An Elegy for Jerry
by Robert Hunter
Jerry, my friend,
you've done it again,
even in your silence
the familiar pressure
comes to bear, demanding
I pull words from the air
with only this morning
and part of the afternoon
to compose an ode worthy
of one so particular
about every turn of phrase,
demanding it hit home
in a thousand ways
before making it his own,
and this I can't do alone.
Now that the singer is gone,
where shall I go for the song?
Without your melody and taste
to lend an attitude of grace
a lyric is an orphan thing,
a hive with neither honey's taste
nor power to truly sting.
What choice have I but to dare and
call your muse who thought to rest
out of the thin blue air
that out of the field of shared time,
a line or two might chance to shine --
As ever when we called,
in hope if not in words,
the muse descends.
How should she desert us now?
Scars of battle on her brow,
bedraggled feathers on her wings,
and yet she sings, she sings!
May she bear thee to thy rest,
the ancient bower of flowers
beyond the solitude of days,
the tyranny of hours--
the wreath of shining laurel lie
upon your shaggy head
bestowing power to play the lyre
to legions of the dead
If some part of that music
is heard in deepest dream,
or on some breeze of Summer
a snatch of golden theme,
we'll know you live inside us
with love that never parts
our good old Jack O'Diamonds
become the King of Hearts.
I feel your silent laughter
at sentiments so bold
that dare to step across the line
to tell what must be told,
so I'll just say I love you,
which I never said before
and let it go at that old friend
the rest you may ignore.

Plea to stop using the Anderson Reservoir until seismic retrofit
This is an open Memo to Naglee Park List, Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD)  Representative Barbara Keegan (district 2), Board of Directors of SCVWD, San Jose Mayor Liccardo, Council-member for District 3 Raul Perez:
Today, I am making a plea to stop using the Anderson Reservoir until the planned seismic retrofit is completed.
I'll explain below why.
1) Stop the Coyote Creek flooding from happening
There's been talk about the creek being overgrown with vegetation and full of debris and not allowing enough flow, etc... That is all true, but the root cause of why the creek flow is even a concern in the first place is because of the undersized Anderson Reservoir outlet. Let's look at the data:
It took about a week for the Anderson reservoir to stop overflowing since the flood.
Tumblr media
The Coyote Creek level at William St. Bridge has been below the historical average for the month of February for the last 6 days.  The Edenvale gauge has been below average for about 4 days.
Tumblr media
This means:
a) The reservoir level is not coming down fast enough (shown in first graph) given that b) the coyote creek could handle much higher flow right now (shown in second graph) and allow the reservoir to drain faster.  Think about it as a huge tub full of water with a puny drain the size of a penny.
2) Eliminate the risk of people dying in the event of a dam failure due to an earthquake
we got a reminder a few days ago (02/26/17) that we live in earthquake country and that a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on the Calaveras fault within a mile of the damn would cause the alluvium soil to liquefy under the damn and the dam could drop about 25' sending a wall of water flooding Morgan Hill and eventually San Jose.  To mitigate this risk, the reservoir is not supposed to be fuller than 68%, but because of the undersized outlet, the water district doesn't have the right tools to manage the water level.
Tumblr media
The Anderson reservoir was originally designed with an insufficient outlet that would not allow proper reservoir level management.  That means we see these periodic "100-year flood" events happen every 20 years now.  But since 2009, we now know about the seismic concern and the unimaginable tragedy that would ensue if that happened.   From my perspective, based on everything we know now, the water district needs to make the right call and stop using the Anderson Reservoir now until it gets retrofitted.   The retrofit schedule keeps slipping, but in the meantime, it's immoral to expose so many people to a catastrophic failure due to an event that is squarely in the realm of possibilities.

I stumbled on this book in 1975.
Nine years prior, Alton Kelley literally lifted (pocket knife) the lithograph from a copy in the SF Public Library, rare book collection. Kelley and Stanley (Mouse) Miller used it in the famous Avalon Ballroom concert poster.

Lots of great quatrains about life and death, and many great illustrations.
Great condition. Published nearly 90 years ago.
Make an offer.
