SHE USED TO DANCE !!!!!: incomprehensible rambling by me, who just saw npmd a second time w/ my parents today
god. ruth is just so so tragic to me. shes known as the funny desperate sex-deprived hormones girl for the whole musical. and then when they take 10 in play rehearsal she's finally all alone. she shows that shes been thinking about if she were in the barbecue monologues and/or has been thinking about one of the characters from them and expanding on them, adding her own personal overarching story of wanting attention and feeling like everything's getting bleaker as she gets older, realizing that the chances of doing what she wanted to do were Not Likely! we get those little moments of how the character reflects on everything in the past, having just turned 40 that day. all the little stories told throughout the song, the desperation yet depression in her voice, and the fact that her second to last line before the murder happens is:
"i used to dance..."
holy fucking shit.
she gets a chance of having her character fleshed out, to be a real person with her own conflicts, to get attention from the audience. AND THEN SHE DIES. her legacy is forever to be a nerdy prude no one liked who got killed in the murder spree. and theres something so fucking poetic about a humiliating life AND a humiliating death. a big fucking wedgie. im just. AUGH
ps right before the song came on i mentioned to my parents that this was my favorite song in the musical and then when she sang that first line my dad said to me "big into windows huh?"
