jay ferin's fire motif will always get to me. she is a fire who burns strong and bright, she's the guiding light for her friends, both figuratively and literally (as the navigator of the riptide pirates). but she's also a fire that burns herself, a fire built out of something almost hollow as she's desperately trying to find the answer; is she ever gonna be ready to return to her old life? and every day, she seems to know less and less.

the friends she's made as a member of the riptide pirates are like new kindling. they're stoking the flame and they're the thing that's making it thrive and flourish and become stronger in the long run, but how does she feel? how did she feel? knowing that every single branch, every twig, every piece to be burnt, that it was all a lie, at least in the beginning? with her secrets just fucking breathing down her neck?

did grizzly know what he was doing, setting up that hallucination of chip brutally murdering her sister? setting it up so that the next episode, jay would be revealing that secret?

--because it fits perfectly, in the worst way possible. she joined chip because she was a fire burning on vengeance, wanting to find the bastards who killed her sister, but chip became her closest friend.

when she was willing to give up her life, give up her freedom, if it meant chip and gill would live? when she looked her greatest fear, her fucking father, in the eyes, she was shaking and trembling, weeping. she wasn't the jay we knew.

but she still looked her father in the eyes and gave in, because she had finally found out- the only thing she feared more than him was chip and gillion dying.

but when she shot gillion, and he went down with a fucking smile? when he begged her to just tell him what he needed to fight for because he would do it?

when it all became futile, just for a moment?

she had given up. jay ferin had given up.

she's a newly extinguished flame, she's smoldering ash. but a spark's been lit, a spark blazed to life on that boat, when she shouted with only her crew and the stars to hear, that she was jay ferin, and that she was going to be the best fucking pirate the world ever saw.

jay ferin is going to become an all-encompassing blaze that may consume everything in her path, may even consume herself in the end.

and i'm so fucking excited to watch.

hiiii I have jrwi brainrot - spoilers for episodes 109-110 of riptide, might not make much sense without context skskdjf - there’s also light swearing yippeee

It takes him too long to notice the tugging at the back of his coat. If he could feel anything, or if he still had his heart, he would shudder, he thinks. Or his heart would skip a beat, or- or something, something that isn’t just silence and cold and-

He turns back to Jay, forcing a smile. Nothing is wrong, he hopes his eyes say, though hers are glossy with tears and her lip is trembling, we’re all here, it’s okay.

“Chip?” she whispers, vulnerable and soft as the tears that murmur across her face. She’s still holding onto his coat, a vice grip. She’s limping. He slows her step to match hers.

“Hey, Jay-Jay,” he greets. Usually he’d ruffle her hair, but he’s too cold for that today, “what’s wrong?”

She bites her lip and sniffles, reaching to hold his hand but ends up hooked on his pocket when he pulls away. She’s still limping. He could carry her. He’s too cold.

“I’m sorry,” she apologizes, and tears spill down her cheeks, “I-I said all that stuff about- about having to keep the crew safe and-and putting the crew first but then I-”

She scrubs tears off her face and whines. He wants to hold her. He keeps his hands to himself.

“I had the chance to-to save everyone,” she sobs, “and now you’re- you’re-!”

“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” he reaches up, hands brushing hers, and she flinches at the cold. He pulls away, “it’s okay, Jay-Jay. We’re gonna figure it out.”

She sniffles pitifully. She’s still limping.

“Why don’t you go ask Gill to carry you, kiddo?”

Another sniffle, then a nod, and she furrows her brows and limps a little faster to catch up to Gillion, who greets her warm and bright as ever and easily scoops her into his arms.

Chip smiles at the display- Gill offers her blackened leaves and many a playful tone, and she laughs, (albeit watery and a little sad), and threads the leaves into his hair by the coral with Pretzel’s help.

Chip’s smile wavers. He pushes his hands into his pockets and watches his footsteps in the dirt.

