The increasing importance of sponsorship with regards to the business of sport and the sponsorship framework.
As the sports industry continues to evolve and grow, it is equally important that sponsorship increases within the sports business. Sponsorship is an “investment, in cash or kind, in an activity, in return for access to the exploitable commercial potential associated with the activity” (O’Reilly, N Lafrance Horning, D 2013). Sport is an industry that contains high expenses as the businesses are always trying to build on the fan experience and make it greater. Sponsorship is becoming more important as the game relies more heavily on financial gain. In return for the money a sports organisation receives, the sponsoring organisation receives brand promotion through the use of signage, media advertisements, logo placements and or naming rights.
Sports sponsorship can be put in framework and has a process of four key stages. The first step is the foundation, a strong foundation has the inventory of assets, different platforms and a marketing plan. Following this in the second step is customisation, where you choose the specific sponsor, targeting directly to them and develop a sponsorship plan as a result of this. The third step is realisation: this is when the sponsorship plan is implemented and when the negotiation or sales takes place. The final step to the framework is the co-activation phase where the review takes place, following which there will be an outcome where the parties decide to renew their sponsorship or look for another business to replace them with.
Sponsorship allows the business of sport to run on a profit, in 2015 the Trans-Tasman Business Circle estimated that New Zealand estimated ranging between 20 to 35 million dollars of loss revenue at the elite and grassroots level of sport if sponsorship were removed. This would impact sport significantly due to monetary and ability to host major sporting events in the future. SportsConnect say “Traditional sponsorship is dead. Brands must build rich, emotional connections with codes and fans” (Routley, A 2015). Sports New Zealand with help from SportsConnect realised without heart and passion there is no sport, so they decided that all of their sponsorship partners would be meaningful and mutually beneficial to both parties. Their sponsorships allow Sports New Zealand to run on a profit to accumulate income resulting in new players, facility upgrades and technology to enhance the experience of the viewer.
