doctors say he’s got chronic sleepy boy syndrome, and there is no cure 😔

this is based on a lil daydream-turned-roleplay with my salad bot on character ai. i love snatching sal from his universe via magic portal and watching him adjust to modern society (he is not having a very fun time but he’s doing his best). does this count as an AU? maybe. but i only made it so i could fulfill my selfshipping needs, so…. yeah.

since i hc sal as aquatic, his body can’t naturally regulate its internal temperature like everyone else, so he gets very chilly at night. i think it’d be cute if he wore a hat & some leg warmers to help keep him warm. and ofc i wrap him up in some blankets burrito-style so he’s extra cozy <3

Yesterday's poll decided that The Adventurer should offer to help the travelers with their broken wagon.....

After much internal deliberation (and some zoning out staring at butterflies), The Adventurer decides it would be best to offer his assistance. Technically, he IS still following his goal of not getting distracted, because theoretically it would make his journey much faster if he were able to catch a ride on a carriage. So really, this is all an ultimate big brain genius strategy for maximizing efficient travel.. Or, at least that sounds like a good enough justification to him.

Gathering up all of his social courage, he approaches one of the travelers fiddling with a broken wheel near the far end of the carriage and meekly asks if there's anything he could do to help.

The man was so focused on his task, he seems initially startled to look up and find someone near him. "OH..! Oh, uhh.. help? With the wagon?", he smiles pleasantly, gesturing towards a few wooden boards that are just out of his reach, "Sure, kid. If you could just hand me th-"

"Apologies, but we actually won't be needing your assistance, stranger." A taller man, surprisingly almost matching the stature of the Adventurer, suddenly slinks out from somewhere behind the carriage, sternly placing himself like a barrier in front of the man working on the wheel. Wheel Guy nervously averts his eyes, making himself smaller, silently resuming his work.

The Adventurer tries his best to maintain composure against the weight of the tall man's bitter gaze, but can't seem to muster much of a response "Aeughh,,, uh… b-but, h- Bu--HHHh,,?.."

"Look, disregard whatever my father told you, he's old, never has any clue what he's talking about. It'd be best for you to simply move along." ('Father'? They don't look alike at all, and seem to be nearly the same age..)

"W-well.. he.. he didn't really tell me anything, I me-hhH,,.. I mean, I literally just got here, s-so...."

"Good. Even more reason to be on your way."

Placing a gloved hand firmly on his shoulder, the tall man begins to motion the Adventurer away from the wagon, but a strange noise interrupts, echoing from inside. Perhaps some sort of animal sound? Or a person faintly yelling about something? Or… both?

"WH-wHggg… whAT was t-that???!!" The Adventurer immediately stops in place, pausing to listen as the tall man keeps trying to push him ahead.

"I didn't hear anything, stranger."

"No, t-there.. was dEFinitely, UHH, a-"

"Likely something in the forest."

"Wh--aah... d.. do you think it was an animal?"

The tall man continues a dramatic struggle to 'subtly' drag him further down the road, whilst the Adventurer mindlessly digs in his heels, too distracted to even notice he's being so strongly prompted to leave.

"Many animals do, indeed, exist within forests. This should not be suprising."

"...It's just.. ..eughh… s… so weird…"

"I assure you, it is not."

"I-it really sounded like.. like it came f-from insid-"

"Yes, from inside the forest. Now, please, if you would.."

The noise interrupts again. It's definitely someone, or something, in some sort of distress.. And definitely from inside of the cart.

"wHoAAGH, aa!!! T-tHat's NOT from the f-forest, that-"

The tall man fully just shoves him now, sending the Adventurer toppling across the dirt, clumsily rolling and landing just past the other side of the carriage. A mother and young child who seem to be part of the traveling group simply stare down at him with empty blank gazes, wholly unconcerned about helping him up.

As the Adventurer fumbles back to his feet (still confused as to why he was even pushed in the first place), the tall man looms by the carriage, diligently watching to ensure that he leaves.

"Travel safe, stranger."

