Shifting focus. The beginning of a new year is always a wonderful opportunity to shift focus. Even though I do not believe in new year's resolutions, because change needs to be done when necessary (which is rarely just once a year), I do always have a special feeling about the beginning of January. The year feels like the untouched pages of history yet to be written and something about that excited me. Quickly we will move towards brighter days and soon enough nights will start to fade and make way for brighter, longer days again. I have lately been very inactive on social media, because I felt the strong need to focus on other things in life, but with the light, energy is returning and so is my creativity and desire to share the beauty around me. I have yet to go out and photograph in the deep snow that the recent snowstorm has brought us and for that I need to find a way to move in the hip-deep snow, but these are problems for another day. Mornings have become dark now and I am rarely at home to see them. When I go up for work it's still dark and as it happens the weekends lately have been cloudy and gloomy but without this beautiful fog. Since the temperatures have dropped this week, ice has started to cover the lake quicker than I thought and even the river is carrying big pieces of ice, that will soon get stuck in eachother and cover the river in ice as well. Each winter I am amazed at the thought that it will take at least 5, if not 6 months until I see free water again on the lake, since it usually takes until at least April for waterbodies to get freed from the ice covering them. The beauty this fall is extraordinary and the last few days especially. When I took these photos the water was still lower, but now after some rain the levels in the lake and river have risen and have flooded the ground around the tree I was standing under. Today a thin layer of ice covered the majority of the lake. Days are turning colder and even though we still have plus degrees during the days, the last few days frost stayed on the ground in shady and North facing spaces in our garden. We had a wonderful weekend, helping a friend move and spending today in the garden, raking leaves and changing tyres on our cars. I love this cozy time of the year, and even though it saddens me to have less daylight to spend in the garden, I can't help but look forward to the dark and cozy winter months. Last year, during a few weeks from mid December to the beginning of January, the sun didn't reach our house, as the hills around the valley were casting such big shadows in the sun's shallow course. I wonder what this second winter in the valley will be and am already looking forward to next year's gardening season. Weeks are passing by so quickly now and the colorful trees have mostly turned empty. It feels weird seeing them bare again, which they will be for more than half a year from now! Today the sunlight was shining so beautifully through the empty branches and I took in every last sunray and hope that they won't be too rare this winter. In the mornings it gets darker and darker and soon it will be dark when we get up for work and already by the time we get home. Living in the north is beautiful in so many ways, but brings with it all kinds of challenges as well and I love being so familiar with it by now that I can prepare for winter's hardships both mentally and physically. Quicker than I expected has autumn taken over. The picture below this one in my feed (so 3 posts ago) was taken in the exact same spot but a few months prior. Misty bright nights have turned dark and clear and instead the mornings are foggy now carrying the mystical feeling of this season of change. Last veggies can be harvested from the garden like carrots and cabbage and I make sure to take seeds from everything that I liked to try and grow more of it next year. Today Tord and I took a pause from all the work around the house and garden and went on a little adventure in the forest instead. We hiked a bit and picked some mushrooms and concluded the day with dinner at a restaurant that we used to visit sometimes when Tord still lived in his apartment in town. As I am writing this we are on our way back home to spend a cozy evening with the cats. More and more plants in our garden are turning into different shades of yellow, orange red and brown and it looks so beautiful! The berries have been ripe for quite some time now and we are able to make some last harvests after this very short growing season. I spent the weekend redoing my office and I am so happy with how it turned out. It's still a mess of tools and screws and paint brushes but I can't wait for everything to be clean and done. Tonight Tord and I are watching the new episodes of The Handmaid's Tale, which we had been looking forward to for a loooong time. It's wonderful how cozy everything has become now that darkness has returned and is chopping away at the days more and more. Heavy clouds were covering the sky today and it rained almost all day long. As I am writing this I can hear heavy rainfall on our roof and I feel so lucky to be sitting on our cozy couch. For the first time in weeks it has been raining cats and dogs today. The day started with thunder rolling through the valley, it was a huge thunderstorm that put a stop to the warm and humid weather of the past few days and I got up to listen to it together with Yeti even though it was really early. Thank god it's Saturday and I could go back to bed and sleep in 😁 In the short periods when the rain stopped Tord and I worked hard and finished another one of our building projects.
