Do elves have any sports that humans wouldn’t know about or wouldn’t be able to play? Any games specific to moonshadows?

Sixsquare is a very Moonshadow game. Think of it like football--or soccer--if your playing field were an invisible cube deep in the forest. It comes with two modes, too:

Light mode is the daytime version, and full Moonshadow form is not allowed since not everyone can enter it without a full Moon. 

Shadow mode is for full moon nights, and all players must be able to manifest their full Moonshadow forms and hold them for the duration of the match. If you flicker back on, you have to sit out. And the ball only lights up when it’s in motion, so it’s really embarrassing if it rolls under a bush somewhere and goes out and no one can find it.

Featherball is another favorite. The ball is made from woven nightsprite feathers, which have a tendency to, ah, portal unexpectedly, based on the creatures’ natural illusion defense mechanism. The best part about playing featherball is that you can solo play it, and still lose.

What were some games you, Runaan and Rayla would play?

I always liked to build things out of adoraburrs with Rayla. Runaan wasn’t always patient enough for sitting still and constructing things, but he did give me the idea for Tiadrin’s sword by whipping around a long string of adoraburrs one day while play dueling with Rayla.

Sixsquare is far more Runaan’s speed. You can play it in a court, but as long as you designate six targets across all three dimensions, you can really play it anywhere. Anywhere in the Forest, that is. And I always had fun enchanting different colors for the targets, so when the ball we kicked around struck true, it would light up. I kept trying to add music to the target spells, but Runaan said it wasn’t a natural noise for assassin training. Everything has to be training, I suppose. Party pooper. 

So one day I added animal noises to the enchantments instead. Runaan struck the first goal--naturally--on the tree limb designated as the top target--naturally--with a flying leap from one tree branch to another--naturally--and when it touched, the loudest, most surreal ancient moonelk call echoed through the whole forest.

I could barely see him try and leap in six directions at once because I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. I swear, I couldn’t breathe without wheezing for an hour. 

After Runaan’s hair stopped standing on end, he hopped down from his tree, handed me the ball, and quietly forfeited. He couldn’t even find any words, and when he looked me in the eye, there was a dangerous twinkle there.

Rayla asked if we were done already, and Runaan admitted that we were, but he’d make it up to her with some Moonberry Surprise, so she was pretty pleased.

Runaan decided that the best way to pay me back was to make me make loud noises, too. I’m not sure I learned the lesson he intended. But then again... maybe I did.

When Rayla was growing up, what did she like to play with? What were her favorite games?

Hide and go seek is always fun when you play with Moonshadow elves, especially on full Moon nights! Runaan would play tracking games with her and reward her with moonberries when she could name animals and plants on sight while we were on walks together. We’d play featherball and sixsquare, too--games of accuracy and speed, very good for the reflexes! You can guess who didn’t win those. *points at my own chest with thumbs*

I’d carve her all kinds of little toys and friends, out of wood and metal--snakes, birds, froggies, adoraburrs. Though she preferred the real ones, and often came home with her hair full of them! It got so bad at one point that I planted a patch of meadow grass outside the tree at the base of the steps, and all the adoraburrs Rayla brought home got to live there until she headed back to the real meadow the next day. And of course she spent time with my Shadowpaw, but she’d always come back in from visiting him with her hair licked squint on one side.