It’s nobody’s fault. They couldn’t have known she had power like that. He should have been more careful, shouldn’t have agreed to healing their enemy. Should have had Gill come with them from the start, should’ve looked for Star now, after the battle was over, should have-

“Okay, little bird,” says Gillion in a loud whisper right over Chip’s shoulder, “do you think if I pick him up now he will notice?”

Chip whirls around, looking down at a beaming Gillion, his blue-green tail flicking playfully and Jay smiling in his arms.

Chip points a stern finger at him, walking backwards with practiced ease, “don’t you dare, Tidestrider.”

Gillion puts on his most shit eating grin and gently lowers Jay to her feet. Chip’s got a head start now, if only by a few backwards steps.

“I’ll be back for you, little bird,” Gillion says, his eyes never leaving Chip’s for even a second, “I’ve got a big problem to take care of.”

Chip could banter. He should banter, keep spirits up. But being called a problem is not one of his favorite things. He turns tail and runs.

“Catch me if you can!”

“Oh, you will find it is my destiny to catch you!”

Chip is fast. He isn’t sure if Gillion is faster, especially after the battle they’ve just been through. It’s easier than it should be, he rushes past Green, (he yelps as Chip sprints past him, then again when Gillion shouts in triumph for seemingly no reason, as per usual), up the hill without even breaking a sweat and he-

He isn’t breathing.

There’s a sudden, childish thought- he’s cheating. He could run forever, he’s cheating, he’s cheating-

His steps slow. Gillion shouts, triumphant, excited, and tackles him to the ground.

“Ha! I’ve bested you! Now you-” Gill falters, “ah, oh- Chip? Are you alright?”

He should be crying. He got all scraped up in the fall, and it hurts and he wants to be held and he should be crying but he isn’t he isn’t he isn’t-

“Hey it’s- it’s alright, I’ve got you,” Gillion tells him. His hand is glowing, though Chip feels nothing as he uses Lay on Hands.

Chip can’t cry. He can’t even sniffle. He just stares as Gillion heals a scrape that wasn’t bleeding, and lets himself be cradled- one hand under his knees and the other at his back- and lifted off the ground.

“There we are,” Gill smiles down at him, “I’ve got you. You’re safe, little chipper.”

He hooks his hand on the front of Gill’s shirt and hides his face in his shoulder all the way back to Jay.

“Thank you for waiting, little bird,” Gillion says.

Jay nods, then the adjusting starts so Gillion can carry them both- he sets Chip down and picks Jay up, putting her on his hip, but before he can pick Chip up again Jay stops him with her hands on Chip’s face, pulling him close.

She kisses his forehead, gentle as can be, and Gill follows suit before picking him up again with a bright smile. Chip hides his face in his hair, noticing a pink tentacle at the side of his face- he focuses enough to realize she’s patting his cheek.

“Are you three all right back there?” Green calls from up ahead.

“We’ll be alright,” Gillion answers for all three of them, “we’ve got each other.”

Okay so you can check the #jrwi poketide <- that tag if you wanna see shit. It's not fully developed but like here are some of my fav bits.

I have pokeball lore!!! It's actually pretty different to canon pokemon, so I just wanna shout it out. Jay Ferin has traditional pokeballs that grow and shrink and have the symbol of her family because they're custom made for the Ferins. Chip has older pokeballs he recieved as hand downs that do NOT work that good and don't adjust in size <- this is like a cheaper and more common pokeball, they're made from acorns. Gillion has undersea pokeballs that can hold multiple pokemon and are based on like shells? Which helps explain his much larger team of pokemon. And you should totally check out this underrated lil' video of mine that shows off how they look when used. ALSO FUCK STANDARD POKEMON TEAMZ. I don't wanna be rude but this is a bracket so I just wanna say, these bitches teams reflect something about them down to just how many pokemon they use. Jay has less pokemon because she's more rigid and deathly unsure about what she's meant to do with herself. Chip has a ragtag found family team, a lot of them very silly additions. Gillion has WAY too many pokemon, and he doesn't rlly follow the unspoken "6 pokemon battle" rule because he is a bad bitch!! Let Gillion have like 4 corsola btw, I think he's allowed to be high key obsessed with them and looking after them. (BTW pokemon fight alongside their trainers they arent separate battlez, just want you to know)

