Heyo shippers & readers!
Early March and 3 months into the year; we thought we'd solicit something special this round by asking our members to nominate a fic they know has been in our runners-up queue again and again and again. That fic we've all been hankering to read and for whatever reason, was always the bridesmaid of fics we chose to read and discuss together. With a tiebreaker and an emergency poll, we finally landed on Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered Am I by colazitron.
Something about the hype really made this read worth the wait. Many of our members agreed that the themes therein felt like the most classic of our favourite motifs. Moreover that it was clearly inspired by a deeply resonant moment in shyan history really had us yelling during the live-read.

Look, just because Ryan looks good dressed as Indiana Jones, or dressed in various other things, and just because Shane maybe has a feeling or two about it, doesn't mean it's a thing, okay? Shane's got this.
Or: 5 times Shane had a feeling about Ryan's outfit, +1 time he did something about it
Book Club Thoughts
I'll read 50000 Shane spiraling about Indiana bergara and I'm so glad there was one out there I had never gotten to
I really also appreciate this fic for showing that level of how comfortable they are with each other, like that but also Shane saying "she thought I'm going to tap that" and Ryan laughing about it in the beginning of the fic
this is one of those fics I totally forgot about after reading in my early days of being a Watcher fan but it’s full of so many classic tropes, I’m very fond and it was fun to re-read
the humor in the writing is top notch. the tone is so consistent throughout, and nothing is ever fully serious
it was okay because shane wasnt turned on by it and he knew ryan wouldnt be either because no one is getting off but to then have this reverse dream where he’s trying so hard not to think about ryan, and he ends up conjuring a fantasy where he’s blowing ryan and getting off to it???? gorgeous beautiful amazing my kingdom to cola for this
Something about him being in the full outfit in first and last example where feelings begin vs are said aloud puts a nice bow on this story
I also love the way [the author] had Shane's worry and denial over his feelings for Ryan was the major conflict in getting together, but them actually getting together was so right and so easy for them and right there the whole time and ;aksdjf;lkdsj;fjkasl;d.
Shane’s progression from acknowledging Ryan being attractive, to admitting being attracted, and finally realizing it had become a feelings situation flows wonderfully. This is a delightful read.

I think, since I’ve been trying to be sparser in my words, I’ve been able to better emphasize what isn’t being said

It was late at night, when he started to cry.
He didn't want to cry, but he did.
It's been years since he's last let himself feel, or was it since he was last allowed to feel?
He choked on his sobs, uncomfortable with his tears. He's forgotten how to properly cry. His entire body is shaking, and the connections between flesh and wire hurts.
He stops crying. He starts crying again.
This continues for another few minutes, until he feels as if he can't possibly have any more tears.
He wipes his face, pulls the covers up to his chin, and falls asleep.

“Eh, I dunno about that. Seeing my beautiful face is a shock for many people.”
“Oh, I’m sure of it.”
“Hey, Koda? I don’t know about you, but it’s really late here.”
“Really?” Koda asks, then remembers that time zones exist. “Oh crap, what time is it over there?”
“It’s midnight. What about you?”
“It’s eight o’clock. Only four hours difference?”
“Oh hey, that’s not so bad.”
“It reduces our time,” Koda said, a bit whining.
“Not if I have anything to say about it.”
“What are you going to do? Move here? Send for me?”
“You’ll see.”

If this is by posted fics, then I remember writing Look What You’ve Done to Me was very very difficult, bcus, since it’s also a gift, for @daniel-bryan , I wanted to write it Good, n since my buddy usually wrote from the love interest’s pov, I felt a weird pressure to write Daniel Bryan’s pov as good as I could
10. Which fic has been the easiest to write?
2 of my fics in Spanish!!! My oc centric one, Rayos y Centellas, and my shyan one, oye cariño, solo pienso en ti ! Turns out writing in ur native tongue makes everything easier
11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?
It’s a very passionate hobby!!! I just!!! try to pour all of my love into everything I write!!!

