Everything Everything on how road-rage icon Ronnie Pickering and late stage capitalism inspired their new album
'It's a state of the nation address that reflects the human cost and the psychological cost of a lot of things that we live underneath,' says frontman Jonathan Higgs.
By Nick Reilly on Rolling Stone
Tumblr media
As Everything Everything gear up to release their new album Mountainhead, the Manchester group have told Rolling Stone UK how it’s a state-of-the-nation record that takes unlikely inspiration from, err, Ronnie Pickering.
Yes, you heard that correctly. The Hull man who went viral after screaming ‘D’YER KNOW OOO I AM?’ in a bout of road rage back in 2014 has proved to be an influence on ‘The End Of The Contender’ – one of the album’s standout tracks.
“It’s not representative of the whole album, but it *is* in there,” frontman Jonathan Higgs tells Rolling Stone UK.
“I’ve definitely always been drawn to trying to write about outsiders and groups of people that have been dropped by wider society, for want of a better word. Ronnie was a good example of that, because it was an extremely amusing moment, but the more I looked into it I thought it was quite a poignant tale of where men of a certain age found themselves in the early 2010s. His sort of impotent rage was a good emblem of that.”
While Pickering isn’t directly named and instead acts as subtle influence, Higgs says that wasn’t *always* the case.
“There was a previous song where the chorus was literally I’M RONNIE PICKERING over and over, but the guys weren’t quite so keen on that one! This is more of a subtle way around the subject.”
But it does, however, feed into the overarching narrative of their new record.
“It’s a sort of thinly veiled, satirical look at the current state of late stage capitalism and what it’s like to live in the West and, more specifically, the UK after 15 years of Tory rule,” Higgs explains.
“It’s a state of the nation address that reflects the human cost and the psychological cost of a lot of things that we live underneath. It really explores that, rather than going into the nuts and bolts of the system.”
It’s a hifalutin concept typical of the band who, on their last album Raw Data Feel, used AI software to create some of the record’s lyrics, after feeding it with four eclectic sources of literature – including the terms and conditions of LinkedIn and 100,000 comments from the annals of contentious message-board site 4Chan.
This time around, they say that some of the record’s darkness comes from analysing the ill-fated 44 day reign of Liz Truss as Prime Minister.
“It’s like a trope of Greek drama isn’t it?,” explains keyboardist and bassist Jeremy Pritchard.
“It’s Hubris, going all the way to the top spot, but you can’t stay there. That itself is always going to be interesting isn’t it?”
Politics aside however, it’s a record that has the band’s unmistakeable unpredictability and art-pop spirit coursing through its veins.
“In the last two records, we’ve tried – with increasing success – to use the signature aspect of John’s voice more sparingly,” explains Pritchard.
“That means it has more power and more poignance when it is deployed.”
And seven albums into their career, they’re not disappearing anytime soon.
“There’s absolutely no reason we’d split up,” says Higgs.
“We’re doing the best job in the world, and we like each other and people seem to like what we do. There’s no pressure on us to destroy ourselves. We think we’re doing good stuff and we’re always excited about doing more stuff.”
Or, as with most things in life, there’s a Simpsons analogy at hand…
“There’s that episode where Mr Burns is diagnosed as having every illness. A perfect balance which has meant that he’s lived to the age of 104,” says Pritchard.
And in a way, I think there’s something like that going on with us….

For the week of 15 April 2019
Quick Bits:
Amazing Spider-Man #19.HU is worth it for the amazing artwork from Chris Bachalo, Wayne Faucher, Livesay, Jaime Mendoza, Victor Olazaba, Tim Townsend, Al Vey, and Erick Arciniega alone. Bachalo’s Lizard is one of my favourite takes on the character and the art in this issue is fantastic.

Aquaman #47 concludes “Unspoken Water” from Kelly Sue DeConnick, Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles. There are some interesting beats regarding sacrifice as “Andy” and the old gods confront Namma. There are still questions remaining, but it looks like we’re going to get answers next issue.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Assassin Nation #2 is as exciting and action packed as the first issue, with more balls out action and violence from Kyle Starks, Erica Henderson, and Deron Bennett, even as it takes a bit of a breather as the assassins share tales of their first kills. Henderson’s art here is spectacular.

