Runaan and Ethari used their moon opal pendants for themselves and then passed that power on to Rayla and Callum, to use for themselves. Generational gifts of love and protection ftw.

Would love to see that power move in the other direction with the moon phoenix feather that Callum and Rayla used to defy death in the world beyond life and death! If Callum saved that feather after all it did for him and Rayla (because of course he did), and he gives it to Ethari to help him retrieve Runaan from the coin, that would be a great sign of Callum taking his place not as a mere consumer of gifts - a child's role - but as a bestower of them as well. As one who has the power to be patient and reliable and assist adults with their own problems.

And it would establish a new cycle of equality. How's Runaan going to protest Rayla dating Callum after Callum literally handed Ethari the tool he needed to save Runaan's soul? Checkmate, you broody grump. :)))

Also it might bring an end to Callum's Ruining Magical Artifacts Era... But probably not.

I assume they’re going to recognise her because she hasn’t really changed that much. Her face isn’t as round, but she’s really just an older version of the girl they left behind. She even has the same markings (oooh, now headcanoning she deliberately keeps the same markings because subconsciously she’s afraid of them not recognising her). She also looks a lot like her parents (especially Tiadrin), so that would surely register with them.

I think they might struggle to believe what they’re seeing though, that so much time has clearly passed. I think that will be very emotional and traumatic for all involved. I think even Runaan will be initially shocked that Rayla is an adult now, compared to the “child” he last saw in Katolis.

Regardless of their reaction, I assume it will fuel many an angsty fanfic post decoining.

[ Sidenote: granted, some of the fic is different than where it's gone in canon, largely Callum being 100% devoted in getting the parents back, but struggling hard with Runaan upon his de-coining significantly moreso than Ez, who in this version has had 4 years with his grief and 4 years of getting to know Ethari as well. But for being written in Jan 2020, not bad, I think. ]

In all seriousness: I think Ezran's lack of connection to Rayla's past (never been to the Silvergrove, never met Ethari) and his harsher reaction to Harrow's death, especially given Callum's automatic positive reaction to the coins in 5x04 (including Runaan!), means that they're gonna go for a contrast with the broyals. It seems that in his closeness with Zubeia, Ezran's heaped a lot of the blame onto Runaan (which makes sense on a certain level - Zubeia didn't know about Zym's survival, Runaan did and went through with shit anyway) because well... It's always gonna be easier to compartmentalize. It's always gonna be easier to just hate someone who's dead.

Until they're not.

I also think Runaan could be a catalyst for a lot of wonderfully messy 'uglier' Ezran emotions (resentment towards Callum and Rayla keeping something from him again; the burden of ruling he only has because of Runaan; impatience with people not willing to consider ending the Cycle, ironically leading him to perpetuate it a bit, etc etc) and god I am so fucking excited for that. And a bonus Harrow-Viren parallel conflict with Callum, generations wise? Chef's kiss. Delicious. Give it to me

To me, I don't think Callum is even really thinking about "this is the man that murdered my father" (which he did in Through the Moon during a brief argument with Rayla, and then realized he needed to give space for her grief, too) so much as "This is Rayla's dad and someone she loves."

In his short story Inheritance he couldn't even hold the bow without immediately freaking out, and we see it ignite a similar sort of panic in 5x01, but by the end of the episode he's brought the bow into his room to hold onto it for her and hands it to her outright. He's willing to mix his magic with it and trust it (and her wielding it) to defend him.

So for Callum I think he'll be snarkily done with Runaan if the man is unremorseful / hostile but not willing to or wanting to pick too many fights with him in front of Rayla. (I also have a lot of thoughts and feelings about Callum ultimately realizing that Runaan's eventual awkward form of parenting/looking out for him -- once Runaan's gotten over his anti-human shit -- does remind him of Harrow as a father, but that is delved into Much better slowburn wise in the fic linked above).

For Ezran, who's younger and has largely been bottling this anger up, I think he might be harsher and more resistant to undoing the coins, but might have an easier time once he can see and get to know Runaan as a person (because once that's clicked into place, Ezran's empathy knows little to no bounds) and well, Ez loves Rayla too! They're all family. It's just... complicated

That said the fact that my 2019 political trio theory has now structurally also come back to me is Hysterical and what I'm holding onto above all else tbh

Did Tiadrin, Lain, Ethari, and Runaan meet Rayllum's babies?

I’m not sure, but let’s assume they do!

Rojen and Runaan have similar personalities in some ways—sharp, focused, dedicated, and rather grumpy—and get along famously. Runaan was extremely hesitant about Rayla’s marriage to Callum, and it’s not until Rojen’s birth that he’s won over (though he never admits it).

Aylin is very attached to Ethari. They’re both homebodies, and she spends hours chattering his ear off while they bake together. When she’s older, he also teaches her a bit of metalworking. She has no interest in weapons, but she loves making jewelry and other trinkets!

Saija thinks her grandmother Tiadrin is just about the coolest person ever. Rayla wonders why she finds Grandma’s Dragonguard stories so much more interesting than her own (Callum assures her it’s a just grandparent thing).

Elias, to everyone’s surprise, is closest to Lain. He’s a quiet child, but somehow Grandpa always gets him to giggle.

