(Street Photography Now by Sophie Howarth and Stephen McLaren )
The book, Street Photography Now by Sophie Howarth and Stephen McLaren transports the reader/view to the 1980s capturing a glimpse of the day to day street life. It highlights the first big look at street photography from around the world since the 1980s. For years, street photography has been underestimated, but now these casual pictures of public life are emerging as powerful and authentic expressions of the human experience. With technology advancing digital cameras have become more common along with street photography.
Sophie Howarth is a notable figure known for her diverse contributions across art, education, and literature. As the co-founder of The School of Life and founder of the Department Store for the Mind, she has played a key role in initiatives focused on emotional intelligence and personal development. With a background as the former Curator of Public Programmes at Tate Modern, she has been involved in shaping public engagement with contemporary art. Howarth is recognized as a co-author of several books, including "Street Photography Now." This work, co-authored in the realm of photography, likely offers valuable insights into contemporary street photography practices. Sophie Howarth's career showcases a rich and impactful journey that spans the worlds of art, education, and literature.
Stephen McLaren is a Scottish photographer, writer, and curator currently based in Los Angeles. With a career spanning television documentaries in Scotland and London, he later transitioned to photography upon moving to the USA. Co-founder of Document Scotland, McLaren has been actively involved in documentary photography projects focusing on Scotland. Notably, he has edited photography books for Thames & Hudson, including "Street Photography Now" (2010). His street photography, described as a guide to the odd and visually rich aspects of everyday life, has been exhibited in various venues. Beyond his personal projects, McLaren's influence extends to co-editing books and contributing to the literature on contemporary photographic practices. The book, Street Photography Now, showcases the pictures of forty-six people known for taking real-life shots on the streets, in subways, malls, theaters, beaches, and parks. The book highlights the work of 46 photographers, ranging from established figures to emerging talents. Each photographer brings a unique perspective to street photography, capturing moments of life in various cities around the world. The photographers featured in the book offer a global perspective, demonstrating street scenes from cities like New York, Tokyo, Mumbai, Istanbul, and many more. This diversity reflects the universal nature of street photography as a form of visual storytelling. The book explores a wide range of themes and styles within street photography. From classic black-and-white compositions to vibrant and colorful images, the collection highlights the evolution of street photography as an art form. “Street Photography Now” provides insights into the history and evolution of street photography. These pages contextualize the featured works, offering readers a deeper understanding of the genre and its cultural significance. The book includes quotes and commentary from the photographers themselves, shedding light on their inspirations, techniques, and personal approaches on capturing spontaneous moments in public spaces. With a combination of about 200 colors and 60 black-and-white photographs, the book is visually captivating. "Street Photography Now" serves as an educational resource for photographers interested in improving their skills or understanding the go abouts of street photography. The book shows how street photographers capture the rich variety of human life. It's a useful addition to the literature on modern photography, highlighting the different aspects of life through their pictures.

bikini kill (kathleen hanna, kathi wilcox, billy karen, and tobi vail) portraits by Sophie Howarth, taken at the 1996 summersault festival.
"Summersault Tour Portraits 1995 - 1996 Australia. I created this artwork as a gift for Stephen Pavlovic whose personal archive is currently featured in the Powerhouse Museum's Unpopular exhibition (along with some of my own archive, this artwork included.) On display in all its aging glory, the original, with discolored sticky tape and my 90s hand-writing (which I notice has evolved over the years), hangs well 30 years on. The portraits were taken of the Summersault Festival tour party December 1995 - January 1996 and show artists and tour workers; band members, catering team, tour managers, staff from Pav’s office, DJs, skaters, boyfriends, girlfriends, Maurice the nanny, Rancid fitness trainer, friends and more."