Avengers: No Road Home #10 gets very meta for the conclusion from Mark Waid, Jim Zub, Al Ewing, Sean Izaakse, Marcio Menyz, Erick Arciniega, and Joe Sabino as the Vision confronts Nyx in “The House of Ideas”. Seems like this was a stealth 80th anniversary of Marvel celebration after all, even with a nod to Vision’s roots as being constructed out of the original Human Torch. Phenomenal artwork from Izaakse, Menyz, and Arciniega. This issue is packed with characters, unique designs, and layouts, and it’s just gorgeous. Also, some interesting set ups for things to come and possibly a last drink with Rocket Raccoon. This comic is just pure joy.

Tumblr media
Batman #69 brings “Knightmares” to an end as Bats figures out what’s been going on in this tale from Tom King, Yanick Paquette, Nathan Fairbairn, and Clayton Cowles. It’s interesting, but you’ve kind of got to wonder about a Batman that potentially can’t love. Also, Thomas Wayne has a fight with a naked Bane. So, that’s a thing that happened.

Tumblr media
Black Badge #9 starts out with a daring rescue attempt out of East Germany from an old Black Badge team, then picks up in the present with the current scouts being held at some kind of day camp by way of The Prisoner. Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, and Jim Campbell are doing some very interesting things here.

Bloodborne #11 is an almost completely silent issue, as Eileen the Crow experiences...something. It’s trippy with astounding artwork from Piotr Kowalski and Brad Simpson.

Calamity Kate #2 brings the rivalry between Kate and Javelin to the fore, as the latter monster hunter looks to be stealing Kate’s limelight and monster kills. Interesting character development from Magdalene Visaggio and the art from Corin Howell and Valentina Pinto is wonderful, great action and monster designs.

Gideon Falls #12 begins a new arc in “The Laughing Man” as we find out that the alternate realities are much broader than we thought. There isn’t just two and “Norton” appears to be cutting a swath across them. Gorgeous artwork from Andrea Sorrentino and Dave Stewart, especially as it goes across the old American West and a steampunk Gideon Falls.

Guardians of the Galaxy #4 hints at something pretty big going on with Rocket Raccoon, but the major part of this issue is getting Gamora back into the fold as they’re confronted by the Dark Guardians. Geoff Shaw and David Curiel deliver some incredible action sequences.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Incursion #3 gives us the origin of Scyntilla and Imperatrix Virago as things are looking particularly bleak for Gilad and the Geomancer. Great character work from Alex Paknadel here, especially as the set up for the finale is looking pretty grim.

Justice League #22 rewrites the history of the multiverse, as James Tynion IV, Francis Manapul, and Tom Napolitano reveal the origins of Perpetua and her children, the creation of the multiverse, and the conflict that created the Source Wall. Very interesting stuff with gorgeous artwork from Manapul.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Little Bird #2 delivers on the promise of the first issue, as Darcy Van Poelgeest, Ian Bertram, Matt Hollingsworth, and Aditya Bidikar tell one hell of a captivating story of loss, rebirth, and resistance against crushing oppression. The artwork from Bertram and Hollingsworth is incredible.

Magnificent Ms. Marvel #2 investigates Kamala’s parents melting into the ground. Saladin Ahmed, Minkyu Jung, Juan Vlasco, Ian Herring, and Joe Caramagna are continuing to do a wonderful job here, making their own take different from what came before, but not drastically so, capturing the heart and interpersonal relationships that were a hallmark of the previous series.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Mary Shelley: Monster Hunter #1 begins with an interesting twist on the known tale of the genesis of Frankenstein as a secret memoir is discovered in Mary Shelley’s home detailing what “actually” happened. It’s a good start from Adam Glass, Olivia Cuartero-Briggs, Hayden Sherman, and Sal Cipriano. The art from Sherman also transcends his own usual great work with some very interesting approaches, particularly the grey washes of the opening scene.

Middlewest #6 gives us a look inside Abel’s memories, seeing a bit of his parents and the brief period of time that he was able to calm his father’s rages. Gorgeous artwork from Jorge Corona and Jean-Francois Beaulieu continue to make this unmissable.

Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #4 takes off in a different direction as “our” Peter Cannon is knocked into a reality that looks like Eddie Campbell’s Alec. Kieron Gillen, Caspar Wijngaard, Mary Safro, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou are doing something very interesting with this series as they continue to play with form and structure.

Rumble #11 returns from the trade break with “First Knight” that looks like a single issue story that will be seeding what’s coming through this next arc. Phenomenal artwork as always from David Rubín and Dave Stewart.

