What we miss when we don't talk about friendship (in MDZS)
I'd like to open with the statement that this is not about shipping -- none of my thesis is to say "don't ship this" or "this ship isn't real." People can and have shipped whatever the hell they want and should continue to do so for as long as it makes you happy. It's not even a question of "sure you can ship it but it's not CANON," because the MXTX canon is wonderfully good at being ambiguous and supporting multiple interpretations.
What this thesis is to say is that some of these themes and motifs to explore are about friendship, and they don't tend to get talked about much, because people are mostly focused on the romantic and sexual dimensions of a dynamic. Romantic and sexual dimensions are great, but they don't annihilate or even subsume platonic dimensions -- yes, sometimes you can be a lover and a friend, but sometimes you can just be a friend and not a lover and that's no less important. As a post I saw recently said which stuck with me -- don't remember the poster, alas, but it was something in the vein of -- "it's not about the intensity of the relationship, but the flavor of it." Platonic character dynamics can be just as obsessive and consuming as romantic dynamics, they can be discussed and analyzed separately without needing to invalidate romantic and sexual dynamics.
So! That disclaimer aside, let's talk about: FRIENDSHIP IN MDZS, and what we miss when we don't talk about friendship as a dynamic in this story separate from romantic and sexual interest. Friendship shows up repeatedly in this story with its own sub-plots and arcs and undercurrents and hazards separate from the romance that's going on, and it's mostly going on with the Lans.
Part 1: Lan Xichen and friendship
A cornerstone of this analysis has to do with a meta post I read very early on in the fandom about the Lans when viewed through a Confucian lens. Lan Qiren in particular is a very, very Confucian character, and he raised his nephews to those traditions and values. The pertinent one here is the topic of the "Five relationships" which outline the relationships that a man of authority can expect to have throughout his lifetime: self to ancestors, self to descendents, self to authorities and subordinates, self to marriage partners, and self to friends. Each one comes with a set of strictures and requirements which when added up combine to a world that is very, very emotionally taxing and extremely short on interpersonal and emotional support. He is expected to obey and submit to guidance from his seniors, but he can't ask them for help. He is expected to lead and govern his subjects, but he can never be wrong or show weakness or doubt. It's especially important, I think, that Lan Xichen is raised to expect that even any romantic relationship he might have (read: marriage to a woman) would not actually be emotionally supportive to him in any meaningful way; it would be another set of obligations to uphold, another place he would be expected to be remote and poised and never show weakness or ask for help.
The exception is friendship. Friendship is the only relationship structure Lan Xichen can have in his life that has any hope of actually being nurturing and emotionally supporting to him, a place he can let down his guard and ask for help with the expectation of receiving it. It becomes very clear from very early on that friendship means everything to Lan Xichen as a character. He enters the story with a strong, supportive friendship with one of the only true peers a man of station can have (Nie Mingjue) and it's clear that this has formatively set his expectation of what a friendship can and should be. Lan Xichen really wants to be the Friendship Is Magic guy. He believes that friendship is the best way to solve problems, and that everybody would be able to solve their problems if only they had a friendship like his, and that belief is a lot of what runs him into a meat grinder later in the story. He thinks that Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao are capable of maintaining a friendship post-war, and does not understand why they cannot, and his attempts to friend-matchmake the two of them ultimately lead both to disaster.
Part 2: Lan Wangji and friendship
The header says Lan Wangji, but this is actually about Lan Xichen again, and about Wei Wuxian. A pretty common joke in the fandom is that Lan Xichen is "the #1 WangXian shipper," that he recognizes Lan Wangji's sexual and romantic attraction to Wei Wuxian from very early on and supports him in pursuing such a relationship. It's a nice joke, but I think it misses the mark, because the looming specter of their parents' disastrous and traumatic marriage means that Lan Xichen would never approach the idea of his brother entering into a romantic relationship so cavalierly. (Lan Qiren, in some ways, had a clearer notion of what shape Lan Wangji's interest in Wei Wuxian had the potential to be than Lan Xichen did, perhaps because he doesn't have the same obsession with friendship; if he has any close friendships of his own, we're not shown them.)
Lan Xichen is not encouraging Lan Wangji to have a romantic summer fling. Lan Xichen encourages his association with Wei Wuxian specifically because he thinks Lan Wangji needs friends. Not just in the sense of any parent or adult wanting their child to make friends, but specifically in the context of these restrictive hierarchical relationships that hem in their world. Lan Xichen is afraid that Lan Wangji will be alone, and emotionally starved, and have no one he can ask for help or rely on, because that is his experience of a world without friendship. (Lan Wangji, of course, is not in the same position as Lan Xichen because he has Lan Xichen to rely on.) Lan Xichen wants Lan Wangji to have the same kind of friendship that he himself has with Nie Mingjue, and he thinks that Wei Wuxian has the potential to be that kind of friend. That is the context in which he encourages their association, and tries to arrange for them to have time together, and to become closer; not as a potential romantic partner but as a steadfast emotional and logistical support through Lan Wangji's adult life.
If Lan Xichen knew that Lan Wangji would fall in love with Wei Wuxian (had already started to,) I'm not at all sure that he would have encouraged that. In pretty much any arc past the Lan Lectures, he doesn't, both because Wei Wuxian stopped being a good candidate for supportive friendship (he's clearly got too much of his own shit going on) and because he realizes that what is developing in Lan Wangji bears very little resemblence to his own relationships. He might not outright try to sabotage the relationship but he's clearly worried about its potential to bring disaster on Wangji -- and he's very correct to be worried, as it turns out.
Part 3: Lan Sizhui and friendship
So, All Of That Happens; Wei Wuxian dies, Lan Wangji is laid low for years and seems poised to grieve for the rest of his life; Nie Mingjue dies and takes Lan Xichen's support with him. Now we come to the present day, and the present day has Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi.
