Wishing there were full-length audiobooks of your Star Trek novels... I know there's one of Dark Mirror, but apparently it's really abridged. I'm wondering just how much of the story was compressed into three hours. I know there's nothing you can do about it, but still...
At least I've still got my signed hard copy from when I got to meet you two at Hal-con a few years back.
Well, the Spock's World one is really abridged, yeah, because I was the one who did the abridging.
Those were the very, very early days of audiobooks, and Upper Management hadn't yet fully wrapped its brains around the virtue of letting such things run to full length. (i.e., they weren't sure they could reliably make money out of it.) So when Management came to me and told me that the SW audiobook could only be [X] script pages long, I knew immediately what that was going to require. It meant losing half the contents of the book.
I took an experimental run at doing this selectively, by removing half of every chapter in intensive line-edits. But I quickly found there was simply no way to make this work both structurally and dramatically. So, with the heaviest heart you can imagine, I deleted all the backstory-of-Vulcan material and got on with whittling the "present day" material down to size and adapting it as audio. Yeah, the saying is that when writing you've sometimes got to "kill your darlings," but I don't think I've ever killed so many of them in such a short time. The memory still aches a bit in cold weather.
Anyway, I'm glad you got your book signed! And that we got to meet. Hal-Con was a lot of fun: @petermorwood and I want to do another one some time. (And it's always going to be interesting for me to visit a place where locals speak disparagingly of lobster as something they got too much of in school lunches. I like lobster.) :)

I will never get tired of Vulcans quietly going to extremes to perform acts of service and devotion for the people they care about

When I saw this scene in Star Trek: Picard, in the back of my mind I was imagining what it would be like to read this book, and now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure I was imagining it as it would read if it was, like, a sequel to Spock's World somehow?
Which of course essentially means: as if @dianeduane wrote this book. Duane's Spock voice is so quintessentially Spock, just in text instead of on screen... this is the Spock of my headcanon and has been for decades.

This is a book recommendation Tumblr, so, usually there’s no hemming and hawing going on (except for when there may be extreme things in the book). But, I will start out this recommendation with the fact that, for some reason, it was harder than usual for me to get into this book. Possibly because the Vulcan chapters vs. the Enterprise chapters are quite different voices. But, that didn’t last long. And, once I got used to the switching I even tried to guess what the points of the Vulcan history chapters were.
The story at its basics is that Vulcan is going to have a referendum on whether or not they will secede from the Federation. Starfleet and the Federation don’t want that to happen. A very loud bunch on Vulcan want it to happen. Not surprisingly Spock, his father Sarek, and the crew of the Enterprise are stuck in the middle. In addition, the ‘big three’ Spock, McCoy and Kirk have to give speeches for or against the secession. And, the part that made me most intrigued was that Sarek had to give a speech on why Vulcan ‘should’ leave the Federation. When that twist came up, I was just stunned, and the writing of that part of the book was so much fun to read.
So, I may have gotten into it slowly, but, it quickly became an engrossing book which is soooo not Canon anymore, heh, but still a really really fun read.

I think we should steal some of Vulcan’s political customs and allow people to bite politicians who say idiotic and clearly incorrect things.

I’m currently reading Spock’s World (in a delightful miscommunication I got two first editions for Christmas I’m wondering if I could mail one to you for you to sign?) and I’m absolutely weeping at Sarek and Amanda’s story. You made Sarek as I always understood him and Amanda just as fierce as she should be. “There is nothing little about my husband” AMANDA!!! anyway thank you for this book I’m crying real tears.
It's kind of you to ask for a signature! But we're only sending autographed books outbound at the moment (on books from Signed Books Direct); we've had losses when returning other people's books, and I don't feel happy about having them sent here any more. So sorry. (I am working on getting bookplates made, though, and those I won't mind sending to people.)
I'm glad Sarek and Amanda worked for you. In their case (and also when working with Peter Parker and M.J.), I have to say that being a married-woman writer has helped... and being married to @petermorwood, even more. :)
Anyway, thanks!