Spider-Man: Life Story #2 moves on to the 70s and it becomes apparent that this series isn’t just looking at Peter’s history through the lens of natural progression from the 60s, but crafting a tale that reinterprets events and how they played out in new and interesting ways. It’s really quite good. Chip Zdarsky, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessy, Frank D’Armata, and Travis Lanham are all at the top of their game. Especially delivering a Clone Saga that cuts a lot deeper than original.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Stronghold #3 again turns everything on its ear as we’re left wondering further whether or not there actually is any “good guy” in this series. Phil Hester, Ryan Kelly, Dee Cunniffe, and Simon Bowland are telling one hell of a great story here, with some interesting twists and a few “holy crap” moments, with some incredible artwork. Damn good stuff.

Transformers #3 has this series growing on me. I’m still not seeing anything radically different from previous incarnations to warrant “Bold New Era”, but this is entertaining as the mystery deepens and we get a hint of how Cybertron has been operating. Also, a nice bit of humour. Great art from Angel Hernandez, Cachét Whitman, and Joana Lafuente.

West Coast Avengers #10 concludes what has been one of the most fun series from Marvel in years with a story from Kelly Thompson, Moy R., Tríona Farrell, and Joe Caramagna. Upbeat and full of action and humour, this series has been a breath of fresh air in a world populated by so much darkness. It’s a shame to see it end, but it has been wonderful to have it while it’s been here.

Xena: Warrior Princess #1 kicks off this new volume from Vita Ayala, Olympia Sweetman, Rebecca Nalty, and Ariana Maher nicely with the set-up of a village forced to give up their kids to their patron Discord. Gabrielle telling other myths to the kids is a great bit of storytelling.

X-O Manowar #26 concludes the series, with a bit of housekeeping for a couple of hanging threads, but otherwise a great bit of character reflection from Matt Kindt, Tomás Giorello, Isaac Goodheart, Diego Rodriguez, Andrew Dalhouse, and Dave Sharpe. This has been a great series, building greatly on Aric’s character and delivering some amazing stories.