Was gonna say my rewrite of the end of The Rover, but actually, my SPN fic Ube . Shit was peak inspired
16. If you only could write one pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?
Eridirk (Eridan Ampora/Dirk Strider from Homestuck) all the way. The one otp that’s stayed thru thick n thin <3
17. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?
A little mix of both, and tbh it depends on the fic, but I tend to write chronologically
18. Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?
I’ve started bullet pointing my ideas out before writing my fics, and so far, it’s been helping me be more streamlined n get my things written out faster n clearer!
19. Stephen King once said that his muse is a man who lives in the basement. Do you have a muse?
Is the need for representation in all the niche movies I keep watching a muse?
20. Describe your perfect writing conditions.
In my dark room, w music blasting from my laptop, the TV w a soft hum, I have the perfect playlist to get the mood right, curled up in my blankies, n my plushie Sweet Pea by my side
21. How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?
Zero, we rely on autocorrect & editing while typing and die like men
22. Choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style. (Person sending the ask is free to make suggestions).
YOU DON’T SEEM SCARED.
Del Rio shrugs. “Working as a cop, it makes you numb to some things. It’s good, it lets you react to things as you should, and not how you’d want to.”
YOU SOUND SAD ABOUT THAT.
He makes a noncommittal noise. “It is what it is.” He eats another spoonful of his ice cream, then gets a thought.
“Can you show up?”
HOW SO?
“Can you,” he tries, waving his spoon around, “Manifest?”
I DON’T KNOW. I’LL TRY.
“I’m sure you’ll do just fine,” Del Rio assures, and he can feel the air around him smile. The...world, he thinks, around him shifts just slightly, and there seems to be a chink in the armor for a moment before it goes away, as if someone had wiped the glass clear. He realizes that this is her, trying to show up in a physical form, step out of the phone.
He doesn’t know where to look, but then his confusion wanes when a butterfly shows up, fluttering towards him. It lands near his phone, skitters a bit, flaps its wings.
“Lucy?” he asks, transfixed on the butterfly. Its orange wings are bright under the sunlight.
I THOUGHT I’D TRY SMALL, FOR MY FIRST TRIAL.
“Well, you certainly nailed it.” He smiled warmly at the butterfly, and he had the crazy notion that it smiled back at him.

23. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?
Yeah, probably The Policeman lmao, I remember it today n I cringe a little at the very obvious refs to other fandoms I made. Despite that, it continues being one of my best hits!

Never
25. What do you look for in a beta?
I’m just thankful to have gotten a beta in general in life at all
26. Do you beta yourself? If so, what kind of beta are you?
I beta’ed once, and since English is my 2nd language, I pointed out syntax confusion, typos, n continuity errors
27. How do you feel about collaborations?
Can be done, it’s just that I am frightened. Tried doing that, it fell thru, n the new thing that came up, I still have to hold up my end of the bargain ;;-;;
28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
cries omg ok so!!! Chancy_Lurking ( @lurkerviolin ) is one of my faves, n we’ve become friends, n their Felix+ Sense8 series is the reason for it all, and u know it’s good if it managed to make a friendship that’s last its good while, and also they’re so nice, and we vibe so well!!! thegoatz ( @daniel-bryan ) is also now one of my bestest friends ever, and I wuv him so much, he is such a good kid, n he’s so enthusiastic about writing, and I hope that spark never goes out!!! And adamwhatareyouevendoing ( @skatingthinandice ) bcus she’s doing a rewrite of The Last Kingdom where it’s all gay where it should be and vnjkdfsnvkd God, what a wonderful friend!!!
29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
I actually technically am working on a sequel to @rettaroo ‘s A New Kind of Touch ! Another promise I have to hold up eventually ;;;-;;;

Sure!
31. Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?
I try to follow canon as much as I possibly can!
32. How do you feel about smut?

Eh, it’s alright. I don’t normally look for it, so I don’t really have a solid opinion on it
34. What are your thoughts on non-con and dub-con?
I don’t want to read it, but I have so far encountered it twice very amicably: once here in a ficlet, and another in a longer fic on AO3, and they were both very good
35. Would you ever kill off a canon character?
Probably not, I don’t like sad things!
36. Which is your favorite site to post fic?
AO3! I’m RedLlamas on it!
37. Talk about your current wips.
Lmao which one. The one I’m currently working on is an impregnation kink turned “oh no I actually do wanna have a family” feelings fic!
38. Talk about a review that made your day.
Gonna be real w u, the best comments I’ve gotten have mainly been from my friends, who either write a paragraph or two going into detail of the fic, or just send a one sentence comment that’s just “screams!” I’ve gotten very few paragraphs from other people, n they’re always so!!!
My friends are the realest :’)
39. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?
The perks of being a rarepair writer is that the only people who read my fics are the ones actively looking for content!!! And they can’t complain about my work because No One Else Is Writing For It!!!!!!
40. Write an alternative ending to [insert fic title] (or just the summary of one).
All my fics are masterpieces, so I’ll do a summary change! For don’t you just know (exactly what they’re thinking?)

