the thing about Shrike responding conversationally to the cat is that he can probably actually talk with it.
Aubrey, Morgan, and Enzo are just being polite.

Sunday Snippet from my gay Victorian cross-class romance, Mr Warren’s Profession, featuring hurt/comfort and a happily-ever-after – available now wherever fine books are found!
~
“Then to business: our dear Lindsey, and his best interests.”
Aubrey resisted the urge to plant his forehead in his palms. “If I may be so bold as to interrupt, I believe I’ve already held this conversation with Sir Lindsey’s friends.”
“Have you?” said Miss Althorp coolly. “And what sort of conversation was it?”
“The sort where I’m told to bring no harm to Sir Lindsey, lest greater harm fall on my head.”
Miss Althorp caught a fluttering laugh in her delicate fingers. In response to Aubrey’s bewildered expression, she replied, “That wasn’t the conversation I had in mind. I intended to congratulate you on the happiness you’ve brought Lindsey, and to express my hope that you’ll continue to make him just as happy in the future.”
Aubrey thought it was rather the same talk dressed up in different clothes, but kept that thought to himself.

Hold Fast 2 – Hold Faster is up on Patre♡n! Wherein we glimpse the ongoing romance of Morgan Turner and Sir Evelyn Winthrop.
~
Morgan raised an eyebrow. “Did you enjoy traveling as a merchant seaman?”
“It had its moments,” Evelyn admitted.
“Do tell.” The trace of a smile graced the corners of Morgan’s lips, which was as good as a grin on another man’s face. “The boiler room, for one.”
This statement did nothing to dispel Morgan’s bemusement. “I never realized you had such a passion for coal.”
“I could take or leave the coal. My fellow stokers, on the other hand…” Evelyn trailed off just long enough for Morgan to catch his drift before he dove ahead. “Six brawny men to each furnace, all stripped to the waist.”
Morgan’s bemusement vanished.
Evelyn continued. “Sweat gleaming in the firelight as we bend and twist to shovel coal. Thrusting our lances into the flames and withdrawing to feed the draught.”
A hard swallow traveled down Morgan’s slender throat.

Thanks to Karen for this delightful review of Throw His Heart Over!
~
This is a sequel to "Mr. Warren's Profession" and follows the relationship of Sir Lindsey Althorp, a sweet-natured baronet, and Aubrey Warren, a low-born engineer. Since the first book ended rather abruptly, I was pleased this book continued their story, because they are both so, so lovely and so lovely together. In "Throw His Heart Over," there are some challenges, similar to what was in the first book, but Nothwell manages to make them fresh and simultaneously deepen the MCs' relationship. Nothwell obviously does his research into things like engineering, horseback riding, and painting, and if you are a nerd who enjoys detailed descriptions of these things (as I am) this book will be right up your alley.
~
Throw His Heart Over is the second book in the Aubrey & Lindsey series, a gay Victorian romance available wherever fine books are found!

Sunday snippet, 9.22.18
From Throw His Heart Over, an equestrian-themed sequel to Mr Warren’s Profession.
-
“How would you like to see me painted?” Lindsey asked. “Standing in the library? Or laid out like Venus of Urbino?”
“If you mean without your clothes on, I can’t say I’d mind it.” Aubrey said, his smile matching Lindsey’s. “Though I don’t think you could hang it in the family gallery.”
“Standing in the library for the gallery, then,” Lindsey conceded. “And a reclining nude for you.”
Aubrey’s cheeks had once again turned a charming shade of porcelain pink, like the inside of a seashell. “If you’re offering.”
“I am. Volunteering, even. With enthusiasm.”
“Then as long as you are,” Aubrey added, not meeting Lindsey’s twinkling eyes, “perhaps you’d also sit for something smaller. And more… traditional.”
“Interesting euphemism for ‘put your clothes back on,’” Lindsey mused aloud.

@mwritesink  replied to your post: “wordcount Wednesday, 9.5.18”
the question is if it's Aubrey's ribs or Lindsey's ribs
The eternal question! Soon... an answer.
