Dylan Quinn──

Reece Quinn, Dylan's father. 37 years old. He's an art restorationist painter! Reece and Dylan share a love of art, and Reece is very supportive that Dyl wants to take their art all the way. He's a bit clumsy in his concerns about Dylan's education that it gets them in a few arguments but Dylan knows that at the end of the day their father just wants the best for them!

Laurel Benson, previously Quinn, born Carter, Dylan's mother. 43 years old. She lives in Austria now. They haven't spoken in almost five years. She's an art museum curator. She might have a newborn but that's just speculation on Dylan's part.

Shayne Walker──

Andrew Walker, Shay's father. 48 years old. Recently promoted to a high ranking manager in a heavy duty vehicle manufacturing business─he looks over the presentations of new models and keeps track of their quality. He used to fly all over the world to make sure their machines were working properly in overseas countries but now has a more permanent spot. Shay gets his humour from his father and they have a very good relationship.

Deirdre Walker, Shay's mother. 47 years old. DeDe has a chronic illness that makes it hard for her to move for extended periods of time and as such has stopped working to take over full time at home. Shay and his mother bond over their love of food. She is very kind and full of heart to hearts──DeDe gives the best hugs in the world!

Danielle Walker, soon to be Peterson, Shay's older sister. 23 years old. Her fiance is Ryan Peterson (24). Owns her own flower shop! Danielle and Shay get along quite well, but they're not exactly talk every day close.

Ingrid Walker, Shay's younger sister. 8 years old. She likes to pla pranks on and with Shay, and is becoming quite the jokester like her brother!.

Kinsley Grace-Cameron──

Emilia Grace, Kinsley's mother. Emilia is Kinsley's birth mother, from her egg─she carried Kinsley to full term pregnancy (Kinsley was almost a week late.) She died two years ago, aged 36. She was a criminal defence lawyer. Kinsley and Emilia were extremely close.

Lavender Cameron, Kinsley's mother. 39 years old. Works as a corporate business lawyer, is currently the sole owner of Grace and Cameron, the law firm. Never got on the best with Kinsley and their relationship has only gotten colder since her wife's death. Lavender has very high expectations for her daughter, but deep down she just wants Kinsley to do her best and be happy.

Jared Montgomery, Kinsley's father. 32 years old. Works as an auditor for New York's state government. Doesn't take part in Kinsley's life as a father, but he does have a... amicable relationship with her.

The Grace Aunts/Cousins. Emilia's sisters, Elizabeth (40), Emberly (38) and Elise (28). Elizabeth's son Karden (21) and Emberley's twins Georgina and Gabriella (19).

The Cameron Aunts/Uncles/Cousins. Lavender's brothers, Malachite (46) and Flint (38) and sister Lilac (27). Malachite's sons Sterling (24) and Roland (23), Flint's daughter Jade (21) and Lilac's son Oliver (4).

bar Oliver, Kinsley is the youngest of the cousins and is now under the most scrutiny from her family to live up to their legacy. Kinsley doesn'y get along with most of her extended family, but used to be closer to her cousins Georgina and Gabriella before her mother died.

Jaxon/Jasmin Montomery──

Archibald Montgomery, J's father. 53 years old. CEO of a business company... something to do with stocks... oil or gold or something. Declared J disowned a few months ago.

Hannah Montgomery, previously Morgenstern, born Hastings, J's mother. 51 years old. Current Mayor for New York. Trying very hard to keep contact with J... trying very hard to keep control of J.

Arabella Montgomery, J's little sister. Newly turned 11 years old. Loves J so very much, it's caused tension between Bella and her parents... who are on the verge of a divorce!

Jared Montgomery, J's paternal uncle. 32 years old. Works for Hannah in their municipal government, he is an auditor.

Peter Hastings, J's maternal uncle. 44 years old. Working as an engineer for a train line company. Very protective of J and Arabella, currently letting J stay in his apartment.

Theodore/Theodora/Theo Wesley──

Miles Wesley, Theo's father. 42 years old. Neurosurgeon.

Paulina Wesley, born Prescott, Theo's mother. 43 years old. Pediatric Surgeon.

both of Theo's parents are very loving but they're also very busy... Theo tends to stay out of their way when they're at home because they don't want to bother their parents when they're so tired/supposed to be resting.

Choices Review: Queen B

Heads up, thoroughbreds! This should've been a GOC book for sure: female bullies are a thing for guys, too, and we can care about fashion, popularity, and seduction.