This 3-part article covers history, distances, attractions and facilities for the Strzelecki Track and the areas around Innamincka, and is fourth in a series of articles covering great outback tracks of South Australia, the others being:
Crossing the Simpson Desert
Travelling the Oodnadatta Track and Old Ghan Railway
The Birdsville Track
The first part of this topic is a little long, if you want to skip the history and get travel tips and distances, go to part 2.
Like the previous articles, this trek involves another amble into the South Australian desert… but this time with a twist.
At the end there is water and usually plenty of it. The Cooper Creek meanders into South Australia from Queensland where it is fed from cyclonic rains that often soak the catchment areas during summer. In times of drought the flow will stop but the creek is so deep in spots that permanent waterholes exist along its course. A brilliant example of this is the Cullyamurra waterhole to the east of Innamincka, a broad and long stretch of water providing some of the best camping opportunities in the area.
However, don’t lose sight of the fact that getting there involves considerable desert travel with all the planning and preparation normally required for a trip into harsh and isolated areas.
As with other desert treks in South Australia, rain can make roads quickly impassable and summer temperatures are mind boggling. Travel in the cooler months is definitely the key to success and enjoyment with the risk of rain and high temperatures greatly reduced.
The South Australian government is currently considering sealing the Strzelecki Track and a sealed road from Queensland is not too far away, so if you want the true outback experience don’t wait too long to get out there.
This area is in the middle of the Cooper Basin gas and oil fields with exploration and wells radiating out from the processing, maintenance and administrative centre of Moomba, thus the motivation for an all weather road to cater for the considerable traffic, including many trucks, that travel from Adelaide to Moomba. Moomba is a closed town, only accessible to workers, but the small township of Innamincka, on the banks of Cooper Creek, provides a great outback pub, general store, fuel and is the administrative centre for the Innamincka Regional Reserve that covers 1.3 million hectares of land.
Not a national park, the reserve aims to support mining, pastoral and tourist activities allowing appropriate access for each without overly restricting any of these pursuits. Established in 1988 and being the first reserve of its type in Australia, it seems to have worked successfully for all concerned with travellers having access to many areas along the creek, the very significant Burke and Wills sites and tracks leading to many areas further afield.
“The South Australian government is currently considering sealing the Strzelecki Track”
Other than in the town common, camping in the reserve requires a Desert Parks Pass. These can be purchased from the reserve headquarters or the Trading Post in Innamincka. However, I recommend purchasing before leaving as, although quite expensive ($150 at time of writing), the pass provides comprehensive information and maps of the area that are invaluable for trip planning and is valid for 12 months (purchase from RAA offices or on the National Parks SA website).
With much of Australia’s early European heritage coming from the forced work of convicts, it is perhaps not so unusual that what we now know as the Strzelecki Track came to prominence thanks to the mis-guided efforts of a cattle thief.
In 1870 Harry Redford, later immortalized as “Captain Starlight” in the film Robbery Under Arms, decided that a mob of cattle were better in his hands than those of their Queensland owners. But where do you take them? His answer was to drove them south, where he sold them at Blanchewater for a reputed $10000. Although not the first to follow this route, Harry unwittingly demonstrated that this was a viable and quicker route to market for the inland pastoralists. In the end Harry’s venture came unstuck with him being arrested in 1872 and sent to court.
But the story does not end there. The judge, so impressed with Harry’s droving skills and with the appreciation that he had performed a great service to pastoralists, let him off and he continued life as a highly respected drover. Who says crime doesn’t pay.
While painstakingly pushing his cattle south, Harry Redford could not have imagined the scene today. A wide, well maintained dirt road stretches from Lyndhurst in the south to Innamincka in the north. The drover has given way to massive multiple trailer road trains carrying stock and mining supplies, drilling rigs and a whole range of other mining paraphernalia. In the cooler months 4WD’s, camper trailers and even caravans are a common sight as people head to the Cooper to camp, relax, fish and visit a range of historic sites. In dry conditions the track is suitable for a well maintained conventional vehicle but accessing some of the camp sites along the creek does require a high clearance vehicle.
History
When Harry Redford made his move south, providing water for the cattle was a major concern.
From central Queensland water courses that eventually led into the Cooper were followed. Near what is now Innamincka, he came across the Strzelecki Creek, an overflow from the Cooper that weaves its way south to Lake Blanche. The existence of this creek was confirmed by explorer Charles Sturt in 1845 on one of his treks to find the fabled “inland sea”, and named it after another explorer and scientist, Polish born Paul Edmund de Strzelecki. Following Sturt’s discoveries, in November 1845 Cooper’s Creek was named after the South Australian Chief Justice, Sir Charles Cooper.
The first recorded movement of animals along this route was undertaken in 1867 when John Conrick moved 200 horses from a station near Quilpie in Queensland to Kapunda in South Australia. Despite the harsh conditions and times of extreme drought, stations were established along the track. At the time the area around Coongie Lakes was seen as particularly promising due to the large amounts of water in the river and lake system.
So mesmerised were they that in the mid-1870’s Norman and Hector Wilson established a station and named it “Land of Promise”. The establishment of this station however had a much more sinister side.
Local indigenous groups, the Yandruwandha and Yawarrawarrka, were seen as trouble by the station manager. They are believed to have been constantly harassed and many of the women stolen, eventually leading to retaliation resulting in the spearing of two stockmen. In a rage, the manager went about systematically killing all the indigenous people he could find.
The nearby Lake Massacre is said to be named after this event. Any remaining aborigines quickly left the area, never to return.
Like the Birdsville Track further to the west, the Strzelecki suffered from extreme droughts and became impassable at times, not from flooding but from massive sand drifts.
“The nearby Lake Massacre is said to be named after this event”
The Cobbler Sandhills, about half way between Lyndhurst and Innamincka were particularly troublesome, building to such a massive size that in the early 1930’s the route was rarely used. Other than station homesteads, there was no settlement along the track and waterholes in the creeks were the only source of water. A few bores were drilled along the southern part of the track with Montecollina Bore still existing on the northern edge of The Cobbler.
On the southern section of the track, before reaching The Cobbler, you will come across the ruins of the historic Blanchewater homestead.
It was this homestead, the most northerly in the region at the time, that the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition was attempting to reach when both Burke and Wills died on the banks of the Cooper. By the 1890’s the wealthy pastoralist, Thomas Elder owned Blanchewater and it became famous for the quality of horses bred there. Many of these were purchased by Cobb & Co. to pull their coaches that were opening up travel to many outback areas.
The reputation for breeding excellent horses travelled widely, with the Indian Army being a regular customer. At its peak the station ran up to 20000 horses.
By the late 1800’s Adelaide had developed excellent stock markets (the animal kind), well regarded by inland pastoralists and the market of choice for selling their stock.
The Old Ghan Railway had been established and passed through the southern ends of both the Strzelecki and Birdsville Tracks, making rail transport available for the rest of the trip to Adelaide. As traffic built up it was clear that a settlement was required, with an area on the banks of the Cooper Creek being established. Originally called Hopetoun after the Governor of Victoria, this name was short lived.
There was one survivor of the Burke and Wills expedition, John King. His survival was due entirely to assistance from local aboriginals and in gratitude the Government had allocated land to them, known as Innamincka.
It was this name that people wished maintained and it was duly changed. Although it developed slowly, a hotel, customs house and homes developed and soon the Australian Inland Mission established the Elizabeth Symon Nursing Home, providing medical services near and far.
However, by the mid 1950’s, Innamincka had all but disappeared. The imposing stone nursing home was now a crumbling shell and very few people called the town home. But soon all was to change. The Cooper Basin oil and gas field discovery was just around the corner, bringing new life to the region. From the first hydrocarbon discovery in 1963, the area has been transformed with a maze of tracks, wells and pipelines to ensure our insatiable thirst for oil and gas is met. One of the earliest developers was SANTOS (South Australian & Northern Territory Oil Search), a company whose name is now synonymous with development in the area. Follow this link for an extremely comprehensive history of oil and gas search in the Cooper Basin.
“There was one survivor of the Burke and Wills expedition”
The area is also rich in Aboriginal history but, as previously explained, initial contact with the European settlers was fraught with difficulty. They were rightly very suspicious of the incursion of pastoralists onto their land.
Perhaps these suspicions were further strengthened by the arrival of missionaries in a number of desert areas who, no doubt in good faith, attempted to convert the aboriginal people to Christianity and have them adopt a European lifestyle. At the same time pastoralism was rapidly expanding with many leases being granted in the area most of which eventually ended up in the hands of Sir Sidney Kidman. With these incursions the fate of the local people was sealed.
Although destroying much of the native culture, at least the pastoralists provided some work, especially for the men, and the legendary skill of the aboriginal drover developed.
That’s a little of the tracks history, check out part 2 to find out how to get there and detailed information on the towns you will see along the way.