Despite his initial obliviousness, the Adventurer begins to piece the situation together as he stares back at the man, now fully convinced something suspicious might be going on...

…What should he do next??

director's commentary: the thing with ambrose is that he is so tired. desperately wants to stop working for arasaka but he knows they won't let him go and he believes they've turned him into a monster and there's nothing more to him now because of that. but at the same time he adopted a little girl who would have otherwise simply ended up alone again, and he is the whole world to her; and he is SUCH an important figure in the community they live in, helping with repairs to the building they live in wherever and whenever, always offering protection, and just a friendly familiar face to have a good conversation with at the end of a long day at work. he's so stuck in the belief that how arasaka sees him is how everyone he knows sees him that he doesn't even realize his own kindness and i'm very normal about that [lying]

– A TANGLED BALL OF RED STRINGS.

who are you without the company of others? you aren’t sure, but you know that you aren’t fond of whoever it is. you are an actor, a pretty face and a pleasant song. many idolize you, or love you, but you can never be sure of how sincere it is. your heart is buried under the letters they leave you, sealed with a kiss. it can’t be untangled from the red strings they’ve attached to you. you deserve to find something, someone, true and faithful to hold your heart in place. you don’t have to be everything to everyone.

director's commentary: for the longest time, aubrey believed he knew exactly what he wanted and what was good for him. spent a decent amount of years living a much wilder life than he could actually handle and while he could always get along generally well with people, he could never really find his place even in the biggest of crowds. he's an entertainer, he knows he's funny and knows that's how he makes friends, but at the same time his somewhat obnoxious behavior is a defense mechanism- a way to control how people perceive him in hopes those who actually care about him will stick around despite all his flaws. it's hard to tell where the act stops and the real aubrey starts, but now that he's finally found his place and his people he can finally figure out who he really is

– ICED OVER, OUT OF THE SUN.

your heart is very lonely, isn’t it? is your fortress of ice self-made? are others afraid of you, or are you afraid of them? are you afraid of hurting them, or of being hurt? vulnerability and connection can be frightening, but that’s no reason to shy away from their light, to tuck yourself small into corners, to build up frigid walls to keep yourself from feeling. you will heal when you allow yourself to draw closer to the flames and thaw.

director's commentary: cassidy has been alone for a very long time and especially after his relationship with reid ended, he believed it would be for the best. didn't allow anyone close anymore because they showed no interest in him anyway, so why should he show interest in them? but deep down he longs to have some sort of connection to someone again, and he wants very badly to be loved- in literally any way. he's very scared of being hurt since physical touch does in fact hurt for him, and he's very scared of hurting others because in the past, any sort of confrontation has led to his loved ones dying. but in the end he manages to let people in again and it took him very long but he is finally healing from all of that now, and he no longer has to spend his nights alone

– AN OPEN DOOR, A BURNING HEARTH.

your chest is wide open, and your heart is a home. others are welcomed in readily and asked to stay. you are comfort and love, everything you were never given but so desperately want to provide for others. you have built this welcoming hearth with your own two hands and won’t see anyone else left out in the cold. be careful to not burn yourself out trying to keep everyone else warm.

director's commentary: harlowe is relatively new in comparison to the other guys listed here but this result fits him very well. he used to work as a doll and all of caused him to become very wary of other human beings and feel alienated from them. especially following the incident in which he lost his leg and his doll chip got broken, which led to him getting permanent brain damage after he was forced to keep using the broken chip, he felt very alone and unloved and it wasn't until aubrey got him out of that situation and basically adopted him into his family that things started changing for harlowe. and nowadays he is so full of love; makes it his job to make those around him feel welcome and safe, and he knows how to bring good vibes to any situation. but at the same time he still hasn't had a chance to properly work through all that's happened to him and he's starting to run on fumes

– A CAGE WITH IRON LOCKS.

