(requested by calligomiles; continuing from this)
Rosa pressed the ‘Enter’ key for the final time that night with a sigh of relief. “We’re free, Kit-Kat; the Doctor can take care of things from here. Let’s go home.”
“Finally!” Swire launched herself back from her desk, her chair bouncing off the back wall as she did. “I hate doing inventories. Wanna celebrate?”
“If that celebration is lying back on the couch with a Kit-Kat and tub of ice cream while the radio’s playing, then yes.” The heiress logged off and reached for her coat-
-only for a Feline to latch onto her back before she could pull it on. “How’s that a celebration? We just finished a month’s worth of work with a week to spare - the Doctor’s giving us that week off anyway, so why not do something fun tonight? We’ve got a whoooole week to chill out, Nat.”
“And I, for one, would love to have an eighth day of the same.” She sighed. “At least can we wait to go out until tomorrow?”
“Oh, um, sure, I guess. Sorry, I didn’t realize you were that tired.” The money-cat slipped off of Rosa’s back to let her put her coat on.
The Ursus did that before giving her a peck on the cheek. “It’s fine, darling. We can order something nice for dinner, and I have a bottle of Siracusan wine in a cabinet for us to share. Will that do?”
“I’m fine with anything, I guess,” she shrugged as they walked across the threshold. “Whatever makes you happy.”
“In that case, I do want to stop at Closure’s for that ice cream...”
The walk to the shop was short - there were a number of her convenience store style grab-n’-gos sprinkled throughout the ship - but upon entering, the heiress realized it would be a tad more time-consuming than expected as a familiar face popped up from behind a shelf. “Natalya? Long time no see!”
“Good evening, Rada.” She flashed her a smile as she and Swire continued walking to the back and towards the chef. “Stopping by for a late-night snack?”
“Greyy and I are picking up a few things for dinner. Hi, Kit-Kat! Just get off of work, too?” Gummy, as one might expect from her role in the Rhodes Island food chain, already knew her.
Swire nodded. “Yeah, we’re heading back to her place, just getting Nat some ice cream before then. Vanilla, babe?”
“Oh, right, I hadn’t decided on the flavor yet...See if they have coffee for me?” The Feline stole a kiss before wandering back to the freezer, leaving Rosa with a somewhat confused Rada. “I suppose it has been a while, hasn’t it?”
“I knew you both worked in Logistics, but that was about it. Good for you! Ooh, maybe we can go on a double date sometime?” Her eyes were sparkling in that uniquely Rada way the heiress had only rarely seen in her time with the Group-
The moment was cut short by the return of Greyy with a basket of vegetables. “I think I found everythi- ah! G-good evening, miss.”
“Oh, Greyy,” the chef giggled. “This is Natalya. She used to be in the Group before, uh...Actually, why did you stop coming by?”
“I-”
The money-cat saved her with two gallons of coffee ice cream in a basket. “Found it! ‘Scuse me, Greyy. We ready to go?”
“Um, yes, let’s.” Rosa gladly took the lifeline with a small wave goodbye. “My number hasn’t changed if you want to set up that double-date?”
“Oh! Awesome! I’ll talk to you later!” With that, the couples went their separate ways - one towards the counter, the other further back into the shop for more ingredients.
Ice cream in the back of a cart, Natalya’s mind drifted to questions. Questions she still hadn’t gotten around to asking after a couple of weeks with Swire; questions which tonight would be as good as any to ask. “Kit-Kat?”
“Yeah, Nat?” The Feline had been lost in thought herself. “Wanna go back for some chocolate?”
“No...not this time, at least. How much do you know about me, beyond what I’ve told you myself?”
She turned to look at her with a raised eyebrow. “Some stuff, I guess. I read your bio when I worked at HQ.”
“Oh, I see. That explains how you knew my name.” A constantly-whirring gear in the back of her mind was allowed to stop at last. “You know about the Group, then?”
“Of course - I mean, doesn’t everyone? Gummy, Istina, Zima, Leto, and you, the Ursus Student Self-Governance Group...At least, you used to be.” Swire felt a subtle change in the air and squeezed the Ursus’ hand.
The heiress squeezed back. “I’d say I’m a ‘former member’ these days. Son- The Gene- Zima and I had a falling out not long after arriving here, and though I suspect I’d be fine to go back from her perspective, I’ve gotten used to the distance between us. If that makes sense.”
“What’d you two fight about?” Considering her girlfriend’s usual patience (excepting after enough drinks or a bit of honey), it must’ve been serious. “Was it about Peterheim?”
“...In a sense,” she managed through gritted teeth and short breath.
By this point, they were back at Rosa’s place by the power of motorized transport. “You don’t have to keep going-”
“I need to.” The pair was still seated in the cart, the Ursus’ eyes tightly shut as her and Sonya’s voices echoed in her mind’s ear. “After I told the Doctor about my experience there, I told the others that I’d done so, and Sonya was mad at me. She said some things I don’t want to repeat, I said some things I’ll never say to another person again as long as I live, and despite Rada’s best efforts, I knew I couldn’t stay under the same roof as them any longer. So, I moved here, and I haven’t heard much from them since. Some of that might be them not realizing my mobile number hasn’t changed, admittedly.”
“...Wow. You miss them?”
Natalya let her head fall onto the dashboard. “Mhmm.”
“Oh, Nat...” The Feline slipped out of the cart to get the ice cream before wheeling around to the passenger-side door. “Let’s go inside. I don’t think cuddling out here in the cart will be good on our spines.”
“J-just a moment.” She sniffled a few times, doing her best to clean herself up before getting up.
When she did get up to head inside, the money-cat had already brought their treat (and the delivery waiting for them at the door) in and was waiting at the threshold to snuggle-trap her. “Theeere we go.”
“Th-thank you for taking care of the f-food.” The sudden embrace knocked a couple more stray tears from her eyes. “D-do you-”
“Shhhhhh. Let’s go cry it out, hmm?” Swire broke off the hug to walk her back to her room, grabbing the bag with the ice cream (and the spoons she slipped in) on their way there.
It wasn’t quite the quiet night she’d wanted...but it was what she needed.