Hurricane Dorian Update: Florida to Escape Storm’s Full Fury
Florida may not be preparing for landfall of a powerful tropical cyclone, but Hurricane Dorian’s impact is still expected to be considerable on the state’s east coast as it grows in size. According to the office of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, he is receiving constant updates from Division of Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz and State Meteorologist Amy Godsey. A number of evacuation orders have been issued by government officials in Florida: • Brevard County – mandatory for all zones • Clay County – mandatory for Zones A and B, low-lying areas, and manufactured homes • Duval County – mandatory for Zones A and B and Huguenot and Hanna parks • Flagler County – mandatory for all zones • Glades County – voluntary • Hendry County – voluntary • Highlands County – voluntary • Indian River County – mandatory for barrier islands and all areas east of U.S. Highway 1 • Martin County – mandatory for Zones A and B • Nassau County – mandatory for all zones • Okeechobee County - voluntary • Palm Beach County – mandatory for Zones A and B • Putnam County – mandatory for Zone A • Seminole County – voluntary • St. Johns County – mandatory for Zones A and B • St. Lucie County – mandatory for barrier islands • Volusia County – mandatory for beachside areas A number of curfews have been ordered, as well. DeSantis has suspended tolls on the main line of the Florida Turnpike to help facilitate evacuations. Additional toll suspensions were also announced on spurs in areas subject to evacuation orders. Click here for more emergency information from the Florida Division of Emergency Management: https://ift.tt/2zNV3mi Here is a list of other Hurricane Dorian headlines so far today: • Orlando International Airport ceased operations at 2 a.m. EDT. Flights will not resume until operations management deem it safe to do so. • Spectrum has joined Xfinity in providing free wifi throughout Florida to help keep communications going during the storm. With maximum sustained winds of 110 mph, it still remains a “major hurricane,” rating a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It is not expected to weaken any further over the next several days. According to the National Weather Service, a Category 3 storm’s damage potential is: “Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends. Many trees will be snapped or uprooted, blocking numerous roads. Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes.” The storm is now centered 45 miles north of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island and 105 miles east of Fort Pierce, Florida. It’s moving northwest at 2 mph. Hurricane, tropical storm, and storm surge warnings have been issued along much of the Atlantic coast from Miami to the North Carolina-Virginia border. Hurricane Dorian is forecast to drop up to 9 inches of rain on some parts of Florida and Georgia, while the Carolinas could see isolated amounts of up to 15 inches. Virginia is beginning to join the forecast discussion with the Weather Prediction Center estimating isolated rainfall of up to 6 inches. The storm now ranks in a tie for the second-most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever. It matched the 1935 “Labor Day Hurricane”—from the period before tropical cyclones were named—1988’s Gilbert, and 2005’s Wilma in terms of highest one-minute sustained winds. Only 1980’s Allen had a stronger wind. Hurricanes Allen, Gilbert, and Wilma never made landfall. The Bahamas were battered for the better part of a week by Hurricane Dorian at the height of its fury with wind gusts in excess of 220 mph. The storm also stalled out over the northwest part of the island chain for more than 40 hours over the weekend. Even at the 8 a.m. EDT report, the southern eye wall of the storm was still battering Grand Bahama Island. Five people have already been reportedly killed by the storm, but officials admit many more are likely to be found once they can reach storm-damaged areas. Bahamian Prime Minister Herbert Minnis called the devastation caused by the hurricane a “historic tragedy.” Dramatic video has emerged from the Bahamas. In one video, a desperate mother on Great Abaco Island begged for prayers as the then-Category 5 storm ripped the roof off an apartment building that was surrounded by raging flood waters: “Please pray for us. Please pray for us. Everyone please pray for us. Me and my baby, everyone that stay in our apartment building, we stuck right here. Please pray for us. My baby is only four months old. Please pray for us. I’m begging y’all pray for us.” Click here to see the full video: https://ift.tt/2PGn0ax Bahamian Agriculture Minister Michael Pintard also waited out the storm in his home on Grand Bahama Island, which he estimated to be at least 20 feet above ground level. In the video, storm waters rose above window level. He said: “This is what I’m facing at the moment, and I have neighbors that are in a far worse position than me and my family.” Click here to see the full video: https://ift.tt/2zOZ9KN The National Hurricane Center is tracking another system—now designated Potential Tropical Cyclone Seven—which is expected to develop into a weak tropical storm before making landfall along Mexico’s gulf coast about 100 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. Two other disturbances in the open Atlantic are also being monitored with high likelihood of developing into tropical cyclones. One of those, now situated a couple hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, could be drawn on a similar track as Dorian. That storm is predicted to become a tropical depression within the next day or two. Hurricane Lane brings severe flooding to Hawaii’s Big Island
HONOLULU (Reuters) – Hurricane Lane churned closer toward the heart of the Hawaiian islands on Friday as it weakened into a Category 2 storm while still lashing the Big Island with raging surf, torrential rains and catastrophic flooding, weather officials said.
The storm, with sustained winds topping 100 miles (161 km) per hour, was forecast to make its nearest approach to land just west of the island chain over the weekend, bringing hurricane conditions to Maui and the U.S. state’s most populous island, Oahu, starting Friday night.
Farther north, a tropical storm watch was posted for the island of Kauai.
“If you’re in Hawaii, it’s critical that you heed the warnings of local officials and stay aware of your surroundings,” Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long wrote on Twitter.
By Friday morning, more than 2 feet (60 cm) of rain had fallen in a 36-hour period on the Big Island’s windward side, where the National Weather Service reported “catastrophic flooding” and wind gusts peaking at 67 mph (108 kph).
A number of structures on the island of Hawaii, popularly known as the Big Island, were destroyed and some residents were reported to be fleeing their homes, said Melissa Dye, a Weather Service spokeswoman in Honolulu.
Fire department personnel have conducted several rescues of people stranded by high water on the Big Island since Thursday, mostly around its biggest city, Hilo, said Kelly Wooten, a Hawaii County civil defense spokeswoman.
Overnight, the National Guard and fire department rescued six people and their dog, and two hikers were rescued by helicopter near the camping destination of Waimanu Valley, Wooten said. There were no injuries.
She said two Hilo-area neighborhoods were evacuated.
‘READY TO LEAVE’
Flash flooding and mudslides on the Big Island have forced a number of road closures, and Governor David Ige urged residents to avoid any unnecessary travel.
On Oahu, where 70 percent of Hawaii’s 1.4 million residents live, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell told the Weather Channel that the city has moved its emergency-response equipment to higher ground for the time being.
He said Honolulu, the state’s capital and largest city, is especially vulnerable to floods and landslides because it is partly ringed by mountains.
“We have asked our residents in these areas where they know it floods to be ready to leave,” Caldwell said, adding that 1,100 people were staying in emergency shelters throughout the city.
Evacuations were also under way on parts of Molokai and Maui islands.