I found the Shyan discord and some of my favorite authors are on there oh my god I'm starstruck. I'm kind of scared to talk, it seems more intimidating than lurking on Tumblr and commenting on their work in ao3 cause, they are just THAT GOOD
People out here in the fan community doing the most are really just people, friend. We all have fiction we enjoy and we all have favourite authors, and if by shyan discord, you mean the book club server, let me tell ya, nonnyb; we’re all just trying to work out a way to bridge the gap between fan-authors and readers. Feeling that distance is a big reason why people don’t like commenting anymore; come on in and tell us how you feel about something you recently read. Who knows? You might change someone’s perspective entirely.

Hello once again dear friends!
It is June, and with it, comes the annual Skeptic Believer Book Club LONG READ.
For the entire month of June, the book club gets together and reads a chunky boi, a fic of over 45k words. We had some absolutely stellar nominations this time, and some close votes, but we did arrive at a winner and it was was 6HoST Air by ÉcrivainFantôme.
This casefic is set in the early 90s, and features a Ryan with an underground radio show, a Shane who shows up to skeptic Ryan’s believer, and the team up of the decade, all centered around a mystery that has kept the book club guessing! This week, we finished it up together. We decided, that in addition to our usual book club thoughts, we’d solicit creative submissions as well, some of those are below.

Summary: The year is 1993 and Ryan Bergara runs a semi-popular underground radio show for “6H0ST Air” under the pseudonym ‘The Revenant’. Each week, he regales his listeners with unsolved crime stories and supernatural disturbances, asking them for their own theories and stories that they can post on his forum.Soon, another poster starts populating his forum - a person by the name of $K3PT1C who enjoys poking holes in everyone’s theories.The show will be forever changed when the two decide to team up to discuss and research, using a more… hands-on approach.
Book Club Thoughts
my favourite part of ryan's characterisation in this fic is his very real life canon way of like. he so clearly feels the things he feels but his own anxiety categorises his feelings in the most convoluted fucking way
the emotional payoff in this fic is just so good
I also like the descriptions in this fic in general, like when they go to investigate the warehouse or the roadtrips it's very cinematic and you can easily imagine how it looks like
the atmosphere of a ghost hunt was captured so well, they felt tense and creepy, and I want to see Ryan continuing to grow as a ghost hunter in whatever comes next.

Hello darlings!
We are back again with a read of the week. This past week, we had our raffle winner pick the theme for our nominations and they picked 'Supernatural Ryan' and we got a stellar list of nominations to pick from.
This week's selection was a tough vote, but we came together in the end to pick something with a lot of heart, pair of sharp teeth and the kind of intimacy that makes the whole book club keel over in a heap.
Fresh Blood by sessrumnir
Rating: E
Summary: Ryan is a vampire in a world where vampires are not that extraordinary anymore, really. Still, he thinks he might be getting the short end of the stick when he realizes everyone is having amazing vampire sex, including plain ol' human Shane. So Ryan is intrigued. (Sue him, ok?)
Book Club Thoughts:
this fic ultimately was a good mix of cute and spicy
my fave part of this fic is the persistent metaphor and through line of like. heart beat? blood flow? it's not said In Those Words necessarily every single time, but the wordless communication it takes within this supernatural world in order to be compatible.
i do love when they do get together though, shane's explanation of how personal the combination of blood drawing and sex is for him. deeply romantic, i thought. and just the overall encouragement shane gives ryan so ryan can just relax and give into it
I also like the fact that Ryan feels a bit disconnected from his vampirism - like he finds ways to get by and doesn't want to see himself as some other - also a good commentary on living in a multicultural society. Kinda how he mentions he feels disconnected from his culture bc he doesn't speak spanish
I really enjoyed Ryan's internal conflict about his desires, wanting them, but also feeling shame. I liked the way you drew out the path through his thought processes.
I think like, vampirism and kink are always so closely entwined in so many fics and takes on it and I like that it's very clear that it works for Ryan and Shane because they did the bit where they talked about what they were expecting out of the scene
sometimes vampire sex is about the hunger to be yourself and the other other person fully embracing it and not turning away
Also the vampire sex was really hot
Something so affirming about Shane loving and missing Ryan’s fangs
The juxtapositions between the first and last scenes. Ryan’s growth and acceptance of himself is so palpable
the thing about supernatural Ryan is, in addition to everything said in this discussion, it just feels to me like an extension of his unwavering belief in something more in the world.