Let's take a moment to step back and ask from an analytical perspective: Why is Lan Jingyi, as a character, in the story? Assuming that in a novel as polished as MDZS, each element is included for good reasons. Why is Lan Jingyi in the story and why is he Lan Sizhui's best friend? In the new world we're introduced to, the Lan are already represented, and very positively represented by Lan Sizhui. Lan Jingyi provides a convenient avenue for both exposition-dumping and sass -- saying the things that everyone else is too polite to say -- but we could have gotten that through another character (Jin Ling also plays this role) or introduced another Junior who isn't Lan, like Ouyang Zizhen. Why is it important to the story that Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi are friends?
The Juniors in general represent hope for the world to change, hope for the new generation. In Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi, we see that the terrible loneliness that drove their seniors to disaster in the previous generation, is averted. Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi have a friendship that is close and true, and we are never given reason to doubt it. Their priorities are aligned; it's unlikely that Sect politics or personality conflicts will ever drive them apart. They have what Lan Xichen craved: a friendship that will support them through tragedy and disaster. Their friendship stands to demonstrate that in the new generation, things will get better.

I've been asked to provide brief commentary on some specific books from my 2023 reading list, so --
Achieving Our Country: Leftist Thought in Twentieth-Century America, Richard Rorty
I was not super impressed by this one. The core thesis -- the radical theory-driven left is not particularly helpful in terms of advancing concrete leftist political goals within the American system -- is, at this point, not news. (It wasn't even really news in 1998 when the book was published.) And everything surrounding that thesis...well, it is very serious about the idea that it is Good and Helpful to develop a nationalistic-but-leftist ideological consciousness, which should raise a lot of eyebrows no matter who you are.
This book was recommended by Matt Yglesias, and it reads very much like part of the ideological grounding of someone like Matt Yglesias. Which is not a compliment. I like Yglesias, but -- ideological grounding is not his strong suit.
The Tatami Galaxy, Tomihiko Morimi
It was...fine, I guess.
There are four stories, which are theoretically all alternate-universe versions of the same events. (Not a spoiler, that fact is revealed extremely quickly.) They're all very modern-Asian-style magical surrealism. The last story is substantially the longest and substantially the best; its vision of the titular "tatami galaxy," a Borges-style labyrinth made from endless iterations of your own college dorm room, is at the very least punchy and memorable. But there's not really enough there there, and the first three stories are a slog.
The Man Who Was Thursday, G. K. Chesterton
This is fucking amazing. Probably the best book I read all year, unless that goes to the Oscar Wilde.
It's witty throughout, although it's the wit of an old stodgy conservative British guy who sneers at a lot of things, so you have to be willing to live with that. But it's also...well, ballsy is the best word I have for it. Saying that it's a "twist book" fails to do it justice. There is a twist -- but the more-relevant thing is that it sneaks around behind you and kicks you in the back of the head in a way that is mostly not about the twist, but about a much-more-fundamentally-weird thing that Chesterton is doing. The book you are reading at the end is very much not the book you thought you were reading at the beginning.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Gabrielle Zevin
Mnr mnr mnr mnr. My feelings here are complicated.
On the one hand: this is a book about a small number of people with incestuously-tangled lives who make art together and in reaction to each other, who are absolutely obsessed with the art that they're making. This is a theme that has a lot of resonance for me, and, like, it gets the feel of that thing largely right. There are also other, more-idiosyncratic reasons for this book to have resonance for me.
On the other hand: it's a character-driven litfic book, and I don't love any of the characters, or even particularly like them. They are the wrong flavor of nerd, with the wrong kinds of thoughts and emotional issues. Also, it is a book about making and selling video games that...reads like it was written by someone who doesn't quite understand how video games work or how the video game market works.
On the gripping hand: it does a very good job of portraying the aspect of life experience that is "as you get older, the intense dramas of your youth don't get forgotten, but the colors kind of fade and the feelings come to seem much less important with perspective."
In particular: Near the beginning, there is a side character who is portrayed as the Absolute Fucking Unforgivable Shitbag Monster of a contemporary story told using contemporary norms. He does the kind of things that are specifically tailored to make you think this guy deserves nothing but hate, forever. The characters, to the extent that they know about him and what he's done, by and large do feel that way. And then...well, it's not like there's ever a comeuppance or a redemption or anything like that. But at the end, the feeling is much more -- well, he's this guy we know, there's a lot of awkwardness related to past pain and past wrongdoing, but even so we're something sort of like old friends and really it's mostly just water under the bridge at this point.
Which is, complicatedly, interesting.

Hello beauty, all i want to say that i really like your fanfict, i read so many fanfict about kuchikis, but i always end up in your fanfict. Can you make fanfict just about the kuchikis and their adventure? As a siblings ofcourse
Thank you! I'm glad you've been enjoying it.
I actually do have plans to write a Kuchiki Sibs Go on a Mission fanfic, which will be the next part of Heart is a Muscle after the one I'm currently writing. At the current rate I'm going, it might come out sometimes around 2025, assuming it doesn't kill me. Renji is in it, he's just back at home, running Squad 6 and doing his physical therapy and letting Captain Ukitake teach him to make drinkable tea. The plan, and in fact, the only thing that is keeping me from giving up on this idea before I even start, is that it is going to be at least partially epistolary, with letters going back and forth between my usual three main characters, and possibly an occasional one to or from Captain Ukitake or anyone else I feel like including.
It's been my thesis from the beginning that Kuchiki come in two flavors: (1) intense and prickly, who live by their own principles and have trouble connecting to others (Ginrei, Byakuya) and (2) charismatic and emotionally intelligent ones, who tend to smooth over the relationships between the 1s (Soujun, Byakuya's grandmother). Rukia tends more toward the first variety, and it's a big challenge for her and Byakuya to relate to one another on their own. Fortunately, Renji is basically a #2 Kuchiki in everything but name, and has been fundamental in Rukia and Byakuya building a good foundation for their relationship. The entire point of Unnamed Epistolary Fanfic is to see if they've done enough job of it that it can stand on its own. (I, myself, am still not entirely convinced)
That being said, over the course of writing these idiots for hundreds of thousands of words, I've realized that Rukia and Byakuya are substantially more difficult POV characters for me to write than Renji, and it gets even harder the less Renji there is to bounce them off of. I've actually written a lot of scenes of Rukia and Byakuya hanging out and doing things together, they're just sprinkled throughout my longer stories. Sorry, friend, the Renji is compulsory.