Pokemon highlights:

Jay and Eevee "Eevee was a pokemon she inhereted from her family. She was given a firestone to eventually evolve them into a Flareon but she hasn't done it on her journey yet. Jay thought that she was just procrastinating at first but as time goes on she's starting to realise she hasn't followed through because that's not what she wants for her Eevee or for her." And I have considered drawing a custom evolution for Eevee because that'd be so cool.

Chip and Bonsley "Chip stole this house plant. I mean house plant I mean house plant I mean house plant I mean-" He accidentally took a pokemon he mistook for a houseplant.

Chip and Sableye "Chip is so distressed that Gillion is throwing all their money away just wait until he realises his pokemon is eating it too. He genuinely has no fucking clue what this thing is."

Gillion and many magikarp "Gillion has a collection of Magikarp (all on the smaller side) he looks after so that one day they will evolve into big strong Gyarados. :) Jay and Chip did not understand why Gillion was collecting these Pokemon until one of them evolved on the journey with them and they're just, "WAIT THAT'S WHAT THEY EVOLVE INTO??" Gillion thought they knew."

...and Chip spinoff of above story "Funny side story, you remember Gillion and all those Magikarp? Well Gillion suggested that Chip help look after them and Chip found a Magikarp he fucking ADORED. He was feeding them! He was chatting with them! They were BESTIES!!! And then the Magikarp evolved but it didn't want to go back into the sea, they wanted to stay with Chip. Chip has a Gyarados because Gillion convinced him to look after a Magikarp and Chip decided they were the best Magikarp ever. I hope that makes you happy."

Gillion and Seadra "gillion has basically had kingdra since he was really really small, and it was regarded as one of the few times as a child where he really managed to step up and sort of embody what he's meant to be? but the kingdra actually was just a pokemon who looked at the tiny not very well treated child and adopted him. kingdra is older than gillion and i didnt quite realise HOW big kingdra was, but searching it up for drawing... kingdra is 5'11″ (180cm), which makes it even TALLER than gillion at his tallest. and that's a height i dont use so gillion is like 5'1" (154cm). kingdra rlly does just look like gillion's poke parent, its so silly." Seadra adopted gillion you guys.

Gillion and honedge "gillion STILL has a honedge when he joins the story, and they evolve into doublade episode 15 which coincicides with gillion's growth as he develops a better understanding of the world (also there was a sword fight like yeah its fitting). HOWEVER, to evolve into an aegislash you need a dusk stone. ... i propose that doublade evolves episode *73* in tandem with when gillion makes the oath of vengence... i feel like its such a noteworthy moment for gillion AND the magical effects charlie describes are as follows "..and you see as the sparkles around him- this funny, zanny, quirky pixie dust starts to turn into almost a charcoalish colour-" <- that seems like adequate dusk stone vibes to me."

also gillion has an Omanyte and Kabuto that he was given as a child that hate him because they think he's a disappointment i love when pokemon trauma <3

so that's a lot anyways MY pokemon au is the MOST fucking based PLEASE believe me

Shout out to Grizzly in episode 38 of the absurdly powerful dnd podcast jrwi riptide where he litterally hands albatrio a cat toy and they spend at least 10 minutes trying to crack it open. Gillion hit it with a nat 20 chip bit it and then Jay actually just fully shot it before they realized it was just a cat bell

#ill try to find a clip but it might take me a bit but holy shit this is the single funniest thing he could have done #if not the fully 10 minutes just like the realization #grizzly in general was just unhinged this episode #he pulled a gun out irl in like the first 30 seconds #had the npcs of the crowd litterally jump the main villain on a stage #declared the navy was about to go and attack the island as the final thing before their guest left #and then he did this 😭😭 #jrwi #i make yet anothet post just for me 👍