After Runaan is freed from the coin and has healed enough, he and Ethari renew their wedding vows. Everyone cries that day, Bait and Callum included. Rayla is both of their best mans. Stella is the flower girl. Callum and Runaan have Bonding Time when Runaan gets nervous and Callum hypes him up. Lain and Tiadrin calm Ethari down when he gets nervous and starts rambling. Ethari has a special surprise piece of jewelry he made Runaan. Runaan is awestruck at the dragon queen and prince themselves showing up, and at many of the other changes because he's been gone for two plus years. There are many, many Feelings, but all feelings and change are good.

what’s the reversing effect and reversed reflection? i’m a bit confused from this point, i looked a bit into one-way glass and im still confused yeah :P

somewhat unrelated but this theory is SO` much to me if it’s true bc i’ve been wanting to write aaravos povfor ages and it would basically solidify that 1. aaravos can see out of the mirror when the other side is still light as long as his side is dark (it wasn’t clear in canon if both sides had to be dark for him to see out) and 2. he can tell when he’s being watched and 3. i just find it interesting that he would have possibly been watching runaan in this case so yeah odsjfsdkafasldjfsldkf so yea i’d really like to learn more about what it means/is based on 🙏

Aww I love this old theory! The tldr is this: when someone's reflection in a surface is backward from how it should appear, there's magic involved.

We see this happen multiple times, but not everywhere that it probably should, so it could just be a repeated animation error. Still, it's been entertaining to think about, all these years.

Runaan's reflection should show his chest markings and broken horn on the other side of his body if this was just a normal mirror reflection, but instead it looks like we're looking directly at him, instead of at a mirror image. It could've been a single error with his reflection, but since I found more like this, it made me think the mirror might be up to something.

Rayla's reflection in Ethari's sword is actually correct - but Ethari's is wrong. You can see his fringe right there in the frame, yet it's not reflected correctly, it's oddly on the far side of his face, which should not be possible unless magic is at work. Or, again, animation error.

I thought this might have to do with the fact that he ghosted her, and the Moon magic was affecting the reflection. But in the pond outside the tree house, both of their reflections are correct. So hmm.

And here's Viren, before and after "activating" the magic mirror. If you watch his hair specifically, you can see his reflection goes one way, and then the other. This felt deliberate, and made me think there was something to the other scenes, and to the idea as a whole.

When the dragang looks into the mirror back in the Storm Spire in S4, everyone's reflections are correct, but we don't get a shot of them just as the mirror is turning on.

In the end, it's inconclusive. It's very possible that, in earlier seasons, more reflection errors just happened and no one caught them, but as time went on more of those scenes were animated correctly. Time will tell, but honestly I've set this theory down as "it's really fun but I don't think it's canon."

As for your points, I would love for Aaravos to have the power to look out anytime he wanted to. His powers are diminished, but he's still incredibly gifted with magic. If he could see out at any time, that gives him so much information to work with! He would have seen any conversations that Avizandum and Zubeia had. He'd have seen Zym's egg. He'd have seen Viren pondering how to turn the thing on.

And just like you mentioned, he'd have seen Runaan getting coined. I've checked - the mirror was definitely pointing in such a way that an observer would have seen it happen.

These are all situations that give Aaravos information, which is his bread and butter when he's trying to get what he wants - freedom. So I do hope he can do that.

One thing he can definitely do is your 2nd point, though! When the dragang and Zubeia turned the mirror on in the Storm Spire, Aaravos immediately knew even though his back was to the mirror, and he turned around to approach, seeking who had activated it.

The way that little spin immediately told on him for fooling Viren back in S2 though 😂 omg. All that business with adjusting cloaks and going in and out of doors and pretending to search the shelves for a book but just leaving instead, and the great dramatic reveal that Aaravos could also darken his room and see Viren, thereby catching up to the great and clever human mage and owing him everything for making contact... it was all for show!

Aaravos knew Viren was there from the very beginning, just like he knew Callum was there, and he led him a merry chase, getting him curious and intrigued and hungry for power before closing the trap and binding them together with the caterpillar spell that resulted in Sir Sparklepuff and a (hopefully) foolproof way to free him from his prison as long as the human played his role.

Oops!

The mirror is broken now, so we might not get any further lore or interactions with it, but it sure was a fun magical artifact. I'm never going to look at a reflective surface quite the same again.

in character design to show when a character has an emotional change they have a physical change (and them looking the same shows how they’ve not progressed emotionally, like Claudia) E.G. haircut/outfit change, do you think that when Rayla fully overcomes her emotional arc she’ll change her facial markings?

As someone who’s given Rayla at least two traumatic haircuts, I love visual change as an emotional shift as trope, buuuuut I do think we’re unlikely to see much in the way of design change for Rayla between now and the end of the series. With only 18 episodes to go, I don’t think there would be time more than anything.

I think we’ll see Rayla certainly dealing with her issues with her parents leaving and how that affected her and her character arc, but there’s also Runaan and their relationship, his relationship with her and Callum and potentially/hopefully Rayllum, Runaan and Ezran requiring focus. Ethari is also going to come into play. Moon fam is messy and have a lot of things they need to work though.

During the world ending.

It’s… a lot. And while I think TDP does an amazing job of focusing on trauma and how it can affect people, I just don’t think there’s enough episodes to do deal with everything they’ve set up there. Not in a “resolved to the point where I’m a healed person and can move on” type thing. Not truthfully, at least.

Even with two seasons left, I actually think we’ll see the beginning of the rebuilding of some of those relationship and a general nudge to the fact they’re being repaired but I assume the actual grunt work of resolving decades long issues (in some cases) will take more than some Big Feelings Time and a hug.

And they could certainly show that process has begun via Rayla changing her markings but I don’t think there’s been enough time spent on showing that elves can and do change their markings, and why they might.

I think we might well get some character design changes but I’m more side eying Callum and his hair. So if he’s pushed into actually doing dark magic, potentially even to release Moon fam, I think something like that would be far more impactful.

What I think we might see is Rayla with different markings if we get a flashforward though. If we got something a few years down the line, Adult King Ezran, much bigger Zym, parental Rayllum with a kid or two and perhaps something along the lines of meshing their two cultures together via their chosen markings?
