Lovecraft π―οΈπ―οΈπ―οΈπ―οΈπ―οΈπ―οΈπ―οΈ As I dip my tentacles back into hosting readalongs, and as voted for by you - *gestures vaguely into the void* - I'd like to keep this one simple. Join me, for the final week of August, in the Generally Gothic #Lovecraftalong. βοΈ You are invited to read any - I repeat a-n-y - short stories and/or poems by H. P. Lovecraft and join in the discussion here. If you've no idea where to begin, fear not; the spookstagram community came forth and I have gathered a list of recommendations, as suggested by you - *gestures, again, vaguely and voidwards*. I also have a list of places to read free. βοΈ I will post another few Lovecraft-specific posts to host discussion threads, but you're welcome to take them to your own pages by using the hashtag #Lovecraftalong and #generallygothicbookclub (the latter's much longer so I understand if the thumbs refuse). Tag me & I'll share your posts for other Lovecraftalongers (?!) to see. βοΈ I mentioned that I was jumping back into monthly themes; for August that means monsters - formally, it is titled 'Of Monsters and Men'. I am, thus, particularly interested in the monstrous within Lovecraftian literature this month, but you need not be limited by my nerdy obsessions. βοΈ I know that Lovecraft can be problematic. It is important to read him within the context of his time. It is also important to acknowledge the monstrosity of humanity in very real life. βοΈ Thank you to those of you who have already expressed an interest in reading along. The invite remains open to everyone, until the end of August and into the great beyond... βοΈ Lovecraftalong lists incoming shortly. . #generallygothic #bookstragram #spookstagram #readalong #hplovecraft #shortstoryreadalong #lovecraftreadalong #cosmichorror #horrorreaders #spookynerd (at OUTER SPACE) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChsCl2lo89n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Gay's short story begins in the final moments of the "then" - the time before the disappearance of a young girl named Zeineb. This disappearance is the main event of the short story. The setting is anchored in the gothic through architecture, nature, and atmosphere. The house, of course, is pivotal. It necessitates the paperhanger. The titular paperhanger is an intriguing figure, whose long hair Zeineb likes to run her fingers through, and who knows how to get to the abandoned graveyard. I won't get spoilery in this caption - I really do urge you to read the short story for yourself (free pdf linked in bio) - but I will post about it on the blog soon (today ran out β³). Coming soon: β’Into the Abstract: 'The Paperhanger'β’ I'd love to discuss it with you below though. π€: What did you think of 'The Paperhanger'? π€: Where did you find the gothic and the Southern Gothic within its words? π€: Anyone else getting Unsolved Mysteries vibes? π· πA huge thank you to @shed.milkteeth for recommending this short last winter - it took me a while, but I didn't forget. Truly excellent recommendation ππ€. . #thepaperhanger #williamgay #southerngothic #americangothic #southernliterature #americanhorror #shortstory #shortstoryreadalong #readalong #bookstagram #books #bookish #graveyard #cemetery #spookynerd #bookworm #horror #spookystories #generallygothic #bookclub #gothic #gothicfiction #unsolvedmysteries #crimefiction #missingpersons #netflix #truecrime https://www.instagram.com/p/CDUknsmAm-X/?igshid=192clao9jx8ci
