"D'you think she cares?" His voice came across as a little worse for wear than it oughta. Death usually restored the body to peak order aside from a few scars, but here Martyn's throat was, scratchy and harder to parse than he woulda liked.

"What?" Came the reply. Scott shook his hand out, dirt particulates separating from his fingers as he did.

"Cleo, I mean. Obviously." Martyn laughed, leaning back against Scott's pretty little house, hand waving in a mockery of one of Scott's common gestures.

"Why would I know what Cleo thinks of you? We aren't teammates this go around." Scott turns back to his work, but it's still obvious how the previous victor felt about this game by how his voice catches at 'go around'.

Martyn winces, but he shakes it off within milliseconds. "You two are always allies! There hasn't been a go when you two haven't been conspiring. I'm asking because--"

"Martyn." Scott's voice was sharper than he meant, and it softens as he continues. "For one, I won't ask how you know more about mine and Cleo's relationship than either of us have told you. You and Grian get so clammy about that nonsense. For two, she hasn't mentioned you."

Martyn doesn't flinch, but Scott can tell that hurt him. Scott lived with him for a while, he knows. Martyn thinks himself infinitely cool and collected, but he isn't. He never has been and Scott's pretty sure he never will be. The blonde coughs. "Cool."

"Cool?" Scott laughs, looking up. Arcing underneath his hair from his right temple under his hair and around his throat is a lightning scar, and it glows slightly at the middle of his throat in a cool cyan. It aches. Martyn knows it aches, especially when Scott laughs. "Martyn, you were soulbound two goes ago. I know she's cool and all, but what's your hangup? Are you this hung up on Ren? Me?"

"What! Scott, you're having a giraffe. I don't get hung up on people."

There is a poignant silence. Martyn shifts uncomfortably. Scott rolls his eyes and returns to his work.

"Scott, I just wanna know how she is. If she ever thinks about me. I don't--I try not to think about it. The past, I mean. But it just... I may die but the soul lives on. Bones are buried but the soul is still here and it still feels that little string, y'know? We had the same soul, for a while. The same beating heart." Martyn finally moves from his ramrod straight stance, squatting beside Scott, a gloved hand extended.

The palm is cold. Ice fucking cold. The diamond shaped mark seems to give his flesh freezerburn as he nears the scar to any other living being. Any that are around, anyway. Martyn is cagey about it--Scott wasn't being mean. He has four of those diamonds across his body, though he supposes he's lucky that they're all... eh, relatively easy to hide. The one on his cheek, the back of his neck, and right over his heart were harder to conceal, though. That, and the massive ragged timepiece seemingly slashed across his back. The scar that never healed. The reminder to keep his ears open. To listen. To betray when it suits him. That one still pulses red, sore and obvious.

Scott doesn't know that a diamond burns for him as Martyn nears him. He doesn't know that it gets a little harder to breathe as the scalding diamond on the back of his neck makes itself very known. Bound, again and again, had he always found himself following after another? Hitching his soul into pieces again and again? Where would a diamond appear this time, for Jimmy? Where else would the cracks spread? Scott flicks his nose.

"You're absolutely doing that thing again where you just stare at me and look pensive. Fine, you want to know so bad what I think they think? Fine, if it'll get you to either go away or help me plant." Scott finally stands up fully and stretches his back out, then his arms high above his head. He reaches over to grasp Martyn's upper arm. "Cleo is a complicated person. They do care. They also don't. You aren't the center of her universe and that is fine. For both of you. Worrying about what they think won't make you less afraid of what comes next. Holding onto us--me, Cleo, the Ahaliance, Ren, that won't give you the peace you're looking for. You and Grian hold on tighter to the past than the rest of us. Let us go, Martyn, and let what joy you can have now happen."

The diamond hurts like hell. Like Martyn has slammed back into a pool of lava and it is eating him alive. It feels like dying when Scott holds his arm. He doesn't react. Scott doesn't know everything. "Alright, alright, I don't need an intervention here, mate! I'm genuinely just trying to see if she's mad at me, and you're talking different breeds and stronger memories. Bah. Maybe you're holding on to Cleo."

"Am I, then?" Scott snorts, and thankfully releases Martyn's arm. The burning subsides, somewhat.

"I think you are, honestly. I look away and suddenly you're gaslighting and gatekeeping and girlbossing! What about my gaslighting?" Martyn holds a hand to his chest as he fakes haughtiness.

"You're a bad liar, Littlewood." Scott kneels back in the dirt. "Now help me plant before you go back to our canary."

Martyn snorts, this time. "Our canary. Yeah, Scott, only me and Grian hold on." He does listen, though, and helps cover wheat seeds with dirt. As his right hand connects with the soil, it aches like a red winter, cold and bloody. He misses Ren. He misses Cleo, and Pearl, and Mumbo and everyone. He feels like there's a world where they could have been happy together, where they played games and laughed around Christmastime. As he looks at Scott, he wonders...

"Do you know what Christmas is?" His voice is more hesitant than he means for it to be.

"No, why?" Scott replies, shoving half a tuber deep into the earth.