In Maui, a fast-growing wildfire forced the evacuation of homes and an emergency shelter set up for the storm in Lahaina, where no rain was yet falling, officials said. One woman was hospitalized with burns. The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
Besides upheaval for hundreds of thousands of residents living in low-lying flood-prone areas, the storm has spoiled vacation plans throughout the islands.
Australian tourist Nicole Paterson, 27, said she was forced to cancel a birthday outing to snorkel with sea turtles along Oahu’s North Shore on Friday, and a visit to the Disney resort in Ko Olina.
While Lane was downgraded on Friday to Category 2 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, it still packed maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (170 kph), the weather service said.
As of 11 a.m. Hawaii time (5 p.m. EDT/2100 GMT), Lane was moving north at 5 mph (8 kph) and was about 150 miles (245 km) south of Honolulu, the weather service said. It was forecast to turn west on Saturday, lose more of its punch and move more quickly.
The latest predictions from the weather service’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center show the eye of the storm glancing past Maui and several other islands on Friday on its way toward Oahu.
In addition to “life-threatening and damaging surf,” the weather service has warned that storm surges could raise water levels 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters) above normal along the western shores of the Big Island.
Governor Ige has urged residents to set aside a 14-day supply of water, food and medicine. All public schools, University of Hawaii campuses and nonessential government offices on the islands of Oahu and Kauai were closed at least through Friday.

