discussing zoro's family actually reminded me of how much I liked the flashback to his interactions with kozaburo as a kid. it's unlikely this was planned since the beginning, especially considering the 1000+ chapters in between zoro's introduction vs the flashback, but it's still kinda sweet that zoro initially told luffy that his swords (aside from his own life) were his dearest treasures. wado's importance is obvious and it's revealed early on, but then we get to wano and turns out kozaburo had given zoro a pair of swords too. and he was so happy!
Tumblr media
we don't get much insight as to what kozaburo thought of giving zoro the swords beyond his insistence that they were crap anyway, more so compared to enma, which he had forged in his youth and considered his greatest creation. to him, perhaps it was nothing to gift them to zoro. but to the orphan kid who couldn't have afforded them on his own back then and was so earnest about his swordsmanship and training? probably meant so much at the time.
although the designs look similar there's no way to know for sure rn (as far as I'm aware) if the swords kozaburo gave him were intended to be the same he used to fight kuina with, then carried later as a bounty hunter right until they got destroyed during his duel against mihawk at baratie, but nothing so far contradicts it either I think. knowing how much zoro values his swords (calling them his treasures, holding a burial for yubashiri, fighting to get shusui back), it makes sense that he'd hold onto them for as long as he could. it may have been a thoughtless act of kindness on kozaburo's part in the grand scheme of things, but it all came full circle to zoro wielding enma so many years later alongside wado ichimonji, which he had forged too. it's so interesting to me.

One Piece SBS Vol 105 Thoughts
The spoilers have been flowing out for SBS 105, and with it a bunch more info to digest. So let's talk about some key points.
Spoilers for the SBS (which also has Wano spoilers)
Starting with the big one:
Zoro's bloodline
I see a lot of people upset or mad that Zoro's family tree was put in an SBS, but honestly I don't think it matters. The Wano chapters were already pretty blatant about the fact that Zoro is a descendant of Ryuma and there's more to his likeness to Ushimaru than the prior SBS confirming that he's not his dad. All you really get from the SBS is the bits in the middle; Ushimaru is his great uncle, his sister Furiko married a swordsman around Shimotsuki village, Roronoa Pinzoro, who bore Zoro's father, Roronoa Arashi. Arashi died fighting pirates, but interestingly married a 'Tera', a Bandit's daughter, who died of illness.
Honestly though, I think there's still more to it. The fact that Zoro didn't initially grow up in Shimotsuki village must mean that his mother resided somewhere else, was Zoro a bandit kid? Is his maternal grandfather still alive? What pirates did Arashi die fighting against? There still feels like there's some stuff less obvious Oda could potentially unpack.
Side Note: Tashigi Reminder to people that this does not confirm that Tashigi is a Shimotsuki either, despite some people's efforts to spin it that way. Yes 25 people left Wano and only 10 founded Shimotsuki village (which was already a village but renamed) but that does not mean they were all Shimotsuki, Miyatomo the craftsman was also a part of that group after all, plus there will be people in service of the clan (like Orochi was to Yasuie, even though he wasn't a Shimotsuki). In addition, it's worth noting that the village was established by defeating bandits, some simply may not have made it out alive. Overall her former likeness to Kuina may be something, but it also may not, nothing about her is confirmed yet.
Chopper vs SMILEs
So while many were disappointed to hear that there was nothing Chopper could do to fix the people suffering from the defective SMILEs, it always made sense to me. For one, the after-effect is not a disease or virus, so it doesn't quite undo his goal (people just expect Chopper's goal to be completed in Wano when it's convenient?). Secondly, SMILEs are fake Devil Fruits, so people are really expecting Chopper to undo a Devil Fruit effect? That's a bit much.
I feel like people expected too much from this because of how easily Chopper could counter Queen's Plague Rounds, but even this was beyond his capability.
Kurozumi Tama
I mean, this was obvious right? She has purple hair, how many other characters in Wano have the same hair colour as Orochi? The key thing though was Oda clarifying the also-obvious matter of Hiyori's parting words to Orochi being specifically for Orochi himself. Tama is a Kurozumi, but she isn't going to be subjected to the same harassment, especially since she partook in defeating Orochi and Kaido too, plus she has an army of SMILE users at her disposal and also the only ones who really know she's a Kurozumi would be Hitetsu/Sukiyaki (who was fine about raising her) and herself, and she would have the wherewithal to keep it to herself anyway.
Others
On the less unpackable side of things there was art of Yamato as an Oiran to satiate the thirst traps, of course in this case Yamato probably wouldn't be identifying as Oden if he was an Oiran.
Green Bull and Black Horse (the criminal investigation guy) had their design inspirations revealed, they are indeed very accurate.
And Oda very expertly danced around Sanji's eyebrows changing due to the Raid Suit effects, so there will probably be more to Sanji's biology to look into later.
Post-Reverse Mountain crew know some of what happened during the sagas before they joined, by asking those who were there if they were willing to tell, which makes sense, not too necessary but it also explains why Franky and Robin didn't know about Laboon in Thriller Bark.
Also alongside Sora, Warrior of the Sea, Oda revealed that the other popular picture books are; 'Fire Dog' (A dog on fire), 'Pokeemon' (maybe Pokémon hinted but image is more Doraemon), Monkey Ball (Dragon Ball, has a monkey with an axe flying the nimbus), and 'Marco-San' (which is just a girl, I was half expecting just Marco or a Pineapple, dunno the reference).