The Benefits of Using a Gravity Bong
When it comes to smoking cannabis, there are lots of ways to savor the experience. One particular method is employing a gravity bong.Gravity bongs are becoming increasingly popular among cannabis enthusiasts, and for good reason. Not just are they easy to produce, but they also deliver a potent hit that may take you to new heights. However, utilizing a gravity bong can be daunting for beginners. That's why in this comprehensive guide, we'll be exploring all you need to learn about gravity bong, from their history and types to how to utilize them and their pros and cons.
Tumblr media
1. History and Types of Gravity Bongs Gravity bongs have been with us for decades and are said to own originated in the 1970s. The first kind of gravity bong was created from the plastic bottle and a bucket of water. With time, different types of gravity bongs have emerged, each with unique features and designs. A number of the popular types of gravity bongs include bucket bongs, waterfall bongs, and the classic bottle bongs. Essentially, gravity bongs work on the principle of using gravity to draw smoke into the bong chamber and then inhaling it. 2. How exactly to Produce a Gravity Bong Building a gravity bong is relatively easy and requires few materials. The most common materials used are plastic containers or buckets, and a pan piece. To produce a gravity bong, you'll need to cut underneath of a plastic bottle or bucket and add a bowl piece to the hole. Next, fill underneath of the bottle or bucket with water, making certain to help keep the bowl dry. Place the bowl on the surface of the bottle or bucket and light it while slowly pulling up the bottle or bucket. This creates a machine that draws the smoke into the bottle or bucket, which then you're able to inhale from the opening. 3. Pros and Cons of Utilizing a Gravity Bong There are several benefits to utilizing a gravity bong. One of many primary advantages is the potent hit so it provides. Since gravity bongs work with a vacuum to draw smoke, they deliver a top concentration of THC, which can make a more intense and long-lasting high. Additionally, they're easy to produce and use, making them accessible for novices and amateurs. However, they could also have drawbacks. They may be harsh on the throat and lungs, and the smoke produced could be very dense and difficult to clear. Additionally they demand a significant amount of cannabis to make a hit, which is often expensive. 4. Gravity Bongs vs. Other Smoking Methods There are several smoking methods that cannabis enthusiasts use, including joints, vaporizers, and bongs. While each method has its advantages, gravity bongs have several unique features that differentiate them from these other methods. Like, gravity bongs deliver a far more potent hit than joints, which typically use less cannabis. They also give a fuller flavor profile than vaporizers given that they don't use any heat to extract cannabinoids. However, compared to traditional bongs, gravity bongs can be tougher to utilize and produce harsher smoke. 5. Precautions When Employing a Gravity Bong While gravity bongs are usually safe to make use of, there are certainly a few precautions to consider. First, the smoke produced could be dense, so be sure to clear the bong chamber after inhaling to avoid coughing or discomfort. Second, avoid using plastic bottles that have been heated as they are able to release harmful chemicals. Lastly, be mindful of the quantity of cannabis you use to prevent overconsumption, which can cause adverse effects.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: Gravity bongs are a straightforward and effective way to enjoy a potent hit of cannabis. With their straightforward design and accessibility, even beginners can try their hand at using them. However, like any smoking method, it's vital that you be mindful of the risks and benefits. Hopefully, this comprehensive guide has given you the information and insight you'll need to enjoy a gravity bong responsibly.

Imam Pasand Vs Alphonso mangoes. Which one is best?
Tumblr media
The Alphonso mango is a variety of mango that is grown in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It is also known as the Haapus mango. The Alphonso mango is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general and military advisor who helped establish the Portuguese colony in Goa, India. Alphonso mangoes are also grown in other parts of India, such as Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.
The Imam Pasand mango is a variety of mango that is native to India. It is one of the most popular varieties of mango in the country, and it is known for its sweet taste and juicy flesh and It is mostly grown in South India. Imam Pasand mangoes are generally larger than Alphonso mangoes, and they have a sweeter taste and juicy flesh. It is also commonly called as Himam Pasand mangoes, Himayuddin mangoes, Humayun Pasand, Himma pasand mangoes.
Imam Pasand mangoes
When it comes to mangoes, there are two main types that people tend to prefer: the Imam Pasand and the Alphonso. Both types of mangoes have their own unique flavor and texture, so it can be hard to decide which one is best. In general, Imam Pasand mangoes are considered to be sweeter and softer than Alphonso mangoes. They also have a more intense flavor, making them a good choice for those who want a strong mango taste. Alphonso mangoes, on the other hand, are less sweet and have a firmer texture. They also tend to be less expensive than Imam Pasand mangoes. So, if you're looking for a delicious and affordable mango, the Alphonso is a good option.
Alphonso mangoes
Alphonso mangoes are widely considered to be the best type of mango, and for good reason. They're incredibly sweet and have a rich, creamy texture that makes them perfect for use in desserts or simply eating on their own.
However, Imam Pasand mangoes are also quite delicious. They have a slightly different flavor than Alphonso mangoes, but it is still very enjoyable. Some people prefer the taste of Imam Pasand mangoes because they find it to be more complex.
The Imam Pasand mango is large and round, with a smooth skin that is easy to peel. The flesh of the fruit is soft and juicy, with a sweet taste. The Alphonso mango is small and round, but its skin is thinner and more delicate. The flesh of the Alphonso mango is slightly firmer than that of the Imam Pasand, and it has a sweeter flavor.
When it comes to choosing between these two types of mangoes, it really depends on your personal preference. If you like your mangoes to be sweet and juicy, then the Imam Pasand is a good choice. If you prefer a firmer fruit with a richer flavor, then the Alphonso mango is a better option.
Which mango is the best?
It's a tough call, but we must give the edge to Alphonso mangoes. They're simply more delicious, with a richer, creamier flavor. That said, Imam Pasand mangoes are still excellent, and if you can find them fresh, they're worth trying.
When it comes to mangoes, there are two clear front runners – Imam Pasand and Alphonso. But which one is the best?
