This new city builder allows players to play as Spider-Man in a city of their own making.

Swing, Swing… oh look traffic is congested.

If you're as old as me, you might remember playing Sim City and having your heart filled with glee when you realised your city could have its very own superhero. Your nameless hero would fly through the city fighting crime with is laser eyes and destroying the odd building in the process.

Cities Spiderlines, a collaboration between Insomniac Games and Colossal Order, is a game set to make me relive my childhood and then some.

Priced at a comfortable $50AUD, the game is almost a carbon copy clone of Cities Skylines 2 with the incredibly fun addition of letting you have your own Spider-Man and even letting you shrink down and take control of the web slinger to fight crime.

First unlocked in-game at milestone 15, opening up the police tab of your building menu, you will see a rather unflattering looking apartment building. Immediately after being placed you will see New York City's resident wall crawler climb out of a window and start patrolling and I have to say, it's an absolute treat.

If you're as bad at managing the happiness and welfare of your little sim people as I am, Spidey will have no shortage of crime to fight as he swings from skyscraper to skyscraper. 

He can even fight crime off in the suburbs, and in a very funny move if he fights a crime in an area with no tall buildings to swing off you can see him hail a taxi or hop on a bus to make his way back into the city. If you don't have any public transport available for him to use, he begins a very long walk.

Now this new feature is fun enough already but where it gets even better is when you jump into Spidey's shoes (spandex boots?) and start slinging on your own. As far as I can tell this works exactly how it does in the Spider-Man 2 game on PS5, right down to the combat, so a controller is recommended but they have done a pretty good job at porting this portion of the game to mouse and keyboard.

At the moment there are no supervillains for Spidey to fight, something I'm eager to see in some future DLC and personally I think it would be cool to see him helping out during natural disasters, but there's still more than enough here to justify the price tag, considering you're essentially getting all of Cities Skylines 2 with the added bonus of Spider-Man.

The game released December 1st on Windows and Playstation 5 and you can find it on the Steam store and PS store respectively.

As someone that recently completed Spider-Man 2 and spending all his free time playing Cities Skylines 2, I cannot wait to get my hands on this game.

why do basically all the spiders who bite spider-man and related spider-themed superheroes at the start of their power-getting have to get killed. also why do they always make a beeline (or. spiderline i guess) for somebodys skin to bite. thats not realistic at all spiders dont just crawl around until they find People Hand and then go “oh shit!!! time to inject expensive-to-produce venom that i have limited quantities of and is supposed to be used for paralyzing prey, which i need, for eating, far moreso than i need to temporarily annoy this much larger creature who i am in no danger from currently and who i probably dont even recognize as anything more than a warm squishy tree or something”

what im saying is that a franchise themed around Spider Heroes is weirdly vilifying to actual real spiders just living their little lives :^/ spiders man should be a spiders fan. and love and appreciate spiders