"No reason. Just an old story." Then, that was the difference. He and Grian knew there was something beyond. No one else remembers what life extant a Watcher's game is like. He raises his head to watch the darkening horizon. Scott boxes his ear with a smile, and he shrugs. At least they have tonight to pretend like She wasn't watching. Like they were friends planting a field.

I wanna note that BigB's first secret task, as this post pointed out, is potentially lethal, like a Red Task Lite.

A big hole 3x3 all the way down can get players killed.

His second RedLite Task is more subtle with more normal task wording but still lethal

He can't call mobs by their names, none of them.

If a Creeper walked right behind someone he couldn't shout "Creeper!" He's have to say "run," or *behind you" or soemthimg else that wouldn't get pther players fight or flight instincts going nearly as quickly, for example

I only watched up to him reading his tasks so far so idk if the lethality of his tasks have been realized to any extent yet but I might start watching him for this, how he drives Grian up the wall, and also because I wanna be somewhat in on his goofy nonsensical shenanigans

To anyone else it was just a bit. A sappy one-liner and a joke. Various ‘awww’s went around the group, and Grian even gagged — with a grin to show he was joking. It was a statement so out of the blue, Etho never could’ve meant it.

The brown and red eyes that met his own proved the opposite. They shone brilliantly and fiercely, a devotion and loyalty and adoration so strong it made his entire body light up with life the moment he got near Joel. He always looked a little bit more alive. His phantom wings would heal a bit, and his eyes would always be slightly less dull around him.

Or, Joel is happy to be back around his soulmate again and remembers the time Etho had given him his heart. Literally.

Mumbo: Make a pun at every opportunity in a 5 minute conversation, minimum of 3 successful puns

alright so:

secret life smp is the latest installment in the life series, a series of minecraft death games where everyone has three lives, and people on their last (red) life become hostile. (this series is commonly called some variation of the "traffic light/life" series as each life corresponds to a color: green, yellow, or red.) after you lose your last life, you are out of the game and your series ends.

each iteration of the life series (its official name) has a different gimmick, and secret life's is twofold: 1), instead of having the normal row of ten hearts, everyone starts with 30 hearts- however, their health does not regenerate, and 2) at the start of each session (they play for 3 hour sessions all together once per week), everyone is assigned a secret task, which they must complete. they regain hearts by completing their tasks successfully, and (usually) they don't lose anything by failing.

that's the background context

and now we get to the actual character this is about

lizzie (channel name LDShadowLady) seemed to be starting off the series generally well- she completed her first task (write a poem about someone on the server and recite it to them) pretty easily, but then basically the rest of her series was just Struggle After Struggle

it was like murphy's law. everything that couldve gone wrong for her did. for the next several sessions, she ended up just getting terrible tasks (for example, one of them was "get the entire server to sleep through the night." do you know how hard it is to get 16 adult minecraft players to do Anything).

generally, these servers split up into factions pretty quickly, and this one was no different. lizzie, though- she didn't end up in one. she was alone against the world (which, when you play minecraft with the energy of an extremely paranoid, sopping wet bichon frise (<- literally googled "most anxious dog breeds" to get the vibes for that one), is not great). the closest thing she had to an ally was her husband joel (who was 1: mainly loyal to his own faction, and 2: accidentally caused 2 out of her 3 deaths.)

during week 5, she held a slumber/birthday party at her base, and invited the entire server to come to it (this was her trying to get everyone to sleep through the night). only one person showed up (it was her husband again). she failed her task because of this, and decided to invisibly ride around the server on a skeleton horse with no armor to sulk. which ended in her death, and put her on her last life

the very next session, she tried her best to kill people (her job as a red life), and to get revenge on those who had wronged her (so, everyone). it didnt go well, and with her own bad luck, she died falling into the void

she didnt have to die. her death was a direct result of her trying to do a favor for her husband, and there were so many moments where it could've been avoided. but it wasn't. she was the first to lose her last life and get eliminated from the series

the only person to even mourn her was joel. more people celebrated her death than mourned it. and im just supposed to be Normal about that

HI OKAY SO!!!!

You've might have heard of Grian, a Minecraft YouTuber famous for his incredible building skills and being on multiple SMPs over the years like Evolution SMP and Hermitcraft. What you probably don't know is that Grian runs a series every couple of months where people have a limited number of lives. People who are not in imminent danger of being eliminated are green and yellow lives. People who are close to being out are red lives, and they are the only ones who can attack anyone in the server. With a limited amount of lives and space, it becomes super interesting. There are multiple names for this series, mainly the Traffic Series (because of the colors that are like a traffic light) and the Life Series (because of these series' individual names). So far, there has been Third Life, Last Life, Double Life, and Limited Life, with a fifth series on the way in the future. No spoilers ahead, here's an explanation of these.

Third Life is the first of the Traffic Series. Here, each of the 14 participants have three lives- green, yellow, and red. Reminder that only red lives are able to kill. In Third Life, Grian is teamed with GoodTimesWithScar (or just Scar). Their main enemy is the Red Army, which you may also see referred to as Dogwarts or Renchanting. I won't spoil anything, but there's a huge amount of angst potential between Grian and Scar. The fandom as a whole, loving angst, has made this their main Grian duo. Obviously, some people don't care as much about these two (commonly called Desertduo), but a lot of people do.