There are a few key factors to consider when comparing these two mangoes. First, let’s look at taste. Both Imam Pasand and Alphonso mangoes are incredibly sweet, but Alphonso mangoes have a slightly richer flavor. Some say that Alphonso mangoes also have a bit of a floral note to them.
When it comes to texture, again both types of mangoes are very soft and easy to eat. However, Alphonso mangoes tend to be a bit creamier than Imam Pasand.
Finally, let’s compare price. Both mangoes can be fairly pricey, but Imam Pasand mangoes are generally more expensive.
So, which one is better? Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If you prefer a sweeter flavor, go for Alphonso mangoes. If you prefer a creamier texture, go for Imam Pasand. And if you don’t mind spending a little extra money, Imam Pasand mangoes are the way to go.
Conclusion
There is no definitive answer when it comes to the best type of mango. Some people prefer Imam Pasand mangoes for their sweetness and juiciness, while others prefer Alphonso mangoes for their rich flavor. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If you want to try both types of mangoes, we suggest buying them from a Natural Mangoes organic store or farmer’s market so that you can taste them for yourself and decide which one you like better.
At the end, it really depends on your personal preferences as to which mango you think is best. Some people prefer the sweetness of Alphonso mangoes while others prefer the tanginess of Imam Pasand mangoes. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide which mango you like best!

The tag on your last reblog got me curious so now I'm gonna give you a chance, how does vinegar affect pickling and what kind of vinegars are there for pickling?
(i love pickled stuff so i might learn something new here)
KICKS DOWN THE FUCKING DOOR
ok so. you have white distalled vinegar, fruit cider vinegar (typically apple), malt vinegar, and the wine vinegars (rice, red, white, champagne). those are the ones i know anyway. there's also balsamic but that's so expensive and intense i can't imagine pickling with it. the vinegars all pickle items the same, roughly speaking; my rice wine is only 4.2% acidity (my others are 5% acidity, which is about what you want) so it's less acidic than my other ones but there's not a meaningful difference in pickling.
but what the vinegars do is affect the flavor. and they're a big influence on the taste of the pickles, arguably more than any seasoning. here i documented a basic flavor profile for the vinegars i have at home, to give you an idea of how the flavor of each vinegar would affect the pickled item. most pickled things use white distalled vinegar; it has a good tang but not a strong flavor, which showcases the flavor of the pickled item and any seasonings. it's also very cheap and easy to get in bulk. but if you're dealing with strong vinegars like white wine, their flavor is so intense it can overwhelm the pickled item itself, especially if not diluted.
which brings me to dilution. when i make pickles, i do a 1:1 water:vinegar ratio. some people go all vinegar, and some people go only water. for me, the 1:1 ratio gives a strong vinegar flavor while having the water dilute it enough that the vinegar flavor doesn't swallow everything. 1 cup rice wine might not be bad on its own but a full cup of white wine? that would be terrible. as an aside i don't like white wine that much because it's really if you don't have the exact right amount it's impossible to taste anything but that. ruined some otherwise delicious apples but that's just me. so anyway if you do want to use stronger vinegars, it's better to do it with other milder vinegars. those vinegars will cut the intensity of the stronger vinegar while bringing their own unique flavor, like if you used red wine vinegar with its fruity tang then cut it with rice wine's dry sweetness. with this being said, malt vinegar is often used on its own in things like english pickled onions. i've never had nor used malt vinegar before so i can't account for taste or usage.
so there you go. tl;dr: vinegar affects pickles by taste primarily and you can use those tastes in different ways.

There’s been a lot about Magic: the Gathering that has kept me interested through the years. The art, the stories, the way flavor and mechanics interact, the gameplay with its relatively ease of entry and high skill ceiling, deckbuilding, the collectibility, and most of all, the social aspect of sitting across from other players with a deck we built ourselves and playing a game together. Over time, these changed for me.
The art direction became more cohesive and directed. While this does create a more cohesive game look and help prevent such a wide quality range in card art, it also makes it less interesting. I started with Ice Age, and that art was all over the place, both in terms of style and quality. But I loved it. The art styles that most captivated me are gone, replaced with a great deal of ArtStation-esque art. It’s looks nice enough. Some artists, like Johannes Voss and Magali Villeneuve and Seb McKinnon, do have their own distinctive styles, it still fits within this narrow range. It’s good, but it’s not as compelling to me.
The stories when I started felt epic and… messy. In a good way. Dominaria was a world with a rich history and getting boots off the huge power struggle between Lim Dûl and the ring of Mairsil and the demons that granted him power, his undead underlings, the Kjeldorans and the Balduvians (leaders and more rank-and-file soldiers and workers), the creatures of Fyndhorn, and the powerful mages and planeswalkers that battled for through intrigue and direct confrontation. So much of the world building could be seen in the cards’ flavor text. I fell in love with that, poring over the few cards I had as a kid, imagining the world and the characters. It was so fun. After that, reading the cards and books of Tempest, the invasion of the Phyrexians, the journey of the Weatherlight, all made an interesting story, though it wasn’t my favorite type of story. The world building was still cool. I’m just not a fan of the trope of getting a bunch of powerful friends to beat the big bad. Unless it’s in the context of a roleplaying game. Unfortunately for me, much of Magic’s storytelling became a streamlined and cleaner version of that. Superfriends. Not great. Especially when the heroes are vapid and dimensionless. And card flavor is boring and does not explain the world or story in any real way. Even with so-called “Story Spotlight” cards.
Fortunately for me, rules became more clear. Mostly. More emphasis was put onto aligning the flavor and mechanics. Addition of new mechanics complicates things, but usually in a a fun way.
Deckbuilding is fun, except I’m formats like Standard where winning matters and optimal decks for the meta are already figured out. That’s not fun for me. But EDH/Commander are where it’s at for me. Non-rotating, casual, multiplayer format. The focus is fun and jank and personal decks. But even that format has become difficult as Commander decks have become more standardized with auto-includes and staples and a handful of powerful wincons. With the right table, these can be worked around, but it does narrow the scope of the game. Make things less variable and weird and fun.
The social aspect is still something I love, though now that I am presenting as a woman I find those spaces much less comfortable. Even chill, low-intensity spaces are still not great places for women and it suddenly made much more sense to me why it was so male-dominated. The pandemic also hindered much in-person gaming. I tried to invite women and queer gamers, but that didn’t work well. It’s been a struggle.
