I think there's value in working with a personal trainer or finding a credible paid program if you're starting a new type of fitness, especially if you have any physical disabilities or concerns, but once you're at the "I'm not good at this but I vaguely know what I'm doing" stage and don't intend to compete seriously or go pro any training program that costs money is probably not super worth it; most of them really do boil down to "do the thing slightly more/harder each week"

The title of this piece is “Benediction,” and if you’re Jewish and born in the last, oh, fifty years, you might be wondering what you’d get from a piece with that title.  The text is the Birkat Kohanim, the Priestly Blessing.  Which does fall under the general category of benedictions, I think.  Certainly there are churches that use it as a benediction.  So, yes, the title is technically accurate.

The composer is Cantor Ray Smolover (1921 - 2015), who was a hazzan, a composer, a voice teacher, and founder of the Opera Theatre of Westchester.  He was also politically progressive in the ways of the Reform cantorate -- I’ve interviewed several women who are part of the first serious generation of women cantors who told me that Ray Smolover was one of the people who encouraged them to become cantors -- in fact, I think he was urging women to apply to the cantorial school at Hebrew Union College, long before Debbie Friedman (after whom the school has been named since 2011) ever composed a piece of music.  In a lot of ways, Ray Smolover was one of the reasons that HUC ordains women cantors today.

Perele Feig (1910 - 1987) was one of the small cohort of women whom we know today as the performing khazntes, although they’ve only been seen as a group phenomenon long after they stopped performing.  She was born in Hungary (at that point, the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and emigrated to the United States as a small child.  She performed both live and on the WEVD Yiddish radio station in New York, well into the 1950s and 1960s.  The late 1960s was the era when a few women were just starting to serve synagogues as (unordained) cantorial soloists, inevitably causing the local newspaper to print an article with a breathless headline about a Girl Cantor, The First In The Country, Serving Local Synagogue, and the era when respected senior cantors like Raymond Smolover were starting to suggest that the best of their female voice students consider applying to “The School,” what is now the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College.

Perele Feig lived long enough to hear the fashion in Jewish liturgical music change, and also to see women composing new liturgical music and taking a place on the bimah.  I hope she was proud of them.  In turn, I hope that we, in the era of ordained women cantors singing beautiful soprano and mezzo pieces, can appreciate the low alto voices of women like Perele Feig, giving a new kind of life to the pre-Holocaust style of liturgy, and clearing the path for her future sisters in song.
