levels (federal, provincial, municipal) to halt all state funding to all Ukrainian-Canadian organizations which honor any Ukrainian nazis or nazi-collaborators, including especially veterans of the 14th Waffen SS Division "Halychyna", until such time as these organizations explicitly and unequivocally apologize for having done so, severing all connections with all these nazis and nazi-collaborators, in all forms whatsoever.
We call for the removal and dismantling of two monuments to nazi Ukrainians in Edmonton: the monument to the veterans of the 14th Waffen SS Division "Halychyna" located in St. Michael's Cemetery, and the bust of Roman Shukhevych located at the Ukrainian Youth Unity Complex, preferably by their respective property owners, and if not by them, then by state compulsion.
We call on the government of Canada, and on the Liberal Party of Canada which formed the government at the time, to issue official apologies to our Association (the AUUC), in consultation with our Association, for banning it (then named the Ukrainian Labor-Farmer Temple Association) by an order in council in June 1940, seizing its properties, our halls and their contents (furniture, musical instruments, dance costumes, books, etc., most of which were destroyed), and interning our leaders in internment camps, acknowledging this as a terrible miscarriage of justice and act of oppression.
We call on all Canadians, all progressive Canadians, all decent Canadians, all anti-fascist Canadians, individually and through their various organizations, to support us in these calls for justice, by publicizing this statement, and pressuring their political representatives.

1963 AC SHELBY COBRA
1963 AC SHELBY COBRA 4.7-LITRE MARK II ROADSTER  REGISTRATION NO. OYM 28A CHASSIS NO. CSK2116 ENGINE NO. CSX2116
Footnotes
Rightly regarded as one of the all-time great classic sports cars, the muscular, fire-breathing Cobra succeeded in capturing the hearts of enthusiasts like few of its contemporaries. Only 1,000-or-so Cobras of all types were built between 1962 and 1967, but such was the model's enduring popularity that production was resumed in 1982 under the auspices of Brooklands-based Autokraft.
Convinced that a market existed for an inexpensive sports car combining European chassis engineering and American V8 power, Le Mans-winning Texan racing driver Carroll Shelby concocted an unlikely alliance between AC Cars and the Ford Motor Company. The former's Ace provided the simple twin-tube chassis frame - designed by John Tojeiro - into which was persuaded one of Ford's lightweight, small-block V8s. It was discovered that the latter was lighter than the six-cylinder Ford Zephyr unit that AC was using, yet with vastly greater potential. To cope with the projected power increase, the Ace chassis was strengthened with heavier gauge tubing and supplied fitted with four-wheel disc brakes. Weighing a mere 1.5cwt more than a Bristol-engined Ace yet endowed with double the power and torque, the Cobra turned in a breathtaking performance, racing to 60mph in 4.4 seconds and reaching the 'ton' in under 12, exceptional figures by early 1960s standards and none too shabby even today.
The 260ci (4.2-litre) prototype first ran in January 1962, with production commencing later that year. Exclusively for the USA initially, Cobras - minus engines - were sent from England to be finished off by Shelby in California, and it was not until late in 1963 that AC Cars in Thames Ditton got around to building the first fully finished cars to European specification.
After 75 Cobras had been built with the 260ci engine, the more powerful 289ci (4.7-litre) unit was standardised in 1963. Rack-and-pinion steering was the major MkII up-date; then in 1965 a new, stronger, coil-suspended MkIII chassis was introduced to accommodate Ford's 427ci (7.0-litre) V8, an engine that in race trim was capable of producing well in excess of 400bhp. Wider bodywork, extended wheelarch flares and a bigger radiator intake combined to create the definitive - and much copied - Cobra MkIII look. Keeping ahead of the competition on the racetrack had been the spur behind Shelby's adoption of the 427 engine, but some MkIIIs to 'street' specification came with Ford's less powerful 428ci hydraulic-lifter V8.