And now? I cannot keep up with the releases. It’s always spoiler season. I’ve given up trying to collect things because each set has so many cards, many of them s special versions you have to get from special boosters that cost more. Collector boosters that cost about $30 for 15 cards. Secret Lair drops with limited-time versions of cards, some of which have unique mechanics. And just so many products that I can’t keep up. And I don’t want to. It’s like the final nail in the coffin. I’m burned out of the game. I’m tired of the power creep. The constant pandering to Commander players like me with format-breaking cards that aren’t fun. I hate that I have to walk away from this game after 28 years but it’s not fun, it’s overwhelming, too expensive, and no longer as narratively or visually or mechanically as compelling as it used to be. And I’m mad about it. I know I shouldn’t be. It’s just a product created and sold under capitalism. But I have so many memories with this game. And to see… this? I guess I’m disappointed.

The Science of Baklava: How Ingredients and Cooking Techniques Affect the Final Product
The Science of Baklava: How Ingredients and Cooking Techniques Affect the Final Product
Baklava today is a very popular delicacy dessert one loves to enjoy. It is a traditional middle eastern dish, which is now a widespread delight in the world today and is a symbol of hospitality as well.
Baklava is made in a variety of ways today in different regions of the world and now is enjoyed for centuries by people. Now the basic recipe of baklava might be simple, but the final output varies greatly depending on various complex factors. Hence let’s explore them in this article.
Ingredients:
The quality and kind of items used in baklava can greatly influence the taste and overall finishing.
The type of nuts used in the filling can change the flavor and the texture of baklava.
Mostly Pistachios, walnuts, and almonds are some of the most used nuts in Baklava, but along with this, some uncommon ones are pecans and cashews. With pecans in the picture, the baklava gets a distinct flavor and texture, and with cashew, a slight mind, and slightly sweet flavor.
Also, finely chopped nuts can to add to the flavor of the baklava.
Hence, with every nut change, there is a change in the end flavor of baklava, hence it is always good to get the best quality nut to ensure the best quality baklava.
The syrup type, which is used in making baklava can also affect its flavor and end taste.
Some recipes involve honey, while others have the simple syrup made with sugar, water, and lemon juice.
In the case, of this syrup, the ratio of sugar to water and the add up of other flavors like rosewater or orange blossom water can have an impression on the final taste. This is a very crucial element to add up, as too much syrup can make the baklava overly sweet and sticky, and too less and make it dry.
The Cooking Techniques:
In making every food item the cooking method and technique definitely have an effect on the end result.
Coming to baklava, phyllo dough is an important ingredient in it and its thickness has a great impact on the overall dessert. The thinner dough layers can create a lighter, delicate baklava, whilst the thick and dense layer can make an intensely dense and substantial one.
Also, the filo pastry should be brushed with butter or oil between each layer for the creation of crisp and flaky texture.
The oil too has a crucial role:
If oil is portioned in between layers of this dough can heavily influence the end result. Too less butter or oil can make the baklava dry and crumbly, on the other hand too much can make it a greasy and heavy dessert.
On the other hand, the temperature too has a role:

The Best Hot Pickles You'll Ever Eat
Are you a pickle lover? If so, we have the perfect recipe for you! We've come up with an incredible hot pickle beer recipe that's perfect for throwing together at parties, or just for yourself!
Tumblr media
Add a few spices to your pickle brine.
The addition of spices to your pickle brine can add some extra flavor, kick and zip to your pickles.
Spices are a great way to enhance the flavor of pickles. They can be used as an alternative for salt or sugar (especially if you're trying to cut down on carbs), but they also have their own special qualities that work well in conjunction with other ingredients like vinegar or garlic powder:
Spices like cayenne pepper will add heat and make things hot-hot! This is perfect when you want something spicy but still sweet enough that kids won't complain too much about eating it—and adults will appreciate how much better everything tastes after spiking up their favorite snack food with these little guys.
Cinnamon sticks are known for adding sweetness without spoiling the taste buds too much; however, many people find them too intense at first so try adding less than usual until you get used to its strength level before adding more later on after playing around with different amounts until finding what works best for yourself.* Garlic cloves are another common option because they lend themselves well towards enhancing other flavors while adding savory goodness throughout every bite taken from whatever dish containing them has been prepared--whether it's raw veggies being served cold outside during summertime temperatures or hot foods coming straight out from ovens onto plates placed within reach inside dining rooms where guests enjoy spending time together over meals together!
The best pickles for your taste buds
Pickles are a great way to add a little zest to your meal, and they're easy enough for kids of all ages to make. Pickling is also a healthy snack option with plenty of vitamins and minerals in each jar of sweet pickles in a jar purchased at the grocery store.
The best pickles out there will be those that have been fermented using traditional methods or those made using modern techniques like canning or using vacuum sealing machines. Either way, these treats will bring out all sorts of flavors from their ingredients—and that's what makes them so tasty!
Bread and butter sweet pickles
Bread and butter pickles are the perfect combination of sweet and sour. They're a great way to use up leftover bread, or you can make them with fresh bread if you have some on hand. If you want to add a little extra zip, try adding some spices like cinnamon or cloves.
You can freeze or refrigerate the pickles for later use.
You can freeze or refrigerate the best dill pickles for later use. If you have a surplus of pickles, they'll last even longer in the refrigerator. If you're planning on eating them right away and don't have time to wait for them to thaw, simply put them in a freezer bag and freeze overnight.
For those who love their pickles straight from the jar (and we totally do), nothing beats biting into a fresh dill spear straight from the jar! Just make sure that when opening it, there aren't any cracks on top because these will cause bacteria growth inside which could spoil your food if not removed immediately after opening—so just give yourself enough time before serving up those goods!
You can also eat home-cooked and homemade pickles in place of store-bought ones.
You can also eat home-cooked and homemade pickles in place of store-bought ones. These may be healthier, more fresh, and flavorful than store-bought pickles. They're also far more nutritious—and they'll cost you less!