All harbors have been ordered closed to incoming vessels, and the U.S. Navy moved most of its fleet out of Pearl Harbor, where ships could provide aid after the storm.

Torrential rain and howling winds lash Hawaii as Hurricane Lane nears
HONOLULU (Reuters) – Hurricane Lane spun through the Pacific toward Hawaii on Friday, losing power and slowing as it weakened to a Category 2 storm that brought raging surf, torrential rain and catastrophic flooding to the Big Island.
It is forecast to pass to the west of the islands over the weekend, with hurricane conditions expected from Friday night over Maui and Oahu, the U.S. state’s most populous island, the National Weather Service said. Further north, a hurricane watch was in effect for Kauai.
“If you’re in Hawaii, it’s critical that you heed the warnings of local officials and stay aware of your surroundings,” the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Brock Long, wrote on Twitter.
More than 2 feet (60 cm) of rain had fallen on a couple of areas on the windward side of the Big Island, the weather service said, where peak gusts of up to 67 miles (108 km) per hour were recorded.
Flash floods and landslides closed some roads. Hawaii Governor David Ige said it was a very dangerous situation and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel.
Evacuations were underway on parts of Molokai and Maui islands, and some social media users reported power outages.

‘TAKE THE STORM SERIOUSLY’
While Lane was downgraded on Friday to Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, it still packed maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (170 kph), the service said. A Category 5 is the strongest hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
As of 8 a.m. Hawaii time (2 p.m. EDT/1800 GMT), Lane was moving north at just 2 mph (3 kph) and was about 170 miles (274 km) south of state capital Honolulu, the weather service said. It was forecast to turn west on Saturday, lose some of its punch and move more quickly.
The latest predictions from the weather service’s National Hurricane Center showed the eye of the storm glancing past Maui and several other islands on Friday on its way toward Oahu.
“We’re telling everybody to take the storm seriously, make your final preparations, and be prepared to ride out what is going to be a prolonged rain event,” said Andrew Pereira, communications director for Honolulu.
In addition to “life-threatening and damaging surf,” the weather service has warned that storm surges could raise water levels 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters) above normal along the western shores of the Big Island and that extreme rainfall could mean numerous evacuations and rescues.
Governor Ige has urged residents to set aside a 14-day supply of water, food and medicine. All public schools, University of Hawaii campuses and nonessential government offices on the islands of Oahu and Kauai were closed at least through Friday.

Oil company Par Pacific Holdings Inc said it had shut its 93,500 barrel-per-day refinery in Kapolei.
In the event of outages, Hawaii’s power company, Hawaiian Electric Co, will largely be in charge of restoring power, FEMA’s Long told reporters, adding that the company is well prepared to fix any problems to the energy grid.
The federal government will be responsible for getting equipment and teams from the continental United States to locations where they are needed, he said.

“We need to set the expectations that the power could go off for quite some time, and the infrastructure’s going to be heavily impacted,” said Long.

