So I’ve been watching Neverafter and enjoying the fuck out of it and.... It reminds me of this book that gave me the biggest existential crisis of my young life as a teenager reading it in the library of my high school.
So there’s this book called The Messenger by Markus Zusack? I think? Zusak. I had to look it up. I just remember he was on the last shelf of the fiction section cuz his name had a Z. Anyways he’s more known for The Book Thief. ANYWAYS.
The Messenger is about a lot of things. But namely it’s kinda about a young man learning to stick his neck out and do things that are scary just to help people. Also it’s about a young man who has to give in to the chaos of life and accept he has no real control. Also it’s about a young man who learns that everyone is in their own story. Every single person is a whole story. Also it’s about a young man who is in a story. But he’s real! But it’s a book. In your hands. It’s about a young man who has a chat with an old man who lies to him and tells him he’s real. But he is! You know.... in this book.
And you, the reader are sitting there holding these pages echoing in your heart “He’s real! .... ? He’s... real? He’s not real.... I’m real. I’m... real?”
And you just gotta sit with that.