The best part? You don't have to worry about preservatives or artificial ingredients in them (which is why many people avoid eating too much sodium). Instead of having a bag of processed cucumbers sitting on your kitchen counter for days at a time before being thrown away because they've gone bad, you could simply make some delicious homemade pickles with minimal effort on your part.
Why do pregnant women crave pickles?
If you're pregnant, pickles are a great way to get your calcium intake up without having to eat cheese. Vitamin C helps with iron absorption and is important for the immune system, so it's also great for pregnant women. Vitamin A can help prevent night blindness and promote healthy eyesight. Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting, so if you're looking for ways to boost your immunity during pregnancy (and beyond), look no further than pickles!
In addition to providing vitamins A and C, these delicious treats are also full of vitamin B6—a nutrient that helps keep skin healthy by preventing free radical damage caused by sun exposure or smoking tobacco products.* This means that even though they may not taste as good when compared against other cured meats such as ham or bacon (which have been preserved by smoking process), they contain similar amounts of beneficial compounds like nitrates which help protect against cancer development!
Pickles are simple and quick to make, and delicious tasting.
Pickles are a great way to use up leftover cucumbers or any other vegetable that might be in your refrigerator. They're quick to make, and can be seasoned with just about anything you have on hand—from dill seeds to garlic cloves and onion slices.
Pickles are delicious! They have a briney tang that makes them perfect for sandwiches or as an accompaniment for hot dogs (or any other meat), but they also make excellent condiments for dips like hummus and guacamole.
Conclusion
Making pickles probably won't make you rich, but it can and should bring you some satisfaction. Moreover, anyone who has made and eaten pickles on any level will tell you that making a batch isn't as easy as it looks. It might not be glamorous, but it is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Coffee
Coffee
Tumblr media
    Cappuccino Forest Hill Chase
As you may have guessed, Arabica coffee gets its name from Arabia, the land of kings. When it comes to coffee, Arabica is definitely king. As legend has it, a goat herd named Kaldi discovered coffee on the Arabian peninsula around 500-600 A.D. He observed his goats excited behavior after eating the red cherry-like berries of a coffee plant.
Cappuccino coffee has been one of the most popular drinks in the world for many years. The main reason for this is that they can be made at home with very little effort. This article will explain the three most common types of Cappuccinos and how to make them at home.
For those unfamiliar with this kind of coffee, espresso is simply coffee made by extracting hot water through coffee grounds and then using that liquid to brew the coffee. The process creates a much more intense drink with a lot more flavor and caffeine than other forms of coffee. A variety of methods can be used, but the best results are often achieved with the use of a pressurized espresso maker. These are a relatively new innovation, but they have become so popular that a wide variety of other brewing devices have been developed to work in conjunction with it. Some of the most popular espresso makers include; the K-Cup (which are the most widely used machine), the Intenso (which are also popular), the Cappuccino Maker (which are also highly popular), and the Keurig (which are actually a type of brewer).
Interestingly, C. arabica, is self-pollinating as opposed to C. robusta, which is not. This might explain why Arabica coffee is more abundant throughout the world. Also why it does well at higher elevations where bees might be less active due to cooler temperatures and why Robusta prefers lower, hotter, climates where bees are more plentiful. Just a theory but food for thought.
The earliest known coffeehouse opened in 1475 in Constantinople. But Starbucks definitely revolutionized the experience for American coffee drinkers and carried the modern coffeehouse into the 21st century.
One of the most important items in any coffee shop is the espresso machine. If your business doesn't offer this beverage, then you should definitely consider purchasing one. Espresso machines provide a rich and creamy flavor, a rich aroma, and the chance to add your own creative touches. You can choose from several different brands, but most of the top choices provide you with an endless amount of features and functions.
Another type of milk used in making coffee is skimmed. Although not as common as whole milk, skimmed milk is still used in many espresso drinks. It is still slightly less concentrated than whole milk, but it is still rich enough to give a good cup of espresso and it is more convenient than being able to keep it cold.
For coffee lovers who take time to select the right equipment, there are several products that are tailored to your shop owner's needs. Some include coffee brewers, coffee pods, and coffee grinders. When choosing the right equipment for your coffee shop, you need to choose only the coffee you want to serve.
When it comes to the actual style of the furniture, some cafe owners will choose to buy all their coffee equipment from one company. This means that they can create one single products to suit all their needs and this is beneficial because then the coffee products that they make are all the same and there is no confusion as to what to produce when making each product. This is also good for those wanting to ensure that they do not produce too many different types of coffee products.
Once you have the perfect cup of coffee, you will want to try several different types of Cappuccinos. Some people like to keep several varieties so they can try different kinds. So, when you are trying out different coffee shops to find the best cup of coffee for you, try them all!
While there is a lot of debate about the type of espresso that is best, most people agree that a light roast is best for drinking on its own, with a little milk or cream. A dark roast, like espresso from Italy or Chile, needs a little milk or cream to make the espresso taste better.
Think of this type of Cappuccino Machine as a new coffee machine that you buy. The espresso you make may be great but it may not be as great as the coffee you started off with.
Most of these machines are very cheap and easy to use. You just need to put the cappuccino in the machine and put it in the cup. You also need to put the espresso and the hot water in the machine. In addition to the type of maker you get, think about what kind of Cappuccino machine you need. A French Press or a Press Espresso maker will make the best espresso that you have ever had.

It's a natural non-artificial sweetener, and may or may not take you time to get used to.If you are looking to just reduce sugar in-take as a lifestyle change, and you are used to the sugar taste in your tea, coffee, cake mix, smoothie etc. then try adding one or two Stevia tablets along with a half, or one teaspoon of sugar, just so you still get the sugar taste. This is normal. Don't stress. Simply shake the dispenser and press again. It'll work.Perhaps a tablet will also get stuck in the hole. Simple fix would be to poke it back using a toothpick, or tap the dispenser on a hard surface.

How to Make Cafe Espresso at Home?
