Staff Pick of the Week
For my Staff Pick this week I’ve chosen several issues of the German magazine Die Woche or, “The Week.” Die Woche was published in Berlin from 1899-1944, and was originally published by newspaper magnate August Scherl, who was bought out by conservative politician and business man Alfred Hugenberg in 1916. Hugenberg, who was a member and leader of the conservative German National People’s Party (Deutschenational Volkspartei, or DVNP) during the Weimar Republic, would go on to back Hitler in his rise to power, in hopes of using Hitler as a puppet to advance his own nationalist agenda. When Joseph Goebbels became Reich Minister of Propaganda in 1933, he gained access to Hugenberg’s newspaper and publishing empire and used the publications as a tool to spread positive stories about Hitler and the Nazi party. Hugenberg had previously used Die Woche and other publications to support President Paul von Hindenberg during the Weimar Republic.
Die Woche focused on popular celebrities and athletes, news stories, and sensationalist crime stories. Our issues also feature reports from foreign places like Alaska and Australia, cartoons, and ads for toothpaste (zahnpasta) and cigarettes. Amid all of this is propaganda for Hitler and the Nazi Party. The cover of the September 7, 1938 issue (shown here) is bright red with Hitler and a swastika banner and each issue features either stories about Nazi leaders or rallies, or Hitler youth and celebrations of the perfect German mother.
It’s easy for us to think of the Nazis as a fringe group of extremists. However, publications like Die Woche remind us that the Nazi Party was normalized in German culture and society.

Yva Else Neulaender
Modephotographie der Dreissiger Jahre
Mit einem Text von Marion Beckers und Elisabeth Moortgat
Edition A. B. Fischer,Berlin 2009, 48 Seiten, PhotoEssenz, ISBN 978-3937434278
euro 20,00
Jahrhunderts.
