The fact that I've gotten a lot of discourse under my "canonically sexist" characters list, but absolutely none of it is pushback on Jay being included.

What do you think about S6 Jay? I've always felt conflicted about his character due to this season, (but that comes from the fact that Skybound is a total mess). I didn't like how he used his wishes to impress Nya so she would date him. It annoyed me that he kept making decisions that wronged his friends because he couldn't let go of the idea she didn't want a relationship with him. I'm conscious this is the consequence of the messy love triangle from season 3, but it would've been nice to see Jay growing up from his relationship with Nya. (And if the writers were so desperate to make Jay and Nya endgame, at least they could've shown us Jay apologizing for everything he did during the season (lying to his friends, not accepting her refusal). They could've shown us Nya bring up the love triangle, and why she went for Cole when she was with Jay. You know, resolve the problems in their relationship and the things each of them did).
But no, they show us Jay making his final wish: "I wish you had taken my hand, and no one ever found that teapot in the first place". That decision feels like he hasn't progressed about his relationship with Nya from the start of the season. At the beginning of Skybound, she clarifies she doesn't want to be with him, so why would Jay wish she had taken his hand? Like, she's dying, and he's still thinking about that moment. What the hell? There were so many ways that scene could've gone, instead of Jay making her do something against her will. (Kind of? I think that depends on the interpretation of each person).
On the other hand, I didn't like how Nya's feelings were handled. One of the main problems her character had to face in season 6 was feeling she wasn't able to choose her destiny. She found out she was destined to be with Jay, and Nadakhan was forcing her to be with him. She literally said she felt that her whole life had been defined by other people, rather than by herself. However, at the end of the season, Jay wishes she had done what she didn't want to do at first.
I don't know, Skybound feels like an amount of missed opportunities for Nya's and Jay's character development.
Oh, skybound. skybound.
This season is a disaster for me and probably the season I feel the most conflicted about.
Overall I think most of the characters this season are pretty ooc. From Cole making sexist jokes for no reason, to Lloyd remaining strangely quiet throughout the EP5 conflict, to Jay throwing his own friends' security out the window to be with Nya. NOT EVEN S3 JAY (which was also a low point) WAS LIKE THIS. Even with all of his insecurities or rivalry with him, as soon as the situation demanded it or Cole was in danger (S3EP9) Jay could focus on what was at stake.
Instead, for some reason during the middle of the season Jay is EXTREMELY desperate to be with Nya to the point that he doesn't even care about his own team.
Look, I don't even mind that they make a season where Jay is an asshole and has to confront the consequences of his actions to learn to be more mature and aware of what he does (most of my fics are like that anyway). Do they want to do a season where Jay lies until his mistakes blow up in his face and where his selfishness is finally tested? I'm on board. If there is something that makes him such an interesting character, it's his flaws. Jay is selfish, he lies very often, he is opportunistic, and that makes his arcs so different from everyone else's.
Now, I hate that this is all solely because of his obsession with Nya. I've said it before but the worst thing about Jaya is when she becomes Jay's only motivation and interest to do everything he does. The season punishes Jay for resorting to wishes, not for continuing to believe that he has the right to be with Nya as if it were a necessity for him. The moral of the season shouldn't be "if you wish something enough, you'll find a way to make it happen" but; you don't need to be with someone else to be happy. Jay doesn't have to depend on Nya for his own happiness, and the season surprisingly never says otherwise.
From start to the ending, Nya remains Jay's final motivation. Literally her final wish is him imposing her will on her again (I know the wish supposedly didn't affect Nya but I think it's a mistake to make a character's wishes remain static from the beginning to the end of history).
so basically the season is a bunch of wasted potential that could have been a really good season to develop both characters. There are good things in S6, I'm not going to deny it. Jay from EP6 onwards has some pretty good moments, like him learning to be a leader, showing that he is a capable and intelligent member who ends up motivating others (Jay inspiring people is a rant for another day). And it's probably the most seriously the show takes his character.