Book 1 follows your adventures as a transfer student to one of the most prestigious colleges in the country--so of course everyone has to be rich, stuck-up, and status-obsessed. Oh, and it comes with a popularity contest known as "The T" which you must climb in order to overthrow mean girl Poppy Sinclair (who looks like Regina George, but could never). You're joined by several allies (if you can afford them), your roommate Zoe, and your professor. Sounds easy enough, right? You can be flirty, be mean, be kind, and it'll show at certain points of the story. But while it is fun, it isn't without some drawbacks, in my opinion. I already ranted about how manipulative MC is to their professor, who doubles as their LI, but in case you missed it: she is the WORST. The professor flirted with her at a bar before knowing she was a student, and shuts it down when they find out. If you choose to romance them, MC essentially guilt-trips them into a relationship by saying "I'd never want to ruin your career," despite not really having done or said anything to show it. You desperately try to get them to open up, and when they finally do, you find out someone tries to implicate you being in a relationship with them (even if it's not true), and you cut them off without explanation in order to spare them--AKA doing exactly what you didn't want them doing and then getting mad when they want to see you. It's super unfair, and it kind of sucks if you only romance men, because they're the only male LI option (a rare situation in Choices for multi- LI books), and you're doing them SO wrong. As for Poppy, she's a Regina George clone, but a pale imitation. Based on this story, I think using Courtney Shayne would've been better, and it'd give her an edge. Is it too much to ask for a multi-faceted mean girl who could be into academics or athletics? Possibly being the product of an affair doesn't make you all that interesting, Poppy. Zoe and Carter are just fun times, though; no notes for them! I'm SUPER curious as to why MC would be hanging out with their professor at the end of the book during vacation if they're not romantically involved, ngl. I feel like that should've taken into account who we romanced.

Book 2 is more of book 1 redux: your professor is under investigation this time around, and there's a new queen on the horizon who wants to take us down along with Poppy, who occasionally sides with us to take her down. The new baddie on the scene keeps their identity a secret, hidden amongst your new friends, but it was pretty obvious to me who it was--she didn't try hard enough. Perhaps it's because "mean girl" stories are generally one-and-done rather than being a series, but this just felt like they were trying to recapture the same story as book 1: sex, drama, and popularity, with no real variant for it. I don't really have much to say about it, looking back on it. It was just kind of...eh. Pretty to look at, but lacking in interesting content. And don't think I forgot how they called Professor Kingsley thicc in book 1 and then said they "lacked volume" when they tried twerking (cringe to the MAX; idc if you're one of my favorite Chocies LIs).

Overall, it was a fun ride, but the sequel did more of the same thing. It didn't really do anything new or crazy. Call me when you've got something rave-worthy.

Robert McGinnis The Corpse that Came Calling, paperback cover, 1964

Robert Edward McGinnis (born February 3, 1926) is an American artist and illustrator. McGinnis is known for his illustrations of more than 1,200 paperback book covers, and over 40 movie posters, including Breakfast at Tiffany's (his first film poster assignment), Barbarella, and several James Bond and Matt Helm films.

Born Robert Edward McGinnis in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was raised in Wyoming, Ohio.

McGinnis became an apprentice at Walt Disney Studios, then studied fine art at Ohio State University. After wartime service in the Merchant Marine he entered advertising and a chance meeting with Mitchell Hooks in 1958 led him to be introduced to Dell Publishing began a career drawing a variety of paperback covers for books written by such authors as Donald Westlake (writing as Richard Stark), Edward S. Aarons, Erle Stanley Gardner, Richard S. Prather, and the Michael Shayne and Carter Brown series.

McGinnis later did artwork for Ladies' Home Journal, Woman's Home Companion, Good Housekeeping, TIME, Argosy, Guideposts, and The Saturday Evening Post.

He was main title designer for The Hallelujah Trail (1965).

McGinnis's attention to detail was such that when he was assigned to do the artwork for Arabesque he requested Sophia Loren's tiger stripe dress be sent for him for a model to wear so he could get the right appearance.

In 1985, McGinnis was awarded the title of "Romantic Artist of the Year" by Romantic Times magazine for his many romance novel paperback covers.

Since 2004, McGinnis has created cover illustrations for the Hard Case Crime paperback series.

Starting in 2016, McGinnis has painted a number of retro-style covers for reissues of books by Neil Gaiman.

He is a member of the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. McGinnis is the subject of a documentary film, Robert McGinnis: Painting the Last Rose of Summer, by Paul Jilbert.

There's no case too big for these three radio private eyes. First, Lon Clark is Nick Carter, Master Detective in "The Case of the Priceless Prose" (originally aired on Mutual on December 14, 1947). Then, Dick Powell looks for "The Star of Savoy" as Richard Rogue in Rogue's Gallery (originally aired on NBC on June 23, 1946). Finally, Jeff Chandler is on the job in the Big Easy in "The Case of the Gray-Eyed Blonde," a syndicated mystery from The New Adventures of Michael Shayne.

Anthonie Tonnon is a musician based in Dunedin, New Zealand.  And while he no doubt honed his pop smarts on Dunedin artists, he doesn’t necessarily have the Dunedin sound (if I was going to say he was influenced by any Dunedin band it would be Sneaky Feelings or Shayne Carter). 

I’m a music guy.  I listen to lyrics, but they are rarely make-or-break for me.  However, Tonnon’s lyrics are just as important as his music.  This is an artist with a strong social conscience about the world around him.  Check out “Water Underground” on this release and “Mataura Paper Mill” (March 2020...not yet part of a physical release), and read about his inspiration.

While his vocals don’t fully remind me of Morrissey, his lyrics and devotion to subject do.  The songwriting also recalls the finest work of The Ocean Party.

“Successor” was released by Canape King Records and Wild Kindness Recording Co.  I heard about this release from Ian Henderson’s Pop Lib “New Zealand Music Month” blog.