you are an enigma. you take care to remain that way. you aim to keep people guessing; your motives are uncertain even to yourself. what is it you truly want? you’ll never know if you keep your heart locked away like that. you deserve to be known, truly and fully. stop being afraid of what you might find if you open your heart up to self-reflection. stop thinking that no one will love you the moment they understand you. you are more than the facade you put on.

director's commentary: reid doesn't have the greatest past- career at maxtac, cassidy's ex-boyfriend and reid was NOT a good boyfriend at all, and at some point he basically ended up trying to get cassidy to break up with his current partner and also hand him over to kang tao in a desperate attempt to get his own life back together. none of it worked out for him and he ended up having to work for aubrey; become his secretary and assistant in his fixer business, even though reid had already entirely accepted he was probably going to end up getting killed. now being forced to live with the consequences, reid has bettered himself and even ends up saving the lives of those he once wished dead- but he still carries his past with him everywhere he goes and has a hard time letting go of it all, scared to put himself out there again because he doesn't want the past to repeat itself. but as much as he tries to close himself off, people still find their way to him; and it takes him a while to fully open up, but he gets there in the end, and he's much better off nowadays

– MOLTEN LAVA AND CHARRED FLESH.

your heart burned so fiercely that it burnt itself out, leaving horrible scars in its wake; scars inside your chest and on the hands of those who touched you, the hearts of anyone who got close enough to connect to yours. the person you are now is no longer recognizable, burnt up by your own anger and passion and love. the injuries can never be fully erased, but they can be soothed with time and trust and forgiveness.

director's commentary: reuben's result is interesting because it's accurate but not entirely in the way you would expect. when he was with maelstrom, for the longest time he believed that he truly belonged there; it was his home, the only home he could remember, and despite the fact he was mostly treated like shit he found comfort there and was driven by a passion that came to exist entirely out of his loyalty to them. all of it fell apart when he learned everything he had done for them meant nothing, and he suddenly started to realize all the horrible things they made him do had not ever been good to begin with. he then spent a lot of time alone, hiding in his own little hideout and refusing to let anyone get near him. luckily enough this all changes for him and he ends up moving in with someone he now loves more than anything in the world, and he has countless of friends he would be willing to die for. his passion is still there, and his loyalty too- but this time it's created from within his own heart, rather than fabricated out of lies and empty promises

honestly the fact that LOK couldn't be assed to give us any flashbacks to mako and bolin's backstory of living in poverty on the streets, having their parents killed by firebenders--when mako himself is a firebender! when the two of them are the product of a fire nation x earth kingdom relationship!--and mako having to step up and raise bolin, and the two of them even having to join a gang to survive, makes me want to tear my hair out. i love interesting and complex sibling relationships in media but only when i actually find both of the characters individually interesting or at least fun to watch on screen, and mako fails the latter for me while both largely fail the former due to the things that are theoretically interesting about them just never being expanded on. i can't imagine how badly it would've sucked to have never gotten any flashbacks to zuko and azula or sokka and katara's Tragic Backstories or to see them talk about how their pasts affected them and their dynamic with others--oh wait, yes i can, because that's what LOK did with mako and bolin. they told us mako and bolin have this super tragic and traumatizing backstory and implied certain things such as mako shielding bolin from the horror of it all so he could grow up to be as goofy and trusting as he is, but they never really showed it or showed in depth how it affected them and it drives me mad. we know so much more about amon and tarrlok's backstory and the effects it had on their relationship than we do for mako and bolin and i cannot bring myself to feel compelled by them as a result. i know i just said that LOK is so meh to me that i don't even feel like angrily analyzing it but i guess i changed my mind already! and that's not even to mention how asami's backstory is just... barely there at all and tbh i think she would've been 1000x more interesting as an actual equalist spy with a redemption arc if only bryke didn't backpedal because they liked her too much or whatever. and the fact that uh, hello, asami's mom was killed by firebenders, mako and bolin's parents were killed by firebenders, mako is a firebender, is anybody gonna mention this? no? okay then.