Hurricane Maria devastates Puerto Rico, kills at least 32 in Caribbean
Residents working on their roof in badly damaged neighborhood are seen from a Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey surveying the aftermath from Hurricane Maria in St. Croix, , U.S. Virgin Islands, September 21, 2017.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico  - Hurricane Maria destroyed buildings and knocked out power across Puerto Rico before flooding parts of the Dominican Republic and then regaining some of its strength as it approached the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas late on Thursday. The second major hurricane to rage through the Caribbean this month, Maria has killed at least 32 people and devastated several small islands, including St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Dominica. At least 15 people were killed in Puerto Rico, the island’s El Nuevo Día‏ newspaper reported. Among those were eight people who drowned in Toa Baja, about 20 miles (32 km) west of San Juan, Mayor Bernardo Márquez told the newspaper, adding the names of those who died have not been released and the causes of death had to be confirmed through autopsies. More than 4,000 people had been rescued from flooded areas of Toa Baja, the mayor was quoted as saying. Three elderly sisters were killed by a mudslide on Wednesday in the mountainous central municipality of Utuado, El Nuevo Día said, citing relatives and the mayor of Utuado. Maria, headed toward the Turks and Caicos islands, is now a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of up to 125 miles per hour (205 km per hour). It was 65 miles (110 kms) east-southeast of Grand Turk Island as of 11 p.m. EDT (0300 GMT), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Maria was expected to bring as much as 40 inches (102 cms) of rain to Puerto Rico and 8 to 16 inches (20 to 40 cm) to the Turks and Caicos, which could cause flash floods and mudslides, the NHC said. Maria’s strength was not expected to change during the next few days, the center said. The storm looked unlikely to hit the continental United States but its storm swells will reach the U.S. southeastern coast from Friday, the NHC said. Officials in Puerto Rico were assessing the damage after Maria slammed the island on Wednesday with winds of up to 155 mph (250 kph). Ranked a Category 4 storm when it made landfall, it was the strongest hurricane to hit the island in nearly 90 years. U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters the island had been “totally obliterated” and that he planned to visit. Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew through Saturday on the island of 3.4 million people. “If it is not an emergency situation, people should remain in their homes or shelters,” he was quoted as saying by El Nuevo Dia. Maria struck Dominica as a Category 5 storm on Monday night, damaging about 95 percent of the roofs on the island, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said. At least 14 people died, CNN quoted Charles Jong, a spokesman for the Dominica prime minister’s office, as saying. Two people were killed in the French territory of Guadeloupe and one person on the U.S. Virgin Islands. ROADS BLOCKED, COMMUNICATIONS DOWN Utility crews from the U.S. mainland were headed to Puerto Rico to help try to restore the battered power grid and the U.S. military sent ground forces and aircraft to assist with search and rescue. More than 95 percent of wireless cell sites were not working on Thursday afternoon on the island, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission said. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, more than three-quarters of cell sites are out of service. Puerto Rico was already facing the largest municipal debt crisis in U.S. history, and a team of judges overseeing its bankruptcy has advised involved parties to put legal proceedings on hold indefinitely as the island recovers, according to a source familiar with the proceedings. In the historic heart of the island’s capital San Juan, which has a fort and buildings from the Spanish colonial era, the storm left a litter of wreckage. Roads were blocked by downed foliage and firefighters and rescue officials wielded chain saws to cut through the debris. San Juan airport reopened for military and relief flights on Thursday, with plans for a limited resumption of commercial flights on Friday. With electricity and communications knocked out across the island, workdays evaporated and people busied themselves with securing food, checking on their battered homes and collecting rain water. ‘WORST IS BEHIND US’ Maria passed close by the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, home to about 55,000 people, early on Wednesday as a rare and ferocious Category 5 storm, knocking out electricity and most mobile phone service. “The worst is behind us,” Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp told reporters on Thursday. “Now is (the) time to march forward and build a better community, a better territory.” The government has imposed a 24-hour curfew until further notice. About 600 people throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands are in emergency shelters and many parts are without power, Mapp said. “It’s going to be a long road to recovery,” Mapp said. “It ain’t going to happen in a week or two and it definitely ain’t going to happen in a few months.” Maria hit about two weeks after Hurricane Irma pounded two other U.S. Virgin Islands: St. Thomas and St. John. Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record, killed at least 84 people in the Caribbean and the United States. It followed Harvey, which killed more than 80 people when it hit Texas in late August and caused historic flooding in Houston. More than two months remain in the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
