In July, Andrés Lemus-Spont (my partner in life and in some of my creative work) and I were invited to be artists-in-residence at Folly Arts, a new organization in southeastern Ohio cofounded by artists Kate Hampel and James Pepper Kelly.

Throughout our weeklong residency, Andrés and I each worked on our own projects, with his mostly involving building a large-scale interactive sculpture from salvaged natural materials outside along a local highway, and mine mostly involving writing and editing indoors. Together, we led our first out-of-state FrankenToyMobile workshop (photos here and here) as part of Glouster First Fridays—a monthly community event sponsored by Dirty Girl Coffee, a badass local coffee company with “a social mission to promote women’s economic progress in Ohio’s Appalachia.”

On our breaks from creating, we visited a nearby state park and parts of Athens, and even attended a neighbor family’s Fourth of July party. We met a number of local creatives, arts supporters, and other residents, including a few dozen youth who participated in our workshop. Thanks to Folly’s wonderful cofounders, we also got to chat with Ohio-based musician Brian Harnetty (a recent A Blade of Grass Fellow for his Forest Listening Rooms project; see video), play with their delightful toddler, and eat seriously artful and delicious meals!

The Folly residency was such a warm and warming experience, with incredibly supportive, encouraging, and thoughtful hosts—both amazing creators in their own right—and surrounded by curious and welcoming community members. I felt very honored to be invited to Folly Arts so early in their journey and am excited to see how they grow.
