Ed Ruscha “The image of the broken glass leaves a feeling of rupture after the pools – glass being the last thing you would want to find under your feet when going for a swim.” - Mary Richards, Art Historian. Taken in 1968 and forming part of Ed Ruscha’s book ‘Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass’’ is a series (as the title indicates) of nine photographs of swimming pools and one of a broken glass tumbler. All the pools are located at low-budget Las Vegas motels. ‘Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass’ continues Ruscha’s project of documenting the Los Angeles landscape. Yet it departs from his previous photographic publications - such as ‘Twentysix Gasoline Stations' 1963 and ‘Some Los Angeles Apartments’ 1965 - in that the images are printed in colour and that, individually and collectively, the ten photographs, with the broken glass at the end, hint at some kind of narrative. In this respect the photographs not only record aspects of the urban landscape but also engender emotional reactions. ‘Pool #9’ bears a sense of unease: the ripples in the water suggest that someone has just jumped into the pool from the diving board yet, strangely, nobody can be seen. Indeed the way in which the image has been cropped so as to eliminate contextual details, heightens a sense of the uncanny. However, the photographs chosen for ‘Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass’ are not entirely ominous; there is a lightness and a brightness to them as well. Don’t worry, you’ll still sleep tonight. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #edruscha #artist #nineswimmingpoolsandabrokenglass #twentysixgasolinestations #somelosangelesapartments #chouinardartinstitute #printmaker #draftsman #photographer #filmmaker #bookmaker (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1I7tx4A5Wj/?igshid=10gm6f9gp6a5q

Ed Ruscha “These low-rent resorts speak to the notion that fantasies of sun and surf are available to everyone, from motel patrons paddling around in those run-down but beautifully blue swimming pools, to multimillionaire movie stars who have the real thing in their backyards.” - Alexandra Schwartz, Art Historian. ‘Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass’ by Edward Ruscha, (1968) is the first of Ruscha’s books to use colour and contains photographs of public and private swimming pools in Las Vegas and Los Angeles followed by one of a broken glass. The suggestion of danger; together with blank spreads that break up the sequence fill the final nineteen pages. His series of photographic artist books which began in 1962 with ‘Twentysix Gasoline Stations’ were incredibly popular upon release and remain highly influential. The majority of these books reflect his visual engagement with the banal spectacle of Los Angeles – a city he has described in as “the ultimate card-board cut out town”. With his ‘no-style’ photography Ruscha has documented the milieu of gas stations, hotel swimming pools, apartments, parking lots and the ‘strip’ of iconic ‘Sunset Boulevard' delivering deadpan images to match predetermined book titles that are as bold as they are bland. His laid-back factual photography and choice of book format was a considered element. The flatness of the page directs our eyes to consider the graphic qualities of his subject, the busy yet blank facades of the Los Angeles environment. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #edruscha #artist #nineswimmingpoolsandabrokenglass #twentysixgasolinestations #somelosangelesapartments #chouinardartinstitute #printmaker #draftsman #photographer #filmmaker #bookmaker (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1I7nwDgda5/?igshid=yxwajrjpe9oy

Ed Ruscha Born in Nebraska in 1937 Ed Ruscha grew up in the mid-west city of Oklahoma. Following an early interest in cartooning, Ruscha pursued a career in commercial art, heading west to Los Angeles to enrol at the ‘Chouinard Art Institute’ in 1956. During this period of study he also undertook a short apprenticeship in type-setting and at the completion of his studies in 1960 worked as a graphic artist in an advertising agency. Exposed to and encouraged by the work of Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein, Ruscha dedicated himself to painting. In 1962 his work featured alongside that of Andy Warhol and Lichtenstein in ‘New painting of common objects’ a survey show that captured the emergence of the pop art scene. Although he considers himself primarily a painter, Ruscha has worked across a variety of mediums – printmaker, draftsman, photographer, film-maker, book-maker. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #edruscha #artist #nineswimmingpoolsandabrokenglass #twentysixgasolinestations #somelosangelesapartments #chouinardartinstitute #printmaker #draftsman #photographer #filmmaker #bookmaker (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1I7iOWAC5y/?igshid=1e8qwd5e4veyy