7. Z: Hey old man, why did you only fix his weapon’s handle?
S: Did that look like a weapon?
8. S: Who gave it to you, boy?
K: Father and mother.
S: I see. Take care of it!
K: Yeah!
9. Z: ...I couldn’t see.
S: Then that’s okay. That's the way the cookie crumbles.
Z: Whoa, what are you doing all of a sudden, old man?!

Had a drifting thought about the Ringo region and some of its well known residents. Shimotsuki Furiko, Ushimaru’s sister, was presumably born there, Kozaburo likely was too, and Izo and Kiku were. Three of those four left the country and found their place in the outside world.
Makes me wonder if Izo and Kiku had grandparents or great aunts/uncles from Ringo who sailed with Kozaburo’s expedition team of 20 some people. The party left 55 years ago, Izo was born 45 years ago, Kiku 42 years ago. Kiku was sent 20 years into the future so is currently 22 years of age. That would reasonably place the siblings’ parents as having being born roughly 63-70 years ago, meaning they would have been around 8-15 when Kozaburo left the country.
Then the siblings’ grandparents, or any potential siblings they had, may have been born around 81-88 years ago, making them 25-33 when Kozaburo left.
We know that the Wado Ichimonji was forged by Kozaburo and that he brought it with him to the East Blue. With that in mind, it’s possible that members of the expedition team crafted or brought other well known swords with them too. Shigure, Kashu, Sandai Kitetsu, and Yubashiri all come to mind as possibilities.

a chef and a swordsman
(yesterday i was complaining about not knowing what to draw and bacoose hit me with "haha zosan roleswap" and now i've been rotating this at high velocity for about 24 hours)
shimotsuki kozaburo fled wano and settled on what would become shimotsuki island, changing his craft from sword-smithing to knife-smithing
wado ichimonji is both the last "sword" and first "knife" he smithed, and would of course find its way into zoro's hands as a tool that finds use both as a kitchen knife and a weapon
sanji flees germa as a child and vows to never use his body as a weapon because that's what judge had wanted it to be, and after surviving being stranded for months with zeff, he takes up sword-fighting
i was thinking about a rapier but i think sanji would use a cutting weapon rather than a thrusting weapon so szabla it is + parrying knife
(szable were as decorative and elaborate as katanas and other japanese swords and were also used as a status symbol by nobility so it Works for the fantasy japan -> fantasy europe swap)
sanji's the one that luffy finds in the yard; they all find zoro when they end up on shimotsuki island, and that's where sanji fights mihawk and gets The Scar
zoro doesn't want to leave shimotsuki because he considers it his duty to keep helping run the island's restaurants even though he and kuina had sworn to find the all blue together, but watching sanji chase his dream rattles that loose and he leaves with the straw hats
have not quite managed to Rotate thriller bark yet. i think it would somehow end up happening in the same way.

⚔️ SWORD FACT SATURDAY ⚔️
Did you know that one of the Wano residents we met in One Piece was Kuina's grandfather? Here's a fact about him!
『 Both the Wado Ichimonji and Enma were crafted by Shimotsuki Kozaburo, a member of the Shimotsuki Family and a legendary master swordsmith from the land of Wano. 』

I don't get why people are mad about Zoros family being revield in sbs. Tell me how it would be told in story. Like yeah old man Hyo could say that Zoro reminds him of (or resembles) Ushimaru. Zoro dosen't know who that is. Someone could ask where he got wado ichimonji. Well it was his friends she died and he asked her dad for it. Thats it. Sure now he knows that the old guy he met as a kid was from wano and made the swords. But Zoro just grew up in a village named after Shimotsuki, was friends with Kozaburos granddaughter and trained in her dads dojo. Kozaburo didn't seem to reconize Zoro as Furiko's grandson so i doubt he knew anything.
Like Oda says Zoro doesn't know any of this. No one else kows Zoro is descented from Shimotsuki, so how can it be brought up in story?
At least thats how i see it.

