While a good deal of my beer drinking & reviewing is solitary in nature (although as Homer Simpson once queried, “Does the Lord count as a person?”), I do enjoy a more social drinking experience from time to time, and I get together with a group of fellow beer geeks once a month or so to share and taste some goodies. For last night’s tasting, I brought along a couple of recent acquisitions, including this hefty 1 litre bottle of Side Launch Majestic Saison, the latest in the Ships of Collingwood Series of limited edition beers. Right from the get go, it comes across as a kissin’ cousin to Side Launch’s flagship Wheat Ale, as it has a similar hazy golden appearance with a healthy white cap of foam. The aroma and flavour also start in the same place, with notes of banana and clove, before they’re joined by white pepper, lemon cream, and a hint of pear. Hi hello oh man I am so sorry it has taken so long to get you your questions, and on your first Question Friday what a terrible reputation I shall garner for myself oh dear! Please accept my humblest apologies, and with them these questions:

1) As someone who often boggles at your ability to think complex thoughts and then articulate them to other people, I wonder, where did you acquire your critical thinking skills? Is it a natural ability? Or one that was developed through study or work? Can I acquire it also?!

2) I have heard from a reliable source 👀 that you have excellent taste in beer...so what are your favourites?

3) What is a common opinion that you disagree with?

Thank you so much for taking part in Question Friday! I frequently find myself wishing I could crawl inside your brain and have a peak around, and in the absence of the ability (or the consent) to do that, this is the next best thing 😊

My answers:

1. Ahhhhh hahaha... Well, thank you for that compliment! Pretty much just an obsessive nerd. Mostly, though, I'm the daughter of a sociologist so I think I just got his weird brain and applied it to fiction instead of stats and trends. And, I dunno... I'm a Libra? (Though. So is he.)

2. HA! There's literally only one person you could have heard that from! I mostly stay close to home -- Ontario craft brews like Collective Arts, Outfield and Sidelaunch. Last few years I've also tended to drink sours, and then my brother is very into IPAs and will also just buy a bunch of random stuff that we will end up splitting. My family does have a running joke regarding Duchesse de Bourgogne, which I do like, but mostly order in bars so that I can send my cousin pictures, since she once soaked herself in it during a cottage weekend.

3. Well. Right at this moment, I cannot escape opinions on John Mulaney, and I hate them all! But in particular, I find myself alone in feeling that people are wildly overstating his stated opinion on parenthood because as I remember his comedy, it was pretty ambivalent but not an emphatic "absolutely not!" (But also, sometimes people change their minds. That's an opinion I HAVE heard. It's one of the many opinions I hate, because I don't want to hear about it anymore and I'm pretty amazed at how impossible it is for every one of my algorithms to protect me from the John Mulaney discourse. And now I've contributed to it. Gah.)

🍺🍺½❌❌ℹ️ • Side Launch Brewing Company Session Seven ABV:4.6% IBU:❓ • ℹ️ I am not a hoppy beer lover, so I will put this disclaimer on anything over or I think is over 50 IBU’s. That being said... “hoppy beer lovers” please don’t take offence to the rating I give. I’m trying to learn to acquire the taste for this style or at least find some I can enjoy 😬 • Begins with pale grainy cracker malts. The next notable flavours are melon and papaya in the mid-sip. A robust burst of grapefruit and pine hops take over next and leave a quite bitter taste. The bitterness lingers into the aftertaste and combines with a herbal tea-like flavour to conclude the sip. @sidelaunch #sidelaunch • This one just isn’t my style, as the hops aspects were too strong for me. I found myself enjoying it slightly more as it warmed to room temperature, but it wasn’t enough for me to pick this one up again.