I think the season would be better if it ended up addressing other things as well. There are many hints of Jay feeling worthless, Jay being insecure because he is poor/weak, believing he needs to be with Nya to be happy. And the season doesn't do much with this anyway. So, wouldn't it be better if the season wasn't Jay and Nya getting back together, but rather Jay realizing his own worth as a person? What if Jay resorts to wishes because he doesn't feel valuable as a member of the team? because he starts to believe that Nya is a better blue ninja than him? Or because his powers begin to fail and weaken as he is not maintaining his true potential by allowing himself to be consumed by his own insecurities? There are MANY ways to resolve this conflict without having Nya come back to him as some kind of prize.
...This is spoilers for my Skybound rewrite btw
but yeah, I agree with everything you say, Jay and Nya deserved better this season and I think what affected it the most was making the ending have to be these two getting back together with just ONE episode of them speaking sincerely
Sorry for the long post, Ty for the ask! ^^

So I used to like, violently HATE Skybound for a few reasons, but I've actually grown to really like it over time (especially after realizing how much Jayngst potential there is. I love torturing these characters) but I still feel the need to get into why I didn't like it in the first place. So let'sa go or whatever. -Nya's character arc. It's a good arc, in concept, but the execution was honestly TERRIBLE. Something my gf said was "The worst thing you can do for a girl's arc (specifically "feminist" arc) is to tell it from the perspective of a man who wants her". -Why is everyone sexist for no reason. They were not sexist before. Cole makes some shitty joke and then goes back on it two seconds later but HE STILL MADE THE JOKE??? AND LLOYD LAUGHED??? Lloyd was sexist in a little boy way he should've grown out of this by now. Dareth should not be this much of an ass I won't forgive them for massacring my boy. (can't just go Jeffing everyone like that!) -Some of that dialogue tho. Like some of it was meant to be cringey but Nya's death line was STUPID. "The greatest love stories do end in tragedy" what kind of bullshit??? I hc that she was trying to make a joke in that moment cuz if she meant that I'mma throw hands. Also why was Lloyd british for two seconds ("I think we ought to follow 'im!" what is that??) Anyway other than those things it's actually a really good season and I should've stopped hating on it a long time ago.

These are just my little rambles abt season 6 of ninjago. Sorry, but it’s gonna be very unorganized. Also I haven’t watched Skybound in about a year, so I’m probably gonna be misremembering some stuff
So, for starters, there’s a bit that it did really, and I mean *really* well. And that’s Jay’s characterization. In that he’s treated as an actual person. He gets called out and fucked over for the shit he does. Hell, Nadakhan calls him out for using humor as a coping mechanism. Then there’s also that. Nadakhan is a pretty good villain. He’s got realistic motivations, an actual arc into madness, the works.
Theres also the shit that Skybound fucked up. Namely, everything else. The prison arc didn’t need to happen, and very much shouldn’t have. It didn’t make sense for everyone to immediately believe the ninja went rogue. Ignoring that, every other ninja was fucked up characterization-wise in some way (fr tho, why did Cole have to be sexist). Even the characterization they give in the season is wonky at times. Nya has an entire rant where she resents how she isn’t really autonomous, relative to the other ninja, and then sacrifices herself to have Jay save her.
Even with all the bad stuff, I could forgive everything if it weren’t for the ending. The timeline didn’t need to reset, and the fact that it did just stopped any reason for growth, because it’s a serialized show that purely exists to sell toys, so who needs that?