I know Wano ended ages ago at this point, but the thing about it that really irks me is that we never heard anything about Zoro’s hometown other than the fact that it probably came from Wano, which was already kinda obvious imo.
His town was Shimotsuki, which is a well known name in Wano.
Zoro’s dojo master was the son of Shimotsuki Kozaburo, who made the Wado ichimonji!!
Zoro even bears a striking resemblance to Ushimaru, though Oda did confirmed that he’s not his father (but never said anything about them not being related, perhaps an uncle?)
I feel like the Shimotsuki/ Roronoa lineage should have been explained in greater detail, and perhaps it still has yet to be, but Wano arc would have been prime time to reveal that.
I mostly absolutely refuse to believe that Kuina died falling down the stairs, or if she even died at all. I think it was all an elaborate plot made up by SOMEONE who found out their lineage. Dare I even say the WG, since Shimotsuki cut itself off from Wano’s closed borders.
All of this potential to explore and we got nothing but the family name mentioned, sword names and their creators. And some dude that just...really looks like Zoro.

One Piece Theory: Wano Spoilers
--------------------------------------------------------
Zoro is a member of the Shimotsuki family. More specifically, he's the grandson of Ushimaru. I know this theory isn't that much of a gotcha, since Zoro literally looks exactly like Ushimaru and a young Ryuma, but there's more to it than just the facial features, spiky hair, swordsmanship, and injured left eye.
We don't know about Zoro's past before he challenged the dojo in Shimotsuki Village. The village was founded by the swordsmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo after he illegally left Wano 55 years ago. He was the smith who created the Wado Ichimonji and Enma. Both of which are now in the hands of Zoro. A few years after Shimotsuki Village was founded, Kozaburo settled down and had a child named Koshiro, who we know as the head of the dojo and Kuina's father.
Other members of the Shimotsuki clan include: Yasuie and Toko. Both of which quickly befriended Zoro in Wano. Speaking of Wano, Ushimaru had been the daimyo of Ringo for many years before dying during the reign of Orochi and Kaido. Ringo is also where Zoro, Toko, and Hiyori stayed when Zoro was trying to get back the Shusui from Onimaru.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Onimaru, who has been the companion of Ushimaru, is 69 years old (nice). It is likely that Ushimaru would be a similar age if he were still alive. Unfortunately we don't actually know Ushimaru's date of birth or age at death, so we can't know for sure. However, 70 is a pretty typical age for a grandparent of a 21 year old. Garp is 78, so Zoro's gramps would probably be around a similar age. And we know for sure that Ushimaru isn't Zoro's father, because Oda said so in the SBS for chapter 1024. In that SBS, Oda also said that he might show Ushimaru's bloodline again later or he might just keep it a secret.
Tumblr media
The other known member of the Shimotsuki family who I haven't talked about much so far is Ryuma. Ryuma is the sword god whose corpse and sword were stolen from Wano by Gecko Moria following Moria's defeat at the hands of Kaido. In his youth, Ryuma was just like Zoro, both in looks and in personality: he was also way too eager to fight and was kind of oblivious. We know that Ryuma's blade, Shusui, was the treasure of Wano and that it was given to Zoro after he defeated zombie Ryuma in Thriller Bark. But some time before he acquired Shusui, Ryuma used a sword that resembled the Yubashiri, another legendary sword that made its way into Zoro's possession.
Tumblr media
We've seen that Zoro has had direct ties (and has gotten along well) with all of the known members of the Shimotsuki family, except for Ushimaru. We do know that Ushimaru is a direct descendant of Ryuma. This makes sense since they look and act so similar. With that same line of thinking, it would also make sense for Zoro to be in that bloodline. He clearly doesn't look anything like Kozaburo, Koshiro, or Kuina.
There are also some pieces of the puzzle that are missing on Ushimaru's end. For example, Zoro and Ryuma both wear their swords on their right side, suggesting that they're lefty's. We don't know if the same goes for Ushimaru; we just know that in the past there were times when he wielded two swords. Another missing piece is his birthday. Shimotsuki is an old Japanese word for November. Both Ryuma and Zoro have birthdays in November (the 6th and 11th, respectively), but we don't know when Ushimaru was born. We also don't know the birthday of Kozaburo, but none of the other known Shimotsuki's have birthdays in November (aside from Onimaru, oddly enough). The third missing piece is blood type. Kuina and Koshiro both have type S, Toko and Yasuie have type F, Ryuma and Zoro have type XF, and Kozaburo and Ushimaru's are unknown.
So now we've gone over all the facts and circumstantial evidence, but it leaves us with a problem. If Ushimaru is in fact Zoro's grandfather, then how tf did Zoro end up in Shimotsuki Village? We know Kozaburo went there 55 years ago, but Ushi never left Wano (that we know of). I mean, it was illegal to leave the country and Ushi ended up being the daimyo of Ringo, so he probably didn't commit any major crimes. But maybe he did, who knows. Could Ushi's child have ended up leaving Wano with Kozaburo? We don't know if there were any other Shimotsuki's who ended up in the East Blue. Another possibility lies with Ryuma himself. Well, Ryuma's corpse. The fall of the Kozuki clan was 20 years ago. Zoro was born 21 years ago. Ryuma's corpse was stolen by Moria 23 years ago. Perhaps, Ushimaru's son or daughter was also taken (or escaped) at this time? If they did leave Wano at this time, then they would've had 2 years to find a partner, knock up or get knocked up, and then a few years to find the other known Shimotsuki's that left Wano, drop their kid off with them, and then leave or die.
Tbh considering the family ties of each of the other Strawhats (that we know of - *cough cough* Nami *cough cough* Franky), none of this would be super wild if it were true for Zoro.
--------------------------------------------------------
Anyways, that's the end of this theory. Sorry I didn't feel like proofreading. I'm always open to thoughts, ideas, and comments, so feel free to give your two cents. My next theory post will either be a mini theory about Franky or a big one about the influence of gods in One Piece.