But for Brian Angliss, the Cobra story would have ended in 1967. The Autokraft boss had built up a business restoring Cobras and supplying parts, and in the early 1980s acquired the rights to the AC name plus a quantity of jigs and tooling from the old Thames Ditton factory. Keeping the overall style of the MkIII, Autokraft produced the MkIV, which was appropriately updated to meet current legislation and powered by a 'Federalised' Ford 5.0-litre V8 engine. Around 480 were built.
Chassis number 'CSX2116' was invoiced to Shelby American on 16th April 1963 and shipped to Los Angeles three days later aboard the 'SS Loch Gowan'. Invoiced on 18th June 1963 to Burton Motors of Sacramento, California, the Cobra was sold new to a local doctor who used it for a few years before giving it to his daughter. She used the car as daily transport for several years before the clutch failed, at which time it was sold to Steve Dangremond of Santa Rosa, California. The Cobra was advertised for sale by Mr Dangremond in late 1977 and bought by Dr Grant Hill of Chotoka, Alberta. Dr Hill fitted Weber carburettors and raced 'CSX2116', eventually trading it to Fred Yule in Portland, Oregon. At that time, the car was still finished in its original colour scheme of dark blue and retained its original black leather interior.
'CSX2116' returned to the UK in the late 1980s and was advertised through Hampson's Ltd, by which time it had been refinished in red and fitted with a full-width roll bar. Subsequent owners in England were Dr Carlos Barbot, Trojan boss Peter Agg and Formula 1 racing driver Rupert Keegan. 'CSX2116' was last restored in 1988, records on file indicating that an extensive mechanical restoration was undertaken at this time. The car still retains its original black leather interior though the Weber carburettors have gone, replaced by an easier to maintain four-barrel Holley. There is considerable additional accompanying documentation including correspondence between previous owners, a copy of the original bill of sale, Shelby American Automobile Club letter of authentication, FIA papers and Swansea V5 registration document. The car has belonged to the current owner since 2006.  Early Cobras are offered for sale only rarely and this example represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a fine example of this classic of Anglo-American sports car design.

Corythosaurus is a genus of hadrosaurid "duck-billed" dinosaur which lived throughout what is now Western North America during the Campanian age of the late cretaceous period some 77 to 75 mya. The first fossil remains of corythosaurus consisting of a near complete skeleton which remarkably included much of the creatures skin and organs was unearthed in 1911 by Barnum Brown in Red Deer River of Alberta Canada. Here Brown would also find a second well preserved specimen in 1914. Using these two specimens Brown would describe, name, and establish the type species, Corythosaurus casuarius, whos name is derived from the Greek korythos or "Corinthian helmet", and means "helmeted lizard". The specific name, casuarius, refers to the cassowary, a bird with a similar skull crest. These two specimens now currently reside at the American Musuem of Natural history. Since then several more corythosaurus remains have been recovered including two complete skeleton which were unfortunately lost on December 6, 1916, when the ship transporting them : the SS Mount Temple, was sank by German merchant raider SMS Möwe during World War 1. Today two species of corythosaurus are considered valid: C. casuarius and C. intermedius. Reaching some 25 to 30ft (7.7 to 9 meters) in length and 5,600 to 7,000lbs (2500 to 3200kgs) in weight, Corthyosaurus is destiguished from other hadrosaurids by its comparatively short skull with a narrow beak and high helmet-like crest. In life corythosaurus would have lived in tight knit herds and fulfilled the niche of mixed general browser feeding upon conifer needles, ferns, seeds, twigs, and fruits.

Red paint vandal who hit 4 churches after residential school graves found gets 3 months
A vandal who threw red paint on four Calgary churches a day after the announced discovery of 182 unmarked residential school graves was motivated by an Indigenous childhood spent in Venezuela's Catholic system, according to an agreed statement of facts.
Sebastian Rodriguez-Huerta was handed a three-month sentence, to be served at home under conditions, followed by nine months probation.
The fourth-year university student had pleaded guilty to hate-motivated mischief.
