A Time To Stay Put

A dog refusing to budge despite much persuasion on a fine day in the botanic gardens. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This was captured from across the lake at the equivalent focal length of about 300mm. It wasn’t cropped in further as I had wanted to include the subjects’ environment.

A Day of Birding
(Click the images for larger views)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn't help but notice the Moon as she made her way across the afternoon sky, occasionally semi-obscured by some high whispy clouds. As I continued to wander into the golden hour however, I spent more time looking for birds catching some nice golden side light; the more dynamic the pose in which I found them, the better. The Northern Pintail shown above was catching full golden hour light, and looked to be opening it's wings to embrace the sunset.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Occasionally I came across a bird I could readily identify, such as the Great Blue Heron above on the left, however there were some that gave me difficulty in their identification. The semi-sleeping duck-like bird on the right is one such example. Basically, I can tell you it's a Scaup (a type of duck), but there are Greater and Lesser Scaups and the difference can only really be found in the head, with the Greater Scaup having a bit of a pompadour shape to its coconut, while the Lesser Scaup has a more classic duck shape to its head but with a small peak at the back.
Because this one wouldn't raise its head to give us a proper look, I don't feel I can properly identify this as one or the other.
Tumblr media
I managed to capture this California Brown Pelican as it was in mid-takeoff.
With a wingspan of about 6 and a half feet, they are impressive to see flying about, and maneuvering in and out of the water.
Tumblr media
"This is mahhhh buuuuutt."
It seemed to say.
I shot all of this (except for the Great Blue Heron above - that was on my Nikon D810 for comparisons sake) on a relatively new set up to what I typically use when out birding. Traditionally I have used the Nikon D810 with the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens as the Nikons 36 megapixels and autofocusing system make for very sharp, detailed and cropable photos, and 600 mm is a decent level of reach when it comes to wildlife. But this time I was looking for a little more reach, so I used my FujiFilm X-S10 with the Sigma lens on an adaptor giving me about 900mm of long end focal range (because of the FujiFilms APSC sized sensor). Additionally if I felt I needed a little more reach I attached my Sigma 1.4X teleconverter to the set up giving me a total reach of a little over 1200mm.
Naturally when extending out that far there is some loss in overall image quality, but the X-Trans sensor on the FujiFilm is an a outstanding chip and handled the challenge fairly admirably. The only real issue I had was some low light/high ISO noise in some of the shots as the sun dipped lower and lower in the sky. In the end however, I would rather have the shot with some digital noise, than no shot at all.
All-in-all it was a plesant afternoon out and about among the birds for a golden hour wander thru the local wetalnds.
Let's go exploring.

Digitalrev canon 7d review iso#
Well, the firmware updates wouldn't be able to affect the charger, so if you, like me, are primarily concerned with not needing to carry two incompatible chargers around it should meet your needs. There are other differences of course but those are the main ones for video. DigitalRev 'Chipped' LP-E6 battery only 45 in Canon Accessories.
Digitalrev canon 7d review 1080p#
Remember that the 60D is identical for image quality to the 550D, 7D and 600D but it is only on the 600D that you get a video ‘Ex-Telephoto’ 1:1 crop zoom, and only on the 7D do you get a 1080p HDMI output with no blank-out gap when you hit record. Camera gear is much cheaper in Asia! You can see the results below. A Sigma APO 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM and Sigma 1.4x Teleconverter are used. Nearly everything you could wish for is on it the camera is outstandingly built and has a state-of-the-art auto focus system. Kai takes both out for a spot of bird photography to test the two cameras out. The Canon 7D Mark 2 is a jack of all trades. I shot on the Canon 60D earlier this year, the one Philip Bloom very kindly brought me back from Japan. Watch DigitalRev’s Kai compare the Canon EOS 7D Mark II to the EOS 5D Mark III.
Digitalrev canon 7d review iso#
There’s also a direct high ISO comparison in there as well, and you can see that the Canon generally beats the GH2 for stills quality (but not for video). Canon EOS 7D Mark II DSLR Camera Body W-E1 Wi-Fi Adapter Battery Battery Charger Eyecup Eg RF-3 Body Cap IFC-150U II USB 3. Kai and Lok take it out for a field test to see how the new Dual Pixel CMOS technology performs for photography and video. Kai Man Wong’s video-review of the GH2 and 60D DigitalRev TV 'Exclusive DRTV takes a look at the final production model of the new Canon EOS 70D. If you are interested in how the GH2 and 60D (ditto 600D) stack up for stills as well as video check out these articles I wrote for DigitalRev. It’s a 2 part comparison but part 1 has an emphasis on the GH2 and part 2 deals mainly with the 60D.