Ever wonder about the fics that don’t make it through the final round of voting for the bi-weekly read in the book club? You’re in luck!
The book club is structured so that we solicit nominations from our members, either based on a theme or a trope or simply a request for their favorites, and develop a list of ten nominations, which are then narrowed down to a top three. The top three fics end up in our weekend vote and the winner of that vote becomes our book club fic for that week.
This will be the only runners-up post this month, 'cause it's SPOOKY SEASON and that means we'll be reading a fic a week for the duration, so these are the runners-up to the vote to select our three seasonal selections.
Coax the Cold Right Out of Me - sequence_fairy
“Shane,” Ryan says, insistent, eyes gleaming in the dark.
Shane lets his eyes fall shut, and sighs. The little red and white cooler they usually bring on shoots got left behind at the hotel, an hour and a half away in Jackson. “I’ll be fine,” he says, not looking at Ryan, and ignoring the ache in his gums. He’s gone longer without, he can make it through one shoot and then the drive back before being sated.
“You don’t have to be.”
OR: It's reckless, what Ryan's offering in the shadows of an abandoned church in rural Mississippi, but Shane can't find it in himself to refuse.

Breath hitched, and body trembling, Ryan stared at the musty ceiling of the attic with an intent focus on the paint peeled paneling. The air was thick and cold, and there was a pressure on the other end of the room, near the window, like someone was sitting next to it.
Ryan could imagine him with ease: when the house was in its’ prime, a young man sat against the windowsill, his leg propped up with an arm around his knee, staring contently outside at the pasture. The room was well lit by the buttery sunlight of the morning and the room was littered with small decorations, and full wool blankets, and rickety furniture. He was probably happy; at least, that’s what Ryan hoped.
He blinked slowly, and the visage was gone, leaving in its place the heavy weight of death, despair, and dusty boxes cluttering where any semblance of a bedroom had now gone. The golden rays are grey and black, and the living had transcended.

Little Bit Magical - blacktofade
Shane is a demon in need of healing and Ryan just so happens to have magic that can heal him. When Ryan needs protection from someone trying to steal his soul, they strike a deal to save each other.

Welcome back!
This week, we gathered round the table and read a fandom fave: Your Touch Stays On My Skin by drunkkenobi! So many of us have enjoyed this one over the years and getting to go back and give it a reread was so fun! Since this was written before Watcher was born, it has a nostalgic feeling that allowed us to reminisce those early days. Keep a bandaid handy to sooth that good ol' hurt/comfort.

Summary:
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Ryan asked as a nervous giggle escaped his throat.
“Because I want you to listen to me. You’re not stupid or an idiot or any of the other shitty things you tell yourself.”
“Then what am I?” Ryan asked, his voice more unsteady than he wanted to admit.
Shane grabbed both of Ryan’s shoulders, wincing through the obvious pain it put him in. “You’re my friend.”
Bookclub Thoughts:
I always love when fic is grounded in stuff that has happened in their videos and this has so much of that - Ryan’s Old City Jail freak out, Shane’s tumble while running, and references to the nipple bit
Sure the fic is about Ryan kissing Shane's booboos but also it's about murdering Ryan's self-loathing with tender care from Shane who isn't always portrayed as the most emotionally intelligent of men
I do have to say tho that I think my favourite part of this fic is how stupid the dirty talk is because it is absolutely how they would be in bed
late 2019 was so full of good fodder and this fic really took the ingredients and made a perfect cake
I adore how the author juxtaposes the physicality of Shane's injuries with the mental toll of Ryan taking on Charleston to make it a bidirectional hurt/comfort
but most importantly, the soft touch of having Ryan taking care of Shane juxtaposed with his memory of Shane's warm hands, his comfort; the very keen sense Shane has that Ryan needs him when he does

A fic about telepathy, a little Christmas magic and some romance, to boot. Our members made a whole bunch of delightful things to share with the class!