In Last Life, 17 members spawned in with between two and six lives. Six to four lives is dark green, three lives is light green, two lives is yellow, and one life is red. Same rules about red lives as Third Life. This time, (usually once) every session the Boogeyman curse is placed secretly on one person. The Boogeyman's job is to kill someone who has more than two lives. If they don't complete this by the end of the session, they automatically become a red life. It's a really interesting mechanic. This time, Grian is teamed with MumboJumbo (Mumbo), SolidarityGaming (Jimmy), ImpulseSV (Impulse), and InTheLittleWood (Martyn). This group is called the Southlanders / Southlands. Grian and Mumbo, or Waffleduo, are the other big Grian duo because they've been friends for years and have loads of interactions outside of Last Life. There's also some ahangst (watch it and you'll understand) between Grian and Mumbo, as well as Grian and Scar, which people loved.

Then there's Double Life. In Double Life, there were only three lives and there was no Boogeyman. But the 14 participants were each assigned a soulmate that shared their lives, health, and healing. This meant there weren't a lot of alliances outside of soulmate bonds. Grian was randomly assigned Scar as a soulmate. However, he wasn't happy with this and instead decided to become secret soulmates with Ren's soulmate Bigbst4tz (Big B). The Desertduo angst in this season was very intense from the fandom.

Then there's Limited Life, which I actually haven't seen yet (I know, I know). Here, the 15 participants had a timer set with 24 hours to live. If you're over 16 hours, you're a green life. Between 8 and 16 hours, you're a yellow life. Under 8 hours, you're a red life. Each time you die, you lose one hour, and if someone kills you, they gain 30 minutes. Red lives can kill yellow and green lives, and yellow lives can kill green lives. Green lives are still passive. The Boogeyman mechanic was also added back, but they only lose one color if they fail (so a green life would become a yellow life, a yellow life would become a red life, and a red life would be eliminated). Boogeyman kills take 2 hours from the person killed and give 1 hour to the Boogeyman. Grian was allied with Jimmy and SmallishBeans (Joel) as part of the Bad Boys, but had to change alliances to PearlescentMoon (Pearl) and Big B because of an unfortunate series of events.

Martyn InTheLittleWood, a former member of Grian's Evolution SMP, has connected Evo lore to the Traffic Series lore by introducing the Watchers and Listeners, two groups of gods who hate each other and love messing with players. The Watchers trap the players in the Traffic Series, and the Listeners are trying to free the players. However, this lore is only really worked on by Martyn so you have to watch his POV for it. One thing you should know is that towards the end of Evo SMP, Grian was taken and made a Watcher, so... yeah. Lots of angst there.

Using Evo lore, past series and alliances, and a bit of cc!Grian's personality, the fandom tends to have a take on traffic!Grian that leans a little more into the 'fandomified traumatized main character who is Cursed' rather than looking at the Traffic Series by itself and judging Traffic!Grian from that alone. I do this too, because it's our fun fanon little guy and I love him. But in reality he's one of many POVs that just wants to keep things fresh and interesting for the fans.

Love how this session has the spectrum of “fast” tasks

there’s Gem who has to lie to everyone and fails within 2-3 minutes of her episode and then there’s Cleo who’s basically has to bait people in their own base to read her task and she’s done within 7 minutes of her episode.

+ also honourary mention to Pearl and Impulse’s tasks cuz Pearl being Impulse’s butler the same episode he can’t kill anything makes their tasks basically compliment each other

Future Edit: It seems like a lot of this session's tasks are intertwined with someone else's like Mumbo not being able to do a 1-on-1 situation while Tango has to be Mumbo's shadow, resulting in such situations

a bit intertwined, Martyn had to trick a yellow into guessing a "task" that never existed while Skizz had to make a yellow incorrectly guess his task, which then becomes his new task

This is my first time experimenting with a fic like this (or of this rating) as a sort of Writer's Training Wheels. Call it Tink's NSFW Testing Grounds lmao...this is all practice for a fic I'm planning for Flocks & Pyres. So until that comes out, enjoy some of Smajor's Smexy Diamond Tour 😏

Summary:

When Scott read his secret task at the start of session seven, it seemed fairly straightforward. He was sure he could get it done without too much hassle. You must ask other players what you can do for them in exchange for diamonds, they set the amount and the task. Simple enough, right? You succeed when you have made a total of 10 diamonds from AT LEAST 3 other players. Again, simple. Easy. A few diamonds per deal, a quick trip around the server, and he’d have everything he needed before they even hit the break. You must accept their first offer, and cannot convince them to give you more diamonds. Simple. Right...? But then a stray dirty joke leads Scott down a very different route with his task than expected. Even if it had been a slip of the tongue, Impulse’s first comment had counted as the other half of Scott's deal...and Scott was already holding the diamonds. Granted, Scott knew he didn’t have to say yes. He could march right over to the Secret Keeper and hit fail, ending his task before it even began. He could. He wouldn’t.   OR: Scott's task is worded slightly differently, and an unexpected (and satisfying) opportunity falls into his lap.