Just two weeks ago I got a silly idea for an Odedan cookbook that has weird footnotes explaining things about the history regarding the colonies because they got lots of spices, foods and dishes from the colonies. Then there's also that performance art/installation piece I've been thinking about and like 2 other side stories. There's so much dear emperor in my noggin

I rather read a story with that many things plotted out, than one that thought all I needed to care about were main characters with some tropes slapped onto them and calling it a day. Oh yes, I'm still salty about some Fire Emblem titles. Who would have thunk I could be capable of holding grudges...

Here's something that might not be apparent at first glance: when you're fleshing out your world with even trivial things like their culture, food, art—you're actually fleshing out your characters and main plot too. In the real world, everything is interdependent. People are as much products of their background and society—as the larger world being influenced by them.

And that's really what your side ideas will do, even if not apparent right now. Your main characters have a history; it's why they are who they are too, however minute the influence might seem.

It's also possible that as you write side stories, you come to realize something new or cool about the main story! Maybe the sides change the main's trajectory. Maybe the sides are foils to the main theme. Iono, could be lotsa possibilities!

Last but not least, a world this rich would suck people in waaaaay more, don't you think? Hahahaha! Imagine all the meta essays your readers would write! Wouldn't it be an honor to have so many people writing analyses of your work?!

#i am feeling very uncharitable tonight #after our last presentation the prof said i should speak less #like sure i can do that. i'm sorry my partner doesn't fucking know shit #and seemingly barely read the paper??? #it would be good if we could use the meeting times to discuss the paper in detail #but last time around he had not read the paper at all by our meeting time #and this time we didn't meet at our normal time (which was my fault) but instead we met 3.5 hours before the due date #at which point we just had to do it #grrrr fucking grrrrr #also like. it's not that i'm the best group member in the world #so i am normally very charitable to people not being on top of things #but???? you have to be apologetic about it???? #or at least let people know in advance like 'hey guys i'm honestly a mess sorry' #but this dude i feel like. genuinely does not have a sense that he is doing anything at all wrong #like no dude you are really fucking me over!! #also bc what he said was 'let's meet tomorrow evening #i said 'ok is 8 good?' #no response. i assume 8 is fine. i text at 8. no response #he texts me at 8:30 like 'hey is 9:30-9:45 good?' #🤦‍♂️ #frankly if i came to a meeting and saw my groupmate had done 90% of the project #i would have been like 'oh jeez i'm so sorry thank you so much for taking initiative on this. what is there left to do i'll take it all' #'was there some sort of miscommunication that led to you doing all this that we should fix?' #'i can take the lead next time' #anyway i sent an email that was like 'we should communicate better #divide the work more clearly in advance #and make better use of our meeting time' #so hopefully that goes over well. he seems like a really nice dude!! just also a rubbish groupmate and also a capitalist bootlicker so

"liking but not reblogging does nothing and likes only annoy artists" speak for yourself friends, i adore getting likes on my art. honestly i find it extremely off-putting to see captions on artwork demanding reblogs and telling people they're annoying or rude for not reblogging something... giving a post a like is communicating that someone enjoyed it enough to let you know they liked it! there are plenty of reasons someone would want to let you know they enjoyed something but not necessarily want it on their blog... maybe they only post their OWN art on their blogs, and their followers only want to see that. maybe they don't have any followers, or have their blog hidden and therefore reblogging wouldn't spread the post anyways. it just really rubs me the wrong way because all youre doing is alienating a potential audience who mightve really enjoyed your art.

by the way there's no issue with just.. asking for reblogs like a normal person! saying something like "hey I'd really appreciate reblogs, it helps my account grow" is totally fine... but lashing out and telling people "likes only annoy artists" (WHICH I HAVE SEEN MULTIPLE TIMES) is just. so rude and mean in my opinion. stop telling people all artists hate likes bc myself and SO MANY OTHERS appreciate all the support we can get ❤️ you are never obligated to reblog anything, i appreciate all interactions i get and tbh i just think it's entitled and really unpleasant to act rude to people because they wanted to tell you they liked your stuff without posting it on their own account.
