Hello Y'all. While digging through the unsorted treasure chests at Revilla Grooves I pulled a copy of this 1968 Little Eva Harris - "Get Ready - Uptight" b/w "Mr. Everything" (Spring Records cat. SK704). And yes, this is the same Little Eva of "The Loco-Motion" fame. This amazing two-sider has a pounding, funky mash-up of "Get Ready" and "Uptight" on the A-side. Although Ms Harris' vocals are perfect the drumming on this track is incredible. On the B-side is powerful Soul song filled with emotional vocals, a spirited chorus, and the band sounds like it is on the edge of exploding. Sticking with Spring, I picked up two more two-siders. Richard Barbary - "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" b/w "Get Right" keeps the same late 60's Soul meets Funk groove going. One of my most hated beats in a song is a marching beat and they are smart enough to avoid it opting for a heavy 4/4 into a funk groove. The flip continues the head nodding feel with shared vocals with deeper compliment that launches into a celebratory chorus. Leroy Randolph - "(I Have Fallen Into) The Tender Trap" b/w "Good to the Last Drop" The A-side is a tender ballad with an almost Christmas feel from the piano and backing that sounds like the bass is singing HO HO HO. On the flip is where the power is. Opening with a very cool off beat break the song pounds into a Soul vocal over a moving groove that pauses at the choruses but eventually brings back the break. Mr Randolph's vocals rides above it all with a positive and exciting smile in his vocal. Day 3: #mayvinylchallenge :  Favorite Spring Record While a spring record is mainly subjective, let's lay on this plastic picnic blanket and hash it out, alright? Instead of bringing a basket fit for a smarter-than-average bear, I went with Scritti Politti's 1985 classic, "Cupid & Psyche 85". Initially a Leftist Post Punk outfit, Scritti Politti's sound over time developed into an innovative style of sophisticated pop.  This is clearly shown in Cupid & Psyche 85, whose sounds, textures and innovative use of sampling and drum programming (only seen primarily in hip hop at the same) took the band further from their original traditional post punk style.  With production from mainstay band leader Green Gartside and Arif Mardin, tracks like "A Perfect Way" "Hypnotize" "Wood Beez (Pray like Aretha Franklin)" and "Absolute" ooze mid-80s for sure.  But if that ain't your schmaltz, you can at least marvel in the fact that this record possibly was the gateway to said sound.  For that...worth its weight in synthy digital gold. Released on June 10, 1985, the record literally gets released in the spring, just in the nick of time.  So, not only is it a technical spring record, but this just brings good vibes through and through... ...if you dig that sort of thing.
