now i want to know about the empty man

ok so i’m like 9 and i have to write a spooky story for english class. there also happens on my street to be a house with a full length window next to the door. u can see their coat hanger and it always has a long coat and hat on so it always looks like a creepy silhouette of a guy

i construct a narrative where if you look at this guy as you walk past, he can follow you and try to eat your soul. he wants to eat your soul because he’s empty. like, really empty. there’s nothing beyond the outer layer of his skin. he has eyelids but no eyes underneath them. he has a mouth but no teeth (you don’t need teeth, i reasoned, to eat souls. souls are like soup)

anyway i get a great grade in english because i’m a decent creative writing kid and my teacher is convinced i’m the next tolkien. sure. all good. except i have a very strong imagination and now i have to walk past the empty man every day and he might eat my soul

winter was the worst (this went on for years btw) because i had to walk past his house when it was dark and his silhouette was really clear

eventually i accidentally looked at him enough times that i figured we were chill. you know, i guess he wouldn’t want to eat his creator’s soul anyway, because then where would he be? i still live in that street and i’m pretty fond of him now. i kinda look forward to winter. it’s empty man season! see you again next year buddy