Happy First Read of Spooky Month Darlings!
This month, the book club got our vote on and picked three spooky fics to read together for three weeks in a row. Our first selection is an eerie timeloop that left us scratching out heads and wondering what fate might have befallen out intrepid heroes in an empty train station on a cold night in Chicago.
the train is expected in five minutes by miraclesofpaul is spooky, ambiguous, stylistically gorgeous, and left us with many questions and not very many answers.
Rating: Teen
Summary:
Ryan finds himself in an abandoned train station with no memory of how he got there.
Book Club Thoughts:
i just love the mid sentence start. the ellipses, being thrown right into the confusion with no rope to hang onto
[the author] really set the scene so well that you travel with ryan through his entire confusion
Love the choice to have us know things that Ryan doesn't
dramatic irony is tricky to use, but in this fic it really pays off emotionally
the thing that really gets me about shane in this is that, instead of doubting for a moment, instead of coming up with a plan, he just throws himself into whatever nightmare ryan is in with the hope that he can get him out
it felt like reading something new even though i'd read it before and i love that feeling
Let me kick this off by saying that there is an untapped market of fic where Ryan vanishes for some reason and Shane drops every inhibition to dive in and go after him
The mood of this is fantastic, being dropped right in the middle of the scene immediately gives you this sense of eerieness, and because the timeloop is just five minutes long, it makes you feel trapped and claustrophobic.
also more people should write experimental shit. this was SO GOOD and the pacing was phenomenal and i love a fic that makes you work to put pieces together slowly instead of just heavy exposition doing the work for you.

Hiya shippers & readers!
Just as we're feeling a fresh breath of life into our shipper souls thanks to the return of our boys going on fun dates, our book club raffle winner pitched a very familiar theme we hadn't had a chance to revisit in years. Casefic! We wanted them detecting; we wanted them navigating a mystery and with ten nominations pouring in, we found one that many of us had been saving for a special treat A Thread of Lavender by breathtaken.
This brilliantly crafted noir fic, set in the 1950's during the worst of the Lavender Scare, positions Ryan the PI, still so very much Ryan in all his endearing qualities and flaws, in a juxtaposition of trying to get his job done and wavering under the influence of his best friend and partner Shane. We as a book club agreed that-- with its very well-researched setting, plot execution and the author's unflinching look at what it was to be queer in this era and how that speaks to our experiences now--this particular casefic deserves a ribbon in the hall of fame of its genre.

Summary:
In the two years they’ve been in this business, Ryan’s heard countless husbands and wives tell the tale of their spouse’s infidelity, and this one’s textbook: the late nights at the office, the flimsy excuses. A receipt in his wallet from a downtown jewelry store, for a hundred dollar purchase he never told her about.
“I just need proof.” Miss Esposito is wringing her gloves in her lap, but her voice is clear and resolute, her dark eyes dry. “Then I can hang him out to dry.” For the first time since she walked in their door, she looks anxious. “Please—Ryan. Get me those pictures.”
Book Club Thoughts
I definitely felt like this one hit different in a number of ways and it could stand on its own as an original but I want to compliment [the author] deeply on their use of Ryan's quirks to imbue the plot with what we needed in a protagonist
one thing i love about [the author's] fic in general and this on especially is that they have no fear (at least that's apparent) in being realistic about writing how hard it was for queer people in this time period and piece and not shying away from bringing in alcoholism and other classic tropes of the genre
I'm both incredibly unfamiliar with the genre and the time period, but there's something so evocative and vivid about the prose, that it was very easy to feel the setting, very cinematic
yes i love an AU that is Seamless, where there are little easter eggs of irl for us to find but it's really different in key ways
It paints a picture in the mind both the glitz and glamour, and the desperation bubbling under its the surface, that characterized old Hollywood and the city that surrounded it. Efficiently creating atmosphere all without giving off the slightest hint of purple prose
i definitely think sometimes with the historical fic, especially the tinsworth of it all, can get a leeeeetle (or a lot) ooc so it's always a treat to have one that doesn't
overall i just got so absorbed in this world and every scene i pictured was in black and white. loved ryan's focus on Queers and that kind of like… fascination and confusion about it all. shane's stalwart beliefs and ryan's acceptance of it even when he didn't Get It. ryan's big brave hero moment and the vulnerability. augh. just a REALLY GOOD READ

This is Shane’s apartment, Shane’s background he sees on Zoom every fucking day, and Ryan has a moment of thinking you take Grindr selfies in your work area? before he shakes his head, swipes up to exit the app, and throws his phone to the other side of his bed.
He lasts exactly thirty seconds before he’s picking it up again, unlocking it with shaking hands, and scrolling the profile to find out more.

Ever wonder about the fics that don’t make it through the final round of voting for the bi-weekly read in the book club? You’re in luck!
The book club is structured so that we solicit nominations from our members, either based on a theme or a trope or simply a request for their favorites, and develop a list of ten nominations, which are then narrowed down to a top three. The top three fics end up in our weekend vote and the winner of that vote becomes our book club fic for that week.
We asked for our members to rec prior nominations and here are this round's runners-up:

Ryan regarded Shane with an implacable eye. Shane, for his part, withstood this with his usual easy amiability.
Ryan found himself unable to suppress a smile from his face. “What riddles you present me with! It seems impossible for me to ever forget that I am a man.”