After you know how to make cafe espresso at home, you will never have to go to a fancy coffee shop again. It's easy to make a high-quality espresso at home! Here are a few tips to help you make perfect espresso:
Tumblr media
Properly prepared espresso is fruity, floral, and slightly sweet
A properly prepared cafe espresso is a rich, syrupy shot with a distinctive flavor. Espresso has notes of caramel, vanilla, red apple, and intense floral flavors. A good espresso will have an even layer of brown foam. To make your own espresso, learn how to taste coffee. Once you appreciate the taste, you can use these tips to make great coffee at home.
Bitterness is a quality sign
The bitterness of a cup of coffee is an indicator of its quality. In coffee, bitterness comes from chlorogenic acids. These acids are also found in tea, prunes, and peaches but do not taste bitter on their own. They change into lactones and phenylindanes, which give coffee its distinct taste. Dark roasts contain more of these compounds. However, it is essential to note that bitterness does not necessarily mean that the cup of coffee will be bitter.
Tumblr media
Too hard or soft water can affect your ability to make espresso
Water's chemical make-up can affect the quality of coffee you produce. If your water is too hard, it will be less soluble than tap water and may have high levels of magnesium and calcium. This can affect the strength of the coffee and make it taste more bitter. Water that's too soft will have low levels of these minerals and have poor extraction power. Therefore, a water sampler is a great way to tell if your water is too hard or soft.
Using a tamper
You can try making cafe-style espresso at home by using a tamper. It is a handy tool that compresses the coffee grounds using forty to 45 pounds of pressure. Make sure to clean your tamper properly to avoid denting it. You can also try running it under running water to remove any excess grinds that might have accumulated. After you have practiced a few times, you should be able to press the tamper with the appropriate pressure fairly consistently.
Grinding your coffee
When making cafe espresso at home, you need a coffee grinder with fine-grained burrs. The size of the grind depends on the type of coffee bean you're using and how long it's been exposed to water. Generally, you want your espresso to be finer than sand but not powdery. The ideal grind size is around 6 to 8 grams. Once you've found the perfect setting, you can weigh your coffee beans on a kitchen scale and then grind them to the proper size. To know more about espresso coffee click here.
Tumblr media
Adding water
Making cafe espresso at home is not nearly as difficult as it is at a high-end coffee shop, but there are some essential factors to consider. Adding the correct amount of water is critical. Water affects the taste of espresso, as it has many different PH balances and minerals. Also, the taste of the coffee will be affected if you use water with noticeable odors or flavors. You can use water test kits that can help you determine your water quality before brewing.
Tamping your shot
The most crucial part of tamping your shot when making cafe espresso at home is getting the grind just right. Uneven tamping can lead to uneven extraction and inferior flavor. When tamping your shot, use your elbow to bend at a 90-degree angle. This way, you'll have the right amount of pressure to get the grind just right every time. Also, making cafe espresso at home is locking the portafilter into the brew head, so you should then let the shot brew for about 25 seconds.

this is a continuation of the other one
Y/N stares at him for a long moment, arms crossed and poking her tongue into her cheek. “Why do I feel like I'm Ariel and you’re the sea witch trying to get me to sing into a shell?”
Harry blinks once. “Sorry, what?”
“Oh, right, that was—that was ‘89, wasn’t it?” Y/N bites back a laugh at the scowl that rolls over Harry’s expression. “After your time, I suppose.”
But Y/N isn’t laughing when she has to spend the next two weeks braless. And although she spends the first day being petty under Harry’s keen eye, by the third day, she’s turned the predicament around in her favor.
“Hey, Harry.” She says one night, stirring her pot of pasta on the stove as she sips her eleven dollar wine. “I have a question about our arrangement.”
Harry, who has been leaning over the counter to soak in the aromas of the food that he longs to taste (and also to get a look at Y/N’s cleavage in the v-neck t-shirt she’s wearing), cocks his head to the side and clicks his tongue. “If you're trying to reduce your sentence, don’t even try it.”
“No, no, it’s not that.” Y/N murmurs, trailing her lip around the rim of her wine glass as she leans against the counter. “I was just wondering if it has to be only braless with a shirt on top, or if I could wear just a bra or bralette.”
Harry blinks once, his mouth falling open in surprise. “I—what?”
“Like, I have this little cotton Calvin Klein bralette, and it’s super comfy, and still gives me some support, but my cleavage and such is still decently on display.” Y/N clarifies with a smug grin, setting down her glass against the fake marble counter as she stretches to reach the spice cabinet. “I think that could fulfill our agreement, no? You know what bralette I’m talking about, right? You’ve probably seen it when you’ve been snooping around.”
Harry looks at her carefully, trying to catch the trick behind her all-too generous offer. He replies in a measured tone, leaning against the fridge as his eyes glue to the way her chest heaves as she teeters forwards on her tiptoes to grab a condiment. “I know the one, yes. Peachy pink, right? With a thick band and slightly ruffled fabric at the center?”
“Thats the one, yup.” Y/N pops the last letter of the word, wiggling her fingers to try and grab the oregano from the highest shelf. “It’s a nice number, I think, and going around braless for so long does my back in sometimes.”
Harry pushes off the barrier he’s using as support, drifting towards Y/N as she stands before her cupboards, one hand propped against the counter to boost herself up as the other fishes for the small container a few inches from the tips of her fingers. He stops right beside her, looking down at her with that same calculating gaze he had across the room. He’s still trying to sus out her angle, but little does he know that what she’s trying to implement is going to work out for both of them.
She’s grown quite fond of the extra attention he’s been giving her, and for some odd reason, she feels a deep sense of pleasure every time she catches him staring at her chest. Maybe it’s the way his eyes glint longingly as he ogles, or the way he’ll chew into his cheek or along his bottom lip or into the side of his finger as he follows the outline of her cleavage, or maybe it’s that when she catches him gawking, he’ll hold intense eye contact with her for a second before casting his gaze away to some other unimportant object.
Maybe it was that one time yesterday where she’d managed to pull an actual reaction out of him. They had been watching a rerun of a Scooby Doo movie, and she could feel his ghastly eyes pinned to her bust, probably because she had lied down on her stomach across her sectional sofa as he had sat on the floor in front of it, so when he turned his head, her chest had been less than a foot away. And as if that wasn’t enough, she had purposefully flushed it against the couch cushion below to make it seem extra plump and appealing, which would have knocked the air from Harry’s lungs if he still had them.