A Copper-throated Moment

A Copper-throated Sunbird foraging in a north-western wetland reserve. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
I had followed this sunbird and its partner a while and grabbed this shot when it had paused momentarily. This was taken some years back with a 1/3 stop overexposure to compensate for the bright backdrop and then cropped to compose in post.

This morning, Sigma is officially announcing their first ultra-telephoto lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras: the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS in the “Contemporary” line. Specifically, this lens will be available in Sony E-mount and Sigma/Leica/Panasonic L-mount…. but not Canon R or Nikon Z. There may be some modest similarities with the existing model for DSLRs, but Sigma substantially re-designed the lens specifically for mirrorless cameras (rather than just fitting a new mount), making it smaller and potentially superior. The DSLR version was already excellent (see my review, here), and I expect even more from this new design.
Tumblr media
Probably the most obvious difference in the new lens is the presence of a tripod foot (optional), despite the lens’s compact size. When the tripod ring is not being used, Sigma offers a protective ring to fill in the space on the lens.
Optically, the lens has 22 elements in 16 groups, including 5 special glass elements (the DSLR version has 21 in 15 groups). Even so, the new lens is lighter by about 35 grams, and Sigma promises excellent resolution from corner to corner. The lens uses a stepping motor rather than an HSM (hyper-sonic motor), which are well known for their smooth, accurate focusing when shooting video. Maximum magnification is about 1:4, at 400mm.
Sigma does not mention any sort of weather sealing, though I didn’t expect any in a “C” series lens. Optical Image Stabilization provides about 4 stops of shake reduction, which is always appreciated, but especially in long telephoto lenses.
I’ve been occasionally using my Sigma 150-600mm on my Sony A7RIII with the Sigma Canon t0 Sony adapter and mixed results. I’m excited to give this more compact, native lens a try.
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Teleconverters and Dock
The 100-400mm lens is compatible with two new teleconverters for L-mount and E-mount Sigma lenses: the TC-1411 is a 1.4x teleconverter, and the TC-2011 is a 2x converter.
Tumblr media
If you want to update the firmware in your L-mount mount lenses, Sigma is now offering the USB Dock UD-11 for the job.
And finally, Sigma’s popular trio of f/1.4 APS-C lenses (16mm f/1.4 C, 30mm f/1.4 C, and 56mm f/1.4 C) will all soon be available in L-mount. I assume that these offerings are aimed at video shooters; L-mount APS-C cameras are very rare. However, Sigma’s fp (a very compact full-frame camera) might shoot in APS-C mode and benefit from the large aperture and compact size of these lenses.
Tumblr media
Prices and Availability
The Sigma 100-400 f/5-6.3 is expected to ship on July 11th at a cost of $949. The 1.4x and 2x teleconverters will cost $399 and $429, respectively. The UD-11 Dock will cost $59, and all three of them are expected on July 10th.
Also available on July 10th will be the three APS-C lenses. Prices will be similar to existing lenses: the 16mm is $449, the 30mm $339, and the 56mm $479.
Announced: Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 + Teleconverters This morning, Sigma is officially announcing their first ultra-telephoto lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras: the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS…
