“Society would not forgive banks that are not now the solution to the crisis” | Economy

“Banks have to be part of the solution and not of the problem, as happened in the 2012 crisis. Society would not forgive us that now that this blow has come so hard we would not support SMEs, companies and the self-employed … after all what happened”. Nieves Vallespín, an employee of Santander in Moratalaz, a neighborhood in Madrid, expresses himself with this clarity. And something similar is believed by Enma Moreno, director of a Bankia branch in the Cartuja neighborhood in Granada, and Laura L. P., who works in a BBVA office in Las Palmas. “I see the bank determined to support customers with difficulties, it is not a pose. I think he wants to facilitate the mortgage moratorium or the loans with guarantees. There is a conviction that the situation is complicated and we have to push to get ahead, ”says Laura by phone.

The bad reputation of the banks, protagonists of a crisis that can cost more than 55,000 million to the Spanish, usually falls on the employees; they stand up when inappropriate products are placed or commissions are difficult to justify. Now a health and economic emergency has arrived and banks believe that it can change its role; in fact, the unions are demanding this from the leaders of large entities. 80% of bank staff are on the street, around 150,000 workers, according to Joan Sierra, head of the financial sector at CC OO, although now the majority, according to CECA and AEB, are teleworking and one is a minority giving them face in crisis.

The Bank of Spain piloted the operation so that a part of the bank branches and practically all of the ATMs were open during the state of alarm to provide basic financial services. The banks assumed their public service work and collaborated in the task, despite the fact that the staff has not had all the protection measures. The first 15 days have passed and the impression is good: the pensions of the elderly have been distributed, which was a key point due to their risk of contagion and the difficulty they present because they do not use digital media and prefer cash. Enma Moreno tells from Granada that one of her main tasks has been to call the pensioners and confirm that their money has been deposited and that it was not necessary for them to go to the bank to check it. “They appreciate the call and stay calm,” says Moreno.

The worst, the fear of contagion

Those who are on the front line serving customers ended their fifteen-day shift on Friday; on Monday they will telework while another checkpoint will arrive to attend the offices. “We have been afraid. The day I was told it started in the office, I didn't sleep at night. It is fear of contagion due to my negligence, because we do not know if the clients have the virus and because the protection measures are not the best either. The worst thing is to think that you can bring the virus home, although we take many protective measures and the office is disinfected, “says Laura from Las Palmas.

“The bank has tried by all means to have methacrylate screens, but it has not been possible because everyone has asked for them at the same time,” adds Laura. For Enma Moreno, her obsession with not transmitting the virus at home led her to go directly to the shower and wash all her clothes every time she returned from the office.

Nieves Vallespín, who did have a methacrylate screen, agrees that there has been tension and explains that his situation has been similar to that of the supermarket cashiers, who have expressed their fear. He says that in Santander, as in most banks, customers could not queue inside the branch and were waiting on the street. “Only those who can attend enter; I think they have understood it, it is for the good of all ”, he points out. Bank employees have attempted to refer many of the customer's operations to ATMs, but have not always been able to replace personal treatment.

The fact that Spanish banking is among the most digitized, has not prevented some clients from finding reasons to go to branches. Some have precisely gone to branches to ask for cards to start operating remotely, others for reimbursements or for the collection of the first ERTE, as well as to offer cash to pharmacies or supermarkets or request information about investment funds and about the public guarantees launched by the Government, point from Abanca and other entities.

The office, the telephone of hope

However, office operations “have fallen dramatically, something logical due to the slowdown in economic activity. Reimbursements in offices have been reduced in the last week by 35%, for example, and transfers in branches, more than half. Cash withdrawals from ATMs have fallen by 60% ”, they point out from Sabadell.

But it is not always financial matters that drive clients to offices. “We are the telephone of hope these days, many pensioners are very solicos and they take advantage of our call to tell us about their things, ”says Enma Moreno, from Bankia. Telephone of hope and bank branch will seldom have coincided in the same sentence, but it has arrived in this time of uncertainty.

From UGT, its head of financial services, Roberto Tornamira, recalls that this is an excellent time to remember the importance of the financial sector, “something that they know well in the many towns where they have been left without it.” Once the entities have given the appropriate health instructions to their employees, their focus is “ATMs. The employees themselves are cleaning it and they shouldn't be doing it. ”

Sierra, from CC OO, directs his concern that there are no ERTEs or EREs “and for now they are complying with it.” This union representative recalls that if today bank branches play a fundamental role, in the post-coronavirus period they will recover, if possible, more importance. “It will be in these offices where the future of numerous SMEs and freelancers will be channeled. It is the branch managers who know the micro productive fabric well and the banking network will be very important ”for the aid and needs of these companies.