"The vandalism was motivated by his childhood of growing up in Catholic churches, feeling as though he was lied to and his anger toward the discovery of mass graves and support for the Indigenous community," reads part of the agreed statement of facts....
Rodriguez-Huerta, now 25, was raised in Caracas and moved to Canada as a teenager.
According to submissions made by his lawyer at the sentencing hearing, Rodriguez-Huerta grew up as a practicing Catholic and an Indigenous Venezuelan who felt betrayed by the church.
Progress Alberta head pleads not guilty to vandalism of statue and cemetery
Kinney was charged last year with vandalizing a statue of Roman Shukhevych outside the Ukrainian Youth Unity Complex in north Edmonton in August 2021. The statue of Shukhevych — a Ukrainian nationalist who fought alongside Nazi Germany and has been implicated in massacres of Jews and Poles — was spray painted with the words “Actual Nazi.”
Kinney is also charged with defacing a monument to Ukrainian Second World War dead at St. Michael’s Cemetery, which was painted with the words “Nazi monument” and “14th Waffen SS” around the time of the Shukhevych statue vandalism.
They prosecuted these guys quick, but meanwhile still no arrests in painting the Bagg Street Shul with a swastika last month or at the Beth Sholom Synagogue almost 2 years ago. Really shows what we care about in Canada.

[CBC is Canadian State Funded Media]
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday senior bureaucrats are reviewing the Deschenes Commission report — a 1980s-era independent inquiry that looked at alleged Nazi war criminals in Canada — with an eye to making more of it public. Governor General Mary Simon also said today Rideau Hall is sorry for honouring Peter Savaryn — a former chancellor of the University of Alberta who served in the same Nazi unit as Yaroslav Hunka — with the Order of Canada [in 1987].[...]
The vice-regal office is also examining the Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals previously awarded to Savaryn, who also served as president of the Ukrainian World Congress, a group that represents the Ukrainian diaspora.[...] The first [part of the report], which included recommendations to make it easier to extradite war criminals, was released publicly. The second was marked secret and the names of alleged Nazis in Canada were never released. Jewish groups, including B'nai Brith and the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre (FSWC), have said the second part should be unredacted and disclosed publicly so that Canadians can learn more about the country's shameful history of admitting an untold number of Nazi collaborators after the Second World War.[...]
"There are top public servants looking very carefully into the issue, including digging into the archives," Trudeau told reporters. "We're going to make recommendations."
Reports suggest as many as 2,000 Ukrainian members of Hitler's Waffen-SS were admitted to Canada after the war — after some British prodding. The commission said the number is likely lower than that.[...]
Quebec Liberal MP Anthony Housefather said it's a delicate issue because the government doesn't want to "bring pain to a lot of Eastern European communities." Hunka, for example, has framed his war service as a fight for Ukrainian independence. The unit he fought for, the 1st Galician division, is also memorialized by Ukrainian expatriate groups at different sites across the country.[...]
The Deschenes report has also concluded that allegations of war crimes committed by this division have "never been substantiated."
That finding conflicts with what the post-war, Allies-led Nuremberg trials concluded about SS units like that one.[...]
"We have to recognize we have a horrible past with Nazi war criminals. We opened our country to people after the war in a way that made it easier to come if you were a Nazi than if you were a Jew," Housefather said.[...]
Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman, the party's deputy leader, said Canadians need to know more about the country's "dark history" of "letting Nazis through the door to live here in peace and security." Lantsman represents the Toronto-area riding of Thornhill, a riding with one of the country's largest Jewish communities. In an interview with CBC News, Lantsman said the party supports revisiting the Deschenes report and its findings in some way.[...]
Asked if it might be too painful for some communities to revisit alleged Second World War-era crimes, Lantsman said "history is painful but that doesn't mean we don't need to reckon with it."[...]
Quebec Conservative MP Gérard Deltell, Poilievre's environment critic, said Wednesday he's not open to revisiting the issue right now.[...]
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he supports releasing the commission's report.