I used to think I loved Skybound, but I just loved that it focused on Jay and Nya’s relationship, also pirates. But it feels too fanfic-esque

RuneWater Head Cannons and re writing literally all of Skybound
~Kai and Jay were the only ones who knew For like the longest time Jay kept the fact he knew a secret They were really low key Literally no one else knew
~One day after a mission May almost dies And Nya just kisses her in front of everyone After that they were a bit more public
~Hugs May will just run up to Nya and bear hug her from behind Nya does that one hug where they hug your hips
~They're actually really intimate with one another Nya is like her comfort blanket If Nya isn't right beside her or in her eyesight May gets really nervous Nya positively loves to kiss her on the cheek And nose And forehead And pretty much anywhere
~Inside jokes They bounce off each other super well May will just whisper "corn nuts" and Nya will lose it Usually their jokes involve Jay "Why you mad Jay?" "Yeah, you look a bit.. BLUE" "are you fucking kidding me"
They and P.I.X.A.L and Zane compete for best couple Everyone ships them Cole feels a little weird but he's pretty chill with it Jay is the only one who didn't like them
He was so mad for the longest time Wouldn't talk to May Refused to even look at Nya Was always really tense at breakfast Lost his shit once when May complemented Nya's hair Yelled at everyone and ran off Cole ended up finding him (b r u i s e) After that he still felt awkward but is really supportive
They fight together so well May is always spinning her stick and Nya just hurls water at anyone They’ve saved each others lives more times than they can count
(ha ha time to go into skybound HA) May was honestly really mad when Dareth wouldn't let her on the team Nya actually announced on television that she was dating May The whole Cole and Jay fighting over her still dropped pretty quickly after that Nya gave May a reassuring hug after Nelson say "Call me the purple ninja" May can't really do Airjistzu that well either so they sit there in supportive silence on the helicopter May teased Nya about her blond wig but actually thought she looked really pretty In prison they got really touchy with eachother May constantly clung to her at all times May didn't know how to feel when they found out Nya looked like Delarah Hates Nadakahn with a fiery passion After they talk with Jay outside the police station May and Nya end up clinging to each other while Nya feels guilty Jay ends up wishing for the money to win Nya back, instead of being able to give her what she wants When they go over to Cliffs house, May is really suspicious Even while they're looking at the map to the tiger widow May tells her she knows somethin's up Was genuinely afraid of losing her when the storm started and ended up shielding her the whole time When they ended up crashing on the island, May felt Zane die inside of her and Nya could tell May doesn't stick up for Jay either when Cole tells everyone about Jay's wishes Jay ends up spitting at her that the're adopted and May just stands there for the longest time Nya holds her hand the whole time May is terrified of giant monsters so when the Tiger Widow comes out she screams at the top of her lungs and runs, dragging Nya with her They both feel really guilty when Jay gets captured When Lloyd and Cole start making sexist jokes and Nya shuts them down May shoots them such a glare that they both suddenly have busniess away from them May starts panicking when the worms come up But ends up hugging her girlfriend for doing Airjitzu Desperate looks on the raft Ends up punching Ronin "fuckin bitch got my arm chopped off and fucked up my eye let me at em-" "May sweetheart no-" Actually impresses everyone with her pirate voice Puts up an insanely good fight when Nadakahn tries to take Nya, but ends up getting thrown in the brig Fucking slams into Jay and cries Doesn't use a single wish Ends up finding Amythist and Am takes her to the lighthouse before Nya and Jay When the other two show up, Amythist doesn't understand whats going on and tries to take May May is held in Ams' claws so she can't see the others but when she turns around her and Nya fucking run May gushes over Echo so much and Nya kinda worries Is really unsure what to say when Nya starts ranting All three of them are literally the best fighters together There ends up being just enough Travelers Tea for two people and Nya pushes Jay and May into it (kisses may tho) The two end up in the junkyard May growls at her parents that she knows shes adopted They end up reconciling though May is very very reluctant to work with Ronin "Only to save my girlfriend." Rescue mission doesn't go as planned May ends up getting tangled in a rope and slams into a window Essentially this vine Low key Nya looked hot in the dress They steal the blade and run back When Jay gets struck by it the pain physically hurts her so much she stabs herself with the sword to go after him "Let's go crash a wedding!" When they bust down the door and Nya's married May just screams "fUcK oFf" and charges Ends up failing Hates every second that Nya is Delarah Nya's death. NYA'S DEATH oooh boi A cannonball to May's chest. Like hole opened up inside of her. Nya died in her arms, she failed to protect the only person she ever truly loved. And so she wished. "I wish you had taken my hand, and no one ever found that teapot in the first place." As it all resets, May and Nya are the only ones who remember it. Jay gets flashes here and there, but thinks of it all as a dream. He still gets tense when ever someone mentions wishes, though he can't explain why.
I didn't expect this to be so long! Don't expect a new chapter out of me anytime soon, I'm obsessing over RuneWater.