Semi related about that post you had about luffys non existent daddy issues lol. I've not been into one piece long but do we know if zoro actually knew his parents or not? Does he ever mention them? The anime has him kinda roaming around as a orphan before the dojo but I think in the manga he's just in the dojo and that's it.
// just in case, spoilers about zoro's family.
we don't! manga zoro hasn't really mentioned his parents on page as far as I can remember, and all his childhood flashbacks are either about kuina, koushiro or kozaburo. I think it's only the SBS about the shimotsuki family tree that goes into detail about his lineage in general. in it, it's said his dad died in a battle against pirates and his mom of an illness. he was pretty young when he joined the dojo (I believe the wiki says he was 8?) so they likely died before that. by oda's own words in the SBS zoro's completely unaware of how he's related to the shimotsuki too rip.
I find it pretty weird overall bc hey, the village itself has the family name and they supposedly traveled together from wano to the island they founded the village in, with 10 people of the group staying in it. it's not like they were hundreds so unless shimotsuki furiko (zoro's grandmother) fucked off quickly after the village's foundation to marry pinzoro and had a kid (zoro's dad) without anyone knowing, I can't see why no one would be aware about zoro's existence/connection to the shimotsuki but shrugs. my guess is oda just couldn't fit family drama into zoro's character this far along, especially not since most of them are dead anyway and he's never been shown to care about his biological family for it to ever become an issue wrt his relationship with the straw hats. he also said this stuff is unlikely to come up in the main story ever again so.

I’m confused on Zoro’s family tree. Does this mean him and Kuina are related? What is a Damyo?
Yes! since Zoro's grandma is a Shimotsuki, and Kuina is too they are somehow related! I think they are probably cousins, cause probably Kozaburo is Furiko and Ushimaru's brother (this is just an assumption). In any case both share the same blood, the Shimotsuki one. Kuina from his dad, Zoro from his grandma! A Daimyo is the ruler of a certain region, for example, Shimotsuki Ushimaru was the Daimyo of Ringo (the snowy part of Wano). Basicaly the subordinates of the Shogun (Oden-Momo) (shogun translates to "general" in japanese) so, you could say the Shogun are like the president and the daimyos the gobernors or even mayors (depending on the country's polical system)

