saw this Rhombodera basalis mantis nymph was reaching out for a perch and I offered it my hand. stayed remarkably calm and still before I took it to the other side of the path
Rhombodera is one of several mantis genera that have developed a flat, shield-like pronotum. not one of the more delicate mantises, this one was impressively bulky and heavy but still so elegant
extremely powerful forearms. I would’ve liked to see it hunting!
I just woke up from an hour long nap on the plane, if you could call that a nap. I was watching the second episode of “Unstable” and had a chicken BBQ bun that didn’t taste like BBQ at all, before I finally dozed off.
I was about to try to go back to sleep since we’ve got an hour more to go before we land, but I couldn’t, so I munched on the remaining pieces of my Sour Power twizzlers.
Then I…

14th February as we all know is the day of love, recognized and celebrated worldwide as Valentine’s day. As exciting as it is, somehow it always seems to sneak up on most of us. Could it be because we’re still reeling from the Christmas and New Year aftermath? Who knows.
spiny, long-legged, and armored, Polyrhachis ants are a common sight in Singapore as they forage for their colonies in a perpetual breakneck sprint. but this creature is no Polyrhachis: this is a jumping spider that looks and moves exactly like one!
he is Toxeus maxillosus*, one of the finest ant mimics I’ve seen.
an elongated first set of legs mime questing antennae while the rest are perfectly sized to match Polyrhachis’ gait. his enlarged chelicerae appear like an ant’s head, and the illusion is completed by pedipalps slung beneath like ant mandibles.
unfortunately I didn’t get a good still photo of the red-rumped Polyrhachis armata that he mimicked. however, a neighboring shrub housed another T. maxillosus who sported a shiny coat of gold hair in the style of Polyrhachis illaudata, a worker of which was also sitting there. side-by side, the mimicry is simply exquisite.
*at least, I think the black and red form is also considered T. maxillosus. the gold-haired form seems to be the most commonly observed type.
fun Singapore moment: I was walking along the trail at Bukit Timah, eyes to the ground looking for flatworms in the drainage channel, completely oblivious to the fact I was about to walk directly into a 3-meter long keeled rat snake. I’d thought it was a branch until I realized it was staring at me.
it was very polite though, and after I apologized for not noticing it returned to calmly foraging for a meal in the leaf litter. I followed it for a few minutes until it decided the other side of the path might have better food.
an impressive animal, probably the largest wild snake I’ve ever seen. I hope it found a skink or perhaps a juicy frog
hello! I am back from my vacation to Southeast Asia and have seen so many strange and lovely bugs. it’ll be a little while before I download and organize my photos, so have these funky little fellows for now