He’d released a soft whimper so broken and needy, Y/N had to fight off a conceited grin to avoid letting him know she was doing this to him with actual intention. She’d pretended not to hear it, but she had allowed herself to indulge the flare of satisfaction that rose from watching him shift his sitting position a bit, as if something were growing heavy between his thighs. His actions had vaguely made her wonder if ghosts could even feel arousal, and if they could, she hoped he was. It was the perfect revenge, because she at least knows that he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. Not with anyone else, at least.
Y/N watches as Harry reaches an arm up, easily reaching the bottle she’s attempting to retrieve. He swipes his hand across the container, the motion managing to knock it off the shelf and into her awaiting palm. She’s learned that in order to touch objects, he has to put in quite a bit of energy and concentration to succeed in breaking through the dimensional barrier that separates the living from the dead. Garnering the slightest contact can sometimes drain him a great deal, so when he does make it his mission to touch something, he does it with as little impact as possible to save his energy for later, in case he wants to grab something for an extended period of time, or grasp a heavier weight that would require more exertion.
“Thanks.” She smiles up at him innocently, blinking her lashes with a slightly sultry air as she closes the cupboard slowly.
Harry swallows heavily, glimpsing down at where her chest is still heaving from when she’d made a grand effort to collect the ingredient she needed. He hates how his little cheeky plan had recently become the bane of his undead existence, given that Y/N had recently begun using it to her advantage. But he can’t complain, because he’s getting exactly what he asked for. He just wishes he could get more.
His voice comes out low and strained as his eyes coast back up to meet her own, which are dancing with smug amusement. “You’re welcome.”
“So what do you say?” Y/N asks, uncapping the spice and sprinkling a liberal amount into her sauce. “Think we could tweak our deal?”
Harry pulls himself back onto the counter, tapping his fingers against the surface without making a sound. “I suppose.” He replies after a moment, eyes flickering to Y/N’s chest once more as she leans down to taste the sauce. “The bralette should be fine, as long as it’s not too padded.” He shoots her a cheeky grin. “I like a bit of nipple, you know that.”
“You’re gross.” Y/N scoffs, shaking her head as she sets down the wooden spoon on the stove. “I'm gonna go change, then. Watch this for me, will you?”
And Harry does rather diligently, inhaling the flavorful aromas rising from the stove. He wishes, for the billionth time in his thirty odd years of death, that he could taste food. He knows he doesn’t need it, but even just having its essence pass over his tongue would be enough for him. He misses pasta, he thinks, staring longingly at the noodles boiling away on the stove. And pizza, and fish, and steak, cooked perfectly with a delicious side of mashed potatoes and gravy, just pink enough in the middle that it’s still tender—
“You didn’t burn down the kitchen. Good job!” Y/N’s voice calls from behind, and the ghost turns around with a retort on his lips that quickly falls away once he sees her.
She’s put on the bralette just as she said she would, and it’s everything he’s ever dreamed of. The cotton is thin enough that he can see the clear outline of what he wants through the article, and the halter neckline lands low enough that he can see every dip and curve of her breasts. A band of her stomach is exposed beneath the labeled elastic lining the bottom of the fabric, and the soft skin seems to call to Harry, making him desperate to touch it. Y/N’s decided to swap her sweatpants as well, it seems, as she’s now dressed in a loose pair of heather grey shorts that sit above her belly button and barely cover the curve of her ass. The loose legs flutter up with her every movement, and if she were about to bend over just a smidge, he could—
“How’s this?” The girl asks, flicking her loose hair over her shoulder with a simper. “Does it meet the requirements?”
Harry clears his throat, his words coming out as a pained groan. “God, you’re a fucking bitch, you know that?”
Y/N sputters into a round of airy laughter, coming to stand before him with her hands perched on her hips. Her tone is innocent, but her true intentions are written clear across her face, obvious in the way her lips twitch with evil delight. “How so? I’m abiding to our terms!”
“You’re giving me the world’s worst case of blue-balls, is what you’re doing.” Harry bites back, his sharp jaw clenching and full lips pressing into a bothered grimace. “And you’re doing it on fucking purpose.”
“You made your casket, now lie in it.” Y/N states brightly, shrugging her brows with finality.
“Harsh.” Harry mumbles, but he can’t fight off the amused grin that tweaks his dimples into place.
Harry slips off the counter again onto his feet, not being able to stay still. There’s a peculiar buzzing sensation coursing through each of his ghostly limbs, and anytime he stays put, it intensifies to the point where he feels like he’s going to explode into a shower of static.
He saunters up behind Y/N, looking over her shoulder as she regains her previous activity of mixing the contents in the pot while they simmer their way to completion. Despite not being able to touch her, he can still smell her just fine, and her homey scent of chamomile and jasmine are ever welcomed. She just smells so much like a girl, for a lack of a better explanation, and Harry hasn’t been this close to one his own age since before he passed. It’s driving him to the brink.
“I’d give you a taste if I could.” Y/N's soft, teasing voice echoes against his ears as she cranes her neck to look at him. “It’s a family recipe.”
“Yeah...” Harry locks eyes with her for a moment, and his hand instinctively reaches down to grasp at her waist. Instead of being met with the warm sturdiness of what he knows would be her silky skin, he’s met with the typical icy fizzing sensation that constantly haunts him whenever he tries to make contact with a living being. His digits pass right through her hip, though she barely seems to notice, the only palpable indication of his attempt being a cold breeze wafting across her flesh.
He knows it’s something that is extremely easy to brush off, usually as a simple draft from the air conditioning, given the similarities between the two experiences. And that’s exactly what she appears to do as she gives a light, dismissive shiver, not paying it any mind.
The ghost tries his best to keep his disappointment from registering in his mood, and his tone instead fills with an unreadable emptiness that only he can truly interpret. Below it lies a double meaning, and it has to do with way more than just the general desire to be able to experience the taste of good again; it holds a certain longing that pertains to a deeper type of hunger, but again, only he can truly decipher it. “Yeah, I can only dream of it.”