“Y’know what would be really dumb?” Ryan says, exhaling the smoke through his nostrils like he’s a cartoon dragon as he speaks.
He tucks the pen into the pocket of his jacket, then shrugs it off his shoulders. He struggles to get one of his arms out of it as the jacket gets caught between his back and the chair, but eventually he manages to free it.
Shane can’t help but trace the lines of Ryan’s biceps with his eyes for just a second before asking, his voice low, “what, Ryan?”
He’s uncertain where this could possibly be going. When Ryan is like this, he’s unpredictable in the best way. He could either say the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard that’ll make you cry laughing for five minutes, or he could say the most earnest, heartfelt shit that makes you so thankful to be allowed to be part of Ryan’s life. Turns out, in this case, it’s neither of those.
“What if we watched one of those VHS tapes.”

This past week was a bit special! We announced the winners of our Q1 participation raffle, and one of our prizes was getting to select theme of our next read. Our winner selected Case Fic, and our members combed the tag for their nominations.

Hey there!
We've rounded out Spooky Month with an exceptional read! This week, we read Hunted, Haunted, Moderately Daunted by makemadej (santamonicayachtclub)! While this fic is only 5k, it's packed full of juicy little moments that sit atop a great, science-based premise. Set during unprecedented times, the boys head over to a haunted castle to check out some frequencies and creepy hallways (and each other).
The bookclub really enjoyed this one and it was the perfect note to end our spooky month on!

“I wish I had a knife,” Shane announced suddenly.
“To...protect us from the sound?”
“No, dumbass, so we can carve pumpkins in a spooky castle. That would be peak Halloween. Or a Sharpie, that would work too.” He palmed a pumpkin and regarded it seriously, Hamlet from the Independent Shakespeare Company all over again. “We could draw some funny little faces on these guys.”
Bookclub Thoughts:
[author] always always delivers with comedy and the bridge between friends and lovers
and there's no point hiding anymore that shane brings him comfort
if it wasn't the infra sound generators then it was ghosts but also it was Ryan asking Shane for comfort
i think everywhere i go theyre giving off their own frequencies and the spn world has no choice but to push them together. tied by invisible strings, etc etc
this one has that classic psychological horror premise of 'is it in my mind or is it real?' and the answer to that question is so good
would love for them to cover something like this at some point. the science was so interesting.
science: inconclusive at best on ghosts, very conclusive on gay
the actual infrasound was the hum of all sides of their fanbase scrutinizing two ghost hunters on opposing sides of the belief spectrum making a relationship work

Hello friends!
It is June, and with it, comes the annual Skeptic Believer Book Club LONG READ.
For the entire month of June, the book club gets together and reads a chunky boi, a fic of over 45k words. We had some absolutely stellar nominations this time, and some close votes, but we did arrive at a winner and it was was 6HoST Air by ÉcrivainFantôme.
This casefic is set in the early 90s, and features a Ryan with an underground radio show, a Shane who shows up to skeptic Ryan’s believer, and the team up of the decade, all centered around a mystery that has kept the book club guessing!

Summary: The year is 1993 and Ryan Bergara runs a semi-popular underground radio show for "6H0ST Air" under the pseudonym 'The Revenant'. Each week, he regales his listeners with unsolved crime stories and supernatural disturbances, asking them for their own theories and stories that they can post on his forum.Soon, another poster starts populating his forum - a person by the name of $K3PT1C who enjoys poking holes in everyone's theories.The show will be forever changed when the two decide to team up to discuss and research, using a more... hands-on approach.
Book Club Thoughts
the execution of the cafe scene felt cinematic. I could hear the soundtrack stop
i love love love love in AUs when all the same references are there, like the bfu episodes and everything. it makes me kick my feet in glee going "i understand this reference!!"
shane keeping things secret for no reason is in character
i wanna touch on how sweet the ryan and sara friendship is. i love a good platonic m/f friendship
i never did college radio, but this fic makes me feel like i did. it is ridiculously evocative
i gotta say i LOVE so much of shane's dialogue in this. it is SO GOOD, you have studied the fuck out of the way he talks and it shows
I ADORE how 90's this fic is
love how obvious it is that Shane is crushing HARD on Ryan but Ryan is oblivious. Girl, please! He's into you! Sara sees it, why can't you!
