We are proud to be co-presenting Victor Schertzinger’s "Forgotten Faces" (1928) at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival’s Day of Silents, Saturday, December 2 at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. FNF prez Eddie Muller will be introducing the film.
Heliotrope Harry (Clive Brook) and Froggy (William Powell) are partners in crime—genteel armed robbery—at least until the cuckolded Harry commits an even bigger offense. Before Harry goes to prison, he leaves his baby girl on the doorstep of a wealthy couple to keep her out of the clutches of his no-good wife Lilly (Olga Baclanova) and tasks Froggy with keeping close tabs. But Froggy is no match for Lill. Live musical accompaniment will be performed by the Sascha Jacobsen Ensemble. Tickets are available at the SFSFF’s website https://silentfilm.org/ados-2023-schedule/
Please use promocode NOIR to receive $2 off the cost of your ticket. While you’re there be sure to check out the other five screenings on the schedule.

San Francisco Silent Film Festival Opens July 12 with a “Swashbuckler.”
Tumblr media
As France is currently struggling with violent social turmoil on the streets of Paris, it’s perhaps unusually fitting that the 26th annual San Francisco Silent Film
Festival opens on July 12 with the 1929 classic “The Iron Mask.”
From the musings of philosophers like Voltaire and literary works of writers like Alexander Dumas, the political and social atmosphere of France has always been frothed and complex, and few stories express it so rivetingly as the legend of “the man in the iron mask,” upon which both Voltaire and Dumas got their inspiration. And from which, the 1929 film is loosely based.
Initially released as a sequel to the 1921 hit "The Three Musketeers,” the film “The Iron Mask” was also swashbuckling actor Douglas Fairbanks’ goodbye’ to the genre that had made him a major star as “talking pictures” took hold.
Mostly his departure was due not so much to the advent of “talkies” as it was to Fairbanks’ declining health. Live music to accompany “The Iron Mask” will be by the Guenter Buchwald Ensemble with Masaru Koga on saxophone, and Frank Bockius on percussion.
Film historian Jeffery Vance will introduce the film at the festival’s Wednesday opening at 7:00 PM at the Castro Theater.
The Castro Theater is one of the last remaining movie theaters in the United States of the silent film era.
SFSFF key staff will be present at the opening such as Artistic Director Anita Monga, Executive Director Stacey Wisnia, Senior Film Restorer Kathy Rose O’Regan. Also attending the Opening Night event will be Patrick Stanbury, representing Photoplay of London, whose team is responsible for the recent digital restoration of “The Iron Mask.”
The largest and most prestigious festival devoted to silent film in the Americas, SFSFF this year will present twenty-three programs, all with live musical accompaniment, including fifteen recent film restorations.
Seven of those restorations will make their North American premieres at the festival—among which are three SFSFF projects.
Just like today, the early days of film was something that fascinated people from all walks of life. Even back then, more than 100 years ago, people in many places made films. It wasn’t just in the United States.
Seven countries are represented at this year’s festival with films from Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, & Soviet Ukraine.
More than 30 extraordinary musicians from around the world will be accompanying the screenings.
The Musicians include:
Wayne Barker (US), Frank Bockius (Germany), Guenter Buchwald (Germany), Stephen Horne (UK), Masaru Koga (US), Utsav Lal (UK), Will Lewis (US), Ben Model (US), the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra (US), Maud Nelissen (Netherlands), and the Sascha Jacobsen Quartet (Argentina/US).
Also, this year’s SFSFF 2023 is dedicated to the memories of SFSFF cofounder Stephen Salmons and longtime board member Russell Merritt.
When founders Melissa Chittick and Stephen Salmons put on the first San Francisco Silent Film Festival 26 years ago in 1996, 1,800 people attended the one-day, three-film event.
Over the years, annual attendance at SFSFF events has grown to more than 25,000 with dozens of seldom seen films screened.
Tumblr media
With five days of programs from the festival opening on July 12 to the closing on July 16, movie fans of all kinds will be entertained and amazed at the mastery of the early days of filmmaking; and will no doubt see how much the pioneers of film helped pave the way for the “blockbuster” HD “special effects” movies we enjoy today.

No sé
Buenas noches lector

Mary Mallory / Hollywood Heights: Silent Films’ Broad Range on Display at San Francisco Festival
While the recently concluded 27th SFSFF moved from the beautiful vintage Castro Theatre to a new barnlike structure adjacent to the remaining structure from the 1915 Panama Pacific Intl. Exposition, it once again featured diverse programming offering an emotional, humanistic punch. Covering such themes as pirates, alienation and anxiety, damaged individuals, the end of life, and glimpses of the…

Silents, Please!
Anticipating the SFSFF’s Day of Silents Makes My Endorphins Rise by Meredith Brody (December 1, 2022) William Haines and Marion Davies in SHOW PEOPLE I keep my TV tuned (do we say tuned, nowadays?) to TCM. It’s what greets me when I snap on the TV (do we say snap on, nowadays), and has resulted in me being surprised that The Apartment or The Women or Wild River or Touch of Evil is playing. I…

From 1916. " Sherlock Holmes ". Starring William Gillette. This is a previously lost and rediscovered silent film. It has been fully restored. Now for some background information: Sherlock Holmes 1916 is an American silent film. The screenplay was adapted by the 1899 stage play starring William Gillette as Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. It was produced by Eassanay Studios in Chicago. Released Date: May 15,1916. Running time 116 minutes (7 reels). Silent with English Intertitles. And appropriate silent music accompaniment. All surviving prints of the 1916 Sherlock Holmes were once thought to be lost. However, on October 1,2014 , it was announced that a copy had been found in a film archive in France. Preservation Status: The San Francisco Silent Film Festival and the Cinematheque Francaise announced that a print had been found in the Cinematheque collection in Paris. The restoration of the film was seen by the SFSFF board President Robert Byrne and in collaboration with Cinematheque Francaise. The French Premiere of the restored film took place in January 2015 and the US Premiere took place in May 2015. The print was found in a nitrate negative of the nine reel serial with French language Intertitles which were translated from the French back into English by Daniel Gallagher in consultation with William Gillette's original 19th century manuscripts, which are preserved at the Chicago History Museum. The film had been mixed up with other Holmes related media at the Cinematheque Francaise and had been incorrectly labeled.

The street smells like Hot Cookie cookies, Castro Coffee Company, and faintly popcorn, perhaps? Queuing at one of the great show places of the art of cinema for @sfsilentfilm . I took the day off to luxuriate in my favorite building in the city, which I haven't been inside since the pandemic, and to make sure I heard Dr. Philip Carli, the house accompaniest at @drydentheatre , work his magic. I was so spoiled as a Selznick Student getting to hear him accompany silent films regularly. #sfsff2022 #sfsff #castrotheatre (at Castro Theatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdWMzbtplOP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
