In this week's #DCVWsaturdayvintagedrop, we add a clutch of attractive 1970s Seiko 6139s - to include a seldom seen "Aussie Pogue" on a Stelux bracelet and a "Deep Blue" JDM, as well as a "Coke" JDM on @uncleseiko's just released SpeedTimer bracelet and a "Bruce Lee" on a funky stainless-steel rally bracelet. We also re-stocked our Type 2 military automatic - now offered with a strap compass - and added a 1960s Seiko 6619, with a fantastic steel gray dial. My 'new' #Seiko6139-6019 aka 'Deep Blue' from August 1969, Resist/Resist which I got last year to function as a donor watch for my other #Seiko61396019. I was going to use the 2 piece sweep hand. This piece still has it's early matte hands. The crystal has been replaced and there is some dirt around the crystal and there are some dirty spots on the dial. This baby just needs a proper service and a cleanup and it'll shine even more. There are some dings on the case but the dings are a lot less than on my first #61396019 so I'm not going to use it as a donor anymore because it just looks too good. The dings give the watch it's character also. DCVW, @VintageSeiko, @seikoman35 (& of course @two_vintage_seikos) have teamed up to bring a week-long event five decades in the making, a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Seiko’s legendary 6139 automatic movement! Accordingly, we are kicking off with a personal story each for our own 6139s – and want your personal story of your attachment to your 6139 – be it something you bought to celebrate a life even, a special event you wore it to, or how it saved your life once (hey, it could happen!). So from March 11th through March 17th, bring us your 6139 pics and stories – tagged, naturally, with the hashtag #Seiko6139fifty. On to some of mine – the picture here represents my linear progression/obsession with this historic movement; I started, of course, with the 6139 Pogue. The Pogue here will never win any beauty contests, and to be honest, I wasn’t immediately sold on it when I bought it circa 1990-something, what with its somewhat garish bright yellow color. But it grew on me, and in time, so did my love of the 6139. Fast forward over the years, and I added more, like any good #seikoholic. Next up was what we now call the 6139 “Cevert,” then a 6139-6012, a silver 6139 (why does this not have a badass nickname yet, like literally every other vintage Seiko chronograph??), and a second Cevert. This picture also represents 6139’s to come, with two rough early 6139s at the bottom - a June 1969 Pogue proof/proof and a May 1970 6139-6000 Speedtimer, both awaiting restoration. For today's #seiko6139fifty, a rather unique July 1976 Seiko 6139-7002, with a bead-blasted case and matching NATO with bead-blasted hardware. Took this traveling overseas a few years back, in a Pelican 1020 case with three other watches. Customs officials in a country that will remain unnamed, upon discovering I had the obscenely high number of five watches for two weeks of travel (the horror!) pulled me aside for more "in-depth" screening. Eventually found out customs thought I was smuggling counterfeit watches (quite ironic, given this is #feikofriday)! After discovering none of my watches were Rolex, they let me go. My Seiko 6139-6019 aka 'Deep Blue' from July 1969, Resist/Resist. This reference wasn't released 'Proof'. I'm so lucky to have found this one. Such a rare reference to find. It was released for the North American market only. Note the difference with other 601x references, below the Seiko logo it says 'Automatic' only and not 'Chronograph Automatic' like the other references do. It's wearing its battle scars from the past, a pretty beaten up crystal, the lume isn't good anymore, the sweep hand is incorrect and the bracelet isn't correct either but that will be fixed. Which stories could you tell? Hidden under that beaten up crystal is a dial in perfect condition. I already got a NOS crystal to replace it and soon it will have the correct sweep hand. You may think what's the fuzz about a sweep hand? The 6019 was released originally with the 2 piece sweep hand. Seiko 6139's with a 2 piece sweep hand which were send for servicing after mid 1970 got the hand replaced by a 1 piece sweep hand because they were less 'faulty', less 'hassle' to take care of. A perfectly logic step.