One Piece Chapter 1094 - Initial Thoughts
Tumblr media
And we are back again
Another week break has been rough but we're back with our Straw Hats in Egghead
Let's see how it goes
Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release
Starting with a Shimotsuki-themed colour spread; Zoro in the middle of course but you have Kozaburo, Koushiro, Kuina on the right, Yasuie, Ushimaru (plus Onimaru) and Ryuma (Zombie and I think regular) to the left. Seems only Toko is left out among the confirmed Shimotsuki
Well that's an ominous title as we pick up right where we left off
Graphical reminder that the Gorosei are above Vegapunk in chain of command
The Mark IIIs have started their assault on the Navy though as the VegaTank 8 sticks to the cloud path with its special wheels
Sanji's lady senses immediately pick up where Bonney is, as he darts into her direction
Vegapunk like 'a lady radar's not real but ok' XD
Bonney is under attack though, with a guy using like a shell Monk's Spade
Bonney been packing heat this whole time?
Gratuitous ass shot in a splits cartwheel while firing a gun
The attack is non-fatal, since it's called 'Near-Death Experience'
A Yohoho in the chat for the navy guy hit with it, he was suddenly bones for a second, and now there's the trauma
Bonney runs right into a Mark III but this one's not on our side
Old Lady Vice Admiral Bluegrass has commandeered this Mark III with her Ride-Ride Fruit, which allows her to command anything like a vehicle
Whoa lady the aging effects are temporary cool it down
Bonney once again stutters at the sight of her father's visage, which allows Sanji though to get the jump in to save her
Shell Spade man's attack is Whack-an-Otter, which I guess means he might have an Otter-based skill or fruit
With Bonney in hand Vegapunk drives to Sanji to make their escape
Back with Luffy vs Kizaru, and both are showing signs of fatigue
Kizaru's doing a lot of dipping out of the fight
The two, Zoro and Lucci then sense something though, the ominous aura felt by Jinbe and the other Vice Admirals
Also Nami, Chopper and Usopp are accounted for tending to Stussy
Saturn makes the order, all Pacifista are to cease
Knowing the chain of command, Atlas confirms that a Gorosei must be here
What the? WHAT IS THIS?
There's literally a summoning circle there!
Why did he need a boat if you just just summon him?
Marines are told that Saturn is coming, but you also have to be a certain rank (Commodore) to witness his arrival, all others must avert their gaze
This ritual circle is making a lot of emissions
I mean, the revision of '5 Elder Planets' makes sense and all but then you gotta use a pentagram to summon them
A non-Commodore didn't listen and gets immediately killed
no seriously WHAT IS THAT?
Saturn's fruit is not of this world, he's for sure an awakened zoan, black fire scarf like Lucci and Kaku wonder if the colour is reflective of alignment, but he's got like spider legs and a ram's horns and fur, also finger claws
My guess is the Ushi Oni, as Naruto fans would know it as the Gyuki aka the Eight Tails, they have toxic breath too
What's interesting for the Ushi Oni is that they do frequent around water, and have been attributed to poisoning water sources, maybe the Gorosei are the devils of which the fruits are named?
The Vegatank is knocked off its course by Kizaru, who barely missed the tank
Luffy's on his popeye energy, but he has to dodge one of Kizaru's laser, turning him into a spinning top again
But he uses the momentum for an ACOC Hook punch called a 'White Star Punch' in scanlations, sending the fist through the head much like he did with Kaido's face
Also some stars popped out for the headache Kizaru's gonna get
That seems to be Luffy's final blow though as he runs out of gas, right as Saturn recognizes him as Nika
I know the spider legs are intimidating but I just can't stop seeing Dr Kureha's trousers, Oda likes those flame legs
The Vegatank 8 is alas the most recent casualty of Egghead, but all its passengers are safe
...if not standing right in front of a towering Gorosei
There's some cold introductions between Saturn and Vegapunk
But Bonney is going straight for the kill, grabbing a sword and plunging it into Saturn's chest
Dialogue implies that the Gorosei must've commanded Kuma's personality wipe, maybe we'll cover what she saw next chapter
It has been 5 weeks since we have seen our wife, our queen, our light of the Revolutionaries, Nico Robin. WHERE ARE YOU HIDING HER ODA?
Well things continue to get more complicated.
We all knew Saturn would have to get involved but I don't think we were expecting a full demon summoning shit to go down. With Luffy exhausted in front of him too it's falling down to Sanji, Bonney and Franky to help him and the Punks escape.
Part of me feels like Kizaru will recover too, you don't see him KO'd after all. I am hoping that Zoro just finishes Lucci quickly after this though because I still don't buy that Lucci's in the Billion beri tier. Jinbe seems to be aware of the threat moreso that Nami, Chopper and Usopp so I wonder if he'll jump into action at all.
But obviously I doubt Bonney's stab has done anything really to Saturn, except probably invoked his rage from 'she's just a little girl' to *Kill Bill Sirens*. But I do very much hope we see that flashback, maybe Kuma will come in to save everyone again, either pawing Saturn away or pawing the Sunny away with the Punks and Crew.
There's still also the threat of Blackbeard there, that would definitely be a fruit he'd want, maybe the Yami Yami no Mi was the fruit of a former Elder Planet? But it could also invite an unlikely alliance. Or the Revolutionaries simply show up? Speed not really on their side though unless Dragon kinda flies there. Caribou gonna jump in an steal the Gorosei, clutch move of the century XD
Many directions things can go, but I very much need to know that Robin's safe and sound.
